YEAR IN REVIEW

The end of 2020 is fast approaching and I am sure we can all agree this year has been one of the most challenging years in a generation - forcing our members, communities, and businesses large and small to rethink, adapt and change our daily practices. The challenges facing Australia, the world and indeed our club, as a result of COVID-19, will most likely continue into next year as well. The pandemic forced the closure of the club for a total of twelve weeks in two periods, which resulted in the stand down of all but essential staff. Since reopening in a controlled but reduced operation, strict protocols are in place when visiting your club sites to meet Government guidelines and ensure the health and wellbeing of our members, guests and staff. From my observation it is safer visiting your club than most other public venues. We have regular cleaning of all surfaces and members can be assured that this practice is adhered to and that your Board is adamant these guidelines will remain in place until otherwise advised by the Government.

Hello Members

Welcome to the Summer edition of YOURS.

Most of our intra-clubs are not operating (except lawn bowls) much to the dismay of their members. Reopening most of these clubs is not possible as members are required to be seated to avoid intermingling which is a Government requirement.

Management are constantly reviewing practices and are slowly bringing back some normality including live music, functions and events. It is a difficult time for us all especially management and staff who are working within strict guidelines of capped numbers in our clubs. DOOLEYS Lidcombe has a capacity limitation of 600 due to the 1 person per 4m2 rule and members have a choice of either visiting upstairs or downstairs, not both in the one visit. This is a NSW Health directive and I urge members to be patient and understanding, and follow directions from staff during your visit.

Our support for our local community continued during the last financial year where we continued to develop and manage long-term strategic community partnerships that provide maximum benefit to address identified community needs. One important program that did proceed during the year was Max Potential where students from various high schools participated in the leadership program. Most of the training was conducted remotely by Zoom and I attended the celebration presentation also by Zoom, certainly a different experience.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Members, our Annual Christmas Fair in support of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead which is normally held in December has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, however we at DOOLEYS have not forgotten our obligations to the Cancer Centre for Children and will continue to support this important work in other ways.

Our major December events including the Toy Raffle, Ham & Turkey Raffle and Seafood Raffle, are going ahead with the dates and details available in the following pages of this magazine.

As we move into the festive season DOOLEYS Lidcombe, DOOLEYS Waterview and DOOLEYS Regents Park Sports Club are great locations to celebrate with family and friends. Our friendly staff offer world class service for members and guests in wonderful surroundings and will look after your every need during your visit.

ELECTIONS 2020

At the Annual General Meeting held on 16 November 2020 the CEO announced that under the triennial rule there were three board positions to be contested in 2020 with three candidates nominating for the positions. Current directors Chris Cassidy, Tony Khoury and John Munce nominated and therefore were elected unopposed. I thank members for your interest and please be assured that we and the rest of the board will continue working for you in the coming years.

Another year is about to close and we wonder where the time has gone. Next year surely can only get better and it will if we don’t drop our guard and continue to follow safe health practices.

On behalf of my Board colleagues, I take the opportunity to wish you all a very happy and holy Christmas. Christmas is about family and friends and we must not forget members who have lost loved ones during the year and to those on the sick list, we wish you a speedy recovery.

We are proud to report the recent success Our Annual General Meeting was held on Monday 16 November. Thank you to the 56 members who attended. Members were provided with an update and an overview of the last 12 months including the ongoing continued success of the DOOLEYS Group, despite enforced closures earlier in the year.

We are delighted to inform members that the DA for Phase 1 of the Lidcombe Club’s expansion has received conditional approval by council. The Club will work through the various conditions and develop final building plans over the next 6 months with the aim of breaking ground late 2021.

An update on development plans informed members about recent progress to extend and expand your Club. See the pages on Club Development in this magazine for the latest on the milestone progress we have made.

Our achievements have meant we continue to contribute to and invest in the development of our local community.

As a Club, we are thriving because of the teamwork of our employees, the support of our members and the diligence shown by all who have backed our Covid Safe initiatives that go above and beyond the recommendations by the NSW Government.

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY

This year, DOOLEYS continued to be a major sponsor of the Youth Development Program, Max Potential for both the Cumberland and Parramatta Programmes. Congratulations to the students who participated and delivered break through concepts that were designed to rebuild the community in a post Covid world.

We are proud to report the recent success of the Auburn Youth Centre Employment Pathways Project which saw 149 young people take part, 128 certificate courses completed, 216 employment skill sessions and 54 young people supported into employment.

We are also pleased to announce the continuation of our important sponsorship programmes with both the Australian Catholic University and the University of Notre Dame in 2021. See page 24 for more information.

While we have had to cancel The DOOLEYS annual Christmas Fair this year, we are proud to announce we have honored our support to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead with a $50,000 donation this Christmas. Since 2003, DOOLEYS have donated over 2 million dollars towards the work of the Oncology department towards investing in vital research programs.

