B

ailey Glendenning Stark, CEO of Glendenning Brothers, last year hired a fresh-faced but familiar associate to help steer the tank truck carrier. Her younger sibling, Brena.

Their sisterly partnership, once inconceivable for the family-owned bulk transporter, is part of a calculated company transformation that features a young leadership team with fresh perspective, a revitalized tank cleaning operation eager to serve third-party customers again—and an ambitious plan to expand the Illinois-based business founded by two brothers that practically begs for an obvious brand refresh.

“They may have to change the name,” joked Kevin Glendenning, their proud father, who established Glendenning

Brothers, Inc., with his younger brother in 1993.

The sisters hope to use their combined academic and outside experience to modernize the tank transportation specialist—which traces its roots to the first tractor Kevin purchased in 1976 to serve his father’s farming business—for customers and drivers, while helping their parents transition from trucking to retirement.

“My goal is growth, but what I’ve figured out is, in this industry, we’re not going to be able to grow simply by

buying equipment,” Bailey explained.

“You also can’t just buy companies and expect everything to work. It’s a different world than when my dad started. It’s tougher, and good people are harder to find and keep.

“So we’re trying to figure out different ways to do things.”

Chosen by trucking Kevin, 65, went a different direction years ago. But not necessarily by choice.

The fourth-generation farmer considered going to college. He wanted to be a lawyer. But he put family first and stayed home to work for Glendenning, Inc., then owned by his grandparents, his dad, George, and his uncle, Floyd, tending to 3,000 cattle and the crops

that fed them, as he did throughout his youth. “The marker of when we could go to work was when we could keep the clutch pushed in on the 4010 John Deere tractor,” Kevin recalled.

He partnered with older brothers George and Terry to finance the family’s first Class 8 truck, a White Freightliner conventional with a Caterpillar 3406 engine, so they could begin transporting their own grain from farm to market.

Then he learned there wasn’t a place for him in the business. Kevin is the third of four boys, and Floyd also has two boys, and they determined the work only supported two brothers from each family. So he bought out George and Terry’s interest in the Freightliner, setting the course for a career in transportation.

“You do what you have to do, whether you like it or not—so that’s what I did,” Kevin said.

Younger brother Doug joined him after high school, and they spent the next several years as owner-operators, first hauling refrigerated LTL freight from Chicago to the West Coast, and then livestock to Midwest markets and feedlots. The brothers decided they needed to grow the business after both married in 1987, and Doug knew a shipper who needed help moving rendered products, like liquid lard, so they seized the opportunity, acquiring their first Heil trailer and devoting themselves to tanks in 1989—the same year Kevin and wife Kim welcomed Bailey.

“We thought it was a better market, and a more niche business that was a better fit for a small carrier like us,” Kevin recalled. “And at the time, both of us were driving ourselves. So we really started from the ground up.”

To focus on growing the business, Kevin traded his truck for a table in 1991.

The brothers registered Glendenning Brothers as a C Corp two years later, then expanded to 20-plus trucks over the next decade. Today, the for-hire bulk carrier hauls edible oils and other food-grade chemicals for a range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and pet food, using 12 Freightliner trucks and 25 Polar tank trailers.

The company also has 20 employees, including Bailey, 34, and her sister, Brena Ingersol, 31, director of human resources.

“It’s been a good living,” said Kevin, who now prefers an advisory role. “It’s not an easy living. But I always wanted to make something that carries on. And that’s what I’m excited about—that it is going to continue. I know Bailey and Brena will keep it going.”

Unexpected reunion Bailey also wanted to be a lawyer, and she did go to college, securing a bachelor’s in business from Trinity International, and master’s degrees in business administration (with a focus on management and entrepreneurship) and human resources at DePaul University.

But while rushing to complete her bachelor’s in three years, she forgot to secure the required internship. “So I got to the last minute and needed something, and I said, ‘Dad, can I come work for you?’” she said.

He obliged, and Bailey ended up enjoying the experience. “I liked seeing the results of the work I was doing, and having control over its direction,” she recalled. So she joined the company in an HR role in 2010—then spent the next few years proving she isn’t simply “the

professor.” Traditionally, women didn’t enter the family business, so the move was “a bit controversial,” Bailey recalled, and her dad wasn’t an easy boss.

“I did everything I could to run her off the first five years,” Kevin admitted.

“I was the toughest boss anyone could imagine. I was so hard on her, and I tried to push her out, and I did that because this isn’t the industry I chose.

“I didn’t want that for my daughter— but she did choose it.”

