zone 5 - palakarai, trichy.

This plaza is proposed with the idea of creating a space that affords privacy to the passerby that stops for shade or to access the pushcart vendors without encroaching into the roads. This helps to avoid interference ino the existing vehicular and pedestrian paths.

The density of the palakarai area is such that there is no room for free movement. The 15m encroachment along the face of the canal could be removed to allow for development at the edge. Zoning is proposed for a wider road along the edge for access to the canal front buildings and to simultaneously provide much needed parking space. Cul-de-sacs, as an element, is devised as a buffer/ transition space between two zones.

The intersection of the EDA bridge at the Redeemer’s Basilica is an important transition node. The church owns immense grounds here that encroach into the canal edge and these spaces could be designed so as to encourage interactive activity for the neighbourhood population.

The area between palakarai and varaganeri is primarily residential and houses establishments. The bridge accessing the Ponniah school is frequently used by children who live in the neighbourhood. A child-safe interactive space could be valuable addition to the social life of the area.

Significant Elements:

• cul-de-sacs as a buffer element demarcate subtle land-use changes.

• Pedestrian Bridges designed to encourage the neighbourhood social growth by allowing ease of acces.

• Reed beds at the sewage inlets into the canal as priliminary traetment measure.

• Specific cultivation of plants that increase pest control on social scale.

• Contours as a natural seatings and interactive component.

The studio for Spontaneous Architecture was founded in 2005 by Sharon Rotbard at the Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem. At Spontaneous Architecture , students invent experimental straying techniques, explore improvised construction materials and develop immediate technologies. During the program, the students build the first building in their career.

Toward a non-violent architecture: Summer 2014 in India. In summer 2014, between September 11th and October 23rd, Spontaneous Architecture returned to India for an International studio held in collaboration with CARE school of Architecture in Trichy.

The program combined a 3-week intensive traveling seminar in 3 very different Indian Cities (New Delhi, Chandigarh and Ahmedabad) with a 3-week spontaneous architecture studio at the KVK research agricultural farm in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

co-curated by Architect Sharon Rotbard, Israeli architect.

DESIGN CONCEPT

In our design we focused on the sun path and the way it affects the shadows in the structure.we found out in our research that on the shortest day of the year the sun is getting inside the structure but on small part only for few days during the year. the rest of the days the floor is shaded. we continued developing our wall ideas. and finally decided to make a vertical bamboo walls on the east and west side.

LoCATIon DETAILS

Taluk Name : Bodinayakkanur

District : Theni

State : Tamil Nadu

AGAMALAI TRIBAL VILLAGE

Agamalai is a Village in Bodinayakkanur Taluk in Theni District of Tamil Nadu State, India. It is located 14 KM towards North from District head quarters Theni. 17 KM from Bodinayakkanur. 526 KM from State capital Chennai.

Language : Tamil

Time zone: IST (UTC+5:30)

Elevation / Altitude: 345 meters.

Above Seal level

The reserved forest of agamalai was already marked as a naxal area by the government of india.

There is are few public spaces like ‘thee midhikum idam’ for ritual happenings. a open space like verandah for the set of two houses where interaction happens actively.

There is no government transport facilities like buses or vans. apart from private vehicles like two wheelers only 3 private jeeps and horses act as a mode of transportation in which one jeep is for goods and services.

There is no proper primary schooling facility for this tribal village and also the nearby periyur tribe which holds 40 homes has no basic amenities like schooling and farmer’s platform to trade their goods.

8

The existing old house was once used as a space for farmers now it is damaged and not in use.

Government bylaws plays a major role in this area such wont be able to get any patta approval from the government entire area will be owned by the forest department.

There is only single road access to the site which connects periyakulam and agamalai tribal village.

The site is 0.5 kms inside from the rangers’s check post of agamalai reserved forest.

There are few man made alterations and plantations of the site for agricultural purpose.

Mango trees are seen in un even patterns of location while areca-cut trees are in parallel locations which clearly tells that the plantations are man made.

