Family member names: Kevin, Kathy, Riley (8) Jack (6) Hailey (4) James (3)
Pets: Turtle named Kiwi.
Street: Fairview.
How long have you lived in the neighborhood? 7 years.
Is there anything your neighbors might know you for? In the summer we all rotate hosting a Flamingo Friday. We all get together everyone brings a dish to share. The parents can catch up and the kids all run around and have the best time!
How long have you been with your spouse and how did you meet? We have been together since 2010. We knew each other since we were kids, but didn’t start dating until after college. We grew up in the same neighborhood (NW side of Chicago) and went to the same grammar school (St Francis Borgia).
Tell us about your kids. Riley and Jack both go to Roosevelt. Riley loves cheer and tumbling at NCA. Jack likes to do activities at the part district, he loves technology. Hailey is at Jefferson and also loves tumbling. James is at the Park District and loves it, he also loves anything sports and cars.
What do you like to do together as a family? We get together with our family every Sunday. We love that the kids can make memories with their cousins regularly.
Tell us something special about your family. Every St. Patrick’s Day we make Irish Soda for our friends and family. Our recipe is in this issue! We also attend the Northwest Side Irish Parade. We are both of Irish descent so this is a special time of the year for our family.
What are your professions?
Kathy was a nurse in the community for 14 years and recently pursued my Masters to teach nursing. Currently Kathy is a Clinical instructor for North Park University. Kevin the Director of Operations for an Asset Manager.
Are you passionate about any charities/nonprofits/ philanthropies? We have two that are near and dear to our hearts. The first being M-NASAR, they provide aids to kids that may need some extra help in park activities and camp. They helped our son Jack have a great summer at camp and have extra assistance during the classes he takes at the park district. Everyone we’ve met has been so wonderful with the kids. The other is The Children’s Tumor Foundation. Our neighbor’s, who have become great friends, son was diagnosed with NF and they are very involved in the foundation.
Are you involved in the community at all? This year Kathy coached our daughter’s Spirit Cheer team and Kevin was an assistant football coach. Kevin also helps coach our daughter’s softball team.
Describe your perfect day in Park Ridge as a family. Our perfect day in Park Ridge is a walk to Dunkin with the kids, then hanging in the backyard with friends and family.
Favorite Park Ridge Restaurant? There is so many but we love Pazzi Di Pizza. Kathy loves their chopped salad. We love Harp & Fiddle & Pennyville!
Favorite Park Ridge Park? We love Southpark! Having four little kids we love that the park is fenced in and feels safe.

Special needs planning is the process of arranging financial and legal matters to support a person with a disability. This is a crucial step for families who have a loved one with a disability. The goal is to make sure that the individual’s future is secure, and their needs are met, even after their caregivers are no longer able to help.
A special needs trust is a legal document designed to manage financial resources for someone with a disability. It spells out detailed care and ensures that the individual can receive financial support without jeopardizing their eligibility for essential government benefits like Medicaid or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The trust is managed by a trustee who is responsible for using the funds for the individual’s needs.
When a person with a disability is unable to make their own decisions, establishing a guardianship or conservatorship may be necessary. A guardianship involves appointing someone to make personal and healthcare decisions on their behalf, whereas a conservatorship involves managing their financial affairs.
We protect your interest with a fierce devotion to solutions that maximize your bottom line. We commit to the highest principles of integrity, excellence, and client service. We grow with you by evolving our service platform to accommodate naturally changing conditions.
1. Protects Benefits: Without careful planning, additional money or assets could jeopardize a person’s access to essential government benefits. Special needs trusts are specifically designed to address this issue.
2. Ensures Proper Care : Establishing guardianships or trusts provides a clear framework for who will make decisions and manage finances for the person with a disability.
3. Financial Security: Special needs planning ensures that there are sufficient funds to provide for the individual’s needs and that these funds are managed properly.
4. Planning for the Future: Special needs planning ensures that all aspects of the individual’s future—such as medical care, housing, and daily living expenses—are thoughtfully addressed.
To start special needs planning, it’s important to work with professionals experienced in disability and estate planning like the legal professionals at Anthony J. Madonia & Associates. We will guide you through setting up trusts, drafting necessary legal documents, and ensuring compliance with government regulations. Contact Anthony J. Madonia & Associates at info@madonia.com or (312) 578-9300.

