The truth is if you have children, property, or assets—no matter the size— an estate plan is essential.”

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!

Why Estate Planning Matters

According to a survey by NAEPC Journal of Estate & Tax Planning two-thirds of Americans don’t have a will or any other form of estate plan in place. This means that over 60% of adults are leaving the fate of their assets, dependents, and healthcare decisions up to the state. There are several reasons why Americans delay their estate planning.

MISUNDERSTANDING THE NEED

Too many people believe estate planning is only for the wealthy. The truth is if you have children, property, or assets— no matter the size—an estate plan is essential. The NAEPC survey highlighted that nearly 70% of Americans think estate planning is only for those with significant wealth.

INCOMPLETE PLANS

The NAECP survey revealed that over 30% of people who begin estate planning never complete it by signing their documents, making their plans legally invalid. Often, this happens because they get stuck on the final steps or don’t have access to a notary or witnesses when they need them.

PROCRASTINATION AND FEAR

We protect your interest with a fierce devotion to solutions that maximize your bottom line. We commit to the highest principles of integrity, excellence, and client services. We grow with you by evolving our service to accommodate your naturally changing conditions.

Some people avoid thinking about end-of-life planning because it feels uncomfortable or overwhelming. Others simply believe they have plenty of time. But life is unpredictable, and without a plan, your family could face lengthy legal battles and added stress.

COMPLEXITY AND COST

Traditional estate planning can seem intimidating and expensive, often involving multiple meetings with attorneys and costs that can easily run into the thousands. According to the American Bar Association, many are deterred by the high cost.

HEALTHCARE AND ADVANCE DIRECTIVES

Nearly 40% of Americans over age 55 don’t have an advance healthcare directive, leaving their healthcare wishes unclear if they become incapacitated.

Everyone should recognize the importance of creating an estate plan. Unfortunately, without this crucial step, people leave their loved ones vulnerable and unprotected. Let us help you get started. If you already have one started, bring it in for review and updating and we will be sure it is legally binding.

Beef Brisket That Would Make My Bubbe Proud

INGREDIENTS

“For my family, this brisket is synonymous with Rosh Hashanah and Passover. If I didn’t serve it, then I’m pretty sure no one in my family would talk to me for a year.”
JUSTIN KRON

• 5-6 pound beef brisket

• 2 packets of Lipton Onion Soup Mix

• Kosher Salt

• Cracked Pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Sear each side of the brisket in a large pan on medium-high heat for approximately 4-5 minutes/side. Add a generous pinch or two of kosher salt and some cracked pepper to each side while browning. Lay out 4-6 sheets of aluminum foil that will be large enough to wrap the entire brisket. Pour 1 packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix onto the foil and lay the brisket on it (fatty side up). Pour the 2nd packet on top of the brisket. Wrap the foil around the brisket tightly. Set the wrapped brisket (fatty side up) into a baking pan to catch any of the juices that may leak out during roasting. Roast the brisket at 475 degrees for 1 hour and then turn down the heat to 325 degrees and roast for another 2 hours. Let cool while wrapped for at least 30 minutes before unwrapping. Then use an electric knife to carve slices against the grain. Try and save as much of the natural juice from the brisket as you can and pour it over the meat before serving. Serves well with roasted potatoes and your favorite vegetable.

Enjoy!

Say Hello to

The Family! Saccomanno Saccomanno

Family members: Sue, Joe, Jami (age 41) and Matt (age 35). We have no pets at this time, but we often dog sit for our childrens’ dogs, Moose (a 7-pound Pomeranian) and Dante (a 110-pound Great White Pyrenees). What an adventure when we sit both at the same time!!!

How long have you lived in the neighborhood? We moved into our home on Wisner Street when we were married in 1980.

Is there anything your neighbors might know you for? We produced “Attempting Fame,” the 1995 Field School Variety Show. It was a great fundraising event for the school, and we have many best friends because of it.

How long have you been with your spouse and how did you meet? We have been together since 1970. We met at a sockhop dance at Notre Dame High School in Niles at the Mardi Gras carnival.

Wedding Day 1980 at St. Paul of the Cross. Our reception was at the Park Ridge Country Club.
At our home on Wisner Street.

What is your profession? We are both retired. Joe was a Professional Civil Engineer and even worked as Director of Public Works in Park Ridge for many years. Sue worked at Resurrection Medical Center for 42 years as a Medical Technologist Laboratory Supervisor.

