Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto

Barcellona P.G. is the city where the Italian school IIS Medi is located and where most of us were hosted during the Italian mobility. We visited the Linguistic and Scientific Lyceums, where we could see how Italian students prepare for their exams. The town has a clean city centre with the Cathedral of San Sebastiano in the middle. The Duomo is a very impressive building. We also visited the Orange Seed statue, which is the symbol of Barcellona P.G. Our meeting point was at the War Memorial, which commemorates the victims of WW2. We also visited the impressive theatre, where we sang a song on the stage. The city has got plenty of pleasant cafés and pastry shops. We really enjoyed ourselves drinking coffee and granita with brioche. There is a nice beach, which is a bit far from the centre, but it is worth the walk. All in all, the city has a nice atmosphere and we had a lot of fun.

Taormina Taormina is a town located on the east coast of Sicily. Its history dates back to 734 when Ancient Greece established its first colony in Sicily. Later, after the Italian unification, Taormina began to attract tourists from northern Europe, and it became well known as a welcoming haven for gas men and artists. The present town of Taormina occupies the ancient site, on a hill which forms the last projecting point of the mountain ridge that extends along the coast from Cape Pelorus to this point. The Ancient theatre of Taormina is built for the most part of brick and therefore is probably of Roman date. Just south of Taormina is the Isola Bella, a nature reserve. The town of Taormina is perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian sea. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, it has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants and antique shops. We had an amazing experience in Taormina, where we learned a lot about the Ancient Greek culture and tried different kinds of local desserts.

Vulcano Visit a beautiful place called Volcano Island. We were there with our teachers. You can travel there by hydrofoil from Milazzo. Travelling by a hydrofoil is such a cool experience. On the island, you can walk on the biggest volcano of the island - Vulcano, but sometimes it is closed. When Vulcano is active, it is dangerous. There is also a smaller volcano on this island - Vulcanello. On your way there you need to go through some kind of wild nature because there isn't any road. Along the road, there are a lot of cactuses and plenty of other exotic flowers. When you arrived at the top of this small volcano, there are the prettiest views. Especially at sunset time, you can watch the sunset from the top of the hill. On the way, you can visit a black beach with sand of volcanic origin. The natural beauty and the wild nature is fantastic. Fun fact: The international word volcano comes from the name of this island and its volcano - Vulcano.

Tindari Tindari is a town of Greek origin on the northern coast of Sicily, west of Messina and east of Patti and best known for the substantial church known as the Tindari Sanctuary and the archaeological site of the ancient city. Tindari has wonderful views of the Aeolian Islands. The original city was built from the 4th century BC and survived until the 8th century, although it suffered a great deal when part of the cliff collapsed and some of the town fell into the sea in the 1st century, and again when an earthquake hit the region in the 4th century.

Throughout its history Tindari has been Greek, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Arab and various monuments remain from these times but the most visited site here is the Tindari Sanctuary which can be seen balancing on the edge of the cliff as you drive along the Palermo-Messina motorway, and is on the edge of the main square in the town. Inside the sanctuary you can see the statue of the "Black Madonna" a wooden sculpture perhaps from Syria or Egypt, where it was carved around the 12th century. It has various legends relating to its arrival in Tindari but it now sits behind the altar along with the inscription "black am I but beautiful" and is the cause of the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna being a major site of pilgrimage The sanctuary is situated at the eastern end of the promontory, overlooking the sea at the ancient acropolis, where a small church was built on the ruins of the abandoned town. The church was destroyed in 1544 by Algerian pirates, then rebuilt between 1552 and 1598. The sanctuary was more recently rebuilt again in the 1960s. Despite being a new church, the sanctuary is very impressive with painted walls and ceilings, marble columns and brightly coloured stained glass windows as well as the altar containing the Black Madonna.

Ozora

Ozora is a village in Tolna, Hungary. It has been notable since the Middle Ages, when Pipo of Ozora built a castle at this site by permission of Sigismund of Hungary in 1416. Artúr Görgei won an important victory in this area at the Battle of Ozora during the 1848 Revolution. The castle was very impressive. It was very enjoyable When they taught us to traditional Hungarian dances. I like so much this trip to Ozora. As our bus arrives at Ozora and we saw the castle, we felt that this will be an unforgettable experience. When the gates opened and we stepped in the inside yard and looked around, we felt that we travelled with a time machine which took us back to the history. When we entered the first room the feeling of being in the past rose. In every room the guide told us some stories and the purpose of every room. We were really impressed by the castle- it was majestic. In the end we had an activity connected with dances. When the two women came into the hall and showed us the renaissance dances and we were like “okay it is not that hard” but then when the last dances were shown and we were supposed to dance we could not remember the steps. But we were laughing and having so much fun. It was an unforgettable and an irreplaceable experience.