BY RESIDENT & JUNIOR WRITER
JOSETTE STEINFELS
What street do you live on? Ashland.
What school do you go to? I am a sophomore at Loyola Academy.
What sports do you do? I do taekwondo, track, and skiing. In taekwondo there are two parts; the part I do now is called sparring.
How many years have you been doing it taekwondo? Since I was 4 years old, I have been competing in taekwondo sparring since I was 10 years old.
What made you love this sport and make you want to continue it all these years? At first, I was hesitant because I didn’t love taekwondo and sparring that much, but I went through the hard work and practices. I have made it really far and I am more motivated to keep doing these sports. Also, taekwondo and sparring are creative.
I understand that you participated in World Championships! Yes, I made it to the World Championships twice. Both World Championships I have gone to were for sparring, where I fought against the best in my division from other countries. Last year, I was in an age division called Cadets for competitors aged 12-14. This year, I qualified again for the World Championships in a new age group and since I was the youngest age in my age group, it was a much higher level and more difficult. The World Championship was in South Korea this year. Even though I didn’t medal, I won a match against an athlete from India, but lost to an Italian in the end. It was really cool to represent the U.S. I am so thankful for the experiences and I hope to do better next time. I felt really honored to achieve the opportunity to compete. I had to train a lot to get myself ready and train every day.
When you are not training, what do you like to do for When I am not training, I like to go for runs, hang out with my friends, and hang out with my family.
What are your plans for after high school? After high school, I want to go to college. I want to go to a university in Florida. Florida has some really good taekwondo schools. I just really want and hope to get into a good college and study law or architecture.
Is there anything else you would like to share? I hope to go to the Olympics in 2028.
“All around excellent experience for my son. He had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed. Everyone in the o ce was kind and helpful. We were sent home with all of the information and prescriptions needed. The follow up a few days after went great. Thank you!”

When we hear the bass line “dum dum dum da da dum dum,” folks from the 90s think “Ice Ice Baby,” by Vanilla Ice but those from the 80s and a more refined musical palate (my opinion only) hear the original song with that iconic bass line “Under Pressure” by David Bowie and Queen. There is a debate on whether they are actually the same or slightly different and did Vanilla Ice steal it or not, but that is not what I am here to talk about. Lately, I have been thinking about the latter.
Pressure is all around; professionally it is deadlines, goals,
projections, staffing models… Socially, it may be juggling schedules, FOMO, or staying on par with the community. Heck, even kids have higher levels of pressure than they ever have with grades, sports, and social media. Pressure can be a two-sided coin. It can do amazing things like creating diamonds. The Beatles recorded their album Please, Please Me in ten hours because they had pressure to capitalize on a hit song and keep touring. The album is jam-packed with classics like the title track, I Saw Her Standing There, Love Me Do, Twist and Shout, and
others. Pressure also causes burnout and poor performance. Hence the sophomore slump, which is why no one owns two Quiet Riot albums. Good or bad, it is the reality these days. So, we have to deal with it and that, to me, is the key. There are lots of ways to get there: meditation, yoga, exercise, travel, music, gardening, or even Netflix and chill. I like to go out and tell jokes at a mostly empty venue. You do you, as they say, and find your thing. I know we are busy, and it is not easy to find the time. This is when we learn from Vanilla Ice and just steal it from something else.
Gone but not forgotten –Main Street’s 1980’s Café: Walter’s Hideaway
BY FORMER RESIDENT AND AUTHOR VIC LARSON
WALTER’S HIDEAWAY, NOW CLOSED, was a lovely restaurant at 28 Main Street. It was opened in 1971 by partners Walter Mizialko and Marjorie Johnson. The entry foyer, lit by sparkling lights, led into a glass-roofed dining room with the feel of al fresco dining. This photo was taken in 2005. Do you have any memories of Walter’s? Share those memories with us and others on the Stroll Park Ridge Facebook group!