So did Brena, eventually. She followed her mother’s footsteps into nursing after college, but while seeking a change last year realized she could help Bailey run the business, and her parents ease into retirement, and still reserve more time for her young family, including newly adopted baby boy, Roman. she fills Bailey’s old HR role—which their mom took on after retiring from nursing—while working remotely from Indianapolis, where husband Chris, a plastic surgeon, is finishing his residency. “Maybe I’m crazy, but here we are,” she laughed. And their parents couldn’t be happier. “It’s completely unexpected,” Kevin said. “But they’re

intelligent people, and if anyone can survive in this business, it’s them.”

Fresh perspective Bailey was crowned CEO in 2013, but in a ceremonial capacity. She was the tiebreaker in any disagreement between her dad and uncle, who were co-owners then. She assumed full responsibilities

of the position after Doug exited the business in 2015. And now, with Brena on board, she’s supported by her oldest friend—the yang to her yin. “We work well together,” Brena said. “We’ve been like that since we were kids.

“We’re polar-opposite personalities, but we understand each other in a way no one else does.”

He helped Kevin merge LCX, which was established for hazardous materials hauling before deregulation, with Glendenning in 2015. They added tank wash manager Mike Ortiz, 36, and shop manager Blake Cohoon, 39, in August.

“We’re very driven, and we’ve got a lot of youth for the first time—other than when my dad first started,” Brena said.

They’re also bringing fresh perspective from their diverse array of backgrounds. Ortiz previously operated a mobile vehicle cleaning business.

Cohoon worked in manufacturing at Chrysler. Brena, who holds a master’s in nursing from the University of Cincinnati, still works as a nurse practitioner in a limited capacity at Goodman Campbell. Bailey, a long-time member of National Tank Truck Carriers’ board of directors who chairs the association’s workforce committee, spent a summer as a Congressional intern in Washington D.C., and Stark boasts clients across multiple industries, including transportation, construction, and health care.

Their mission is to incorporate those learnings in a way that advances the business.

“We have a respected name in the industry, and a respected brand, but we have to change with the times,” Brena asserted. “So we’ve talked a lot about,

how do we rebrand as a new management team, and move things into 2024?”

One way is to leverage Brena’s medical expertise to improve driver health.

Another is to establish a registered tank truck driver apprenticeship with the U.S. Department of Labor—an NTTC effort Bailey leads—that allows tank truck drivers to start hauling interstate loads before they pick a different path.

“Hopefully, we push our apprenticeship through … and begin bringing in younger people who can start as drivers, graduate into safety, dispatch, or maintenance, like many NTTC leaders have done, and ultimately lead our companies,” she said.

A clean start Bailey’s hoping Mike, an entrepreneurial engineer by trade and training, takes their tank wash to the next level.

The Stillman Valley, Illinois-based tank truck carrier hauls edible oils and other food-grade chemicals and products for a range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and pet food.

Glendenning established its cleaning facility soon after opening its doors because no one nearby performed the service. “We started washing trailers just out of need,” Kevin said. He and Doug designed and installed the tank wash, which, after several upgrades, includes an automated spinner machine, 1 million-BTU Lochinvar boiler that maintains 3,000 gallons of hot water from a well system, and 300-gallon tank for non-recirculated soap. A Fulton boiler provides steam, and a commercial-grade fan dries newly cleaned trailers.

The facility pumps wastewater into an 18,000-gallon underground storage tank, then trucks it to treatment facilities in two municipalities.

The system isn’t fancy, Kevin says, but it works—when someone’s operating it.

He struggled to replace two longtime tank cleaning employees after they retired, so Glendenning stopped offering services to third parties, like Indian River Transport, and eventually ceased all cleaning several years ago, except for emergencies—until Mike came along. He stopped by to offer his tractor detailing service, and Kevin was so impressed, he and Bailey contracted him to run their cleaning operation, now billed as Mr. Mike’s Truck Wash. “He’s young and energetic, and he’s a true entrepreneur,” Kevin said.

After repairs and upgrades, Mr. Mike’s opened in December. The two-bay, foodgrade cleaning facility now offers interior and exterior truck and trailer cleans, including Kosher washes, six days a week, along with after-hours calls. “I live 2 minutes away and have nothing

normal business hours, and no one was home. “That has to do with the workforce shortage, but it also has to do with the training and dedication of the staff,” Stark insisted.

With Mike on board, diligence no longer is a concern for Glendenning.

“We don’t do a lot of things big commercial washes are doing but I’ll put the quality of the wash up against theirs anytime because it comes down to what the person washing the trailer knows, and how much they care,” Kevin maintained. better to do than make sure this tank wash is successful,” Mike said.

He’s already boosting driver morale by slashing turnaround times. “That makes a huge difference for drivers from a psychological perspective,”

Bailey said. “And on the financial side, it’s more cost-effective for us. Outside tank washes are expensive, and the quality is so unreliable.” So is the help, Stark added. A Glendenning driver recently visited a wash rack during

That near-death experience also accelerated the family’s succession plans.

