The 12 Metre Yacht Club Gives Back Race for Ukraine Raises $20,000

The 2022 Race for Ukraine, hosted by the 12 Metre Yacht Club (Newport. Rhode Island), provided a fundraising platform that supported the people of Ukraine. A total of $20,000 was raised for medical supplies for the people of Ukraine. The race, open to all sailboats with PHRF ratings, was championed by Steve Eddleston, Commodore of the 12 Metre Yacht Club and owner of America Cup’s winning 12mR yacht Weatherly.

Donations to Ukraine were made through Heart to Heart International (HHI), a global humanitarian organization whose

mission is to improve healthcare access around the world by ensuring quality care is provided equitably in medically underresourced communities and in disaster situations around the world.

Ida Lewis Yacht Club (ILYC) and Bristol Yacht Club (BYC) provided simultaneous race starts at each end of Narragansett Bay. The Herreshoff Marine Museum (HHM) acted as the Organizing Authority, registering and scoring all entries. The International Twelve Metre Association (ITMA) also supported this event.

2022 Safe Harbor Race Weekend Overall, Amazing

Sixty-two teams in 11 classes competed in the second annual Safe Harbor Race Weekend in Newport, Rhode Island. The regatta’s fun meter seemed always to be pegged at max, whether at official social functions or dockside minglings at the three host venues: Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, Safe Harbor

New England Boatworks, and Safe Harbor Jamestown Boatyard. Predicting frustratingly light air on Friday, the Race Committee wisely moved up the racing by one hour from a scheduled noon start; however, the planned windward/leeward buoy racing for the IC37s had to be cancelled completely while an Around

NEWS & EVENTS | NOTICIAS & EVENTOS

Prudence Island race that started for all other Division 1 classes had to be shortened to two-thirds of its original length. Division 1 sailed their regatta on Narragansett Bay, while Division 2, comprised of two classes for Superyachts, sailed theirs “outside” – just beyond the Bay’s entrance on Rhode Island Sound. In a more solid breeze there, the Superyachts completed a 15-mile navigator’s race on Friday, just fine.

Division 2 was a spectacle of racing. The majestic 91-foot custom yawl Bequia might have been the most visually arresting of the Superyachts competing at the Safe Harbor Race Weekend had it not been for the equally magnificent profiles of six other Superyachts that, along with Bequia, comprised the event’s Division 2. Aesthetics aside, Bequia turned in the finest performance over three navigator’s races to win the Superyacht B class and take overall honors for the division.

Winning Superyacht A was the 76’ sloop Zemphira. “We took advantage of collective local knowledge aboard and were able to tack quickly and go into places where some of the other Superyachts didn’t want to go,” said Bequia’s tactician Mike Toppa (Newport, R.I.). “Overall, it was a fantastic regatta. The Race Committee did a nice job, modifying the schedule based on the wind forecasts and giving us good, high-quality racing. As for the shoreside hospitality, we enjoyed it all… the morning breakfast, the big parties on Friday and Saturday nights, the Awards on Sunday… everyone was happy and there was lots of food, music and fun…you couldn’t have asked for more.”

Having sold more than 2,000 of its inflatable sailing dinghies worldwide, Tiwal is now launching the Tiwal 3R, its new sport dinghy. This is a technical and compact boat for serious sailors. Easy to assemble, it’s on the water in just 25 minutes. And it can be taken anywhere, in the back of the car...

The mix chosen by the R&D team makes the Tiwal 3R a powerful and sporty sailboat, but also one that’s technically and physically accessible. Emmanuel Bertrand, President and Co-founder: “The Tiwal 3R’s performance is close to that of rigid-hulled sailing dinghies, but it’s easier to access. It planes quickly. Its power allows it to play with the water, ride the waves, and make long runs with fast, consistent speed. It’s a pleasure to get the boat going in the groove and to finetrim the rig for optimal performance”. The boat gets its power from the rig. For the sails (77sq ft or 67

TIWAL 3R, THE SUPERCHARGED INFLATABLE DINGHY CARRIED IN BAGS

sq ft), the R&D team and North Sails went for a laminated fabric from offshore racing. The mast and boom are 90% carbon, contributing to the responsiveness of the boat. All the sail controls return to the helmsman on each side of the boat and offer a great finesse for trimming. The boat is also light, with a total weight of 121 lbs.

