Dear Maimonides Community, This Annual Report represents an important step in our beloved school’s journey from strength to strength as one of the nation’s flagship Modern Orthodox Day Schools. It has been a number of years since the school’s last Annual Report. We have much to acknowledge, celebrate, and share as we look back on a strong and pivotal year. We also look forward to advancing the strategic priorities in our Plan for Sustainable Excellence on a clear path to even stronger years ahead. For an overview of this path, you will find a link to it at the end of this report outlining the findings and directions from our strategic planning process during the last school year. The four pillars of our Plan involve elevating our performance in our school’s culture, pedagogy, curriculum, and finances.

Part of our reason for reviving the Maimonides Annual Report is to better engage with all of our stakeholders around essential information on our programs, operations, and finances. Our hope is that the more informed you are about all aspects of our school, the better we can engage each other in leveraging the best support for our school’s future. We invite all of you to participate with us in helping sustain and grow our school at this critically important time.

Maimonides is not only the source of an extraordinary legacy with a longstanding global reputation for excellence in Modern Orthodox education. It also continues to be an extraordinary school that is continually executing the bold vision of our founder, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveichik zt”l, to teach and model torah u’madah im derech eretz. Last year, we once again rose to that legacy and took some important steps to elevate the religious and educational experiences for all of our students. While temporarily relocating our Early Childhood Center to new spaces at Beth El-Atereth Israel, we consolidated the Kindergarten through 12th grades onto Saval Campus, moving us toward one of our strategic priorities in the years ahead: a more cohesive learning and living community. Doing so through leasing the Brener Building enables the school to boost its revenue stream and reduce overhead. We have therefore taken a major step toward achieving a balanced budget in the next few years, another key strategic priority for the school. We spent the better part of a year developing a blueprint for our program, facility, and operations to build upon these bold decisions, and to continue to move toward sustainable excellence. We are enthusiastic about our direction and look forward to sharing the excitement with you as we build from strength to strength.

We hope you find this edition of the Annual Report informative and helpful for understanding who we are in 2019-20, and the strong and thriving school we are poised to be in the years to come.

Dear Parents, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, Students, & Supporters of Maimonides School, Since its pioneering founding more than 80 years ago, Maimonides School has always been radically ambitious in its goals for its students. Imagine a school where students are prepared and inspired with the tools to be both contributing citizens in our American society and also fully halachic observant Jews, where we are molding adults who can equally navigate the siddur in the synagogue and the issues facing us in elections!

Maimonides teaches children necessary skills and inculcates underlying values, while also simultaneously providing educational excellence in both Jewish and General studies. We prepare students to excel in the most elite Yeshivot and study programs in Israel and in America, and also in the university of their choice and in the subject matter of their preference. A significant percentage of our graduates are in Israel, serving in the army or in national service, and otherwise contributing to Israeli society.

This complex, multi-faceted mission for all students, male and female, was ground-breaking in its day and is still unique to this day.

As our founder, the Gadol Hador Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik zt”l, observed in 1968: What idea lies at the root of the school, and what is our objective? …We are struck by one prominent dichotomy within Judaism that is perhaps the most important problem we face today … We are indeed members of the human family; However, at the same time, we belong to a separate distinctive community, dedicated to a rich tradition, worshipping God in a rich manner. We have a very singular hierarchy of values. We have a holy tongue. We even have a holy land to which we are committed.

All of these values are reflected in the school each day of the year, along with our connection and love of Israel, which permeates everything that we do, as well as our special focus on building community and helping young boys and girls develop the skills and strength of character necessary to succeed emotionally and socially in the complex world in which we live.

Maimonides has truly been a blessing for American Jewry for so many years, a lodestar for the aspirations of what a Modern Orthodox school can be. It has achieved its mission with thousands of alumni and numerous other admirers over the past many decades. This report illustrates the ways we have continued and are continuing to achieve that mission this past year, and how we hope to do so with your continued partnership in the years to come.

Religious Zionism: Love for the State of Israel

We live our lives with the understanding that Medinat Yisrael fulfills our nation’s spiritual destiny. The Jewish homeland is central to our history and identity, and to the future of the Jewish people.

• We are the first and only Jewish school in the nation to send its entire senior class to the annual AIPAC Policy Conference, allowing our students, through this trip and our robust Israel Advocacy curriculum, to be the most informed student advocates of Israel at their colleges and universities.

Every year our students, faculty, staff, and parents line up to participate in the entirely student-coordinated Blood Drive, our annual Yom Chesed, and numerous volunteer efforts for the community as a whole. This past year, many of our students participated in a Yachad shabbaton for people with special needs. Our students ran activities, assisted with the programming, and ensured an inclusive, warm environment.

Academic Excellence One of Maimonides’ signature and enduring commitments is to academic excellence in Judaic and general studies for ALL of our students in order to enable them, with all of their interests and various learning styles, to attend universities of their choosing with strong Jewish communities.

• Each year 70% of our graduates attend universities with easy access to tefillah and to Torah study (e.g. Yeshiva University and JLIC campuses). The vast majority of the remaining students are attending local universities in greater Boston with strong, ongoing connection with their local Jewish communities, or schools with Hillels or Chabads.

