01 Riverside museum

An urban public space

Academic | Individual work

Fall2021 8weeks

Jinan, China

Responsible teacher: Jia Yingying

The museum serves as a pivotal link and transition point between the residential, commercial, and cultural districts, serving as a city's public activity platform.

The site is surrounded by several important historical sites and beautiful scenic spots Across the river, it overlooks the famous historical and cultural landmark of Jinan, the "Liberation Pavilion," showcasing distinctive regional cultural features. On the east side of the museum is Taiping Street, across from which is a large residential area

The most prominent feature of this building is its embodiment of urban inclusivity, providing spaces for exhibitions, leisure, social interaction, commerce, and entertainment. For both visitors and residents, the building is designed to function as a museum while also providing an urban square.

Block generation

There is a height difference in the site, and the main body of the building is buried underground by concealing treatment, guiding residents to enter the site from Taiping Street.

According to the requirements of use, the size and position of the blocks are adjusted, and the descending stairs are introduced to connect the residential and commercial areas.

Design strategy

Some of the blocks highlight the site, echoing the urban architectural fabric and meeting functional needs without obstructing people's view.

Strengthen the urban publicity of the architecture, so that the museum has the attributes of an urban living room at the same time.

Jigang market transformation

Modern integrated community activity center

Academic | Individual work

Fall2020 8weeks

Jinan, China

Responsible teacher: Wang Yun

Over the years, the Jigang Market, which was once a factory, has transformed into a local marketplace. However, as times have changed and lifestyles have evolved, a significant portion of the space within the market has been abandoned.

My design goal is to revamp this market to better cater to the diverse needs of the community and repurpose it as a modern integrated community center. This transformation aims to meet the evolving requirements of the community and the surrounding residents. The new community center will not only provide food and goods but also incorporate recreational facilities, public plazas, and venues for cultural events.

This redesign is not just about renovating the building, it's about enhancing the quality of life within the community, making a positive contribution to the city's sustainable development and promoting social integration.

8

The transportation around the market is convenient. The surrounding residential area rents are moderate, and the living population is mainly elderly.

9
Market is located in Licheng District, Jinan City, with a history of more than 20 years, is an important convenience market in the east city of Jinan "Baoshan Community".

Capital of Finnish Lapland, Rovaniemi is one of the few cities in the world located at a few kilometres from the Arctic Circle:

legacy of people with colourful clothes and special traditions, reindeer farmers and sleigh builders. Rovaniemi is a place made of snow, perpetual dawns and dusks, and it is home to the dancing lights that shine in the sky during cold winter nights – the Aurora Borealis.

Finland is a land of snow, water and forests. the hotel will be interpreted as the centre of a network of services aimed at guaranteeing a holiday experience with every comfort, where Northern Lights and the location inside the forest are part of an exclusive tourism.

Dragon scales

A building system over the mountain

Academic |Team work

Fall2020 8weeks

Shanxi, China

Team members: Yan Xujia, Yu Wanqi, Liu Shiqi

Responsibilities: Preliminary analysis, modules analysis and section drawing

Responsible teachers: Wen Jiaxin, Cao Yujia

The Loess Plateau is one of the four plateaus in China. The special landform and culture have created the special architectural form and rural settlement of cave dwelling.

Now the Loess Plateau has become the most serious soil erosion and the most fragile ecological environment in the world, and the residential houses represented by cave dwellings and local villages are gradually facing extinction.

In order to save the cave dwelling villages that are about to disappear, we try to replace the original relationship between people and nature. After entering the cave dwelling, mushrooms, medicinal herbs and other plants can make use of the special micro-climate brought by the cave dwelling architecture to grow vigorously and rapidly, and bring economic income to the local villages. In order to solve the transportation problem caused by the numerous valleys and valleys of the landscape and the problem of how humans live on the surface of the mountain, we built a scale-like triangular unit system, which not only plans the entire village vertically, but also builds an efficient transportation system up and down.

22

Site analysis

Luliang mountain area is a loess covered mountain plateau, which belongs to a part of loess plateau. Luliang anticline, which constitutes Luliang Mountain range, is the back bone of mountain landform with luxuriant forests. The loess hilly and gully region in the west is the continuation of Luliang mountain to Yellow River valley.

