the Fresno American Indian Health Project. ABC 30 News Anchor Margot Kim sang the national anthem, and Pastor Bill Knezovich of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church offered the invocation

“Our fundraisers can be hard work, but they bring the community together and ignite our passion for our mission,” said Ashley Morris, Education & Prevention Director “Fresno didn’t have an HIV/AIDS walk, so a small group from The Living Room decided they would be the ones to create one.”
Planning for the 5K began in June, with the committee first focusing on securing strong community support Gilead, a long-time partner aligned with The Living Room’s outreach efforts, signed on as the Top Presenting Sponsor In addition to several other sponsorships, the event saw outstanding peer-to-peer fundraising participation. Together, these efforts enabled The Living Room to successfully reach its fundraising goal
The event offered fun for the whole family Food vendors and a live DJ kicked off the program and stayed throughout the event. A resource fair featured booths from a variety of industries, along with multiple photo booths, raffles with cash prizes, and more
This year’s entertainment included three drag performances, a musical performance by Liz Lauryn, a Hmong Culture & Art Preservation dance, a color guard presentation by Central CA Color Guard, and a ceremonial drum circle by
Runners set their marks at 10:00 AM after a Zumba warm-up As they took off on the marked course, supporters waited by the finish line with signs, cheers, and encouraging words Families walked together in memory of loved ones; teams represented local organizations; and first-time participants joined simply to show solidarity Whether completing the full 5K or taking a leisurely lap around the park, every step carried meaning and strengthened the message of hope, awareness, and continued advocacy.
At the finish line, the top three racers were greeted with medals, while all participants were offered refreshments and the unmistakable sense of unity that the Fresno AIDS Walk has cultivated for more than a decade Volunteers many of whom have supported the event since its early years helped guide attendees, distribute materials, and answer questions about the services The Living Room provides
The morning culminated in an emotional ceremony that included awards for outstanding volunteers A powerful Reading of Names was conducted by members of Community Medical Center, honoring those lost to the virus, followed by a moment of silence and a dove release to conclude the event
The successful turnout and fundraising total underscore the ongoing commitment of the Fresno community and WestCare’s The Living Room to support and advocate for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.

At WestCare Kentucky’s Camp Mariposa and Camp Morilla, campers, teens, and mentors recently participated in a therapeutic art experience made possible through funding from the National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA). Each participant created a canvas painting featuring expressive imagery and inspirational messages pieces so powerful that they will soon be displayed throughout WestCare West Virginia’s new Men’s Residential Treatment Facility, which is preparing to open its doors
In total, 70 canvases were donated to the facility. Each bedroom now features two paintings, with additional artwork placed in the conference and recreation rooms These visual reminders of hope, strength, and resilience serve as a meaningful connection between the youth who created them and the adults who will soon enter the healing journey within those walls.
Art therapy is an especially effective modality for children and teens impacted by behavioral health challenges, including mental health concerns and addiction within their families Through creative expression, youth are able to process emotions that may be difficult to access through words alone Expressive arts promote emotional regulation, improve cognitive and behavioral functioning, and help young people explore their identities while experiencing a sense of calm, safety, and self-discovery

Thanks to NACoA’s support, both prevention camps were able to offer expanded art therapy programming this year and the success of these activities has inspired plans to continue integrating art therapy into future camps.
Camp Mariposa and Camp Morilla are year-round addictionprevention programs for youth ages 9–17 who are affected by the substance use disorder of a family member Campers attend weekend camps six times a year, where they enjoy traditional camp activities paired with educational sessions and therapeutic support provided by licensed mental health professionals and trained adult mentors Additional social activities for youth and families are provided throughout the year, and all programming is offered at no cost to families
NACoA is the only national membership organization dedicated solely to reducing the impact of alcohol and drug use on children and families The organization partners with affiliates and supporters across the United States and internationally, including in Great Britain, Germany, India, Ireland, Korea, Slovenia, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Each summer, WestCare Wisconsin hosts its Junior Youth Action Council (Jr. YAC) an eight-week program for youth ages 10–14, led by Markeda Williams, Program Director of the Drug-Free Community Coalition
This year, our young ambassadors were eager to become certified in administering Naloxone (Narcan) As several participants shared, “You never know when you might need to use it ” Their enthusiasm and maturity reflect a growing understanding of the importance of being prepared to save a life.
To measure their growth from the start of the program to the end, youth use their voices through a series of creative projects One of their major group projects was a collaborative music video answering the question: Why do you choose to stay drug-free? The Jr YAC members knocked it out of the park and you can watch their video on the WestCare Wisconsin Facebook page

In addition to the group project, participants created individual posters to raise awareness about the dangers of substance use, overdose prevention, and the benefits of Narcan The top four designs were selected for community distribution:
One design will be featured on a high-traffic billboard
One design will be displayed at a bus shelter in the Harambee community
Two designs will travel throughout Milwaukee on the Milwaukee County Transit System.
These projects give our youth powerful ownership of their message, helping them educate their peers in a way that is relatable, relevant, and rooted in their own understanding Their hard work, leadership, and creativity shine through in every piece they produced