The Tiwal 3R’s inflatable hull gives the sailing dinghy an amazing rigidity, with its fusion material in conjunction with the aluminum exoskeleton. The daggerboard and rudder are made in composite material, and highlight the overall rigidity of the boat.

The result? A behavior similar to that of a rigid boat, while keeping its compact functionality for transport. Marion Excoffon, the boat’s designer adds: “Close your eyes and you can compare it to a rigidhulled dinghy. Open them, it fits in 2 bags!”

It’s a warm afternoon in late June and I’m cruising aboard a gorgeous J Craft Torpedo in the St Tropez Gulf, in the heart of the French Riviera. The epitome of elegant and sleek lines, her varnished wood decks shine beautifully under the late afternoon sun. Passing by dozens of docked megayachts, we glide into the small and exclusive port of St. Tropez. Our German captain expertly approaches the pier closest to town so we can step off in style. A few tourists take pictures of us and of our classy boat that represents the savoir-faire of a timeless era and exudes an irresistible allure. St. Tropez may be J Craft’s social playground in the Med, but these motoryachts come from way up north in the Baltic Sea where their soul is intertwined with their Viking heritage. It is particularly in the island of Gotland where Swedish boatbuilder J Craft and its master craftsmen and craftswomen have strived to maintain the ancient local traditions that have defined the region’s shipbuilding history. J Craft is rooted in Sweden’s rich seafaring heritage and its people are descendants of the Vikings who settled in Gotland in the 12th century. J Craft was born in 1999 with the first 38-foot Cabrio Cruiser. It took a whole year of work, but Hull #1, Polaris, was delivered to her new owner, His Majesty Carl Gustaf XVI, King of Sweden, in August the same year.

A striking 1950s and ‘60s retro vintage-style boat, the Cabrio Cruiser was distinguished by classic design, beautiful materials, exquisite engineering and state-of-the-art, thoroughly modern technology. Polaris was built around a modern fiberglass hull with mahogany veneer and powered by two Yanmar engines with straight shaft propulsion.

Based near St. Tropez, Polaris is still being used 20-plus years later and remains the Swedish King’s favorite boat for Mediterranean cruises. His Majesty operates his own boat and was happy to surprise the owners of hull # 18 of the Torpedo model during its delivery in 2019. In 2009 J Craft introduced the 42-foot Torpedo. With the original founder falling ill, the company was quietly acquired by entrepreneur Radenko Milakovic, in order to safeguard the yard’s precious heritage. The new owner has been actively involved in the birth of the new Torpedo model that, although retaining the Cabrio Cruiser’s elegant and timeless design features, was a brand new and upgraded interpretation of her older sister’s vintage style.

J Craft designed the Torpedo’s hull in direct cooperation with Volvo Penta to accommodate the rudderless IP system that offers effortlessly intuitive and precise handling. J Craft Torpedos are equipped with the latest generation Volvo Penta IPS engines (Volvo Penta IPS 500,

600-R or 650-RS) for speeds of close to 50 knots and exceptional maneuverability. They have regularly undertaken long trips, in the South China Sea from Hong Kong to Hainan, in the Baltic Sea between Gotland and Stockholm, and in the Med where they frequently cruise from St. Tropez to Ibiza or to Sardinia and back.

All the completed boats are tested in the fierce Nordic waters surrounding Gotland to ensure maximum capability, performance and safety for owners around the world.

The entire construction process is unhurried and characterized by exacting craftsmanship, a key aspect that everyone in the yard takes great pride in maintaining, under the guidance of master builder Johan Hallén, who has been with J Craft since its inception. Quality, in its most traditional form, takes time and it is not surprising there is a lengthy waiting list.

J Craft mixes unique values in a product of unparalleled quality, beauty, strength and durability.

For example, the Torpedo’s mahogany decking, which is lacquered and varnished 18 times, the leather trim and stainless-steel finishes, are all built to last thanks to ancient traditions and carefully selected manufacturing processes.

J Craft’s stands for great woodworking skills. The Torpedo’s polished woodwork is made from sustainably sourced, rainforest-free West African mahogany. The graceful, curved lines are made out of solid wood by using a steam-bending technique that has not changed since the Vikings built their original long ships. This is all complemented by gorgeous Nardi steering wheels, fine Italian leathers and luxury fabrics from top designer brands. The result is a glamorous accessory for a new-life perspective on the water where excellence and innovation are in perfect balance.