Tell us about your kids. Our daughter, Jami, and her husband John, live in Burr Ridge with their children, Kinzie (8 years old) and Jack (5 years old). The children are involved in numerous activities in Burr Ridge/Hinsdale. Our son Matt lives in River North. Matt was an outstanding football player at Maine South and went to the state championship numerous times. Both Jami and Matt graduated from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Sadly, our son Joey passed away at age 12 from bone cancer. Our community was so supportive during this time which included the formation of Joey’s Star Foundation. Joey’s Star Foundation is now a combined with The Michael Cuccione Foundation, which supports childhood cancer research.

What do you like to do together as a family? Throughout the year we go to our family home in Wisconsin. Where we have established family traditions which includes the town’s 4th of July Parade and Venetian night (where we decorate the boat with lights and we all parade around the lake to the fireworks). The grandkids love “Grandmas Toybox” and get a new toy every time we go. We take a family trip each year to Disney World and enjoy all the festivities. At Christmas time we make ornaments, decorate the tree, sing songs, go to the Macy’s Walnut Room and have our son’s annual ornament and cookie exchange party.

Tell us something interesting, unique, or unusual about your family. When Hillary Clinton came back to town, she spent time with us; and Bill Clinton was in our home when he was governor of Arkansas.

Are you passionate about any charities / nonprofits / philanthropies? Over the years since our son passed, we have been involved in numerous childhood cancer organizations and events which include Relay for Life, Make A Wish, and the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Foundations.

Are you involved in the community at all? We enjoy Stroll and spending time with our Park Ridge friends.

Describe your perfect day in Park Ridge as a family. Walking Uptown together to enjoy a nice dinner at one of wonderful restaurants or just walking to the library and Panera to meet our friends for coffee.

Favorite Park Ridge Restaurant? Pazzi di Pizza, Fire & Wine, Pines Tap Room.

Favorite Park Ridge Park? Hinkley Park and sitting on Joey’s bench.

Favorite Park Ridge historic house? Hillary Clinton’s childhood home which sit right across the street from us.

Blockhead

MY YOUNG NEPHEWS came over for a visit and for the first time in a long time, I stepped on a Lego, a pain on par with childbirth, I assume. Some people have an accident and come up with amazing breakthroughs and profound thoughts. Take Alexander Fleming, he invented penicillin because of a dirty petri dish. In the movie Back to the Future, Doc Brown invented the flux capacitor after bumping his head and created time travel. Me, I hopped around on one foot and mumbled profanities.

The ordeal got me thinking, though. A tiny Lego stopped me from doing the thing I set out to do. In other words, a block blocked me. A block is an interesting thing. It can be something to build with; like a Lego, but it can also be a thing that prevents something from happening; like blocking a shot in basketball. I also find that blocks create blocks. For example, sometimes when I am writing a joke, I feel stuck and cannot get the joke started or get to the right punchline. This is called ‘writer’s block’. When dealing with writer’s block, I am forced to find ways around the block, so I will need to try new angles and methods until I find the one that gets the ideas flowing again. So now, the block I had preventing me from writing a

joke created the building block to what ultimately becomes the finished joke. The block created a block.

Parents do this all the time. The rain stops you from going to the Cubs game; you turn it into a movie night. The power goes out; you turn it into a game of flashlight tag. Kids remember these times and when you model turning a negative into a positive, it will be engrained in them to do the same in life. Some people say “if life gives you lemons, you make lemonade” I say, if life gives you a block, make another block. It’s not as catchy, but it just might work on a t-shirt someday.

Bo

HI, I’M BO! I am a 4 year-old rescue from One Tail at a Time in Chicago. I was found on the streets of Arkansas and brought up north to find my forever family, and their cats, who I love even if they don’t love me.

Family members: Amy, David, Jake and Ethan Tolemy

Street Bo lives on: Hamlin

Is your pet an angel or a bit of a troublemaker? Well, Bo is very spoiled, hates riding in the car and very dramatic.

Does your pet have any specific talents or tricks? He knows the names of the cats and will stop them from doing something bad if we tell him to “Get (cat’s name)”

Is there anything other neighbors or pets would know your pet for? He always wears a bow tie, a different one for every season or holiday.

PERSONAL

COACHING

How would your pet tell the story of the day they met you and your human Family? My family came to visit me at the shelter and played ball with me. I rode in the car between my 2 boys the whole way home. It was the last time I was well behaved in the car ever again.

Has your pet ever run away or gotten into trouble? Once I ran out and ran up to the neighbor’s dog who is a big feistier and bigger than myself. I ran away scared and back into the house. I was just trying to have fun and that dog was so mean to me! I was so scared and had to go home!

What are his personality traits? He is loving, ridiculous, playful and silly.

