Academia del Terruño
• The Terroir Academy is a project that provides training and education all about the terroir.
• It studies and analyses, in depth, the complexity of the terroir concept.
• It rounds off and complements the classic academic programmes of viticulture and oenology.
• The project explains how the soil type, climate and grape variety influences the characteristics of the wine, based on our 25 years of experience.
• It is aimed at somelliers and wine sales professionals
• It reinforces concepts by means of data, case studies and the tasting of wines of distinct soil types, climates, grape varieties and human practices (style, market trends, production options…)

ABADIA RETUERTA

Our Wines
ABADIA RETUERTA
PV
It is a single vineyard wine. The particular terroir of its vines, with mostly sandy soils, as well as its subsequent resting in the barrel, is what makes it quite so exquisite. The true expression of a complex variety.

PROFILE:
A highly original, near-groundbreaking wine. Its grape variety can only ripen on a particular terroir (in this case, where the soils have deep water reserves, sloping slightly to the west) and with careful management (i.e. years of observation). Its flavour is ever developing, and it still benefits from being left to rest in the bottle thanks to its great ageing potential.
POSITIONING:
• A limited-production wine, from the terroir
• Due to the variety’s complex balance and long cycle, this wine is not usually produced in cold vintages
• Sandy, gravelly soil, with a phreatic zone near the surface
• WMC concept
• Sommeliers consider it an iconic wine, due to its originality and limited availability
KEY MESSAGES:
• A single vineyard. A wine produced on a very limited run
• A wine that improves over time, for many years
• Despite the fact that Petit Verdot is not native to the region, this wine still has all the style and spirit of an Abadía Retuerta wine
Pago Valdebellón
It is a single vineyard wine. It is grown on the warmest part of the estate (i.e. soil, exposure), which enhances the qualities of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety.
PROFILE:
A wine that has grown/evolved following its successful adaptation to the Valdebellón plot. It is defined by the character and qualities of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety.
POSITIONING:

• A limited-production wine, from the terroir
• A classic: it is one of our original wines, in production ever since the company’s beginnings (1996)
• From a plot with chalky soils (clay) and a sandy surface. It is surrounded by vegetation, pine trees and aromatic herbs
• Considered one of Spain’s best Cabernet Sauvignons (V. de la Serna)
• It is becoming an iconic wine, sure to become a “must-have” each vintage
KEY MESSAGES:
• A single vineyard wine, from the part of the estate where there is perfect equilibrium between soil, climate and grape variety
• A wine that requires perseverance, patience and constant observation
• A wine that improves over time, for many years
• A single-variety wine, showcasing the sheer quality of the grapes grown on our terroir ABADÍA RETUERTA
Pago Garduña
It is a single vineyard wine. This particular plot “shields” the wine from the sunshine (it is a north-facing plot, sloping to the east), thus enhancing the qualities of the Syrah grape variety.

PROFILE:
An innovative wine in terms of the region. It has proven, ever since its first vintage, that the Syrah (Shiraz) variety is well-suited to our terroir. The aim is for the “northern”-style profile of this variety to keep developing, like the great Hermitage or Cornas varieties from the northern Rhône region.
POSITIONING
• A limited-production wine, from the terroir
• First vintage: 2000, due to the potential it was already showing
• A Syrah grown in a cool, almost continental climate, very different to the profile of the Mediterranean Syrah wines
• White and luminous chalky soils (clay)
• Considered to be one of the best Syrah wines in Spain (Luis Gutiérrez: Parker)
• An iconic wine for both sommelier and consumer — it is sure to become a “must-have” each vintage
KEY MESSAGES:
• A single vineyard. A great wine that seeks all the signature style of the Syrah variety,
• A single-variety wine, showcasing the sheer quality of the grapes grown on our terroir
• Despite Pago Garduña’s smoothness and relatively low tannin content, it is perfect for cellaring and can be aged for many years.
ABADÍA RETUERTA
Pago Negralada
It is a single vineyard wine. It comes from the part of the estate which due to its proximity to the River Duero, its soil, phreatic zone and low temperatures enhances the qualities of the Tempranillo variety.