“It’s been on everybody’s radar since the buyout with my uncle,” Bailey said.

“They didn’t do any planning, so it didn’t go well. They had a formal structure, but they didn’t really pay attention to it.

Nobody looked at how things were valued, or the metrics, because it never mattered.

They just continued on, day after day.”

This time, the family’s documenting every detail, with Stark’s help. Their intention is to transfer ownership of the company to Bailey in a structured, tax-friendly buyout with a phased redemption of shares that allows Kevin and Kim to comfortably retire to their second home in Florida. “Succession and tax planning have to go hand in hand,” Stark advised. They expect to complete the process this year.

“It gives us a lot of comfort,” Kevin affirmed.

So does keeping the business in the family. Generational transfers typically are the most successful transitions in transportation, Stark asserted, helping companies better protect customers, employees, and valuations, compared to selling to a third party. Still, it’s critical for everyone to concur on expectations and timelines early on. “When those conversations aren’t had up front, and agreed to formally, eventually someone comes back unhappy,” Stark said.

“Whether the kids think they overpaid, or the parents think the company grew and they should get a taste of the upside growth, and they weren’t paid enough.

“Those are two major reasons for litigation.”

Clerical errors also can complicate concerns, so it’s wise for everyone to have an attorney review documents to account for any competing interests—especially when they’re related, Bailey added. “Even when it’s a friendly transaction, and all parties agree about it, the lawyers can only look at it from one side,” she cautioned.

Fortunately, the family’s on the same page in this affair. “At the end of the day, it makes more sense financially for them and the business to do this,” Bailey concluded. “It’s better for everybody, so it’s been surprisingly easy.”

Future fortification Growing the business in a soft market won’t be easy. But Bailey always has a plan, Stark observed. “Nothing is left to chance,” he said. “Everything is thought out five years ahead. That doesn’t mean plans don’t change—but there is a plan.”

As a liquid bulk carrier, they also operate in “one of the most insulated segments in transportation,” helping shield them amid economic downturns, Stark attested, and Glendenning’s business is built on shipper relationships, not brokered freight, helping preserve rates and margins.

Bailey endeavors to establish a network of 20- to 30-truck terminals in a measured expansion that preserves those relationships. “Any bigger, and we risk losing that close-knit dynamic— and I think we’d lose our identity,” she said. But to achieve that objective, Glendenning will need to boost organic growth with acquisitions, she acknowledged. That’s why Stark says he “can definitely see Glendenning expanding on the buyer’s side.”

They’ll also have to fill the trucks they have—which is no easy task, Brena said.

Glendenning drivers are paid well and receive “unparalleled” health benefits, Stark said, and managers try to find the runs and hours they prefer, but turnover continues to be an issue amid the worsening driver shortage. “What’s hard for us is, as our manufacturing customers adjust their schedules to be better for

their workers, it takes flexibility away from us, which presents different challenges,” Bailey said.

Reopening the tank wash should help keep drivers around. Glendenning’s current drivers already are happier. They united to buy a Christmas present for Mike to show their appreciation for tank trailers that always are cleaned properly and ready to tow. Bailey and Mike also plan to expand the facility, adding a driver’s lounge and, eventually, more truck parking; and the services they offer, adding inspections and routine maintenance items in hopes of growing outside business. Mike’s initial goal is to wash 10 trucks and 10 tanks per day.

“We’re excited to offer our services to everyone,” he said.

They’re ideally situated to serve a variety of customers, including protein, dairy, and warehousing companies in the small towns around them, like Rockford and Rochelle, and carriers who want to avoid Chicago’s crowded tank washes.

“We’re in a good area because we’re just outside Chicago, and we’re close to I-88, I-90, and I-39,” Kevin said.

With Glendenning’s sisters leading the way, they’re also in good hands.

Their intention is to further their father’s work, and fortify the future for their family business, so they, too, have something to pass on to Roman and Emma, Bailey’s 1-year-old daughter— potentially the third generation of tank truckers. “I have absolute confidence their business will keep doing well and growing,” Stark concluded.

“One, their relationships are solid in the marketplace, and two, they have a core group of drivers who are exceptionally loyal.” BT

Tank cleaning has come a long way in 40 years.

The equipment is more advanced, the procedures are more refined, and the byproducts are more environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, as recent events in South Carolina and Texas tragically remind us, the job remains hazardous.

It also remains an essential service that protects our nation’s food, chemical, and energy supply chains.

“Tank trailers are not disposable,” said Bill McNutt, president of WCM Group, which specializes in environmental permitting and compliance across multiple industries, including tank trailer transportation and cleaning.