What is your pet’s favorite Park Ridge park? He loves Centennial Park

What is his pet peeve? Car rides!

What street do you live on? Linden Ave.

What school do you attend? I go to Lincoln Middle School, 8th grade

What is your favorite class? I love all the electives because there are a lot of choices. My favorite elective is either broadcasting or musical theater workshop.

What is your favorite stop to make in Park Ridge?

I love going to Starbucks Uptown and going to all the different restaurants. I love going there after school with my friends and it’s fun to do homework there.

What activity are you most looking forward to this summer? Going on vacation to France. I’m also

excited to go to the pool and play softball.

What is a hidden gem in Park Ridge that you think more people should visit? I think more people should visit Off The Wall Uptown because it is almost like Starbucks but they have more stuff and it’s super fun because they have games you can play.

What is your favorite book/book series to read at the Park Ridge Public Library? It’s either the Hunger Games series or the Summer I Turned Pretty books.

If you could choose one place in Park Ridge that you would visit everyday, what would that place be? Starbucks or Off The Wall.

What is your favorite place to eat in Park Ridge? I really like Easy Street. Their pizza is really good! I really like pineapple and Hawaiian pizza.

What is something unique about you? I just performed the lead in my school musical as Matilda.

What is your favorite thing to do with your family? I love going to the beach and going to the woods because it is nice to take walks there.

What is the hardest thing about being a kid? Balancing homework, sports, hanging out with friends, and being with family.

When I grow up I want to be... Either an actress, lawyer, or a marine biologist.

HI! I’M CRYSTAL, the woman behind the camera of Crystal Parenti Photography. My specialty is in-home newborn photography but my portfolio spans from tiny babies, fun kid’s sessions, high school seniors, family shoots to personalized branding sessions.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Norridge and made the move to Park Ridge in 2013 after living in the city. We dreamed of being on a block that is walking distance to uptown and packed with other families. Wisner checked off all of our wishes and more!

Tell us about your family? Joe and I have been married since 2012 and we have two kids, Liliana (10) and Leo (7). We also recently adopted two cats Leni and Nella.

What inspired you to start your business? Photography was always a fun hobby of mine and after watching my daughter’s newborn photo session I knew this was where I wanted to pivot my career. I slowly started decreasing my hours at the hospital (I’m also an ultrasound technologist) and poured all of my time into learning everything I could about running a photography business.

What is unique about your business? I’m also an ultrasound technologist so I am the rare person that gets to take pictures

Crystal Parenti Photography

of both your insides and outsides.

What sets you apart from others in your industry? My unique hybrid style of both posed and lifestyle images, my fast turn around editing time and my ability to reel in both children and dads and make the session experience not only painless but fun as well. I pride myself on running efficient sessions to keep everyone moving and the energy positive. Last year I began teaching newborn photography as well. I plan on creating more courses for other photographers.

“Crystal crushes it every single time!!! She is the only photographer I trust to capture the most gorgeous photos of my children and family. Bonus: she is great with my kids and they just love her! We come to her every year and she never disappoints! 10 STARS!” FRANCESCA

expensive matching outfits. Life changes fast. Kids grow up. Even the little things, like the way your family laughs together or how your child holds your hand, evolve so fast. You will never regret having too many photos. So don’t wait for things to change, just book the session.

What do you love about Stroll?

How are you and your business involved with the community? One of my favorite things to do is to volunteer for my kid’s classroom parties and set up a cute little themed pop-up photo booths. Working with Stroll, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing families during their cover shoots. If you attended the Christmas Stroll event last year, I was the one behind the camera doing the Santa photos!

Advice you can offer to the residents regarding your industry? Book the session. Don’t wait until you are tan or ten pounds lighter or you all have

I love that Stroll creates a real sense of community connection. It highlights the many families and business in Park Ridge that make our neighborhood feel like home. There’s something so special about flipping through the pages and seeing familiar faces, learning about upcoming community events and discovering a new local small business.

KATIE’S KITCHEN A Hidden Gem in Neighboring Des Plaines

Enjoy breakfast and lunch served up right and always with a smile

Back in April, a fabulous group of Park Ridge ladies joined me to try out Katie’s Kitchen, a family-owned restaurant in Des Plaines. Established in 2008, Katie’s Kitchen quickly became a local favorite after owner Katie, fresh out of college, opened the doors with the support of her family. Thanks to their signature homemade dishes and warm hospitality, word quickly spread beyond the immediate neighborhood.

