Good Morning!

A good morning text. Three mugs, one with coffee and two with Bournvita, huddled together in the middle of the dining table. Alone time with my music as I make the bed. Looking over my laptop screen to spot my sister making a funny face at me. A political comedy video (or two) in between chunks of studying. Mid-morning snacks. Wandering into the kitchen and asking my dad what’s for lunch.

Waiting for my sisters to take their lunch first because they only like the thinner top part of the rasam. Arguments over whose turn it is to choose what to watch over lunch. Tranquil afternoon silence. Occasional afternoon naps. The darkening of the sky. The coolness of the bench in the veranda. The sounds of raindrops on concrete.

Slow progress made through a drawing. Words coming together into poems. The gentle brush on my thumb against guitar strings. My sisters practicing their respective instruments before their teacher calls. Loud laughter that ripples through the living room. The excitement in the voice asking to watch the video sent. Links to old vines. A consistently shifting playlist with collective favourites.

Using Snapchat only for one particular friend. Conversations started with the weirdest of questions. A free exchange of memes. Excited messages from my favourite junior about her new college experience and writing. Dumping love into someone’s messages whenever they crosses my mind. Telling my best friend how lovely her art is. Scattered conversations that would’ve otherwise been had in person. Putting up happy posts on my story. The warmth that flares up in my chest when someone tells me a story made them smile.

Reminders to work out. Random dance challenges. The dances that all three of us know. The feeling of victory when a dance is learnt. The unbelievable synchronization when my sisters dance next to each other. The fact that the older of my sisters can now touch her toes after days of stretching exercises. The way my parents laugh every time we dance to this one song. The pause that my mom takes as realization hits her that she’s been humming a K-pop song. Evenings in the backyard. Evenings on walks. The gentle rhythm of the swing. Talks of friends and reminiscing of our past selves. Gushing about K-dramas and lessons learnt from them. Occasionally having to educate the younger of my sisters on more serious topics, to which she listens intently. The lack of seriousness whenever all three of us are on the swing with us. Running into the house after sunset. Experimenting with dinner. Getting to learn how to make recipes I’ve always loved but never tried. An increased consumption of noodles in the household. The way the day slows down after dinner. Family movie nights. Watching bad movies just to make fun of them. Game nights on video call. Netflix party. The absolute disconnect between the content on the screen and the messages in the chat.

6 Dopamine • Jan’21

Daydreams, daydreams and more daydreams. Random hearts and stickers and ‘I love you’s through the day. Keeping note of stupid details of my day because they’re more fun to talk about. Wholesome arguments with no conclusions. Frequently used emojis. A sleepy voice filtering through my earphones. Comfortable silences. Genuine smiles and amused giggles. A warmth I’ll probably never get used to. Good vibes. Soft smiles. The knowledge that things will be alright.

2017 Lady bird. Admittedly, one of the reasons I was intrigued by this movie is because of its name. Not only did it pique my interest, it also rolled off my tongue in a way that I enjoyed. So of course, I had to watch and find out what the deal exactly was and why the name is what it is. Did I? Yes and no.

8 Dopamine • Jan’21

The movie opens into the life of a teenage girl, one of the most discussed demographics of people out there. Like most movies that deal with this subject, it lets the viewer be a fly on the wall of the protagonist’s life, only this one does it without the fly wearing tinted glasses. It tries to stay as authentic and honest as it can. I had not seen the trailer before I dived into this piece. One of the reasons that made me keep on watching was that the protagonist established a delightful connection with me within the first five minutes of the movie itself. The way she expressed her strong personality was absolutely not something I had been expecting, especially that early on, which is why the introductory scene sealed the deal effectively. And the rest of the movie doesn’t disappoint. Jan’21 • Dopamine

One of the most striking things about this movie is the fact that not only are all of the characters well-written, but every actor has an incredible understanding of, and command over, their character. The deliveries are crisp, and articulate. Another thing that will really get to you, in this movie, is the constant repetition of the issues in

10 Dopamine • Jan’21

the household and in Lady Bird’s life. I believe it is difficult to incessantly repeat something in any narrative without letting it get boring and unoriginal. It did not, and that was pleasing. The name (that the protagonist chooses for herself) feels like the manifestation of every such girl’s desire. And by that I don’t mean only delicate sentiments and boys. I mean every teen who is trying to figure out their self, equations with family, career paths and dreams all the while aspiring to catch flight.

