Surrey South, White Rock go blue Tricia Weel
Colour the Semiahmoo Peninsula blue. Both Trevor Halford in Surrey-White Rock and Brent Chapman in Surrey South delivered victories for the B.C. Conservatives on B.C. Election Night (Saturday, Oct. 19), with convincing leads in their ridings over the B.C. NDP’s Darryl Walker (in Surrey-White Rock) and Haroon Ghaffar (in Surrey South). Halford held an election night party at Ocean Park Pizza, where the atmosphere was electric and supporters were charged up. As enthusiastic supporters watched the results pour in, chants of “Trevor! Trevor! Trevor!” reverberated though the popular pub and restaurant. Halford, who won with 52.48 per

cent of the vote (14,257 votes), was extremely happy with the results. “I’ve got a track record of working hard in this riding, and their support has been so huge,” he said Saturday. “It’s been an interesting eight weeks… Hard work pays off, and I think we saw the result I thought we were going to have.” Halford added that he will always put his community first, “and that’s not going to stop.” Walker, who received 12,261 votes (45.14 per cent), said Monday that it was a fair election, in his opinion. “The people of the community spoke, and they have chosen as their MLA Trevor…I did talk to Trevor this morning and I congratulated him on his victory, and from there we move on,” he said, noting he belongs to several organizations that constantly keep him busy. “One way or the other, a lot of people came out and supported what we stood for – what I stand for – and I think that that bodes particularly well. I’m very pleased and proud of the people I worked with, and I think we did really really well.” The third candidate in Surrey-White Rock, Libertarian Damyn Tassie, garnered 646 votes (2.38 per cent). In Surrey South, the result stood at a convincing 12,471 votes for Chapman, 59.12 per cent of the vote, with 8,625 for Ghaffar (40.88 per cent).