Tapolca The origin of Tapolca is disputed, originating either from the Hungarian Tapolcza, meaning "high place", or from the Slavic Toplica/Teplica meaning "hot springs". It was also known as Turul or Turultapolca at some points in the Middle Ages. In the heart of the town 20 meters below we find a spectacular 3 km long lake cave system which was discovered in 1903 during a well digging. Ten years after it’s discovery, in 1912, parts of the cave was opened to the public. Arriving in the city, we were initially impressed by the lake with the wonderful picturesque buildings that surround it. The announcement from the hosting team that our descent under the ground into the cave with the water springs is imminent, praised our imagination and ignited our anticipation. A unique experience followed, as we found ourselves 20 meters below the ground in a speleological network with turquoise waters in small lakes, culminating in our rowing in one of them through a narrow tunnel with a metal boat and oars. The experience was so impressive that some of us performed the route twice !!! None of us will forget such a revealing-didactic-fantastic experience.

Tihany is a village on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. Tihany lies on the peninsula of the same name. This area is known mainly for lavender fields, but due to the winter we did not have the opportunity to see them. On warm summer days, people from all over Hungary go swimming in the lake. Balaton is the "sea" of Hungary. We visited a restaurant, which was called ECHO. When you screamed something in one place in front of the restaurant it echoed back - from this is the name of the restaurant. They found the echo in the 18th century and it's one of the big things in Tihany. There were poems written for this echo, like by Mihaly Csokonai Vitez and Mihály Vorosmarty, but the most famous is by János Garay, summing up the legend of the place. The echo has since abated, due to changes in the landscape. We went there for a small walk, had a coffee or something else in the restaurant and went to Tapolca. It was a small trip around the city, because the weather wasn't really good.. But the city is very beautiful .

Balaton

Lake Balaton, also known as the Hungarian Sea, is the largest lake in Central Europe. Is located in the counties of Somogy, Veszprém and Zala in the Danube Plain. The name comes from the Slavic term for mud "blato". Its area is almost 600 km², 78 km long and reaches a maximum width of 12 km. We had the opportunity to see the lake from multiple angles. First we walked along the shore in Siofok and then we saw Balaton from above in Tihany (see the previous article). Both trips were worth it and each was something special. I think the Hungarians can be proud of that. I will definitely come here soon in the warmer months, when it will have a completely different atmosphere!!!

Rethymno Rethymno is a beautiful city in Greece on the north coast of Crete. It is also a very popular tourist destination due to its many attractions. Rethymno also has a history going back until the Minoan times, when it was founded. The city has a population of 30.000 inhabitants. When we first arrived in Rethymno, we went sightseeing. We visited a Turkish mosque and minaret, and before that we saw a famous theatre, called Erofili. The view of the city was amazing from there. After the sightseeing, the students and the teachers got some free time to look around on their own. We could buy souvenirs and eat something. The meeting point was the port of Rethymno. That is where the bus was waiting for us. Overall I can say that the city is wonderful and the architecture is fascinating.

Knossos The palace of Knossos is a UNESCO heritage site in Heraklion, Crete. It was built by the Minoans circa 4000 years ago. It bears witness to the immense skill and technological advancement of the Minoan civilization. The atmosphere there is stunning and compels one to think about the lives of people who are long gone. The palace used to have many stories, which were held up by pillars partially made out of trees. The Minoan civilization placed emphasis on building large palaces, which could be inhabited by as many as 20 thousand people. On the palace walls, one can see beautifully preserved frescoes depicting traditional Minoan clothing among them women with bare breasts and men in skirts. The bull was very important to the Minoans, and many depictions of this animal can be seen throughout the palace.

Archanes is an old beautiful settlement in the Heraklion region. It is famous for its Cretan architecture. Most houses have been restored and painted in bouncy colours. All this makes the walk extremely pleasant.

