EXPLORE THE NORTH SHORE AND BOUNDARY WATERS
The northeastern corner of Minnesota shares an international border with Canada. To the east, the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior’s North Shore is awe-inspiring. Four distinct communities dot the shoreline: SchroederTofte-Lutsen (the West End), the quaint harbor village of Grand Marais, historic Grand Portage and further inland lies the Gunflint Trail. No matter how you travel, your journey here is part of the adventure.
From the Twin Cities (240 mi.) and Duluth (80 mi.)
Head north on Interstate 35 through Duluth. Then, take Highway 61/North Shore Scenic Byway through numerous beautiful communities until you reach Cook County. The Byway is one of 37 designated All American Roads in the U.S.
From Thunder Bay, Ontario (100 mi./160 km.)
Follow Highway 61 south to the Canada/U.S. border until you reach Cook County.
Fly directly to the state-of-the-art regional airport near Grand Marais or utilize the nearby seaplane base. For commercial flights, fly into Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP), Duluth (DLH) or Thunder Bay, Ontario (YQT) and enjoy the drive.
Take the path less traveled and navigate by boat or sailboat to Cook County. The Lake Superior Water Trail extends 150 miles from Duluth to the Canadian Border.
Discover Cook County, MN—where the North Shore meets the Boundary Waters. Enjoy breathtaking scenery, hiking, paddling and charming towns for the ultimate outdoor adventure.
ARTSY, QUIRKY AND OH-SO-FUN
Grand Marais is a place to be inspired. Stroll through the business district along the iconic harborfront, try your hand at a new art or craft and indulge in locally caught fish, handmade pizza, craft beer and hard ciders. It's also the place to find the perfect gift or keepsake to remember your visit.
Incorporated in 1903, Grand Marais is a charming town bustling with activity, life and business. If you’re up early, you might sneak a peek of local fishermen bringing the catch of the day to restaurants and cafes ready to serve up lake-to-table meals. Adventure awaits outside the town center, where you’ll find miles upon miles of hiking and biking trails and winding roads for scenic drives.
The three communities of Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder mark an entry into Cook County and the beginning of adventures untold. Rich in history and culture, this area has a long history of logging, fishing, trade and recreation, bringing people together to make a life along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder offer a mix of lodging to suit any style: from private cabins to large, full-service resorts with pools and activities departments ready to guide your adventures. They’re launching points for unforgettable experiences. You’ll find a multitude of trails and popular attractions like Lutsen Mountains, Superior National at Lutsen, the Jackpot/High Climber Mountain Biking Trail and the Gitchi-Gami Trail, to name a few.
The Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway (County Road 12) is a 57-mile paved roadway that begins in Grand Marais and winds its way inland, reaching the Canadian border at its most northern point. Along the trail, you’ll find extensive wilderness, hundreds of inland lakes and streams, entry points to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and endless opportunities to explore the outdoors.
Explore the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center for a glimpse into the area’s past. Paddle the pristine waters of the BWCAW and disconnect from the modern world. Find adventure during the winter months on groomed cross-country ski trails, snowmobile trails or out on the lake for ice fishing. Choose your adventure and savor every moment.
Grand Portage sits at the northeast corner of Cook County and has long been known as a place to gather, build community and make memories. It’s a launching point for adventure and a gateway into Cook County from Canada. This area is home to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and represents one of the earliest Ojibwe settlements in Minnesota.
There’s no shortage of things to do in Grand Portage. Start with a visit to High Falls in Grand Portage State Park. At 120 feet, it’s Minnesota’s tallest waterfall and an incredible demonstration of the power of water. You can also explore the Grand Portage National Monument & Heritage Center, hike to the summit of Mount Josephine, test your luck at Grand Portage Lodge & Casino or take a day trip to Isle Royale National Park.
Experience the raw power of North Shore waterfall season as melting snow transforms rivers into roaring cascades, creating a breathtaking spring spectacle. As water rushes toward Lake Superior, waterfalls become a sight to see, hear and feel. While spring offers peak flows, these falls impress year-round—freezing into ice sculptures in winter, warming for river hikes in summer
and providing a stunning contrast to fall colors.
Cook County is home to Minnesota’s most diverse waterfalls, from hidden roadside gems to iconic drops like Devil’s Kettle and the 120-foot High Falls of the Pigeon River, known as “Minnesota’s Niagara.” No matter the season, these waterfalls are a must-see.

Temperance River State Park has a short hiking trail loop that will bring you around the falls and a deep, narrow river gorge with about 10-15 drops. According to the state parks section of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website, it is said that the Temperance got its name because, unlike other North Shore streams, the river had no bar at its mouth. At one time, the waters of the river flowed so deeply and so strongly into Lake Superior that it washed out the usual debris.
Eight miles up the road from Grand Marais, at Judge C.R. Magney State Park, you’ll meet the Brule River. The Brule River is best known for the Devil’s Kettle waterfall, where half of the river splits to enter a cauldron and disappears to places unknown. Enter Judge C.R. Magney State Park to get to the parking lot.
A breathtaking series of large cascading waterfalls, this location includes parking and a walking path, which makes hiking along multiple waterfalls possible. The Cascade River flows from one ledge to another for a total drop of 900 feet during the last three miles to Lake Superior. Find Thompson Falls on the Cascade River near the intersection of The Grade and Bally Creek Road, and keep going to find the Hidden Falls of the Cascade River downstream from County Road 45 on the Superior Hiking Trail.
In Grand Portage State Park, at 120 feet, the High Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Minnesota. The handicap accessible trail is about one mile long. During peak waterfall season, find a nearly permanent rainbow at the base of the High Falls. Parking is available in the Grand Portage State Park Welcome Center parking lot.