Status analysis

Soil erosion on the Loess Plateau is becoming more and more serious, the yellow land is becoming poorer, the ecological environment is deteriorating, the land is becoming sandy, the climate is arid.

The deteriorating ecological environment has restricted economic development and exacerbated poverty. It is one of the areas where the poor population is concentrated and distributed in China.

Most traditional villages in Luliang mountain area are hollowing out and aging. Traditional villages located deep in the mountains are restricted by the terrain, and modernization is cut off by mountains. Villagers surviving on agriculture or forestry.

Generate analysis

There are two ways to control soil erosion: one is to push the sloping land into terraced fields; Second, plant trees and grass. But neither approach is optimal.

The whole building is placed on the loess Plateau in the form of terraced fields, which can slow the flow and trapping rainwater at the building, reducing river runoff.

By imitating the form of plant roots in the structure and water system of the building, the mountain is strengthened while storing water.

The old cave dwellings in the original part of the mountain need to be updated while preserving local conditions and customs.

(1)Use its own features to put in new functionality.

(2)Living in a new system above the old mountains.

(3)The existing building system provides villagers with a new environment on the basis of a certain protection of the mountain, that is, "soil fixation".

According to the needs of residents in each district, combining the original village layout and the actual terrain characteristics, new villages with different combination methods are formed.

The scattered inhabitants are scattered around the various groups.

Each functional part has the combination of green plants. After the final combination is completed, green plants are all over the whole system in the form of crops or greenery.

Based on the needs of different functional Spaces, basic functional units such as water storage, planting, restaurant, supermarket and residence are composed with the triangle as the basic spatial unit.

New buildings activate the whole system. In the guarantee of human settlement system perfect at the same time, the maximum save soil erosion status.

Derivation of architectural prototype

Basic unit blocks form planning according to use requirements and rules, forming different groups, such as residential group A\B, commercial group, public space group, etc.

This painting by Mr. Wu Guanzhong on the Loess Plateau is extremely famous and has high artistic evaluation and value. We have carried out pixel lattice processing on this painting, trying to abstract the color of the loess plateau and villages. Triangles are often associated with mountains, and the spatial structure of triangles is similar to cave dwellings.

Modules analysis

Residential-planting composite module

This is a housing layout structure that combines living and planting, consisting of residential area and three-dimensional planting room. In this module, living, green planting and proper labor are combined to create a new living and planting mode. Besides eating vegetables, they can also be sold to generate income.

Residential-garden composite module

In Ancient China, planting trees and flowers in front and back of the court was a precedent. The plant landscape in residential area has become the first environment where people have close contact with nature. The garden also promotes the full use of water resources in the vertical living system, alleviates the desertification of the mountain surface and further prevents soil erosion.

Store-restaurant composite module

Catering, shopping, entertainment and other needs of residents. Through the close contact with the outside world and the internal green planting system to meet the supply of commodities, the formation of a good supply cycle.

Public space module

Provide a place for public leisure activities for residents. The main functions are leisure and entertainment, green planting, reading books and so on. At the same time, it can undertake largescale activities with cultural characteristics.

24

Water system analysis

The metaphor of cave dwelling

We try to hide the traditional classical architectural form of cave dwelling in the new scale system by means of metaphor, so that it can achieve the effect of hidden and visible. We point and metaphor through the functional combination represented by the color block combination and the water system represented by the linear grading system,Such system construction allows cave dwellings to be noticed, used and integrated into people's life in a new active attitude, allowing the countryside to survive in a new form.

25

System working principle

In this difficult and fertile land, there is such a vicious circle that is difficult to solve, the interaction of water and soil after the destruction of vegetation, the soil erosion of the land.

The addition of the system restrains the original vicious water cycle from the root, improves the way of life and water use, restores the local ecosystem and saves the damaged nature.

Future development prospect

The scale-like building system adheres to the surface of the mountain, which can effectively prevent soil erosion and improve the local environment.

The Loess Plateau is one of the places where Chinese civilization flourishes, and it is hoped that the ecological environment of this settlement will become better and better because of this building system, leading the local villages to a better future.