“When you deliver a load, you don’t throw the tanker away.

You’ve got to clean it.”

Sadly, the task isn’t getting any easier—or more glamorous.

Shippers continue to manufacture new products, each with their own unagreed-upon cleaning requirements; growing government and regulatory scrutiny make operating a tank cleaning facility increasingly complex and cost-ineffective, especially in regard to air permitting and wastewater disposal, suppressing the number of new tank washes coming online,

“The price of entry into the trailer-cleaning business is immensely higher and more complicated—in terms of dollars and human capital—then it used to be,” McNutt asserted. “It’s evolving to be prohibitive for many companies.”

“I love what I do,” Vineyard said. “I’ve done it for 31 years.

I wouldn’t know how to act doing anything else.”

He may finally have an ally who can help people do it better, too.

Brandon Johnson, who’s president of the Hagen Johnson Group and the International Milk Haulers Association, is developing a system he says unites all cargo tank stakeholders—including tank cleaners, owners, and manufacturers; and shippers, receivers, and regulatory bodies—in food-grade transport and beyond, by forcing collaboration on standardized processes that boost supply chain transparency and consistency.

“It’s going to happen. The government will set the standard if we don’t,” Brandon said.

“So I’d rather have us, the people in the industry, do it first, and help bring forth a way to clean tanks that works for everyone.”

Quality of life Jeff White, whose family owns White Tank & Truck Repair and Commercial Transport, both headquartered in Belleville, Illinois, is fortunate. He employs a highly tenured tank wash technician, Chris Balster, who takes his role seriously—and

understands his worth. “The president of [a shipper customer] came in, and walked through the wash, and [Balster] told him his position was the most important in the company,” White chuckled.

Vineyard agreed, calling tank cleaning “the foundation” for bulk hauling, and tank wash technicians essential workers. “They are the heart of what we do, if you really want to know the truth,” he insisted. “Yes, drivers are important, too, they move the load, but they can’t move it if they don’t have a

Still, finding folks who are eager to enter the industry is a challenge. It’s a difficult, blue-collar occupation, frequently performed in unfriendly conditions, that many people don’t know about.

Confined-space safety Tank cleaning is safer and greener than in the 1980s, industry insists. “There is more attention by everyone cleaning tanks to safety and the environment, so it’s evolved,” McNutt said. “It still has a ways to go, but it’s a factor of 100 better than it was 40 years ago.” Recent events offer sobering reminders of the job’s inherent dangers. Two techs suffered hydrogen sulfide exposure at a tank wash in October 2023 in Beaumont, Texas, and a man died after a chemical incident at a tank service facility in January in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Tank cleaning facilities are adopting technologies that better protect their employees, including automated valves and spinners, and cameras for shop floors and cargo tank interiors. NTS is capturing images of clean trailers on tablets and evaluating a video system for post-wash inspections in hopes of abating confined-space entries. “It is a camera technology that checks the tank’s cleanliness from outside the vessel, so

Finding and protecting workers aren’t the only tank wash challenges. Air permitting is evolving into a “big” issue with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), McNutt said, local governments continue to tighten wastewater thresholds— with more regulation looming—and trailer equipment often isn’t optimized for cleaning.

Tank wash registration and permitting varies at the federal and state levels, and from municipality to municipality, McNutt said, making navigating the regulatory landscape laborious.

“They all have different programs, so it’s a challenge, and if you don’t speak the language, it’s tough to get anything done expeditiously,” he maintained. Or at all. In Texas, for instance, operators need only show they’re installing the “best available control technology” for the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions released during cleaning, but a few Texas cities no longer issue any permits for washing transportation equipment, Wickham said.

EPA Region 5, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, now is scrutinizing VOC emissions at tank washes, added Donny Hearn, WCM executive vice president. “We have several clients who’ve had inspections, and they were asked for data on what they’re doing and how they’re doing it,” he said. Vapor abatement includes flares, thermal oxidizers, and carbon absorption, but agencies estimate emissions differently, and capital and maintenance costs hinge on system selection.

Wastewater disposal NTS is upgrading vapor collection and monitoring, and wastewater treatment capabilities—improvements that include increasing storage capacity, allotting more time for solids to settle, and adding dewatering boxes and BTEX air-stripping towers—but its wastewater-stream expenses still are up 38% year-over-year, Mike revealed. “The jurisdictions are tightening their pollutant limits, which drives our sewer surcharges up,” he said.

“Even with capital injections to improve our systems, we still see costs increasing.”

Hearn isn’t surprised. State and federal regulators are tightening limits, forcing municipalities to follow suit, and the associated costs “move upstream” to WCM clients, he said.