In January, I had the immense pleasure of dining with seven other guests at the A+ Italian Steakhouse located in Edison Park. From the moment we stepped through the doors, it was clear we were in for a treat. The elegant and relaxing ambience, with its tastefully appointed chandeliers casting a warm glow, and a live piano player set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. Each dish we sampled received rave reviews from our entire party of eight!
A+ Italian Steakhouse is situated at the historic site of the former beloved Elliott’s restaurant. Before its grand opening in 2024, the restaurant underwent an impressive transformation with a brand-new kitchen, bathrooms, ceilings, carpet, and those beautiful chandeliers. The result is a gorgeous, modern space that retains a cozy, relaxed, welcoming feel.
This gem of a restaurant is familyowned and operated. Cousins Adi Yzeiraj, the owner, and Aldi Prifti, the general manager, run the show with other family members filling various roles. Their warmth and dedication truly shine through in every aspect of the dining experience. Upon entering, you’ll notice the large yet intimate bar that serves up a variety of traditional cocktails, including an Old Fashion that’s possibly better than any you’d find at a Wisconsin Supper Club.
We began our culinary journey with a delightful assortment of appetizers. The arugula salad was a refreshing start, followed by perfectly grilled calamari, bruschetta al pomodoro bursting with fresh flavors including fresh mozzarella and the star of

the starters, roasted bone marrow. For some of us, it was a first-time experience with bone marrow, and we were thoroughly impressed. The entrées that followed were equally remarkable. First up was the New York Strip Steak, cooked to perfection at medium rare and boasting incredible tenderness, thanks to a minimum aging period of 28 days. Other exquisite options included the delicate and flavorful Chilean Sea Bass, a savory Chicken Marsala, and a zesty Veal Limone. Our meal continued with a selection of mouthwatering pastas. The Homemade Gnocchi Pesto was delightfully creamy and fragrant, while the Lobster Cappellacci was a luxurious treat with tender lobster nestled in each pasta parcel.
Despite feeling quite full, we couldn’t resist sampling the housemade desserts. The Tiramisu was a perfect balance of coffee and cream, the Tres Leches was delightfully moist and sweet, and the Crème Brûlée offered a satisfying crackle of caramelized sugar atop silky custard.
Throughout our meal, we were fortunate to be served by Angelo, who provided fantastic, attentive service. He was knowledgeable about the menu, offered excellent recommendations on wine pairings making us feel well cared for. We look forward to coming back soon for one of their wine dinners. It’s wonderful to have a quality steakhouse back in the neighborhood!

A Community that plays together... stays together! Happy times around Park Ridge.
BY RESIDENT JOAN MATTINGLY
DID YOU KNOW... that nationally acclaimed architect Charles Stade, a Park Ridge resident, who designed St. Andrews Lutheran Church, designed another church in Park Ridge that has since been torn down?
Stade was selected to be the architect of the Good Shepherd Methodist Church, built in 1963 at 2000 West Sibley.
Like most of Stade’s churches, Good Shepherd’s design was characterized by its simplicity, use of natural materials, careful attention to detail including efficient use of space and a reliance on natural light and volume. The shape of the building reflected the building committee’s mission to create a structure that was “theologically conceived,” “liturgically oriented,” “architecturally distinctive,” “witness to the Gospel,” “proclaiming a traditional faith in an architectural language of our day,” “celebrating God’s gift of creativity” and “testifying to the centrality of worship in the life of the community.”
there for 13 years beginning in 2001. In 2014 Embers moved to its present location at Our Lady of Ransom in Niles. Good Shepherd Methodist Church was then demolished to make way for 10 single family homes.
The roofline flowed from the educational wing into the sanctuary, emphasizing the primacy of worship. The care in detailing is evident.
As the church community declined, the church was sold; Embers Elementary School operated
Before the building was demolished, Len Johnson, a masonry contractor and local history buff, obtained permission to rescue elements of the building. His collection includes the building’s cornerstone and a copper box “time capsule” containing copies of a Bible, the church’s Hymnal, Book of Worship, photographs, membership lists of church groups and autographed student religion class lists, and a copy of a contractor’s pay request indicating a construction contract amount of $134,550. Charles Stade reportedly designed hundreds of churches in his career. Good Shepherd Methodist Church in Park Ridge is one of four area Stade designs acclaimed by the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
In 1978, Good Shepherd was selected by the AIA and the Chicago Historical Society to become part of the Chicago Architectural Archive. These recognitions did not save the building from demolition.