We experienced Katie’s warm hospitality just walking in the front door. After admiring the dozens of baked goodies wrapped to go on an adorable bakers hutch, Katie greeted us with a smile and quickly seated us near the cozy fireplace. The place was packed with diners at 9 am on a Tuesday morning. We observed plenty enjoying coffee, breakfast (lots of pancakes!), laughter and lively conversation, yet it was still easy to hear the ladies gathered around our long table. The wait staff had their work cut out for them and we noticed it was done with a genuine desire to help folks enjoy their time in this special place. Where do we even begin when everything tastes amazing? Truly, every dish we tried earned rave reviews from our entire group!

One clear standout was the Lemon Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes — three fluffy homemade ricotta pancakes, bursting with fresh blueberries and topped with a rich, tangy homemade lemon curd. We simply couldn’t get enough!

Other delectable breakfast entrees included Katie’s Crepes (walnut pieces filled with cannoli filling, topped with banana and Amaretto raspberry sauce), Fried Green Tomato Breakfast Sandwich, the hearty Mount Skillet (loaded with crispy bacon, portabella mushrooms, diced onions, and cheddar cheese), the fresh Veggie Breakfast Quesadilla, the crispy Potato Nest, and the flavorful Avocado Omelet. Each plate wasn’t just delicious — it was beautifully presented. We all agreed the generously portioned Cobb Salad and the Turkey Bacon Avocado Grilled Panini were showstoppers. Both dishes were outstanding and satisfying!

LEMON BLUEBERRY RICOTTA PANCAKES:

“Best Pancakes Ever! They are light, fluffy and creamy all at the same time. The combination of lemon and blueberry is perfect. Definitely a dish I will try again!”

HUEVOS RANCHEROS (BENEDICT):

“This tasty dish was a nice spin on Eggs Benedict, served with tender skirt steak instead of the traditional Canadian bacon. The ranchero sauce complemented the flavor.”

We saved the star of the show for last: the Huevos Rancheros Benedict — a dish so beloved, it was featured on WGN’s Chicago’s Best TV show after loyal customers wrote in. This savory creation layers a toasted English muffin with marinated skirt steak, avocado, two poached eggs, ranchero sauce, and melted cheddar cheese. Every bite was pure bliss. If you’re looking for a nearby spot that serves unforgettable breakfast and lunch with a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, grab your family and friends and head to Katie’s Kitchen. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did. Katie knows how breakfast and lunch is done!

SUMMER STROLLING TIME

Strolling our lovely streets

Always brings a special treat

The petrichor fragrance in the air

After rain has fallen there

Beautiful flowers everywhere

But most surprising to me

Is making a new discovery

That happened just the other day

Seeing a bungalow as an art display

An inviting Alfonso Iannelli Sprite

Appeared in the early morning light

The theme that Sprite does tell

Decorated the whole home as well

His cubic and geometric displays

Are shown by this homeowner in every way

The walls and windows all seem to say

Enjoy my art walking by me today

Everything about this lovely place

Puts a big smile on every face

So enjoy your walks around town

You will be surprised by what you found

Recognizing 100 Years of Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge

Century of service, leadership and dedication

For decades Kiwanis was known for peanuts, pancakes, and spaghetti dinners and has evolved to become so much more! Kiwanis of Park Ridge is proud to celebrate its 100th Anniversary, marking a century of service, leadership, and dedication to improving the lives of children and families!

Kiwanis has supported generations of children through initiatives like the School District 64 Holiday Food Drive, High School District 207 Teen Mental Health project, community clean ups, food pantry support, and leadership development through Maine South High School Key Club and M-NASR Aktion Club.

Kiwanians live by the Golden Rule and model good citizenship to instill values of respect, kindness, and service to others. The club also proudly ensures that our country’s flag is on display for every national holiday, distributes

thousands of mini flags to children and Veterans each Memorial Day, and hosts an Annual 4th of July Kiddie Parade in Hodges Park. The Club’s Annual Pancake Breakfast and involvement in other community-wide events like National Night Out, Stroll Park Ridge Back to School Bash, Farmer’s Market, Park Ridge Christmas Stroll and Taste of Park Ridge provide added opportunities to support family values and neighborly fun across generations.

The last century represents countless hours of volunteerism, funding support, and community impact far surpassing the vision of the club’s founding fathers. The Kiwanis motto, “Kids First” stems from an unwavering passion to help build a community where kids feel safe, confident, and cared for. Since its founding in 1925, club members have dedicated time and talent to build a stronger, more connected

“As we celebrate 100 years of impact, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and recommit ourselves to the work that lies ahead. Thank you for your support!”

