DOGWHISTLE IS A STRATEGIC MARKETING AND CREATIVE AGENCY SPECIALISING IN HIGH-END BRANDING, DESIGN, PHOTOGRAPHY AND ADVERTISING. Established in 2008, Dogwhistle Creative is a partnership between Greg Meek and Liz Shepherd.

GREG MEEK

CREATIVE DIRECTOR, DESIGNER, PHOTOGRAPHER, COPYWRITER AND STRATEGIST SINCE 1978.

Greg specialises in brand development, advertising, publishing, image libraries and design for tourism, events and economic development.

Greg began his career in major Sydney ad agencies and publishing houses. He freelanced throughout Sydney before moving to the Northern Rivers.

For fifteen years, Greg was a Creative Director and Director at one of Australia’s largest full-service, regional agencies before establishing Dogwhistle Creative in 2008..

He has written, designed and produced scores of publications, brochures and advertising campaigns and created brands and logos for all tiers of government and businesses large and small.

Greg has conceived, coordinated and produced award-winning campaigns for Northern Rivers Tourism and created many tourism and event campaigns.

As a photographer and creative director, Greg has conducted major photoshoots for regional councils and tourism organisations throughout the Northern Rivers and South East Queensland.

LISMORE CITY COUNCIL AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR of The North Coast Ad Agency, Greg pioneered the development of corporate and tourism branding for many local Councils, including Lismore, Clarence Valley, Richmond Valley, Scenic Rim and Ballina. EAT THE STREET IS A street food festival designed to reinvigorate the City Centre and to showcase Lismore’s eclectic café and restaurant culture and extraordinary regional cuisine.

Greg designs and produces signage, print, press, radio, television, online and social media promotions for the event. We produce funding applications, acquittals and reports and prepare award submissions. Eat the Street attracts more than 30,000 visitors annually and, in its 5 year history, has won major regional and state tourism awards.

The Lantern Parade is a ‘Signature Event’ in the regional NSW calendar and has received many accolades and awards.

DOGWHISTLE HAS CREATED and produced many campaigns and promotions for Lismore Tourism and Events – from simple social media promos to large scale multi-media campaigns.

The ‘art & food’ campaign, blended traditional and social media, print collateral and online competitions to promote a series of cultural events as well as dining and accommodation packages featuring local operators. The campaign featured a ‘passport’ loyalty component with prizes, discounts and customer rewards.

IN 2022, Dogwhistle Creative was contracted by Tourism Australia to conduct a major photography and film shoot covering much of the NSW coastline. Greg put together a team that included videographer Trevor Worden and drone and underwater photographer Craig Parry. Greg was producer, director and principal photographer for the shoots at 30 regional locations. He coordinated schedules, talent, locations and client liaison as well as producing detailed schedules and storyboards and post production.

Dogwhistle was engaged by a consortium of 13 Victorian Councils from the Goldfields region of Central Victoria to develop a brand and marketing package to help with the campaign to achieve World Heritage recognition of the areas cultural and historic value.

The project involved extensive research and stakeholder consultation, multi layered brand creative, advertising and promotional strategies and concepts, public relations, a website and trade show display.

The Guide Book suggests a colour palette, attributes and character traits that help to define the Goldfields brand values and presentation.

World Heritage Rainforests Border Ranges National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.

The Gondwana Rainforests was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1986 and extended in 1994.

World Heritage sites conserve our natural and cultural heritage and are protected for all people.

The Gondwana Rainforests of Australia includes 50 separate reserves and protects most of the major remaining rainforests in south-east Queensland and northeast New South Wales.

This World Heritage Area is of outstanding universal value with features representing significant stages in the evolutionary history of the earth and highly significant habitats of threatened species.

Some of the world’s oldest ferns and conifers are found here as well as primitive plant families with direct links to the birth and spread of flowering plants over 100 million years ago.

The World Heritage area includes the most extensive areas of subtropical rainforest in the world, large areas of warm temperate rainforest and nearly all of the Antarctic Beech cool temperate rainforest.

The area also contains examples of the Tertiary volcanic activity which created our landscapes, including

Rainforest once covered most of the ancient supercontinent, Gondwana, and it is the most ancient type of vegetation in Australia.

Few places on earth contain so many plants and animals that remain relatively unchanged from their ancestors in the fossil record.

Welcome the caldera of the Tweed Shield Volcano which is considered one of the best preserved in the world.

Other spectacular features include high waterfalls crashing into steep gorges - demonstrating the natural process of erosion which created the Great Escarpment.