“As analytical methods improve and detection levels lower, those things become the highlight, and now we’re looking for parts per trillion—which is a flake off a gnat’s eyelash of material in wastewater, and quite frankly, once it’s there it’s hard to remove,” he said.

WCM is seeing growing sensitivity to per- and polyfluorinated substances, or PFAS, which is in fire-fighting foam, and filled the wastewater trucked from Ohio to Texas Molecular in Deer Park, Texas, after the East Palestine train derailment.

“If I can’t discharge it to my POTW [publicly owned treatment works] I have to truck it somewhere as a waste, to have it incinerated or deep-welled, driving the cost up dramatically,” Hearn said. Insurers also are starting to ask questions about PFAS, so cautious tank washes are avoiding it, he added.

Equipment is evolving to meet new limits—when companies can afford it. “You’re going to pay a significant amount of non-revenue-generating money to clean a trailer, which causes some people to reconsider,” Wickham said. However, current technology can address most challenges, with an extra step or two, if facilities go “back to basics” on residual control. “Sometimes, if they simply refocus their efforts, they can maintain compliance,” he said.

And a select few shippers are starting to take back heel, Johnson said.

“As their waste disposal costs go up, they’re going to start seeing that as an effective cost-saving measure, too,” he said.

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK ■ Wash racks part of its Regional Emphasis Programs (REPs) in Regions V and VI that go through July 2026 and July 2024, respectively, and are renewable. “It has certainly kept everybody on their toes,” Wickham acknowledged. But the REPs also give OSHA license to enter facilities and look for other issues, and the agency has emphasized enforcement over education, leaders lamented. “There is a help piece, but we haven’t been able to get together as an industry, with OSHA, to realize it,” Wickham said. “There’s still a gap there.”

Additionally, EPA recently issued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for used drum management and reconditioning that promises to “put a kibosh in the supply chain” if it leads to tank washes requiring Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) treatment, storage, and disposal (TRD) permits, which “take years” to obtain, Hearn said. “That’s a significant potential change in how tank trucks manage residue left inside a tank after coming back from unloading product,” McNutt confirmed. And the January 2026 compliance date for the Food and Drug Administration’s Food Traceability final rule is fast approaching.

“All entities are coming at you,” said Curl, pointing out the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) also regulate haulers of hazardous materials.

Growing complexity led NTS to hire an industrial hygienist. It’s also forcing facilities to adopt a “significant amount of technology to achieve compliance,” Wickham said, and carriers to take on third-party business to cover expenses.

“The rules will continue to be more of a challenge, which is going to force more tank washes to have enough size and throughput to absorb additional costs, or go out of business,” Brandon said.

Dry bulk equipment Cleaning out certain dry bulk products like flour, which acts like concrete when it’s wet, comes with unique complications shippers, tank trailer manufacturers, and equipment suppliers frequently fail to fathom, White argued. Increasingly common “conversion” washes, which prep trailers to haul dissimilar products, are particularly cumbersome because they involve removing all components, like aerators, gaskets, valves, and tubes. “Flour trailers weren’t built with [disassembly] in mind,” White said. “So I’ve got valves that haven’t been off in years … and the bolts are stuck. We’ve broken several flanges, so then we have to take the tank to our welding shop, and a wash that was scheduled for two hours now is a major repair.”

White said he wonders if OEM consolidation is diminishing construction knowledge. “I have trailers classified as ‘edible trailers,’ but when I get them into my shop, I have to redo the loading pipes because they’re welded on, they aren’t within reach of a manhole, and they’ve got U-bolts with black nylon sleeves,” he said. “You can’t do that.”

Ball said. But the process is tedious, so Quantix passes incremental costs to shippers, and denies claims from those who refuse to accept them. “We haven’t had much pushback from customers because they know a contamination problem can cost $300,000 or more,” he maintained.

Standard transparency Further complicating matters, industry constituents aren’t in consensus on cleaning requirements, the definition of a “clean, dry, odor free” trailer, or even the terminology tank washes use from one company to the next. “We’re operating in an industry where there are no standards,” Curl said. “If I go to 30 different places, I’ll find 30 different requirements, I guarantee.” And meeting just a few is a considerable challenge, forcing White to eschew incompatible products. “It’s becoming incredibly difficult to operate with two or three shipper’s requirements because they’re all coming up with different standards,” he said.

That’s why Curl, and a growing cadre of cargo tank stakeholders, believe in “Vessey,” a blockchain technology that digitally documents the life of a vessel used to transfer bulk products with immutable records accessed by any device.

The system includes a QR code permanently affixed to the trailer, and a “go/no-go” loading gauge that assesses a tank’s compatibility based on insurance coverage, current certifications, and configuration. “The system specifically deals with tanks,” Brandon said. “There’s no other program or place that addresses or ensures vessels are cleaned properly. Vessey provides the platform for that.”