PETER KROL MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING Teeing off for Mental Health

Tell us about your organization. NAMI CCNS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. Serving the northern suburbs of Chicago, the organization offers free education, support, and advocacy programs for people living with mental health conditions and their families. It provides vital resources, peer-led classes, support groups, and community outreach. NAMI CCNS believes that hope, recovery, and resilience are possible. Together, we can build a community of understanding and support for all those impacted by mental illness.

How long have you been doing this and tell us how it started? On September 7, 2024, the Krol Family hosted a memorial golf outing to honor the life of Peter Krol, 41, who passed away unexpectedly in January 2024. Pete will be remembered for his unending love, dedication, and generosity towards everyone and anyone who was lucky enough to know him. Pete had many lifelong friendships from Maine South High School and with the help and generosity of Pete’s family, friends, and the Park Ridge community, the event raised over $12,000 for NAMI Cook County North Suburban (NAMI CCNS). Due to the overwhelming success and response to the event, the 2nd Annual Peter Krol Memorial Golf Outing will be hosted at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course with a family-friendly reception at The Fairways on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

Why is it so important to our community? According to NAMI, 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. Stigma and silence still exist around these conditions. Our goal aligns with NAMI’s mission: to ensure that no one struggles alone.

Is there a way that others can get involved or support your organization? Visit https://www.namiccns.org/ peter-krol-memorial-golf-outing/ or email forePETESsake321@ gmail.com for more information about supporting this event.

DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW… the Park Ridge Historical Society is hosting an exhibit of Park Ridge schools, old and new, this summer?

The earliest Park Ridge school was likely Pennoyer School, built at Higgins and Canfield in 1841, founded by a family that came from New England, settling in the area now called Norridge. The Grant Place School, constructed in uptown Park Ridge about 1870, served Park Ridge until 1893 when the new Central School was opened on the grounds of the present Library. When Central School burned in 1930, several schools were built: Roosevelt, Field and Lincoln. Franklin was built in 1956. Other D64 schools are Washington, Carpenter and Jefferson.

Over the years, some schools have come and gone, including the Park Ridge Military Academy, Sanford E Merrill, Madison, Edison and the first Emerson building. Some buildings were repurposed (Madison has become a Park District Facility); others were demolished. Oakton School is now home of the Jeanine Schultz Memorial School.

Maine Township High School was built on Thacker in about 1902 and was replaced in 1930 by Maine East on Potter. As the area high school population grew, Maine South, Maine North (now closed) and Maine West were constructed.

The Park Ridge School for Girls which moved from Evanston in 1908 is now known as Prospect Park/ HQ for the Park District. Religious communities also built schools in Park Ridge: St. Paul of the Cross (1925) and Mary, Seat of Wisdom (1957), St Andrew’s Lutheran School (1911, constructing a new building in 1930).

Visit the History Center at Prospect Park, 721 N Prospect, on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 11 to 1 pm. Stroll Park Ridge is proud to partner and support the Society’s mission to collect, preserve and share the history of our town.

Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge BELLS

I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE a story that began 100 years ago. I attended my first Park Ridge Kiwanis Club meeting in the Spring of 1979. The meeting started and ended with the President striking a 6 inch BRASS BELL with a wooden gavel. The BELL was mounted on a walnut base with many brass plaques containing the names of club presidents going back to 1925. Even though relatively new to Park Ridge, I was “hooked” by the bell and knew than that I had to join Kiwanis. Kiwanis met weekly at noon and I began to attend on a regular basis. There were approximately 70 members, although all did not attend every week.

Because several of us found it difficult to attend as often as we would like because of work commitments, etc, I suggested we meet in the morning. I was

told that we could start a morning Kiwanis Club with 25 members signing the charter. With a little effort from several members, we achieved that goal and chartered the Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge-Morning on Dec 7, 1980. The BELL for the new morning club was donated by George Scharringhausen, JR, and was mounted on a walnut base made by Kiwanis Past-President Russ Miller. (George Scharringhausen, SR was a charter member of the original Kiwanis Club and donated their BELL in 1925.)

Park Ridge now had two Kiwanis clubs. In 2020 the noon club had only 15 members and was absorbed into the morning club, known today as the Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge. A dilemma -what should be done with TWO BELLS, one with 65 years of Park

Ridge history, and one with 40 years of Park Ridge history? My response was to build a large enough base to accommodate all the plaques with the two BELLS mounted on top. The new base is large enough to create a “time capsule” with Kiwanis news, photos, and other memorabilia. The bottom of the base contains a notice that if in the future Park Ridge no longer has a Kiwanis club, the BELLS are to be donated to the Park Ridge Historical Society. This is an artifact that belongs to the entire community.

The BELLS will be on display at the Park Ridge Public Library all month long in June.