Gondwana Rainforests contain some of the most important habitats for the conservation of biological diversity in the world, providing habitat for more than 200 rare and threatened plant and animal species.

Four of the five main types of rainforests found in New South Wales can be found in Border Ranges National Park.

Subtropical rainforest occurs in areas with fertile soil and high rainfall such as gullies and creek lines. This luxuriant rainforest type bursts with giant buttresses trees, Strangler Figs, palms, hanging vines and epiphytic orchids and ferns. Subtropical rainforest can be experienced at Sheepstation Creek. Levers Plateau which is difficult to access has the largest unlogged stand of subtropical rainforest in NSW.

Cool temperate rainforest thrives in the high altitude and cool, rainy environment of the caldera rim.

Here the damp forests are often bathed in mist and giant trees have thick coats of moss, birds nest ferns, liverworts and lichens.

The rainforests of Bar Mountain and Brindle Creek are splendid examples with Antarctic beech trees over 2000 years old.

Warm temperate rainforest exists in the rugged western portion of the park in high altitudes on less fertile soils. The rainforest lacks Strangler Figs, buttressed roots, palms and woody vines but is rich in ground ferns and lichens. Mt Glennie is the best example and is dominated by Crab Apple.

Dry rainforest occurs on the shallow soils of the dry northern and western slopes. Strangler Figs and large woody vines are common but buttressed roots, palms and epiphytes are rare. Levers Plateau with its large stand of hoop pine is an example of this type of rainforest.

Although rainforest covers a large area of the park, there are important stands of wet and dry sclerophyll forests. There are also a number of shrub-dominated heath

like communities on exposed rocky knolls and cliffs.

Wilderness Ninety six percent of Border Ranges National Park is managed as wilderness, including Lost World, Warrazambil and Levers wilderness areas.

These wilderness areas contain deep ravines, remote ridges and hidden waterfalls.

in Australia and protect many plant and animal species listed as endangered. Rainforest wilderness is now rare in NSW as it has been prized for its timber and fertile soils.

The wilderness offers wonderful opportunities for self-reliant bushwalking. We recommend wilderness walkers adopt minimal impact codes and plan your trip carefully to help protect these important wild areas.

The ancient volcanic caldera In the ancient past Australia was part of the giant southern land mass called Gondwana.

This supercontinent fractured and Australia gradually drifted northwards. As it passed over one of the earth’s ‘hot spots’ eastern Australia erupted in volcanoes.

In this area the landscape was dominated by the twin shield volcanoes of Wollumbin and Focal Peak to the west. The Focal Peak volcano erupted about 24 million years ago slightly north-west of the present-day Mount Barney. Several million years later the Wollumbin volcano overlapped the eastern side of the Focal Peak shield. The Border Ranges are born of these two ancient volcanoes.

The Border Ranges then is built from layers of basalt and rhyolite that flowed from the main volcanic vents. The volcanoes cooled and over time erosion carved away the softer basalt leaving resistant rhyolite peaks, striking vertical cliffs and the deep caldera that we see today.

The eastern section includes the least eroded part of the Tweed

The western section of the Border Ranges includes remnants of Focal

shield. Here cliffs have sheared away at weak points where the rock has been undercut by the erosion of soft basalt.

The result is a dramatic escarpment that rims one of the largest calderas of its type in the world. Lookouts provide views of the eroded layers and the volcano’s exposed core – Wollumbin as it now stands.

PARK MANAGEMENT Fire management Fire was part of the Australian environment well before humans arrived.

Fire has played a critical and continuing role in the evolution of Australia’s plants and animals. The echoes of fires long past are evident in the mosaic of forest types we see today. Even rainforest has been shaped over millennia by a history of fire.

Controlling the damaging impacts of fire while also maintaining the ecosystem role of fire is an important challenge for park managers.

Research in the park is targeted at understanding the particular needs of wildlife such as the endangered Hastings River Mouse. Increasingly fire

is being used to maintain the habitat of endangered species and to control weeds.

Fire trail maintenance and hazard reduction fires are also conducted to help limit the impact of damaging wildfires.

Pest and Weed Control

The parks fertile soils and high rainfall make it particularly vulnerable to weed invasion. Often brought in by birds or by wind, weeds have the potential to impact on many of the parks important values.

Border Ranges National Park (31 860 ha) on the rim of an ancient volcano adjoins Lamington National Park in Queensland. It stretches 85km from east to west along the NSW-Qld border. The Border Ranges National Park forms part of the Tweed (Wollumbin) shield volcano – the largest caldera in the southern hemisphere.