Cedar Grove Cheese in Plain, Wisconsin, piloted the system last year; and Foremost Farms and The University of Wisconsin-Madison started a test in January. Now Brandon is looking for “larger” entities to participate in Vessey’s development, while also seeking additional funding and developing a viable business model.

“It’s a good avenue to go down,” Curl concluded. “This is exactly what our industry needs.” BT

Sprint opens technology-filled wash rack in La Porte, boosting Gulf Coast tank cleaning safety and efficiency

Here is something to make the competition’s blood boil: Sprint Transport’s new Trident Tank Wash, which opened in December in La Porte, Texas, enjoys unlimited access to high-pressure steam—without using a boiler.

Instead, the facility taps into NRG’s cogeneration power plant located at nearby La Porte Rail and Terminal, a former DuPont entity co-owned by the Swinbank family, which also owns the Sprint group of companies, for all utilities, including power, water, and superheated steam produced at 600 psi—equivalent to 488 degrees Fahrenheit. “La Porte Rail and Terminal reduces that to 350 psi, and we reduce it to 125 at our site,” explained Josh Noworatzky, president and CEO of Sprint Transport, Sprint Logistics, Sprint Rail Partners, and Trident. “So we’re always washing, because we don’t have boiler breakdowns, and regulators let us pick multiple pressures.”

opened last January in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, just outside Baton Rouge. The tank wash features eight bays, high-efficiency pumps capable of circulating detergent or caustic washes in all eight bays simultaneously, dedicated piping for all cleaning agents, and streamlined PLC controls.

“This is one of the most state-of-the-art facilities on the Gulf Coast,” Noworatzky said.

Building a better wash Sprint selected B&K, and owner Bryan Milam, after visiting Pleasant Valley, Missouri, to tour KAW Services’ tank-cleaning facility, which B&K overhauled in 2019. “We were extremely impressed with how it worked,” said Noworatzky, citing the system’s safety features, automation, and operational efficiencies

as determining factors. “[Milam] designs and engineers the pipes and pumps, and makes the actuated valves work. He’s the mastermind. He even helped us design the facility, where the drains go, the flows, the pitches—everything.”

Trident’s new 12,400-sq.-ft. facility sits on 17 acres of 13-inch concrete, which are part of the Sprint companies’ 30 total acres. The building features corrosion-resistant concrete tilt walls, separate pipes that prevent recycled materials from cross-contaminating vats, and “fly-by-wire” electronics that allow technicians to operate every bay from one touch-screen display connected to the control-room computer via a single ethernet cable.

“The spinner system is quite unique,” said Eddie Putman, Trident manager. “The pumps are variable speed and tied into set frequencies. So, if a hose bursts while spinning a trailer with a corrosive solution, the computer detects the change in amps and automatically shuts off the valves to prevent chemical spillage.” This feature helps make the facility one of the safest Putman’s encountered in a four-decade-long career, he added.

“We selected B&K for its superior build quality and technology, even though the company’s bid was significantly higher than its competitors,” he said.

“Sprint wanted to go with the best system available on the market.”

Operational efficiency The tank wash also boasts an optimized steam rack set to 125 psi thanks to NRG’s turbine-powered plant, Noworatzky said. “Many facilities don’t reach such high pressure due to the limitations of setting boilers to 125 psi, which can be too hot for the vats and increase operating costs,” he explained.

“Often, they opt for a uniform temperature. However, we have the flexibility to regulate the steam to various temperatures.”

Trident reduces pressure to 35 psi for vats, and even lower for parts steaming, Putman said.

The setup is advantageous for Sprint, which runs 750 tankers—many of which transport high-temperature products.

“Most trailers steam panels are rated for 150-psi, but it’s challenging to find tank washes that can provide that level of heat.

We can,” Noworatzky points out.

Trident’s La Porte facility currently runs with two technicians who can clean 15-20 trailers per day, Putman said.

But leaders plan to hire six to eight additional workers as third-party business expands with tank container cleaning, and potentially add a second shift. “Advanced automation allows the company to operate at a higher throughput with less manpower compared to more traditional facilities,” said

A greener cleaner The WCM Group, which specializes in industrial permitting and compliance, and an on-staff environmental lawyer ensure Trident is meeting all local, state, and federal regulations for emissions and wastewater disposal, but the company already is planning to upgrade water treatment and vapor abatement.