T N H A "I W T E B O YOU T T S E B F VERY L E UR S E

It keeps up with the conflict established in the beginning, mixing into it detail, amusement, epiphanies and nuance (even though the main characters are hardly subtle in their expression of self, and modus operandi). It keeps you well-amused as you follow this girl’s journey, never knowing, but at the same time having a gut-feeling about what to expect next.

YO F O N O I VERS

THAT YOU CAN BE"

Maybe to fly away to the far unknown or maybe to fly back home. This movie also dares to give the kind of take on religion that many seem to shy away from. In today’s world of practicality, it highlights the niche of spirituality and emotionality that religion occupies, albeit doing so slightly forcefully (for the characters) in the story.

Love fleamarkets? The Flea Co. was conceived by two people who love the Delhi Sarojini Nagar market and Indian flea markets; realising how culturally important they were, and how deeply impacted the sellers of flea market communities were - due to the pandemic and rapid consumer shift to online platforms.

It is where sellers can earn more sustainable and secure livelihoods, to tide over the current uncertainties and changing realities.

Our mission is to help street sellers affected by dwindling numbers and a changing market environment rebuild their financial security. In a marketplace that is rapidly shifting online, street market sellers are plagued by unpredictable and often dire circumstances. This is exacerbated due to the new COVID realities. Out of this love for helping preserve flea markets was born The Flea Co. - an ambitious dream to capture the street market culture and bring it online, to relive the joy of flea markets.

An ode to nature

by Jaya Kotta

When I gaze at you in an empty daze, Your soft breeze touches my face, Causing my melancholies to raze, Giving my spirits a boosting raise. You drive away my feeling of dearth, Giving me the warmth of a hearth. The charm of your resplendent sight, Fills my imagination with roaring might.

With bright sun filtering through the trees, Wrapping me in the warm, brisk breeze,

You ruthlessly invade my fortress of solitude, Manoeuvring my mood to a soaring altitude.

You douse the flames of my boredom, Opening the doors to a novel kingdom.

Yet, man reduces you to such stigma, Leaving in my mind, an immutable enigma.

the perks of being

Optimistic

The days are going by and going by, and I have been attending online classes. So, that leaves me feeling really exhausted but it's okay. I am always sleepy and when I'm not, I think and fantasize. Now, no matter how the tyranny of life makes it hard for me to dream but dreams are the place where you are supposed to hide from reality right? So, just like any other lonely soul, I fantasize. I fantasize about a lot of things and one of them is the universe and sometimes, I cannot fathom why, with so much beauty around us, we still stay displeased with one another. The sound of birds chirping and the slow and warm rain, the exceptional rain and the dance of the branches and flowers of my plants to the rhythm of the universe makes me aware of the beauty that exists among us. The universe has bewitched me body and soul and I know that's from pride and prejudice but I couldn't find other words to describe my feelings for it. The days with the sun shining and the nights with the moon. The moon that lights in the dark sky and the stars get someone to

blink for. Have you heard that when someone you love dies, they become a star? It's a common saying. I don't know if it's true but I like to believe in it, for we are born only to die someday, and even if, I am just surviving right now, I might be able to feel alive someday and when I'd die, being a star wouldn't be so boring, I guess. So, I am gonna keep trying to work things out between me and life by making a cup of tea every evening and having the first sip from my blue cup with both of my hands while listening to a song and by singing at the top of my lungs in the shower and by getting a head massage every week from my mother because her warm hands make the world less unbearable. You know, rumor has it that we, humans are made to be there for each other because life is an arduous journey and the ride gets a little rough. So, having a hand to hold onto sometimes, wouldn't be so bad. So yes, I may be questioning my existence and I haven't figured out what I am or what I should be but I know that I want to be able to dream and have aspirations and I want to be able to love and be loved but Most importantly, I want to be able to laugh and cry without finding it unattainable.