HELLO, PARK RIDGE! We are Rod Tuffcurls and The Bench Press. We are the Universe’s greatest musical entertainment, and a lot of the band and crew now call Park Ridge home!
What prompted you to start your band? In 2008, our original band played a wedding, and everyone there said, “Your cover band is way more fun than your original band.” Well, jokes on them, because we are really good at listening to what our fans want, and so here we are, 16 years, and over 2,000 shows later. Also, double jokes on them, because we’ve since written an original album full of hits, including one smash hit that we perform live at every show.
Tell us about Rod Tuffcurls and The Bench Press: “Tuffcurls show”, is 3 hours of dancing, singing, and sometimes screaming, to all of your favorite songs, while surrounded by your favorite people, as you are reminded of easier times and let all of life problems and concerns temporarily slip away, as you vibe in the moment and enjoy a truly top tier musical act. It’s impossible not to have fun. The band’s energy onstage is intense, the song selection is all over the board and so vast, the light show and production are unbelievable, and often times you are getting this world class entertainment right in your hometown, or maybe a burb or two over. You’ll hear everything from Queen and Toto to Taylor and Chappell, pop-punk to musical theater, and maybe a couple of TV theme songs in there for good measure. If you’ve never been, come experience a Tuffcurls show for yourself!
How long have you lived in the neighborhood?
Rod Tuffcurls (Tom), guitar, lives in the Carpenter neighborhood for 2 years now, across the street from Jonathan Trailer Thomas (Jerry), lighting engineer and tour manager, who’s been here for 4 years. Drummer, Dick Celebrity (Gil), lives in the Roosevelt neighborhood for 7 years. It is our dream to have TuffQuarters in Park Ridge one day and rehearse and conduct our band biz here!
What advice can you offer to the residents of your neighborhood? Enjoy every day living in one of the best cities in the world! Also, try and have music play a role in your life and family. Go see shows, have living room dance parties, play an instrument, sing in the car or the talent show, whatever! However you do music, just make sure it’s fun and making you happy, that’s the most important part.
Do you have any upcoming shows? Yes! Rod Tuffcurls and The Bench Press will be performing at the amazing Joe’s Live, in Rosemont, IL, on Saturday, April 12th, at 8 PM. Tickets are on sale at our website, RodTuffcurls.com
Only other thing to know, is that after 15 years of Rod Tuffcurls shows, we started TUFF TAYLOR, and all Taylor Swift Tribute show. It’s amazing and incredible, and if you are a Swiftie, or know Swifties, it’s a must see show! TuffTaylor.com for more info and nearby shows.
BY RESIDENT SAWYER (MOLLY) KENNEDY
HI, STROLL PARK RIDGE READERS. I am Sawyer, a Silver Labrador, and just about one year old!
Family Members: Paul, Molly, Sam, Tommy and George
Is your pet an angel or a bit of a troublemaker or spoiled? Sawyer is an angel when she is walking and earning treats at cross streets but her devilish side comes out whenever a meal is being made or school lunches are being packed up.
Does your pet have any specific talents or tricks? Sawyer hasn’t met a sprinkler she doesn’t like. She loves any source of water, including the bathtub. It’s a total bonus if someone is in said bathtub. Sawyer is a huge fan of utility marking flags especially the blue, orange and yellow ones. When Sawyer is walking on the leash her favorite game is to try and chase down the car that is driving by. She has yet to win!
Is there anything other neighbors or pets would know your pet for? Everyone thinks Sawyer is a Weimaraner because of her color and eyes.
How would your pet tell the story of the day they met you and your human family? Sawyer was a surprise for Sam,Tommy and George. They thought we were running an errand to pick up something for our basement construction project but they were surprised when we pulled up to the breeders house who had Sawyer in her arms.
Has your pet ever run away or gotten into trouble? Sawyer is always two steps ahead of Tommy and George. You can see her wheels turning, thinking about what snack and how she is going to go about stealing it! This game she is winning.
What are her personality traits? Sawyer is very friendly. She loves any attention from neighbors and dogs. She is playful, cuddly and lazy all in one.
What is your pet’s favorite Park Ridge park? We walk around Northeast Park every morning and love saying hi to our regular dog friends.
What is her pet peeve? Sawyer’s biggest pet peeve is when we eat and she has to watch from her play pen.