Border Ranges National Park appeals to a wide range of visitors keen to appreciate its spectacular views, inspiring rainforests, crystal creeks and unique wildlife.

The luxuriant rainforests along the Tweed Range and the remote Levers Plateau in the western portion of the park, are some of the best in the world. The Tweed Range Scenic Drive, as well as a series of walking tracks and lookouts provide visitors the opportunity to experience these values firsthand.

The outstanding diversity of these forests has seen the region recognized as a biodiversity hotspot.

Of the thousands of different plant families found in Australia, half are found in rainforests. The region has the highest concentration of frog,

snake, bird and mammal species in Australia.

The park includes a variety of rainforest types, wet sclerophyll forests dominated by Brushbox and Flooded Gum and small areas of grassy woodland and mallee heath on the most exposed ridges.

Buttressed Booyong forests, Strangler Figs, Bangalow Palms, Red Cedar, Rosewood, and giant Hoop Pines are just some of the diverse vegetation within the park. Antarctic Beech trees, some as old as 2000 years, are found on the highest and coolest parts of the range.

Over 170 bird species have been identified in the park, many of which are rare or threatened. Some of the resident birds include the Paradise Riflebird, Satin Bowerbird and Regent Bowerbird, Green Catbird, Rufous Scrub-Bird, Albert’s Lyrebird, Marbled Frogmouth, Noisy Pitta, Wompoo Fruit-Dove and Rose-crowned Fruitdove. The Powerful Owl, Sooty Owl and Peregrine Falcon also inhabit these forests.

The Border Ranges are one of Australia’s most important environments for amphibians. The

rare Pouched Frog (Assa darlingtoni) or Hip-pocket Frog, is perhaps the most unusual of these. The male of this species raises their tadpoles in special pockets on their flanks.

Loveridge’s Frog (Philoria loveridgei) is another rare and primitive species found in the headwaters of small streams where ground-water is continuously present.

The park is an important centre for many rare mammal species including the Hastings River Mouse, Eastern Chestnut Mouse and Spotted-tailed Quoll. Rainforest specialist such as the

Red-legged Pademelon, Long-nosed Potoroo and Golden-tipped Bat also call these forests home.

More than 96% of the park is declared as wilderness. Wilderness is where we find peace and solitude away from the pressures of modern living. Many plant and animal populations will survive only if we preserve wilderness.

Species in the spotlight Albert’s Lyrebird The Border Ranges is an important stronghold for a unique species of rainforest lyrebird. Albert’s Lyrebird (Menura alberti) is a large, long tailed, ground dwelling bird with rich chestnutbrown plumage. Males and females are alike except for the shape of the tail.

The male has a more spectacular tail while the tail of the female is shorter and simpler. Albert’s Lyrebird can be distinguished from the more common Superb Lyrebird by its richer brown plumage and, in males, less elaborate

outer tail or ‘lyre’ feathers. Although in the rainforests of the Border Ranges you can be confident that any lyrebird seen will be an “Albert’s”.

Albert’s Lyrebird is endemic to Australia and has one of the smallest distributional ranges of any bird on the continent. It is confined to a small region around the border of far south-east Queensland and far northeast NSW. Rainforest clearing in the previous century has likely reduced and fragmented their former range.

Albert’s Lyrebird usually occurs singly or in pairs, or rarely in groups of three.

It is sedentary and remains in the same

general area year-round.

Albert’s Lyrebird usually feeds on the ground, particularly in areas with deep moist leaf litter and fallen logs. When foraging on the ground they scratch among debris, turn over leaves and dig into soil in search of invertebrate prey.

Albert’s Lyrebird is described as very wary and difficult to approach; as a result, they are more often heard than seen. Bar Mountain and the Tweed Range Scenic Drive are perhaps the best locations to see or hear Albert’s Lyrebird with ideal habitat and many recent records.

A significant portion of management effort is aimed at reducing the impact and spread of weeds to protect these important native habitats.

Brushbox

Lophostemon confertus From the Myrtaceae family (that includes eucalypts), the Brushbox is a large to very large tree often found on the edge of rainforests. Its natural range is NE New South Wales and coastal Queensland.

Visitor needs Maintaining roads, walking tracks and visitor areas is an important part of managing a national park. Making sure that they are accessible, and safe, while also protecting important natural values.

The Border Ranges provides many unique visitor attractions that will continue to be available for future generations to experience and enjoy.