I love the art of decorating especially the fine intricate details. Decorating a cake/pastry is like bringing my imagination to reality. The finished product is always the icing on the cake for me. Baking always helps me relax and unwind. It simply “feels like me.” In a field where I don’t have much creative freedom, baking truly keeps me fulfilled and energized. Baking also helps manage my anxiety. A chronic worrier since my teen years, I find the

structure and focus that baking requires to be soothing. I’m in control of the outcome and that control is important during times that my anxiety feels debilitating. It’s not just about baking goodies, it’s about the joy and calm that come with it. It reminds me to slow down and plan out recipes. How profound that a hobby can be a form of therapy.

This pandemic has been horrific with the toll it has taken on health care workers around the world and the families that have lost their loved ones. I can’t even imagine as I sit in my bubble what the frontline workers go through on a daily basis. Or the families that have had to let go of their loved ones earlier than normal. And even as we sit tight and wait for better days to come, we could also sit and analyse our own lives in this period of a forced cooling down. The early days of lockdown were tough to deal with, but I soon realised that the curse was a blessing in disguise. I finally got a chance to push myself and launch my business. From coming out with a menu, to testing it out, to baking, to packaging- I enjoy the whole process so much and every little victory Jan’21 • Dopamine 21

or hiccup that comes along the way The business was a little slow at first but I soon realized that people have more faith in home baked products than in commercial bakeries with dozens of workers. I absolutely love the fact that the desserts I provide for clients are all made from scratch, are customized, and provide that extra special touch to special events such as birthday parties, weddings, and other wonderful life occasions. It gives me a feeling of satisfaction to know that my desserts were a part of someone's once in a lifetime event and helped make the event a memorable experience.

Cinnamon Rolls- I bake them, I eat them, I love them, I can’t let them go. Friends. You just take a minute right now and you drink in those virtual smells. Are you ready? a base of rich browned butter, with notes of caramelized brown sugar, yeasty bread, and fragrant, warm cinnamon. These rolls are just one of those things that are very regular but somehow elevates the day a little bit. They are low maintenance, highly snackable, and 100% as warming, fragrant, and cozy a basic bon should be.

The Intern is a story of a guardian angel coming into one's life and fixing things for the better along the way. Robert De Niro stars as Ben Whittaker, a retired widower hating retired life. One day he comes across an advertisement for the post of an elderly intern for an up and coming fashion apparel company About The Fit run by Jules Ostin who was played by Anne Hathaway. Upon joining, Ben feels out of place initially with his considerably younger colleagues and has nothing to do when assigned to Jules who isn't a fan of the program. However, he slowly wins over everyone by helping them out with their personal and professional problems. The story is a simple one on the surface as you would've seen a lot of these ideas play out before. However, what makes this movie special is the bond the characters form with each other. The heartwarming moments really stick with you. And in all this, Ben finds his heart again too. The movie is held together by De Niro and Hathaway who essay a father-daughter like relationship. The movie has it's fair share of sad moments as well but it navigates through them brilliantly and fills you up with joy and well that's what movies are for, right?

