Canzon Noni Toni GIOVANNI
GABRIELI
Born 1557, Venice
Died August 12, 1612, Venice
Canzon noni toni was composed by the Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli. He is known for composing music that involved spatial separation of performers, with two or more instrumental groups simultaneously playing from different locations within the performance space. This canzon, or lyrical song, will be performed by eight brass players split into two choruses, where you will be able to enjoy the call-and-response of each brass choir.
The Golden Year GIOVANNI GABRIELI
Born January 25, 1921, New York
Died September 17, 2005, Miami
The Golden Year was commissioned by the Yokohama Kounan Junior High School Band of Japan, in honor of the 50-year anniversary of the founding of the school. The piece debuted in 1997, under the direction of the composer, as part of the commemorative anniversary program. The piece opens with a majestic theme in the brass to signify the ceremony itself. The second theme, a long lyrical line set over a highly charged rhythmic accompaniment, depicts the bustle and excitement of a celebration.
Shenandoah FRANK TICHELI
Born January 21, 1958, Los Angeles
Frank Tichelli’s setting of Shenandoah was inspired by the freedom and beauty of the folk melody. The Shenandoah valley and the Shenandoah river are located in Virginia. The naming of the Shenandoah valley and river may have come from the Cherokee, naming it after an Iroquois Chief or by the Senedo Indians of Virginia Valley– to them Shenandoah means “Daughter of the Moon.” The piece is also inspired by the river’s life-affirming timeless energy. The work’s mood ranges from quite reflection, through growing optimism, to profound exaltation.
The Magnificent Seven ELMER BERNSTEIN
Born April 4, 1922, New York Died August 18, 2004, Ojai, CA
The American Western, The Magnificent Seven, was released in 1960. It was a reimagining of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. A classic tale of good vs. evil, the main theme played throughout the movie is regarded by many to be the quintessential western film score. Elmer Bernstein’s score was nominated for an academy award. He wrote over 150 film scores during his life. This music is perhaps some of the most recognizable in the history of cinema.