Archanes

We personally were impressed by the architecture which is completely different from the Bulgarian one and that’s why we find it quite interesting. When we were there we had a lovely walk in nature. We were excited by the biodiversity of the region and the gorgeous view of the mountains in the distance. We had some free time for lunch and go shopping. We liked the food and the time with our new friends from the other countries. We had fun and we were very happy to communicate with them. We will keep the best memories forever.

Prohodna Cave Prohodna is a cave located in north central Bulgaria, in the Iskar Gorge near the village of Karlukovo, in the Lovech Province. Prohodna is most notable for the two equal-sized holes in the ceiling of its middle chamber, known as God's eyes. The two holes, formed through erosion, let in light into the cave. Prohodna is the best known attraction in the Karlukovo Gorge, one of the largest karst regions in Bulgaria. Prohodna is 262 metres long, which makes it the longest cave passage in Bulgaria. The cave has two entrances which lie opposite one another, known respectively as the Small Entrance and the Big Entrance. The former is 35 metres high and the latter reaches 42.5 or 45 metres. The cave owes its name, which literally means Thoroughfare Cave or Passage Cave, to this feature. The size of the Big Entrance of Prohodna makes it suitable for bungee jumping and it is among the popular spots in Bulgaria for that activity. There are traces of prehistoric habitation in the Prohodna cave, which testify that humans lived in the cave during the Neolithic period. Arriving in the place where the cave is situated, we had to walk along a delightful path surrounded by nature. Stunning was also the landscape below, crossed by a picturesque river. Entering the cave, we were initially impressed by the immense space around us. It was a really unique experience, being inside such a spacious and peculiar place, and it was a lot of fun climbing and scrambling all over the cave. The most beautiful part about the trip was, without a doubt, rewatching our tour through drone footage during the last day. I really enjoyed this fascinating experience and I hope I’ll be able to visit it again with my family in the near future.

Veliko Tarnovo It is often called the "City of the Tsars". Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and it is famously known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire It attracts many tourists with its unique architecture. The old part of the town is situated on three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora, rising in the middle of the meanders of the Yantra. On Tsarevets are the palaces of the Bulgarian emperors and the Patriarchate, the Patriarchal Cathedral, and also several administrative and residential buildings surrounded by thick walls. In Veliko Tarnovo we enjoyed the walk in Gurko Street. On our walk we admired a variety of picturesque buildings. The experience was enhanced with beautiful views of the Yantra river. Another highlight of our trip to Veliko Tarnovo was the visit of the monument called Mother Bulgaria War Memorial, located in the very heart of the city. The monument makes one contemplate the bravery of the Bulgarians who fought in a number of big wars. The garden surrounding this memorial is another picturesque spot in Veliko Tarnovo. We enjoyed our stay here very much.

Troyan Troyan is a town remembering the name of Roman Emperor Trajan, in Lovech Province in central Bulgaria with a population of 21,997 inhabitants, as of December 2009. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Troyan Municipality. The town is about 162 kilometres away from the country's capital Sofia. The river of Beli Osam passes through the heart of the town. The 2011 Census indicates that the population of the Trojan was 21.194 inhabitants. Troyan was named a town in 1868, when it developed as a craft centre for the region. After the liberation it grows slowly. A spark in the town's growth was the creation of a small water electrical plant and textile factories. In 1948, the town was connected to the railway Lovech – Levski – Svishtov. Later in time factories producing electrical motors, electrotechnical products, building machines, wool and furniture developed in the town. The Troyan region is home to the cultural and historical site of the Troyan Monastery. August 15 is the day of the Monastery's Patron Saint, when thousands of people from the country gather to celebrate and see a unique icon of Mary. The icon is unique in that Mary has three hands made of silver. The origins of the icon are unknown but there are many stories, some of which involve miracles. The town is famous for its traditional pottery, probably developed partly as a result of the qualities of the local clay soil. Pottery was a main source of income for the local craftsmen during the Bulgarian Renaissance age. Now handmade pottery items are sold as souvenirs to tourists. Fine examples of traditional pottery can be seen in the town's museum, across from the municipal building.

Etar On our second day in Bulgaria, we took a visit to a special and famous open-air museum in Etar. With the help of a kind tour guide lady, we could truly experience its uniqueness and everybody got to educate themselves about traditional Bulgarian customs and craftsmanship. We looked around a lot as we were all so amazed by the types of buildings, such as the clock tower or the watermill. We took a lot of photos, both group and self-made to have something to remember. There are all sorts of workshops still operating in the revived building complexes, like a wood workshop, cutlery or jewellery, so everybody could buy some sort of souvenirs for themselves. I personally found a pair of silver earrings. The cats wandering around the people also enlightened our mood. The bus was full of talking about this place on our way back. It’s safe to say it had quite an effect on us, as we were all exhausted at the end of the day.