Robinson Crusoe meets Mars. This is the basic plot of The Martian starring Matt Damon. Based on the book of the same name (a highly recommended read) by Andy Weir, The Martian explores human intellect and survival instincts at its finest. In the movie, we see Mark Whatney performing surgery on himself, using bio waste to grow potatoes on Mars, manufacturing water from rocket fuel, contacting Earth to let them know he's alive, traveling 2000 miles in the unknown just to have a shot at survival and we even see him become Iron Man! The movie tackles a lot of challenges and with each challenge you know his task becomes a bit more difficult yet you never see him give up. The human spirit is there for all to see. Solving problems step by step and keeping a cheerful mind in all the adversity. Whatney, portrayed brilliantly by Matt Damon makes you root for him. He'll keep you entertained to the very end and this survival story will warm your heart in the end. The sci-fi elements in the movie are plausible and add to the experience. This movie is for all those who love an underdog story, with the never give up attitude and how humans if united, can do amazing things like even bringing a man stranded in Mars, back home.

Koi Mil Gaya! Every 3rd Indian kid from the 2000s has a nostalgia associated with the movie and the character of Rohit Mehra. Anyways for the small section of people who have missed it, the movie is about a mentally challenged guy named Rohit who struggles with his academics and gets bullied in his school by a few notorious students. Life changes for him when a UFO lands in his city and accidentally leaves behind an alien who he names Jadoo. He hides it in his house, develops a strong sense of friendship and attachment with it. Jadoo gives him his eyesight back, his mental prowess increases, he becomes smart and bulked up and starts enjoying his life more than ever. His friends also start liking Jadoo and they try their best to keep it hidden and safe until the police find out. The movie won't offer you great VFX or logic but its heart is in the right place. It's a children's movie and that's how it should be looked at/judged. The movie makes you laugh and cry throughout the course of its runtime. Movies like these always stay close to your heart as a kid and no one can take that away no matter how old you become. The nostalgia always hits in the right moments. Hrithik Roshan is great as Rohit which by the way was an incredibly tough role to play and is well complemented by Rekha and Preity Zinta. 26 Dopamine • Jan’21

English Vinglish is the story of Shashi Godbole whose life has become limited to being a caring wife and mother of two children. She gives her heart and soul to her family and has made them her priority, but because of her lack of English speaking skills, she becomes the constant butt of jokes and rebuttal with her husband and daughter. She starts to discover herself when she goes alone for a wedding to NY where she joins an english class, goes around the streets alone to take care of her needs and starts talking and interacting with a few people. She begins to believe in herself, gains confidence and esteem and after getting a proposal by a guy from her class makes her realise how trapped she had been in her family life that she had completely lost herself in a way. The movie is a tribute to women empowerment, in the true sense of the term. The movie teaches you that it's important to have your own life and personality. You don't always need to succumb to what the society or your family expects from you. There's so much value there to be found in us that we don't truly realise about ourself. Sridevi, who was making a comeback after all these years, never looked like she was away from the big screen. She steals each and every frame where she is in. Amit Thrivedi’s music and Gauri Shinde’s direction are flawless. The movie is a celebration of life and you will experience it only once you watch it. Jan’21 • Dopamine 27

MARKETED

We have in conversation with us, Aman Nagpal, a budding entrepreneur at just 19 years old! Let’s hear about his venture in digital marketing. When did you start and how? Since I was in class 10, I’ve been quite interested in sales & marketing. I used to go with my father to meet new people and clients and found it so exciting! Accompanying him to his store in summer vacations made me keener on the art of selling products and handling the sales counter. That’s how the seed of the idea of “Get Marketed ” was sown, and now our team is bringing this dream to life! Finally, in the middle of the pandemic, I started planning and building my team from scratch. I used to visit new shops and offices in search of work and used to deliver work on my own with my friends. This brought up my confidence in doing cold calls and finally starting this business. Then there was no looking back! Initially, it was not easy to get clients and it took a lot of rejections which it turn taught me a lot. Our team if now husting with daily meetings and we’re just loving working with new clients and building our clientbase/ network. What is your goal? We aim to promote “Digitalisation” and serve the country by helping every sector economically. The idea is to help new as well as old businesses to grow, develop and reach the customer who needs them, which means being at the right place, at the right time, and at the right price. 28

Dopamine • Jan’21

We will help the businesses to upscale their business by taking it online, providing them with different promotional strategies. Our prime focus is to enhance your sales. From product-related hassles to other tasks like an online presence and online promotions, we ease out the job for businesses. We help the business to get higher visibility and reach on popular e-commerce platforms which will surely help in boosting the business.