PROFILE:
Among the very best Tempranillo wines from the Ribera del Duero. It is bound to make an impact given its early potential, and is sure to keep refining over time and thus duly become an iconic wine of Abadía Retuerta.
POSITIONING:
• A limited-production wine, from the terroir
• Our most classic wine:, in production ever since the company’s beginnings (1996)
• Despite the new, warmer climate conditions, this plot is located on the coolest part of the estate, which means we can maintain its original character
• Sandy and gravelly soils, with deep water reserves due to the plot’s proximity to the River Duero
• The ultimate expression of Tempranillo, i.e. the most well-known and recognisable variety from the Duero region, all around the world
KEY MESSAGES:
• A single vineyard. A wine that shows all the purity of the Tempranillo variety
• A great wine, from a variety native to Spain and the Duero region
• It improves over time, for many years
• A single variety wine, showcasing the sheer quality of the grapes grown on our terroir

Cuvée Palomar
This wine revives the concept and style of Abadía Retuerta’s old Cuvée Palomar (a wine of great quality and balance). It is wellsuited to the present moment, in terms of the climate situation, and has benefitted from all the experience of our technical team.

PROFILE:
Defined by the natural balance of the varieties, as well as the particular terroir and the vintage in question. Each year, the aim is to reach a natural equilibrium that takes into account all the key factors: climate, soil and grape variety. This wine’s ideal grape is fresh and acidic, without compromising on ripeness or the house style.
POSITIONING:
• To strengthen Abadía Retuerta’s positioning strategy
• A product that brings balance to our portfolio
• A new wine that is coherent with the current context and situation of the market
• A perfect wine for hotels and restaurants, and superb for specialised wine sellers
KEY MESSAGES:
• A wine that recaptures the essence of our old Cuvée Palomar
• A great terroir wine: it is highly delicate and refined, with excellent balance
• A wine that is a very contemporary wine: it is well-adapted to the challenges of climate change
• A wine that is the result of the research and experience of our technical team
• A blended wine that brings out the best characteristics and natural equilibrium of its various grape varieties
• New vintages will retain the wine’s signature style, while still being defined by the specific vintage
ABADÍA RETUERTA

LeDomaine
An age-worthy white wine from the Duero Valley, at a high altitude. It is the result of a lucky accident, and is made from all the goodness of our terroir.

PROFILE:
Following years of study and observation, this wine is defined by the way it has behaved experimentally, and by its age-worthiness. Experience has shown us that harvesting the grape at exactly the right time is crucial in this case (it is somewhat sensitive in terms of acidity). Aged in barrels, only 20% of which are used barrels, to ensure that the wine/terroir reaches its full expression.
POSITIONING:
• An age-worthy wine
• A product that enriches our portfolio, that sets us apart
• A wine that seeks to fill the gap for superb white wine in Spain
• A scarce and sought-after wine, sold by quota
KEY MESSAGES:
• A great wine, more than just a white wine
• Its excellence is due to its intense bouquet, superb volume and unctuousness
• A terroir wine, made at altitude in the Duero Valley region
• It was originally produced following a fortuitous mistake, and the tireless work of our technical team
• This is a field blend wine, a mix of distinct varieties that are cultivated in the same plot, before being harvested at the same time and processed together
• Perfect for cellaring, designed to improve and grow in the bottle
ABADÍA RETUERTA
Selección Especial
It is made from a selection of the best grapes from each of our plots: it combines the richness of Tempranillo, the intensity of Syrah and the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon. Our most well-known wine, internationally.

PROFILE:
Selección Especial is a great wine. It stands out due to its superb age-worthiness, and because it reflects Abadía Retuerta’s work philosophy: to bottle the true essence of the terroir.
POSITIONING:
• A wine that exhibits the development and consistency of Abadía Retuerta’ s wines, over the course of 25 vintages
• A wine that tells a story and keeps evolving, year after year
• The winemakers try to maintain the same signature style, with the inevitable influence of the vintage (as expected with terroir wines)
• An ever-dependable, award-winning wine: it has won numerous accolades and prizes, from both wine experts and the general public.
• A very highly-rated wine, as proven by its high turnover in all market channels, both retail and to hotels/restaurants.
KEY MESSAGES
• A wine for which the best wines of the vintage are selected and blended.
• A winning wine in its range/positioning
• A wine with great recognition in the market by the trade and by the end consumer.
• Known for its trajectory and consistency year after year.
• A safe bet, an extraordinary wine and part of our history.