• 75% of our K-12 faculty hold advanced degrees.

• We offer nine Advanced Placement courses and multiple advanced electives.

• 89% of our seniors were accepted into their top-choice college or university.

Torah , Jewish Literacy and Deep-Rooted Jewish Identity We believe that the way to foster long-term commitment to Judaism is by partnering students and teachers to develop a deep, authentic understanding of Torah. We are a vibrant community comprising numerous cities and ages, but what unifies us all is our shared commitment to halacha, Torah values, and inspired Judaism.

• More Torah is studied at Maimonides each day than in any other institution in Massachusetts. This was true when the school was founded 82 years ago, and it is still true today.

The Judaic Studies program is complex, including student learning of content, student acquisition and practice of skills, and nurtured feelings and emotions about Judaism. All of this is accomplished while preparing students to apply their Judaism to real-world situations and scenarios.

As a graduate of Maimonides School, Migdal Oz, and Stern College, I feel grateful to have learned in institutions inspired by Rav Soloveitchik and his students. • Maimonides is the only American high school where graduates study Mesechet Shabbat for a full year, ensuring all students learn the underlying principles of Shabbat.

I remember the feeling I had as a senior in high school, which was after the days of the Rav zt”l consistently walking through the halls, and yet I really felt not only his impact and touch on every fiber of our school, I felt tremendous pride in that very fact as well. • Our Elementary School tefillah program, seventh grade explanatory minyan, ninth and tenth grade Beiurei Ha‘Tefillah program, and numerous teacher conversations spark students to consider the meaning of the daily prayers and the role of prayer in a religious life.

• With students from 2-year-olds to 12th graders, Maimonides is the only school in the country where students complete the entirety of Chumash by graduation, along with Neviim Rishonim, a serious Neviim Acharonim program, and EzraNechemia. Students become familiar with each book and each genre of writing so they will forever find each part of our Tanach familiar and accessible (even challenging books such as Vayikra or Yechezkel).

• In addition to a comprehensive and dynamic Talmud curriculum, students build a love of Tanach and strong skills in order to continue studying Tanach after graduating Maimonides.

• Our students are proud of their Judaism and have a mature understanding of their religion. Maimonides exposes our students to the tensions and difficult trade-offs between observance and secular modernity. Our distinction is that we engage deeply and openly with the reality of natural adolescent questions about their Jewish journey, laying a solid foundation for a lifetime of deep ownership of, and commitment to, halacha.

• Special courses explore gender and Judaism, Judaism and the life cycle, the balance between Jew and Gentile, and sustained connection to Judaism at a secular college. The Mock Beis Din considers complex tradeoffs within halacha.

Our eleventh grade Bereishit and philosophy curriculum considers the relationship between Torah and science, and between revelation and history. Jewish financial law is studied in Upper School Talmud and Tanach classes, highlighting that Torah study pervades everything we do.

Our partner yeshivot and seminaries in Israel, as well as our alumni, regularly report that Maimonides students are among the most wellprepared for, and passionately devoted to, advanced study in top-tier programs in Israel.

Learning Outside the Classroom Extracurricular activities are critical elements of a well-rounded education as they provide students with unique opportunities for enrichment and growth beyond the classroom. Our 83 clubs and activities and 20 interscholastic and intramural athletic teams allow students to expand their horizons to learn new skills, and spur exciting interests in a variety of fields and endeavors. They also provide opportunities for students to practice teamwork, manage responsibilities, take on significant leadership roles, develop their interpersonal skills, and learn a lot about themselves in the process.

Extracurricular activities have allowed me to grow outside the classroom. In our rigorous academic environment, extracurriculars have been important to my development of new skill sets which cannot be learned in a classroom. Commitment to Sustainability

Financial Overview Over the past ten years, Maimonides School has experienced a demographic decline in enrollment that has resulted in an operating budget deficit. In Fiscal 2019, that deficit was $1.5 million.

To address this issue, in the spring of 2019 the school developed a plan to consolidate its facilities from two buildings into one. We were fortunate to be able to lease the Brener Elementary School Building to the Town of Brookline for use as part of their school system. As a result, in the coming years Maimonides will be able to both lower operating expenses and increase revenue. Under the terms of the lease, Maimonides will receive more than $5 million in rent over the next five years. As of September, all students in grades K through 12 are now on the school’s Saval Campus, with the ECC temporarily relocating to Congregation Beth El in Newton.

We believe that this move, together with other elements of the Strategic Plan, will enable the school to close its budget deficit and move forward in a position of financial strength.

Maimonides School’s generous supporters have enabled the school to maintain the value of its investment portfolio throughout this period of financial challenge. Over the past five years, the school’s investments — along with the Saval Trust, established some years ago for the benefit of the school — have steadily increased to a total of $20 million.

These steps will also allow Maimonides to continue investing in key areas. This includes financial aid, a critical area of need.

In Fiscal 2019, the school awarded $4 million in aid across 55% of our families, and we will continue to invest in affordability initiatives. Under the Strategic Plan, we will also invest more in our teaching staff, allowing teachers to spend more time with each student. And we will continue to devote greater resources — as we have in recent years — to additional security measures.