Lutsen isn’t just a winter destination—it is open year-round with activities the entire family will enjoy.
The Summit Express Gondola is the most popular sightseeing adventure in Minnesota, delivering expansive views of the Sawtooth Mountains and Lake Superior’s North Shore.
Enjoy lunch with a view or explore one of the overlooks on Moose Mountain. For adventure seekers, the Alpine Slide offers a thrilling ride down Eagle Mountain. You control the speed, but everyone ends up smiling.
Imagine a world where your kids are free to roam, explore and discover without the distractions of screens or the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Nature in Cook County offers just that—wild spaces where curious kids can investigate their surroundings and thrive. From the rustling leaves of a forest trail to the stillness of a lakeside sunrise, this stretch of the North Shore offers endless opportunities for parents to introduce their kids to wilderness experiences.
Outdoor adventures don’t have to be BIG or remote to be memorable for kids (though we have those kinds of adventures, too!). Age-appropriate adventures that meet their interests and skills are a great place to start. Focus on creating positive experiences. Ensure kids have a great time by matching their pace and focusing on fun. As they build their skills and endurance, introduce longer trails or new outdoor activities like snowshoeing, backcountry hiking or canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
Of course, the goal isn’t just about getting them outside—it's about helping kids build a lifelong love for nature that sparks curiosity, fosters creativity and strengthens both their bodies and minds. There are endless places to introduce kids to year-round wilderness experiences across Cook County. Explore our manageable, family-friendly trails like those found at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center (be sure to pop inside to see the exhibits, too) and Grand Portage State Park. These hikes offer a chance to explore without feeling overwhelmed. Families looking for the next level of hiking with their kids can try trails like Cascade River State Park, Magnetic Rock Trail, Oberg Mountain Trail or the trek out to Devil’s Kettle (Judge C.R. Magney State Park).
ASK QUESTIONS TO DEEPEN ENGAGEMENT ABOUT WHAT THEY HEAR, SEE AND FEEL.
WHAT DOES THE WATERFALL
TELL ME A STORY ABOUT HOW YOU THINK THIS LAKE GOT ITS SHAPE (IT CAN BE A SILLY
SHOW ME A BLUE FLOWER OR NAME A SPECIFIC FLOWER FOR OLDER CHILDREN TO FIND.)
POINT TO THE TALLEST TREE YOU CAN SEE.
Treasure hunts, nature bingo cards or games like I Spy can also create exciting ways to engage kids in nature. Bring tools like binoculars, compasses or sketchbooks for added fun! Don’t be afraid to take breaks for further investigation of a stream or large boulder and, of course, some trail snacks! Just remember to respect local wildlife and Leave No Trace as you explore.
Outdoor programs are another way to teach children about nature, local cultures and history in Cook County. Check out the many familyfriendly programs at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center, Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center and Grand Portage National Monument. Kids can even become Junior Rangers at Grand Portage National Monument. Many resorts in the area also offer naturalist-led hikes and other educational programs for guests.
Guided tours are another way to introduce your family to wilderness experiences in Cook County. Guides provide an additional layer of safety and knowledge to the experience. Many local outfitters and resorts offer guided tours throughout the year, including experiences like kayaking or canoeing, fishing on Lake Superior and dog-sledding.
In Cook County, nature beckons even the tiniest of explorers from the shores of Lake Superior to the heights of the Sawtooth Mountains. Our rugged coastline, towering pines and cascading waterfalls offer families everything they need to create wilderness experiences in Minnesota that will fuel their sense of adventure. Whether you are tossing rocks into the waves from Grand Marais Harbor or planning your first family camping trip to the BWCAW, enjoy the beauty of Cook County.
Remember to prepare your kids for outdoor adventures, too. Sun protection, bug repellent and plenty of water are key to enjoying the outdoors together. Teaching your kids how to prepare for wilderness experiences and enjoy the journey will help them foster a lifelong love of our wild spaces.
LET’S GET OUTSIDE AND EXPLORE TOGETHER!
The natural world around us is powerful and yet peaceful. Invigorating yet restorative. Stepping into the wild creates opportunities to disconnect, recharge and reconnect to yourself, your loved ones and the world. It’s more than just the fresh air, the gentle rustle of wind blowing through the trees, the smell of the earth. Simply being in nature is a mind-body experience that has insurmountable positive wellness impacts. You’ll feel it when you enter our region, and you’ll return home feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and more connected to the world around you.
Spending as little as 20 minutes in nature reduces stress and anxiety. Imagine what could happen after a day on the trails. Walk below a lush canopy. Feel the earth beneath your feet. Listen to birds chirping. You’ll find nearly 400 miles of incredible hiking trails, including the legendary Superior Hiking Trail, in Cook County, and endless opportunities to wander, wonder and focus on wellness.
Humans were never meant to exist in solitude. While alone time is essential, shared experiences build the community and social connections we all crave. When was the last time you paddled a canoe? It takes teamwork, cooperation, communication and mental fortitude, and it's a fun and unique way to experience the wilderness. Whether you’re kayaking along Lake Superior’s shoreline or canoeing on a peaceful inland lake, you’ll reconnect during the journey and return to land feeling empowered after what you accomplished together.
Being immersed in nature supports better sleep. The combination of increased physical activity and exposure to natural elements helps regulate circadian rhythms and improves your sleep. Spend a day biking the paved Gitchi-Gami State Trail or backcountry single-track, or explore the forest on a pair of crosscountry skis, and you’ll see what we mean. You’ll be sleeping like a bear cub in no time.
Take a journey and explore the Gunflint Trail's beginnings and the people who helped shape today’s unique, rural community, including the Anishinaabe, Voyageurs, miners, loggers, resort owners and current residents. gunflinthistory.org