• kannakkarai water falls and the stream makes a young stage in the development of river valleys and the landscape (erosion cycle).

• Mango, Lemon and jack fruit are the naturally grown trees here while areca cut trees are grown once for the agricultural purpose which is also seen on the site.

• The water stream at north side of the site leads to the reservoir of sothupaarai dam at a distance of 1.5 kms.

slope is also act as a swale cut which drains water to the seasons.- the spaces near the stream where seen with some which denotes the maximum level of water nearer to the site during flood times.

The path holds the existing major circulation inside the site that leads to kannakkarai falls and also connects to the path across the river to reach periyur tribe.

9

Site inference:

The site is seen with some existing cut and fill surface where once used as a space for local farmers and guards with a swale cut for draining the surface water to the stream.there is a water fall and a stream nearby where we can hear the sound of the water all around the site.

There is a need of a defensible space in some part of the site where there is a chance of crime.

The swale cut is also ACT as a Pedestrian path for the people who cross from periyur tribal village.

Due to the presence of water dam nearby there is a chance of Animal encounters here.

The entire site is seen with gentle slopes and covered with vegetations like Mango, Areca-cut and Silver oak trees.

a study undertaken to identify its internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as its external opportunities and threats.

Site Selection:

The site was choosen because of the existing abandonned condition. and it has a strong element of attraction that is the stream. and also this site is the juncion for the two tribal villages Periyur and agamalai.

The Children’s village, a gamalai.

The Children’s Village, Agamalai: The entire campus comprises of a school building hostel unit parking area kitchen garden, farmer’s trade point, storage units and also with informal spaces like sit outs and stramp

SITE PLAN

The design concept is to build a simple cost effective structure in the form that wont affect the existing trees on site. soft landscape acts as a key to preserve the existing landform and vegetation on site. units are placed respective to the sWoT analyisis with user point of view

11
a Residential Primary school for Tribal kids around Agamalai

The existing hillocks in the site will act as an element of exploring the campus. kids love levels and playing in such kind of landforms. the first impression from the stramp or the entrance will be a tree inside the building which will express its location by itself.

Every kids start to dream when they involve or attach them towards nature. kids love to sit or sleep near windows so the hostel unit is designed with more openings. emergency exits were implemented in as it is a G+2 building. the entrance of the hostel building has a central courtyard were students can be organised or assembled for prayers and attendance.

Seatings were given in the form of traditional ‘aalamarathu thinnai’ which means a platform surrounding a tree for the accomodation. New plants and trees are also placed to increase the green cover of the site area. paths are given in the forms abstracted from the other units nearby.

Guest house is placed on the location where there is a higher volume of the water stream so that the person can feel the place even when he was inside the building.

Design Criteria: To explore the design and form of building typologies that are the result of pressure on urban lands with a thrust on issues like urban land economics, technology and ecology.

ConTEXT

The Site is Located In West Adayavalajan Street of Srirangam. Srirangam (formerly Vellithirumutha Gramam) and Thiruvarangam in Tamil Nadu is an Island part of the city of Tiruchirapalli, in South India.

CLIMATE

The Climate of Trichy and Srirangam is Tropical. Average Temperature range (Degree celsius):

Summer_Max 37.1^c Min 26.4^c;

Winter_Max 31.3^c Min 20.6^c; Rainfall:835mm.

A Day in Srirangam

We Spent a Day in Srirangam to Study and understand the peoples circulations and visitors populations. and also we spent another day to study the Spirtual experience , heirachy of Restrictions and the circulation of peoples at the various time period to get the approximate population level of visitors inside the Temple so Emotionally What Attracted the customers are Cheaper and hygenic food. i also made some conversation with the peoples who prefers to eat in hotels. and they expected a clean environment too.

apart from the 7 prakarams with massive walls, the Temple Complex has 21 very colourful sculpted gopurams (consecrated gateways with towers), 50 sub shrines, 9 sacred pools, gilded Vimana (dome) over the sanctum sanctorum of the presiding deity, and other interesting features such as fresco paintings. active interchange of human values was happening between the public and rulers in planning, designing, executing and using the Temple complex. Part of the temple is dedicated to the temple with its regular sevas, festivals and activities of Vaishnav Cult. The other part is vibrant with regular human settlement with all its daily routines and events. The temple is the nucleus and the life of people is centred around it.

ranganathaswamy Temple represents a materpiece of human creative genius and is the world’s largest functioning temple replete with astounding architecture and ornamentation.