As we all celebrate here in town
Passing the drinks all around
These family post cards 120 years old
Remind me of the stories i was told
Of my grandfather Michael Connery
Which means so very much to me
Of when he came here in the 1870s
We in park ridge all are the same
No matter how different our names
Unless we are native American Indians
Across the seas our stories all begin
Most came here with nothing at all
Following the dream of liberty’s call
Some had family already here
Many escaping old country fears
All hoping for a better life
One free from strife
Those immigrants from so long ago
Started the families we all now know
They all waited to get in long lines
Starting our family tree vines
Whether two centuries or ten years
They found a dream by settling here
All worked hard and made their way
To give us the life we have today
So as we raise our glass in cheer
Let us thank their spirits near
Be amazed by our commonality
The past that link us all- you and me!
the making’. If this sounds like you, you’ve come to the right place!
I’M LARRY KOHN, a proud Park Ridge resident, husband, father of two. I founded Olympian Plumbing three years ago to bring trustworthy and knowledgeable plumbing services to our community. We specialize in residential emergency repairs, often providing same-day service to get your home back to normal as quickly as possible.
Can you tell us about your family? I met my wife Alex in 2019 while living in Chicago. In the past 5 years we had two kids, started a business in 2022, got married in 2022, and moved to the burbs in 2022. (Big year) I grew up with a large extend family with over 50 cousins who were my first friends as we spent our weekend up north in Wisconsin every summer. I have two sisters both with a handful of kids and married into a large family as well.
What inspired you to start your business? We only get one shot at this thing called life, so might as well follow your gut. I saw an opportunity and couldn’t pass up the challenge. There was something inside me I can’t explain that made me quit my job and go after it.
What is unique about your business?
“I had an outstanding experience with Olympian Plumbing. From the moment I called, their customer service was impeccable and very professional. The technician arrived on time, quickly diagnosed the issue, and provided a clear explanation of the repairs. They were respectful, clean and highly knowledgeable. The work was completed efficiently, and the results were flawless. I also appreciate their transparency with pricing - no hidden fees or surprises. Olympian Plumbing truly went above and beyond to ensure my plumbing systems were back in working order. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of reliable top-notch plumbing services.”
KATHLEEN CLARK

What sets you apart from others in your industry? Being myself and a big branded plumbing truck helps us stand out from the competition, plus we have a great online presence that we have been building since we started.
What advice can you offer to the residents? Annual maintenance will always save you money in the long run as well as doing full replacements when needed to keep your home running tip top. If you don’t change the oil in your car the engine isn’t going to last. Same goes for your home.