The open cockpit with two sundecks is designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 adults plus a captain for day cruises. The spacious cabin, when needed, sleeps up to 4 guests in comfort.

J Craft will be available in the USA from 2023 onwards. Mr. Milakovic foresees the opening of a US office in Fort Lauderdale to ensure prompt assistance to the lucky owners in the Americas.

A Torpedo to US specs, complete with gyro stabilizers and latest technologies, will be presented during the first half of 2023 and you can expect to see this head-turner while she cruises New England in summer 2023.

I could easily visualize classy J Crafts docked at mansions with private docks in South Florida as well, whether in Palm Beach, Bal Harbor, South Beach, Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, or Coral Gables. These boats would add sophistication to anyone’s home. With her classic, figure-of-eight shape, the Torpedo is much more than a clever collection of lines and curves. The unique design is the result of a long heritage of knowledge of the sea and the most contemporary Dolce Vita or det ljuva livet, as the Swedes would say!

If you’re looking for variety on a tropical bareboat charter, head to St. Martin and its neighbors, St. Barths and Anguilla. Each island is a world of its own, the distances are short, the winds are predictable, and the food is divine.

Cruising here means landing at Princess Juliana Airport on Sint Maarten where the final descent flies over Maho Beach with jumbo jets coming to within feet of the sand just before touching down. People come from all over to watch this spectacle and to get tossed by jet exhaust when the big birds take off again.

St. Martin is also called Sint Maarten because half the island is French and half is Dutch but there’s no official (or even visible) border between the two sides. We landed on the Dutch side and took a taxi to the Dream Yacht Charter (DYC) base in Anse Marcel on the French side.

At the end of May, the season begins to wind down which means fewer crowds and better boat availability so we were upgraded to a 2019 Lagoon 450 S catamaran named Panui. Our itinerary was laid out carefully to maximize time and minimize expense. You see, officially you need to check in and out of each country which is a slow and often expensive process. We decided to take a land tour of the Dutch side because traveling by car lets you skip this bureaucracy and then stick to the French side by boat. Since St. Barths is also French, that leaves only Anguilla to worry about.

Anguilla is north of St. Martin with pristine beaches and a laidback vibe. However, Anguilla is British, so we were facing paperwork, Covid tests and fees. We found cheap Covid tests in Marigot, the capital of French St. Martin, filed our paperwork with the base and then pointed our bows north.

We arrived at Sandy Island first. It’s a spit of sand and coral with one beach bar that’s only open when someone comes over by boat, starts the generator and plugs in the blender. We dinghied to the beach via a narrow channel and landed right when everyone had gone so we had the place to ourselves. The next day, we sailed up to Prickley Pear Cays (also a part of Anguilla). This pair of uninhabited islands has moorings on the south side but then you dinghy around to the sandy beach on the north side with its protective outer reef. Aside from pangas ferrying hotel traffic, we again were alone but this time, there was an open bar, so we idled the afternoon away with cool drinks and sand between our toes.

The next morning, we cut between Anguilla and St. Martin, heading northeast. It was the sole bash to windward of our week but it only lasted two hours and then we turned south toward St. Barths on the horizon, enjoying a brisk beam reach

sail all the way down.

Unlike low key Anguilla, St. Barths is the glitzy sister of the trio. The capital of Gustavia is like Rodeo Drive with high fashion boutiques, fine dining and a superyacht clientele that frequents the island’s exclusive racing season including the St. Barths Bucket and Heineken regattas. It may not make sense to sail to the Caribbean to shop for a Dolce & Gabbana bag, but if you want one, you’ll find it here.

We anchored by Les Gros Islets and dinghied to the city dock to check in. The process here is very dialed-in due to the volume of upscale visitors and we were out looking for lunch in no time. We found a gourmet French meal at Le Repaire and then, to burn off some of those calories, we walked up to the lighthouse. The views of Gustavia Harbor and our anchored boat in the distance were worth the sweaty stroll. St. Barths has its own crazy airport where small prop planes drop vertically from the sky and then level out on the short runway on the windward side. They come in so dramatically, you think they’ll knock you on the head with their landing gear. We stocked up on some provisions and spent a quiet night just outside of town. The next morning, we headed to nearby

Ile Fourchue, a high-sided island with a deep harbor. It’s a quiet place with great hiking and it’s making a comeback after it was nearly denuded by goats. In early days, it was the hideaway of Balthazar Biguard, a Frenchman fleeing the French Revolution. He lived his hermit lifestyle here for many years and is buried on the island.