SRI RANGAM VIEW

DESIGn ConCEPT:

The concept of Micro climate inside the Building keeps the building thermally comfortable inside the building. exposed brick jaalis on one side of the water body which makes the Sun light to fall on the water and will be reflected on the walls. these element is an abstract of spirtuality from the SriRangam Temple. when it comes to a row house natural lighting is a major aspect one must look because there is no window clearance on both sides so the Open to Sky brings light inside the buiding and also act as a space highlighter inside the buiding.

An Architectural Design competition conducted by Adhiyamaan College of Engineering (Architecture Department).

Life is all about History that is how we lived and the present and future in which how we gonna interpret it. the modern rural Building developments of Tamil nadu often seems to be be a template blocks that are rapidly followed as a trend because of the influence of cities. By breaking all the activities and inter relation of the buildings within the street makes the Entire place to be isolated with their own boundaries in the names of ‘Plot’. In such buildings the traditional activity generators like Thinnai, Courtyard are not in use. the building itself naturally losing its functionall value on both inside the house and outside the house.

Architecture and Emotions

For me Perception of the spaces are entirely linked or inter related with experience that come across. Textures and Materials are the two basic elements that plays a vital role in emoting a space. apart from Texture and Material our interaction with that space is vital too because that creates the soul which emotes our memories with the space. For instance the feel what had at older age when we enter our school or college campus in which we get emoted with the space that we are interacted once. in terms of space making if these interaction spaces can create more activity then it will be emotes our feelings.

i use to experience such emotions whenever i walk into any traditional sites of Tamil nadu. Moreover these traditional space makess me to remember the timeline and lifestyle of my ancestors.

Melattur, Tanjore is one among the traditional sites of Tamil nadu with lots of heritage value. Melattur is 200 years oldgenerators like Thinnai, Courtyard are not in use. the building itself naturally losing its functionall value on both inside the house and outside the house.

DOCUMENTING, ANALYSING & a B s T ra CT ing F or T he design

Design Brief: Designing a space that emotes me.

The Design concepT is to enhance and interpret the traditional house with today’s modern context of rural areas in which the entire street traditional values for living space is preserved. the site location is taken hypothetically in melattur in which the damaged not in use residence are to be demolished and reconstructed with the design proposal to preserve the street functions of Melattur agraharam.

ArchiTecTure AnD emoTion for me is the space where i use to interact more. i think residence is such a space where i use to live in my different age which generates different memories with the space that emotes my feelings. from the childhood where i use to play in thinnai and play in the ramp that in the middle of the steps to the kitchen graden which is at the backyard om my home. To be more clear i see dwelling is different from living because living is actually residing in a space at a time which may change but dwellings are the space where my ancestors stayed and interacted with the space. those traditional dwellings are the space that makes the timeless in Residential Architecture.

C ourtyard and t hinnai h ouses in M elattur

Courtyard can be defined as the opening present inside a building. Home is where every common man communicates with the built environment in his day to day life by means of his daily activities. Every dwelling is inadvertently an expression of its user in terms of built form. Hence, the dwelling is essentially planned in such a way that it instantly satisfies all the basic necessities of the user in terms of its spatial requirements.

The overall idea of the Design is to bring the abstraction of the tradition elements in the site context. Documenting the traditional architecture of the context and analysing for the possiblity of those elements for todays scenario gave a better picture on abstracting those Traditional Elements.
