How might we approach architectural systems and modes of construction using existing and ‘hackable’ methods, construction waste and found materials to offer a considered response to the dialectics of a particular

How can the reuse/reinterpretation of existing infrastructure and building materials link into a larger system, addressing concerns of broader socio-political conditions of a particular area/region?

Loy Yang (Remastered 2035) is the reuse and adaptation of the decommissioned Loy Yang Power station and brown coal mine. It proposes a hybrid, closed-loop, renewable energy plant, research facilities and a rehabilitation plan for the ravaged landscape left behind by the open-cut mine. Globally, the move away from fossil fuel towards renewable energy is resulting in vast, obsolete infrastructures such as this area of the Latrobe Valley in Gippsland. This thesis considers the role of the architect in addressing this growing legacy.

McKay Creek station, situated near Falls Creek, Victoria, emphasises the interplay between existing hydroelectric power generation and the revitalisation of the surrounding natural environment. The project places a strong emphasis on environmental regeneration and aims to enhance biodiversity within the surrounding Alpine National Park, aligning with the Trust for Nature vision.

The introduced, low-fi infrastructure facilitates the reintroduction of native vegetation throughout the site and surrounding trails. The station hosts both researchers and visitors, monitoring and managing the ecosystem’s recovery, furthering scientific knowledge and engaging the community in ongoing environmental stewardship. Additionally, the project links in with existing walking and cross-country ski trails providing opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with the site.
