“Based on my experiences at different institutions across the country, the level of care and emphasis on relationship building exhibited by the Residence Life professional staff sets UWL apart. The staff invest their time and energy in the students, in hopes students will find their passions, purpose and people at UWL.” Rachel Ross, UWL Hall Director WWW.UWLAX.EDU/RESLIFE 3

RELATIONSHIP/ COMMUNITY FOCUS Community is at the heart of living in the UWL residence halls. The lifelong friendships and relationships begin here and inspire cherished memories. UWL students commonly identify the sense of belonging they experienced as members of their cube or floor. As residence life staff, we believe it is our mission to foster intentional, positive communities that not only contribute positively to students' social connections at college, but also empower them as future members of society to become more selfaware and sensitive to those around them. The Six I’s of Community Development are the goals we strive to achieve in each of our living communities.

4 WWW.UWLAX.EDU/RESLIFE

SIX I’s OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (adapted from Schroeder and Minor, 1993)

INCLUSION: Community members have and maintain a sense of belonging, feel safe, and include others within/ into the community. INTRODUCTION: New members are welcomed to the community. Community stories, traditions, historical standards, expectations, and norms are shared. INTERACTIONS: A wide variety of activities frequently take place which foster new and/or strengthen pre-existing relationships in the community. INVOLVEMENT: Members begin to see they can have an impact on each other and that their individual actions can affect the community. INVESTMENT: Effective conflict resolution techniques for community concerns are identified and used. INFLUENCE: Community members want to have control of, or at least input into, things that affect their community. Schroeder, C. C. (1993) Creating residence life programs with student development goals. In R. B. Winston Jr., S. Anchors, & Associates (Eds.), Student housing and residential life

HIGHLY-RATED STUDENT STAFF

what sets us apart …

Students consistently provide extremely positive feedback regarding our student staff. These undergraduate staff members create close communities among their 32 residents on average living on their floors. They encourage positive community living standards while working to make sure everyone feels welcome and at home.

Staff strive to form relationships with every student in their communities. They understand how important student connections are and work to promote social opportunities between neighbors in their residence hall.

“My RA is amazing. [...] When he is available he will take all the time needed to give you advice. He is constantly talking and joking with the residents, but we still look up to him as a leader.” “She has really helped me start to adjust to college and make a smooth transition. She truly has had an impact on my life and is a role model in every way.” “He is quite possibly the coolest RA there could be, he does everything by the code, yet still relates to us on a friendship-type level. He's a very genuine guy, and I consider him a friend.”

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES THE EMBASSY: YOUR VOICE, YOUR INTEREST, YOUR WAY The Student Embassy is a student organization that offers opportunities for all on campus residents to pursue their interests with other residents. The Embassy is the perfect place to make your voice heard regarding on campus life. You can share your thoughts or be a part of change through open forums or through online forums. The Embassy also offers opportunities for residents to attend conferences all across the country.

“Through the Student Embassy Links program, I can start a group around any interest I have, meet other students who share the same interests, and receive funding for it — all before I step on campus. It is also the voice for residents. They will represent any concern you have with living on campus. It is the best informal way to get connected and have fun on campus.” Mattie Krause, UWL Sophomore

SPECIALIZED LIVING ENVIRONMENTS SANFORD TRANSFER STUDENT COMMUNITY We recognize the unique position of our UWL transfer students — they have invaluable college experience, yet they are new to UWL. The Sanford Transfer Student Community is designed with one simple idea in mind — to bring together residents with invaluable and similar experiences. Not surprising the idea for the community came from none other but our transfer students!

OUTDOOR RECREATION COMMUNITY The Outdoor Recreation Community in Eagle Hall is designed for students who have a passion and an interest for outdoor activities and the environment. They must be willing to be challenged, have a desire to gain skills outside of the classroom, and participate in extracurricular activities and events relating to the outdoors.

MULTICULTURAL VALIDATION PROGRAM (MVP) The Multicultural Validation Program (MVP) is a collaborative scholarship program with the Office of Residence Life and the Office of Multicultural Student Services to increase persistence of multicultural students on campus. The students reside in Drake Hall and have regular meetings with their peer mentors and professional advisors. All individuals participating in MVP (mentors and first year students) uphold a GPA requirement, attend monthly MVP social/ development events, and are involved in at least one multicultural student organization on campus.

"MVP was made to help students WITHOUT multicultural backgrounds learn, grow, accept, and develop new mindsets about the world and the unique people in it through MVP scholars. I was offered a handful of other scholarships from many competitive schools, but MVP was the most unique and catered the most to my real concerns, and it was the reason why I chose to attend UWL.” Amber West, UWL sophomore and MVP mentor

CHOOSING WHERE TO LIVE

We want you to choose the best option for yourself as to where you wish to live after your first year. We recognize the value of on-campus housing; however, we do not require students entering their second year and beyond to live on campus because of space restraints.

ADVANTAGES OF ON-CAMPUS LIVING » Location » Billing convenience » Contract length: Contract matches the academic calendar. You can also change your mind up until May 1st! »A cademic Success: Students living on campus tend to perform better academically » Staff support 24/7 »C onnecting with students for a sense of belonging

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES » RENTING OPTIONS & RESOURCES » GUIDE FOR LIVING OFF-CAMPUS 14 WWW.UWLAX.EDU/RESLIFE

CONSIDERATIONS FOR OFF-CAMPUS LIVING… » Early lease signing: Don’t be rushed into an agreement out of fear of not getting a great place. Know that signing a lease too early locks you in and can result in roommate choice regret and other possible limitations. » Consider all associated costs as you determine what you can afford when renting. » A lease is a legally binding contract. Take your time reviewing it before signing. » Talk to others who have rented from the landlord about their experiences. » Talk with your potential roommates about what you wish for in your living experience.

APPLYING FOR HOUSING Apply as soon as you can. Priority for your assignment is based on the date you complete the housing contract and application. Typically, late housing applicants will be accommodated in temporary extended housing spaces.

Once you have been accepted to UWL and paid your enrollment deposit, you will be encouraged to sign up for student housing. The application process is simple, and guides you step by step. As part of your application you will be asked to pay a housing deposit (anticipated to be $150). After completing your housing contract and application, you can select roommates based on similar interests and lifestyles. This step can be completed up until May and does not affect your housing priority, giving you time to make decisions. We will select a roommate for you if you prefer not to choose your own.