It was nearing the time to start heading back north so we set sail for Tintamarre Island National Park where we caught a mooring and reset ourselves back to broad beaches and leisurely swims after the glamour of St. Barths. Because Tintamarre is a park, we couldn’t stay the night on our mooring, so we headed west two miles and anchored off Ile Pinel and its two bars, both of which were blissfully closed so we enjoyed a quiet night.

For our last evening, we returned to the northwestern corner of St. Martin to Grande Anse, a colorful tiny town with one main street chock full of galleries and eateries serving up giant lobsters and local beer. The DYC marina in Anse Marcel is just around the corner so we didn’t have far to go to return our boat. However, the marina entrance is narrow and tricky

which is why the base insists on driving guests out and also back in. Since they had my VISA card on file for damages, I didn’t put up a fuss and when I saw that it took three guys and a dinghy to get the boat back into the slip, I didn’t feel a bit bad about relinquishing the helm

These islands are a sailor’s paradise, but DYC also charters powercats so powertboaters can cruise as well. The next time you want to go to only one place but want to experience multiple worlds, start on St. Martin. You won’t be disappointed.

Tips

Stay out of Simpson Bay and Phillipsburg on Sint. Maarten for check-ins. Fast, cheap and easy check-ins can be done in Margiot at Ile Marine fuel dock or in Anse Marcel at the marina.

See at least one jet land at Maho but stay out of the path of those taking off unless you’re looking for a heavy exfoliation by way of flying sand.

Provision lightly because you won’t want to miss the many bakeries, pastry shops and restaurants serving up the best island-influenced French fare.

Tossed with Colavita Spaghetti, this creamy lemon pasta with shrimp is perfect for anytime.

Ingredients

½ lb Colavita Spaghetti

4 tbsp Colavita Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

4 tbsp butter

1 lb extra large shrimp, rinsed, peeled and deveined

½ cup dry white wine

4 cloves of garlic, minced

3 tbsp fresh lemon juice (1 lemon)

Grated lemon zest from 1 lemon

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Hot pepper flakes

Freshly chopped parsley

Directions

Bring a large stock pot of water to a rolling boil. Once boiling, salt the water generously. Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook according to the timing on the package.

Drain the pasta, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid.

Heat 2 tablespoons of Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil and 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic, hot pepper flakes and lemon zest. Allow to simmer slowly, stirring occasionally for about 4 minutes.

Season the shrimp with salt and pepper. Add them to the pan and cook until they are just pink – about 2-3 minutes per side.

Remove the shrimp from the skillet and reserve on a plate. Keep them warm.

Pour white wine and lemon juice into skillet and bring to a boil. Scrape any browned bits of food off of the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon.

Add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons of Colavita Olive Oil to the skillet.

Toss the cooked pasta, shrimp, and parsley in the oil and butter mixture until coated. If the mixture seems dry, add some of the reserved pasta water a little at a time.

Taste and adjust for seasoning adding more salt, pepper or parsley as needed.

A pop of color in a necklace, leather bag, wool scarf, or in accenting on footwear, can add a little flare; especially when styled for evening wear or a jet black suit. However, more style-conscious dressers and shoppers may find that mixing various materials and textures all in black delivers an even more chic impact. Most of the same applies to design and décor for the home so long as you stay true to your limits. Make sure your noir centers any living space to your liking. Then again, with a revisit to the basics, maybe your interiors and furnishings need a facelift. Take for example the bold and black Studio Henk’s Cosy Sofa 3.5.

As the holiday season rolls in and invernal destinations begin to set sail and ski into 2023, there will be the perennial pressure to find the perfect gift for loved ones, friends and perhaps even a few colleagues. Don’t sweat it. Just give everyone a book.

If all of this sounds rather straightforward and approachable that’s the point. Even the most erudite gift-giving adult knows that after fine jewelry and art; a rarefied expression or vintage this time of year will always be a big hit. Here are some of the choicest bottles from around the globe that will be making their début this season.