Vizovice the town of fruit spirits (and goats…) On Thursday the 12th at about 7:45 in the morning, we set sail to Vizovice. Safe to say that everyone was sleeping on the way there. Approximately an hour after our departure we arrived at Rudolf Jelinek’s spirit factory. We watched a presentation about the history and production of Slivovice (and had a little taste test). We proceeded to a museum and even had the opportunity to look over the fermenting barrels of fruit spirit. At the end of our tour we could try a little Elixir (an alcoholic drink made from 14 different herbs), and even Hruskovice (Slivovice that is made from pears instead of plums). Our last stop in Vizovice was a goat farm, where we had the opportunity to pet the goats (well, the few that actually approached us), taste goat cheese and milk. We even ate some ice cream made from goat’s milk. It was really delicious, well… up until the point where I accidentally dropped mine on the ground. Overall the visit to Vizovice was an amazing trip, and an intriguing experience.

Modra Modra is a small village located in the Zlin Region of the Czech Republic. This place has a small population but human presence around this territory dates back to 5,000 BC. There are findings from the Great Moravian period which are presented in an archaeological open-air museum with replicas of the Great Moravia period buildings. When we arrived in Modra, we got off the bus at an outdoor museum. When we entered through the gates of that museum we went back hundreds of years ago. We saw how people were living in the past, and what their houses looked like. It was interesting. In that museum, there were a lot of animals like goats, sheep, chickens, donkeys, pigs, ducks. The ducks were a bit aggressive, but it was fun. And just before leaving that place we were able to take photos with a falcon. Then we changed with the other group and we went to Modra Voda, a lake full of different kind of fish. It was amazing, because we were able to go under the water in a glass tunnel. We could see the aquatic inhabitants from a very close distance.

Kromeriz

Kromeriz is a town in the Zlin Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 28,000 inhabitants. It is known for the Kromeriz Castle with castle gardens, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town centre with the castle complex is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument reservation. The town is best known for the Baroque Kromeriz Castle with its valuable gardens. The polygonal tower of the castle is the main landmark as well as the oldest remnant of the old Bishop's Castle. The Gardens and Castle at Kromeriz were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1998. Despite several reconstructions after the war damage, the Church of Saint Maurice retained its early Gothic appearance. Bishop Bruno von Schauenburg is buried in the church. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was the oldest church in the town. The original church from the 13th century was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. The current structure was built in the late Baroque style the first half of the 18th century. It has a preserved bell tower from the 13th century. The town's main museum is Kromeriz Region Museum. There is also Karel Kryl's exposition on life and work of one of the most famous natives. In the former Bishop's Mint from 1665 is a mint exposition.

Zlin Zlin is a city located on the Drevnice river in the Zlin Region, in South-East Czech Republic. Since the 20th century it became an important industrial centre due to Tomas Bata’s shoe company which was founded in 1894. For its buildings and architecture the city is protected by law as an urban monument zone. The name Zlín could derivate either from ‘slin’ (which means ‘marl’) or from ‘zlate japko’ (‘golden apple'). After the bus stopped we found ourselves in Namesti Miru (the Peace Square) and right after lunch we went in front of the Zlin town hall where the guide briefly spoke about Zlin’s history and the way it was organised by Tomas Bata in three zones: work, housing and relax. Then we moved to Zlin’s castle, one of the few traces of the past that have survived in the city. It is a baroque building, originally used as a stronghold with an internal arcaded courtyard; nowadays is used for cultural purposes. Going to the working area we saw the building in which Bata Company was born and another important one, Bata’s Skyscraper (77.5 metres high with sixteen floors): it was the administration building of the factory, now it is headquarters of the Zlin Region. Last but not least, after seeing the historical Moskva hotel we stopped by Tomas Bata’s Memorial in which is kept Junkers F 13 aircraft in which he died in 1932. The monument is reduced to three basic materials of Zlin architecture – concrete, steel and glass which, together with the composition, express some attributes of the great entrepreneur: generosity, clarity, aspiration, optimism, simplicity and honesty.