Currently, wastewater generated from pre- and final rinses is stored in a holding tank, where pH is adjusted, then trucked to Circon for treatment. But Noworatzky expects to begin sending water to La Porte Rail and Terminal, where a new biotreatment facility is in development, by the end of the year. And to better control air emissions, Sprint leaders intend to replace the facility’s flare, which burns 98% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during cleaning, with a thermal oxidizer that destroys 99.9% of VOCs by the end of Q3, Noworatzky said. “We can manage most of the chemicals out there right now,” he said.

“Once we have or thermal oxidizer in place, we’ll be able to clean anything.” BT

How safety impacts customer satisfaction Safe service levels, on-time performance are the critical factors in tank truck success

Safe deliveries make for satisfied customers, and

successful trucking operations. In fact, service expectations are critical variables that greatly influence key factors like contracts, loyalty, referrals, and retention. Therefore, it’s puzzling that the economy, labor shortages, and operational costs often dominate the industry’s concerns.

Yes, these issues are important, too, but nothing outweighs safety—or its outsized impact on satisfaction. Remember, celebrated businessman Warren Buffett once famously stated, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.

If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” In other words, continually arriving late for pickups or deliveries can have a devastatingly negative impact on a bulk transportation company’s bottom line and reputation, compared to external and internal economic factors.

For this reason, it’s vital to use on-time performance (OTP) as a customer service metric because it measures how well tank truckers align practices with the terms in their service agreements. OTP is a highly compelling metric in determining overall customer satisfaction, loyalty, and lifetime value. To improve OTP ratings, carriers should monitor weather reports, delays in traffic, construction, and route changes to avoid preventable delays. As an illustration of the importance of OTP, the National Private Truck Council lists OTP as a major metric in its 2023 benchmarking survey report.

Some are due to preventable breakdowns and compliance issues. For example, in NPTC’s report, tire issues are the No. 1 mechanical cause for breakdowns (73%), emissions are second (43%), electrical problems are third (34%), and engine and light failures tied for fourth (24%). The report contains

data from 110 trucking companies, with a representation of 71,700 tractors and 77,000 trailers, and highlights the fact that 14% of respondents didn’t complete their PM Currency Rate (based on 100% compliance), according to planned scheduling.

Here are eight essential points to help mitigate risks: • Don’t create practices based only on theoretical approaches to safety. Instead, consider real-life practical applications.

Employees will better retain and utilize the information.

• It’s also important to enforce elevated policies and procedures that mitigate risk. Don’t implement a policy that won’t be enforced. Make sure PM schedules are followed.

• Instruct and educate employees on safety techniques.

Hold weekly or monthly safety meetings that focus on current deficiencies. Move away from quarterly or annual safety gatherings. The gaps between fail to capitalize on real-time opportunities.

• Conduct regular fleet maintenance that exceeds the U.S. Department of Transportation minimum standards. For example, instead of annual inspections complete semiannual or quarterly inspections.

• Implement fleet monitoring systems that are regularly reviewed for compliance. Assign a position with a job description that includes reviewing safety conformance.

• Engage with industry experts to advance trucking. Attend conferences where knowledge is shared and exchanged.

The information was supplied to us by the operators of commercial and carrier-owned tank wash facilities interested in participating in this resource. Listings may include brief descriptions outlining products handled and certifications. Tank operators should contact a facility directly to determine if limitations apply and to verify certifications before sending equipment. There is no charge for the basic listings but companies can upgrade listings to include web and email addresses.

EQUIPMENT NEWS Tremcar grows U.S. production capacity Tremcar’s U.S. division recently completed the construction of a new manufacturing building in Strasburg, Ohio. The additional 20,000 sq. ft. of space will be devoted to producing DOT 406 tank trailers, the company reported.

The new facility doubles capacity—and leaders expect a corresponding production boost in 2024. “Established since 1998 in the United States and since 2004 in Ohio, it was time we invested in renovating our installations to meet greater demands from our customers in the USA,” said Daniel Tremblay, Tremcar president.

The location, which includes three new production lines, has been up and running since October 2023 and production output already has increased, Tremcar said. According to Dave Brooks, Tremcar USA general manager, the $4 million investment was a necessity.

“Production has definitely gone up, our employees are well established, they have mastered the craft of building quality tanks—and the extra space is definitely the peak in achieving production efficiency,” he maintained. Process improvement and safety were key considerations in the new installation, which includes new barrel rotators, fixtures, toolboxes, and more.

“The industry is slowly changing, and we want to step up a notch to lower production costs without neglecting quality,” he said. “We now offer a safer working environment with top-of-the-line technology helping our employees to work smarter not harder.”

Tremcar also is planning to expand its U.S. service facility, which opened in 2018 and is conveniently located near the new manufacturing plant, with a $1.5 million investment to add two additional bays to the eight-bay building. The extra 5,000 sq. ft. of surface area is expected to be functional by the end of this year, offering customers more maintenance and repair space, and increasing Tremcar’s capacity to meet demand.

