THE TEAPOTTERY P E R S O N A L P R O J E C T | S T O K E - O N -T R E N T, U K The Teapottery is a pottery studio and café known for its immersive „clay-to-cup of tea” experience. In the workshop customers are able to learn how to create stoneware out of clay take it home or donate it to be used in the cafe by other members of the local community.

The studio’s prime location between lively streets offers access to gastronomic delights and cultural attractions like the Potteries Museum. The Teapottery invites people of all backgrounds to engage in a hands-on creative journey, making it a testament to the city’s artistic legacy.

SUNLIGHT IN THE COURTYARD

THE ROOFSCAPE The main design feature of the building is the sculptural roof inspired by vases collapsed during the wheel throwing process. The skylights provide natural light to the deeper set parts of the building and promote natural ventilation in the common areas as well as the kitchen and firing room.

The Teapottery features a large flexible courtyard that can be used as exhibition space or outdoor cafe seating area.

The scheme aims to create a local environmental awareness hub. With the focus on providing tactile, calm and joyful background to eye-opening art instalations concerning plastic pollution. By adapting the existing building on the site as part of the gallery, the scheme reinforces the ideas of reuse and upcycling. It is a part of a wider area masterplan to reclaim pedestrian space and illuminate the streets.

BUILDING AS A PIECE OF ART The building is shaded with solar power operated curtain wall facade, made up of recycled plastic panels. Created in collaboration with a plastic waste artist, the facade underlines the building’s function as an exhibition space, collaborative hub and an environmentally friendy landmark.

DESIGN FOR DISASSEMBLY The building incorporates materials from a buy-back scheme or recycled sources within a 1000 km radius, primarily from the UK. The design emphasizes accessibility and adaptability, with timber connections and fixing-free zones, along with high ceilings, durable components, and minimal secondary finishes.

MAIN EXHIBITION HALL Plastic waste art by independent artists is exhibited in the gallery spaces along with pieces made by the community in the workshop. The south-facing, mechanical solar shading system adds colour and fun to the exhibition rooms.