DOOLEYS are celebrating Christmas this year with life and excitement. Come in and see the Christmas Lightshow which will see the premises at Lidcombe lit up with decorations. There are also a whole range of special events and offers for you and your loved ones to enjoy this season.

Please also be reminded that COVID restrictions are still in place. This does limit member access & movement to either ground floor or Level 1 at Lidcombe. We apologies for the inconvenience and appreciate your assistance with staff who have to follow this policy.

CLUB CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE It has been quite a long time and we are glad to be back in the spectrum again, hoping and praying that this will be a real road to recovery, albeit a ‘new normal’ they say. This has certainly been a difficult year for many individuals and families. Many have been affected by reduced work hours and loss of employment. Even recreational opportunities, such as socialising at our Club, have been restricted. Our own Parish Church closed for a few weeks. While, like the Club, our doors are now open, social distancing has limited the number of people who can attend services. This year we were unable to hold our Annual Communion Breakfast. This is an event our members look forward to each year.

As we approach the Christmas Season and the coming of our Lord, it is more important than ever to offer goodwill to our follow man. These times of ‘lock down’ and ‘self-isolation’ have allowed us to spend more time with our family. Sadly, there are many who live alone and miss out on the chance to ‘catch up with their friends’.

If you know of other Club members who are in this situation, this may be a good opportunity to give them a call and asked if they are okay.

While the Parish of St Joachim will again host nine days of Dawn Masses starting at 5.15 am from 16 December until Christmas Eve, this year, we will not be able to gather for breakfast in the parish hall after Masses. Visitors are welcome to join us.

As we move into January 2021, may our compassion for others allow us to understand their needs. Hopefully, we can break down the ‘borders’ of their loneliness.

Sunday 10 January 2020 is a significant day, because on that day we celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord. As an adult, he asked his cousin, John the Baptist, to perform this sacrament in the Jordan River. Shortly after this, Jesus withdrew to the Judean desert to fast for forty days and nights. Our Lord needed the guidance of the Holy Spirit to undertake this task. In these coming months we will also need the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

May I wish all the Members, Directors and Staff of DOOLEYS a Happy and Holy Christmas and a more generous New Year in 2021. It would certainly be different Christmas and the New Year celebration, but we will celebrate anyway.

MEET MICHAEL Michael has been with DOOLEYS since 2010 working in various roles. Michael began his DOOLEYS journey as a Team Leader, was promoted to Supervisor and has recently joined the Customer Service Manager team. People will know Michael for his friendly, helpful and welcoming manner!

"I enjoy working for DOOLEYS as no two days are the same. Every day brings something new and to learn from, I enjoy how we make sure our customers come first and insure we can provide our best service for them. Being with DOOLEYS I have had the chance to meet so many great people at our clubs from members to staff".

MEET DANIELLE Danielle left Hotels and came to DOOLEYS in 2018 as Duty Manager. She is currently based at our Lidcombe Club but has worked at all three venues during her time here. Danielle is passionate about food and loves to cook.

"I started at DOOLEYS as a club supervisor in early 2018 at Regents Park, coming from a Pub/ hotel background I found this to be a great place to start. The ‘RP Team’ as they are called made my start at DOOLEYS a memorable and enjoyable time that I will always be thankful for, constantly pushing me to succeed. In being successful of gaining the role of relief Duty Manager, I made the move to Lidcombe where I am still developing myself with an incredible team and learning new areas of the business in the role of Customer Service Manager."

MEET PAUL Paul has been with DOOLEYS since September 2020 after over 20 years working in Aviation.

"My experience within the Aviation industry, training and working with people has paved the way for me to transfer my skills into the DOOLEYS family. Building strong relationships with members, guests and staff is my focus. I am driven to create wonderful memories, great times and assist our team in being the best at what they do"

MEET ALMA Alma has worked with DOOLEYS since 2012 starting in Customer Service and working through a range of roles to her most recent appointment as Customer Service Manager at Regents Park. Alma has worked with DOOLEYS since 2012, working in various Customer Service roles and being promoted to Supervisor, having been based at RP during this time and in her current role of CSM. "Having been with DOOLEYS for more than 8 years, I have formed great relationships with our members and the team across all three clubs. Being a Customer Service Manager, I get to focus on making sure our team and members have all they need to get the most out of their time at DOOLEYS and that’s really rewarding for me."

DOOLEYS SECURES DEVELOPMENT APPROVAL!

D

OOLEYS are pleased to announce that development approval has recently been granted for the first phase of the Lidcombe Masterplan project, the Concourse.

The phase 1 development application was submitted to Cumberland Council in December 2019 and the approval signifies exciting times for the Club, paving the way for the commencement of the delivery of best in class facilities for our members.

