PLATFORM-DOC & FESTIVAL-DOC: A CASE STUDY The market for online docs is growing. With short doc platforms emerging from new and established media players, it’s clear that they are becoming more and more popular. But what is different about producing a doc for a platform like the Guardian or the New York Times rather than a ‘typical film festival documentary’? This case study will compare two Ukrainian documentaries sharing the same content and protagonist, but each produced with a different target in mind: Home Match (short platform doc) and Home Games (feature-length festival doc). What are the differences and similarities between their narratives, storytelling techniques, and the process of production? Participants: director Alisa Kovalenko and producer Stephane Siohan (East Roads Films). Moderator: Daniel Abma (DOK Leipzig). The event is part of the GLOBAL SHORT DOCS FORUM.

DISCUSSION ’CURE FOR AGEING. THE NEW DIGITAL BODY FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE‘ The digital age has opened boundless possibilities, but at the same time it presents new challenges both for artists and for archive and museum managers. Is the age of analogue cinema, ledgers and inventory cards definitely behind us? How do contemporary filmmakers reflect on the transition from analogue to digital formats? What are the advantages and risks of the process of total digitisation? What would the ideal archive of the future look like?

DISCUSSION ‘PUBLIC SPACES: FREE ACCESS?’ The development of public space in Ukraine involves rethinking the Soviet heritage. In Soviet times, art was fully in service of the state ideology and was supposed to be accessible to a wide audience, so cinemas and houses of culture appeared in almost every town or village. Today, these cultural facilities are being destroyed and turned into stores or churches, or just crumbe from neglect. Is it possible to transform these ‘quasi-public spaces’ inherited from Soviet times into contemporary culture and art centres?

Vladyslav Pioro, public figure in the field of museum management; Kateryna Yakovlenko, journalist, researcher at the PinchukArtCentre Research Platform; Oleksandr Makhanets, coordinator of the City Media Archive at the Urban History Centre (Lviv); Anna Onufrienko, film researcher at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre.

Nastia Ponomariova, architect, urbanist; Artur Aroyan, architect, photographer, researcher into local cultures; Polina Kelm, filmmaker, activist; Mykola Vohnyk, cycling culture enthusiast. Moderator: Yevhenia Moliar, art critic, member of the DE NE DE initiative.

Discussion ‘Does Netflix Affect the Language of Cinema?’ VOD platforms are now not just popular, and they don’t just receive major awards in the film industry. They have rewired the market, and are beginning to affect the form of film itself. Documentary films are made by Netflix and the Guardian, digital distribution is growing, and platforms dictate their own rules to directors and producers. What are these rules, and how has the way we watch films changed? How much cinema is actually still left in the new digital product?

Kenan Aliev, executive editor of Current Time international news network; Flora Gregory, project director of the Global Short Docs Forum; Roman Stepanovych, executive producer and co-founder of the Zaborona project; Lejla Dedić, programme producer, acquisitions manager at Al-Jazeera Balkans. Moderator: Daria Badior, film critic.

Roundtable on Sound in Documentary Film Music Does the reality of documentary film need music or sound design as an instrument to affect the audience? Is music manipulative, or is it a necessary narrative element of films? This roundtable will focus on the ethical aspects of soundtracks for nonfiction films, but also on some practical advice. For example, how to make music for documentaries, how to use existing soundtracks without breaking copyright laws, and what to take into account while working on documentary sound recording.

Anton Dehtiariov, composer, musician, member of the Ptakh Jung duo; Ivan Kozlenko, art manager, founder of the Mute Nights Festival of Silent Film and Contemporary Music; Vladyslav Mitsovskyi, producer, music manager; Serhiy Stepanskyi, sound designer. Moderator: Maryna Stepanska, filmmaker.

How to master and systematise the huge volumes of footage and stick to the truth of life? What is special about working with debutant directors, and how to tie real-life and screen time together?