How did this idea come to you? During Lockdown, when I was sitting idle and was just thinking about the development of presentday marketing which is digital marketing, the bigger companies were promoting themselves and reaching out to a large number of customers through different types of strategies. But, the Small, Medium and Micro Businesses were facing so many problems and struggling every day. Along with this, due to unemployment so many potential young skilled people are unable to earn. Using these two pieces, we are putting together the puzzle of educating small businesses about the importance of digital marketing in this era and helping them with it.

What’s the future plan? We’re working towards helping businesses take their message to the right customers and clients around the world by the act of promoting and selling products and services by leveraging online marketing tactics such as social media marketing, search marketing, and email marketing. We are working on different projects in the various sectors for future expansion and will deliver the best. Hopefully, you’ll see our brand catching everyone’s eye soon!

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.” -Swami Vivekanand

The mysteries of life have always intrigued me. To venture inwards to find myself, understand myself, is a journey I always wanted to embark on. Sitting with myself, my thoughts and emotions for 20 minutes out of 1440 in a day didn’t seem as daunting at first. But the second I closed my eyes, I knew I was in trouble.

The first few days looked something like this – eyes closed, sitting cross-legged, hands on my thighs facing upwards, deep breath in…..and out, inner peace, inner peace, inner pea- oh! a thought, and another, and another, and another, feels like an eternity, *peeks at the time*, it’s been…..three minutes. As you can see, by the end of it I was either watching full feature films in my head, becoming extremely restless or turning it into my afternoon nap.

Another few days of trying to control my mind, to stop my thoughts seemed to only increase the problem. I was constantly vexed with not being able to keep my mind still and focused until I read this analogy on Reddit: “A lot of people think they fail at mindfulness meditation, just watching the breath because they get distracted by thoughts. In fact, being distracted and then noticing the distraction and returning to your breath is the entire point.” I realized then that I don’t have to control the mind, I have to liberate it. Let it run free and wild, jump up and down, let the thoughts come and go, watch them come and go without being carried away, while being fully aware of it. Realizing, I’m not the thinker, I am the watcher.

Gupta h s a Y by By the end of two weeks, I had become a lot more comfortable with being in my own company. Meditation slowly became more refreshing and enjoyable than just a task I had to accomplish. The experiences I had during this time can never be put into mere words. When I opened my eyes after those 20 minutes, I could sense a difference between the way the world felt when I had started. It seemed clearer but also farther away, less directly affecting me. Jan’21 • Dopamine 31

by Yash Gupta

“Be in the present”, “live in the moment” etc is something I’d always heard people say, but I only truly experienced the “power of now” when I began meditating. I realized that this moment right now is inevitable, there is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow, there is only NOW. Thinking about the past or future is not the problem but to live in it as an escape from the present unknowingly becomes an escape from life itself. Life is meant to be lived being aware and alive to experience each and every moment. Going into this did I expect to instantly be a calmer, happier version of myself? Absolutely. Spoiler: I was, but eventually.

32 Dopamine • Jan’21

It’s a slow transformation, it’s a learning process. Every day is a new day but consistency is key. Slowly but surely, meditation changed my life for the better. With 30 days coming to an end, I had a lot more clarity about the world inside me as the world outside me. I began bringing mindfulness into my daily activities too whether it was cooking, painting or cleaning the house. I have decided to make it more than just a 30-day challenge, I have decided to make it part of my lifestyle. Meditation helped me explore parts of myself I wasn’t aware existed. Silence isn’t empty, its full of answers; listen to it, it has so much to say.

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed. Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid of its plenty.