The plans will see an additional 52 Car parking spaces created through the extension of the Board St basement car park and an extension of the Club itself over two levels along the John St frontage.

It will be a significant investment by the Club and demonstrates the commitment to re-investment that improves the member experience.

New facilities including new restaurants and bars, improved functions spaces and significantly larger areas for intra-clubs activities will dramatically improve variety of the member offer. A bigger members lounge will facilitate a new look entertainment and events programme and the new kids club will provide tailored activities for our younger visitors. Additionally, the John St CafĂŠ will be re-located and re-invigorated providing a range of new options including a Gelato & Dessert Bar whilst the main gaming floor will benefit from dedicated bathroom facilities.

Architecturally the John St façade is re-imagined with finely detailed traditional brickwork and contemporary glazing reflecting the Clubs position at the heart of the Lidcombe Town Centre and local community. The vision, masterminded by world renowned architects PTW, acknowledges the rich history of the area yet provides a visual link to the the state of the art facilities within.

2021 will see the development of the detailed design as we move towards an anticipated start to the construction in early 2022. The DOOLEYS development strategy was carefully considered over a long period of time to deliver maximum member and local community benefit, whilst minimising the risk of embarking on such ambitious plans. Our ability to press ahead despite the current economic climate is testament to the wider development strategy and validates the extensive due diligence and planning undertaken by the Club.

I

It has been a year like no other as we all watched the COVID-19 pandemic greatly impact our social and economic life on a global scale.

In what has undoubtably been an unprecedent year, we congratulate all those working within the community sector who have adapted with rapid changes in service delivery whilst still continuing to operate under intense pressure.

Locally, responding to the needs of our community during a time of rapid change and uncertainty has certainly been a challenge for many and one DOOLEYS continues to remain focused on.

On behalf of the DOOLEYS Board or Directors, Management and Staff, we would also like to thank our local healthcare heroes, emergency service personnel and all who reside on the frontline within the community sector. Thank you for the work that you do in keeping our community safe.

DOOLEYS has continued to be optimistic by holding our local communities’ interests at heart as we maintain our commitment to supporting and building the health and wellbeing of our people and community.

We are pleased to share with our members and broader community the positive outcomes we have achieved over the last year – results we only hope to continue to build on in 2021.

t DOOLEYS, we believe in supporting people through their educational journey. It is our mission to continue to provide opportunities for all students to achieve academic excellence and pursue their dreams through tertiary education.

DOOLEYS is excited to continue our important scholarship programmes with both the Australian Catholic University and The University of Notre Dame in 2021. Supporting programmes that address barriers to education, training and employment for young people in Western Sydney is a real focus at DOOLEYS and one we that we are extremely proud of.

DOOLEYS scholarships have assisted well over 100 students across Western Sydney, alleviating their financial stresses to pursue their academic studies. These students have gone on to achieve higher marks, made it to the Dean’s list for the first time, improved their confidence and provided recipients with the opportunity to give back to their local community.

DOOLEYS is honoured to continue our partnerships with the Australian Catholic University for our 25th consecutive year and The University of Notre Dame for our third consecutive year.

LIGHTING UP CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AT WESTMEAD!

A

s we know, it has been a tough year for all, putting into perspective the isolation and hurdles patients and families face throughout their lives.

And whilst our members will miss our wonderful annual Christmas Fair in support of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead this year, we are delighted to let our members know DOOLEYS continued our support of the hospital with a $50,000 donation, ensuring sick kids get the very best care during this holiday season.

Over the years, our partnership with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has grown considerably from supporting the vital work of the Oncology Department to investing in vital research programs. In the last five years alone, DOOLEYS has contributed $1M towards important research programs and clinical trials to help fund a cure to childhood cancer. A mission we are proud to support and one we know impacts so many.

From our ongoing support, DOOLEYS was recognised as a Founder of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in 2016. An honourable achievement and one we value with great appreciation and respect. Since our partnership began in 2003, DOOLEYS has donated a phenomenal $2,055,071.44 to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

We are in constant awe of the amazing hospital staff and volunteers who work so tirelessly every day to care for sick kids. In the face of great adversity, they are pillars of strength and compassion who deserve our admiration and continued support – particularly this year!

POTENTIAL 2021

Learn how to coach for FREE and support a young adult

T

here’s nothing like living through a pandemic to give you perspective, right?! Perhaps you can see the value in up-skilling with some coaching professional development. Or maybe you’d like to walk alongside a high school student to invest in their sense of self and hope for the future.

DOOLEYS has been a significant long-term partner with the highly regarded Max Potential youth leadership program. Each year, we offer FREE scholarships to our valued community partners to join the Max Potential program. We run two programs - Cumberland and Parramatta - in partnership with local schools.

Volunteers receive two days of professional coach training and then are matched with a young adult who you coach. Over the 22 weeks you also receive one-onone coaching sessions with a professional coach. Be part of an amazing, transformative experience as young adults develop their personal and community leadership through challenges and triumphs – and learn a lot about yourself along the way.