Milk tanker manufacturer expands operations in Michigan Trinity Truck and Trailer Service, a manufacturer of milk transport tank trailers, is expanding its operations in Ithaca, Michigan.

The $6.75 million, two-phase expansion of its headquarters facility, which includes a repair shop, will create 55 jobs, according to a news release from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The project is supported by a $192,500 performance-based grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC’s) Micro Michigan Business Development Program.

The first phase of the project will enable Trinity to pursue opportunities in the production of milk stainless steel storage silo manufacturing, pasteurization, and other hygienically designed equipment, officials said. Michigan’s agribusiness operations currently rely on out-of-state suppliers for storage silos. In-state production will all Michigan’s dairy producers to source their silos from within the state, resulting in a cost savings.

The second phase will include renovation of the company’s existing repair service facility.

ERoad’s Drive app can be installed on Android-based tablets that exist in the cabs of ready-mix concrete trucks that use CoreHub, ERoad’s telematics gateway device. Job ticketing details—with supporting information—are sent from BCMI’s dispatch platform to drivers’ tablets running ERoad’s app. Subsequently, auto-status updates and log-in details are transmitted between BCMI and ERoad for logging and analysis.

Text messages can be sent to and received from the Drive app, displaying on drivers’ in-cab tablets and visible from BCMI’s dispatch system.

Customers can look forward to: ■ Greater efficiency: The transmission of data and information across the ERoad and BCMI systems, reducing the need

for drivers to engage with multiple hardware and software systems, while also eliminating the need for double entries in disparate applications.

Eagle Transport recently named Hunter Langley the company’s call center manager in Selma, North Carolina, which supports Eagle’s northern district.

Langley joined the carrier in 2021 and transitioned to Selma day dispatcher early last year.

Eagle Transport recently promoted Mike Stevens to district manager. He previously served as terminal manager in Selma, North Carolina. Stevens joined Eagle in 2007 as a dispatcher and worked his way up to managing terminals across the company during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Selma terminal earned Terminal of the Year in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2018, Selma also won Safest Terminal of the Year.

J&M Tank Lines recently added Jeff Arledge and Russell Curbo to its leadership team. Arledge will serve as vice president of maintenance and Curbo is taking on the role of VP of safety, the Birmingham, Alabama-based carArledge Curbo rier reported. Arledge came to J&M in 2021 as maintenance director. He boasts over 20 years of experience in fleet maintenance and management for bulk and food-grade carriers throughout the Southeast. Curbo brings 30 years of transportation experience to J&M, including 12 years with the Arkansas Department of Transportation and five years of carrier safety experience within the Southeast and Central United States.

Odyssey Logistics recently appointed Omar Shamsie as chief commercial officer. Shamsie will focus on driving strategic sales growth, vertical market development, and cross-sell initiatives to deepen customer relationships and drive new business. Shamsie worked at Maersk before joining Odyssey, rising through the ranks over three decades of service to hold several senior international leadership positions in 10 different countries.

Groendyke Transport CEO Greg Hodgen recently passed the title of president to Joe Morrissey as part of a series of leadership changes. Morrissey had served as chief commercial officer since joining Groendyke in 2018. Additionally, the tank truck carrier promoted David Snapp to senior vice president of branding and Robbie Parish to VP of operations.

Morrissey Morrissey was the CEO of CTL Transportation when it still was owned and operated by Guy Bostick’s family. He resigned after CTL’s financial woes led to Pimco’s involvement in 2016. After joining Groendyke, he oversaw the successful integration of McKenzie Tank Lines. Snapp boasts 37 years of trucking experience. Parrish joined Groendyke in 2014 after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Tank trailer manufacturer STE, a subsidiary of Hendricks Holdings Co., recently named Derek Nilsen director of sales and marketing. Nilsen brings extensive experience in trailer sales and marketing, including stainless steel units, steel vacuum trailers and frac tanks, and aluminum livestock trailers, as well as other industrial-grade products.

Brandon Woodard, a Wyakin veteran who served in the Army, recently joined Phillips as corporate director of continuous improvement and operational excellence. He will lead the company’s operations initiatives, focusing on enhancing global manufacturing efficiencies. Woodard previously held aftermarket leadership positions with Meritor and SAF-Holland.

Obituaries Longtime Miller Transporters president and former National Tank Truck Carriers chairman Scott Miller died Nov. 5, 2023, at this home in Madison, Mississippi. He was 85 years old. Scott served as Miller Transporters president for 30 years until his retirement at age 70. He helped establish safety as a priority, leading Miller to its first NTTC Outstanding Performance Trophy in 2007 just before he retired.
