Career Tech High School in St. George, Utah is the first of it's kind in the school district and a one-of-a-kind learning experience. With an inspiring campus, the design draws architectural influences from the symbiotic ecosystem of the thriving mountain landscape that surrounds the school. In the interior spaces, through the use of varying materials, textures and colors, the school embodies a curious mindset and pushes the boundaries of conventional education establishments.

The school’s unique design includes a variety of learning spaces from culinary arts to construction, cyber security to robotics, and TransFORM Studio –Patcraft’s design services – helped with the creative vision. Serving as a partner throughout the project, TransFORM Studio brought ideas for layout and color schemes, incorporating flooring for branding and wayfinding, while also providing resources for success both during and post-installation.

Inspired by the area’s Pine Valley Mountain Range, the design incorporates colors and natural elements connected to the local landscape.
TransFORM Studio designer, Katie Myers Wender, collaborated with the Career Tech team on materials selection, branding, wayfinding and the flooring layout, providing 2D and 3D visualization to help with the design process.
“We’re so proud of this school. It's a one-of-a-kind building. Our goal was to make it special and design it well. With open ceilings and glass door closets and connections to the outdoors, everything is visible. It’s a school building that teaches you as well.”

AdMix homogeneous tile is used throughout the hallways on all levels of the school for wayfinding and directionality – with colorful accents designed to emulate mountain scenery. Bringing the outside in.

Creating curious spaces for curious minds, the learning environment is designed to motivate, challenge and inspire innovative thinking. From hands-on instructional experiences to communal classrooms, these evolving spaces take on a new form and prepare the students of today for the careers of tomorrow.
Flooring plays an important role in the design of learning spaces, and balancing acoustics to help with noise reduction contributes to the functionality of the space. Performance attributes including resistance to scratch and scuff and roller mobility are important features to consider.

Creating connections with the outdoors and incorporating natural light provides an opportunity to reset and recharge as students transition between classes.
Wayfinding elements guide movement throughout the building and, through personalized design, the school’s spirit is created, enhancing connections for all who walk the halls.

AWARD PROGRAM
Creating a learning environment that encourages collaboration, critical thinking and innovation requires inspiring design.
To celebrate these schools of the future, Patcraft will present a $1,000 donation to 3 schools that transform learning through design and the experience of their students, faculty and communities. K-12 and higher education facilities that feature Patcraft flooring are eligible. In addition to the school donation, a prize will also be awarded to the design firm who worked on the winning installations.