Based on our learnings delivering the program during COVID-19 in 2020, we will be delivering a hybrid model in 2021 with a mixture of in person workshops (at DOOLEYS) and some via Zoom.

Summer is here and at DOOLEYS Health + Fitness a lot of what we love is heating back up.

F

or those that I have not yet, my name is Neil and I am the new Health + Fitness manager at DOOLEYS. It’s a pleasure to lead a community that I’ve grown to adore over the years and I feel grateful for this opportunity. I look forward to the continued growth of our wonderful gym with the support from the club, the gym team and our dedicated members.

The season for celebration is here and what a time we’ve lived in this year. It’s fair to say, 2020 has thrown many challenges our way. The year though has ended with our members and team reconnected again, fitter, stronger and better than ever and we want to say thank you to all of our members who continue to make DOOLEYS Health + Fitness the fun and welcoming place it is.

Well-done to 8 Week Boot crew for completing the 8-week program led by veteran Bootcamp Coach, Karl. Rain, hail or shine the team showed commitment in turning up and working harder and harder as the weeks went on. We’ve always had strong bootcamp community and it showed with spots filling up fast. Bring on the next challenge! Kicking off in February 2021.

Congratulations to our friends upstairs at Lidcombe Podiatry who were awarded winners for the Local Business in Outstanding Health Improvement Services. Podiatrist Nicole and Gemma consistently cater to those in need from all ‘Walks of Life’ and they do it with compassion and hard work. A well deserve award to their whole team.

JOSHUA: TRAINER PROFILE GYM SUPERVISOR & COACH I am responsible for overseeing the health, safety, customer satisfaction and general wellbeing of the gym members at Dooleys Health and Fitness.

I also get to teach a few small group training classes which is the more gratifying part of my role!

WHAT SORT OF DUTIES DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR ROLE? My day at work consists of making sure our members are having a great time and have all they need to achieve their goals. This includes overseeing Health + Safety, our members need at Gym Reception and leading the team to deliver the best for our members each shift. I also coach FX classes on our timetable – A high intensity workout that is designed to improve fitness and muscular endurance.

WHAT’S THE MOST EXCITING PART OF YOUR ROLE? I would say that the most exciting part of my role is teaching FX classes. It’s such a rewarding feeling watching members come back over and over again for more and seeing them progress in their ability makes me a very proud coach.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MENTORS OR PEOPLE YOU LOOK UP TO IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE? I look up to all my managers and colleagues alike. As someone that has only been working here for a year, I have seen what the team have created since open in 2013 and the warm and supporting member culture that exists. I’ve been to many gyms in my time and can say our gym is one of a kind in the way we guide and support our members to achieve their goals.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST-USED PRODUCTIVITY HACK? I like to reward myself after finishing off all the tasks that I feel is necessary for the day. Dessert before dinner is a fun one!

WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF A PERFECT DAY? A big gym session by day, a dinner with the people I love by night.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE EXERCISE AND WHY? The Barbell Deadlift! Technique is so important to get the most out of the movement. When done correctly, there is so much to gain from a deadlift. I enjoy teaching the exercise just as much as practicing it in my own training.

There are so many different variations too!

CHEF MADAN’S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS RECIPE! WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE CHRISTMAS DISH AND WHY IS IT SO SPECIAL TO YOU? My all-time favorite for Christmas would be honey glazed ham and roast turkey. I love these dishes because they are Christmas classics. Each Christmas I always opt for a traditional feast. Tradition brings meaning to our celebrations and help bond us to those we love. It lends a certain spirit around the dining room table that nurtures the family connection. The feeling of joy and excitement, on that one special day of the year where the feast awaits us!

HOW TO GET THE PERFECT DISH! Home is where the heart is and so is the perfect dish. Cooking is an art; my heart and soul goes into making every dish perfect! Trying is the key, it’s all about mixing different combinations to find the perfect balance and lots of practice.

MADAN’S TOP 5 TIPS TO GET THE PERFECT ROAST 1. Seasoning: Using ingredients that can be savory, sweet, acid or bitter favored to create deep favors and bring together different ingredients to balance the dish.

2. Right temperature of roasting: Make sure your oven is set to the correct temperature, all ovens are different and so are the recipes, so make sure you convert your oven temperature accordingly.

3. Correct Timing: This one is the biggest tip, make sure you set a timer! The day can get away from you while you’re celebrating, a timer will be your best friend.

4. Let it rest: The meat needs to rest because the juices need time to redistribute, otherwise you will be left with brown, overcooked meat.

5. The right knife to carve: We all want that picture perfect slice, using a carving knife will get you there. It will allow you to cut wide slices without it ending up a mess and are nimble enough to work around the bones
