WBeing the “newbie”
Starting as a technician, especially without an automotive background, it’s hard to know what tools you need.
By Emily Markham, Editor Emily@VehicleServicePros.com
hen I first started out with PTEN, the extent of my “automotive background” included being able to put gas in my car and change my windshield wipers. And if someone were to have asked me what I thought a scan tool was, I’d have likely responded it was something akin to those barcode readers they use at the grocery store. Inevitably when attending family gatherings or meeting new people, the question of “So how did you end up in that job with no automotive background?” always comes up.
My answer is simple: I wanted a job where I got to tell people’s stories and where I would constantly be learning. I’m sure, like me, those of you who started out on a different career path before deciding to become a technician have been asked a similar question, and based on the answers we receive whenever we ask this, your answer is simple too – you have a curiosity for how things work and a desire to solve the puzzle when they won’t.
All this to say, I don’t think it matters what kind of background you had
before entering this industry. You can be successful regardless. However, if you’re looking for a little extra guidance on how to stock your toolbox, or more specifically what digital inspection tools to have on hand, check out this month’s Tool Briefing article (pg. 42). Rick Urso goes over some of his favorite time-saving inspection tools and how he likes to use them.
“If you are just starting out in this business,” Urso says, “it takes time to build this arsenal of tools and learn how to optimize them. Do not get discouraged. Slowly build this arsenal one tool at a time.”
In my experience with starting out in this industry, everyone is happy to share their knowledge to help you continue to learn.
Also featured in this issue are the 2024 PTEN Innovation Award winners (pg. 20). So if you’re looking for something new to add to your toolbox, look no further. The products we’re showcasing were hand-picked by a panel of judges out of over 100 submissions as 25 of the best new products to enter the industry in the past year.
Each product was judged on the following criteria:
• Time savings
• Simplifying a task
• Unique/new approach
• Improving a current tool
• Ease of use
If you’re not sure which products would be the best additions to your toolbox, ask one of the more seasoned techs at your shop. And if you do end up grabbing any of these tools, contact us at editor@vehicleservicepros.com to let us know what you picked!

Fish for Buys without Getting Phished
Scam websites are multiplying largely unchecked. Wherever you’re clicking to buy, there’s a real danger of being lured into giving away private information while pursuing hot deals that turn out too good to be true. This type of cybercrime is commonly referred to as “phishing,” the criminal “fishing” for usernames, passwords, credit card data, and other confidential information via fraudulent means.
When fraudsters target buyers at vehiclerepair shops, their scams run to offering astonishingly low prices on high-end shop equipment. All it takes to be taken in is to click on a seemingly legit-looking site to score a great-sounding deal. But when your “order” goes through, no equipment is purchased, and your credit card information — along with other sensitive data — is instantly stolen.
Here are some tips for identifying and avoiding fraudulent websites.
• Look for evidence that the company is legitimate. Does it have a real-world “bricks-and-mortar” presence? You can find that out by trying to contact them directly, as well as by reading independent reviews. These can be found by searching Google or YouTube.
• Are the prices unbelievable? For example, if you’re seeing BendPak equipment advertised for thousands of dollars less than the prices on BendPak.com or other legitimate sites, it’s a scam. Always err on the side of caution and conduct additional research before giving any site your information.
• Check the site for some obvious giveaways. Is the URL misspelled? That’s a huge red flag. Even if the link looks legit, you can doublecheck by right-clicking to “Properties” to reveal the link’s true destination.
• Check the “Lock” Icon. Clicking on the lock icon will give you additional detailed information on the security status of the website you’re on.
• If something about the site seems off, like its general look or the logos displayed, there’s a good chance it’s a fraud.
It is extremely helpful to law enforcement if you take the time to report any sites that have defrauded you, as well as any sites that you determined were fraudulent before engaging with them. You can report fraudulent sites to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the government agency that handles consumer complaints about identity theft and online scams. Report at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/assistant. Also, be sure to report phishing pages to Google so they can be removed from search results and blocked from scamming others. Access Google’s Report Phishing Pages tool at https//safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/. (Or, you know, just Google it.) And if you find sites pretending to represent BendPak or our brands, please let us know at bendpak. com/support/products/report-fraudulent-sites/.

Dual System with Dual Benefits
How TEXA’s Konfort 780 enhances AC service
Touchscreen: Its 10-inch color multi-touch HD screen has Glovetouch sensitivity and an industrial display. This gives technicians greater shop usability and allows a clear view of service status and operations being performed.
In the competitive world of automotive repair, shop efficiency is everything, especially when it comes to supporting air conditioning service for multiple vehicle types and years. With the full process of an A/C service taking around an hour — if there are no leaks detected — increasing the efficiency of this task becomes a focus for shop owners when considering quantity of daily service completed and monthly profit margins.
Enter the Konfort 780 — TEXA’s Dual Gas A/C service machine — that can boost shop profits by decreasing downtime to increase quantity of daily service. The fully automated system saves time by visually confirming all steps in the service process from the Konfort screen or Konfort smart app, so technicians are maximizing their shop time with other vehicle repairs.
Revolutionary Dual System Design
The Konfort 780 is the only true dual-system machine. Other dual gas machines have both R134a and R1234yf running through the same hardware and system lines, while TEXA’s Konfort 780 has two separate internal systems for recovery, recycling, and recharging.
Because there are two separate systems, there is no need to flush the system and lines when changing the refrigerant for new vehicle service. Technicians can easily and quickly transfer from an older Heavy Duty Truck to a newer European car. This creates less contamination and waste, while increasing the efficiency of the refrigerant recovery process.
Cutting-Edge Features
The Konfort 780 boasts a broad range of comprehensive features:
Fully Automatic: The machine itself uses fully automatic functions — automatic compensation recharge line length, automatic management of non-condensable gasses, and automatic maintenance alarms — to diagnose maintenance areas.
Konfort App: To ensure ease of use, the machine can communicate with Android and iOS smartphones through the Konfort APP. This gives technicians the ability to follow the machine's progress remotely, allowing them to perform other tasks while the machine is working.
Wi-Fi Connectivity: The machine allows wi-fi connectivity so that technicians can print reports and connect to the myTEXA portal for saving reports to shop systems, as well as receive remote technical assistance as needed.
Konfort 780 is designed to work seamlessly on a wide range of vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks. The machine has an integrated vehicle database that offers information on the latest original equipment manufacturer diagnostics.
Because the machine uses wi-fi, it can constantly update its software and firmware. Ensuring that it is always delivering reliable and accurate OEM information across vehicle types.

The impact of electric vehicles on the automotive market
Steps to help prepare your shop for electric vehicles.
By Scott Brown, Technical Editor
As you’re aware, the automotive fleet has been evolving with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs). For some states, like California, this trend has been happening for some time at an accelerated rate. For those of us facing this technology change for the first time, it may be intimidating, but it may also introduce several opportunities. Within this article, we’ll explore a wide list of considerations you can use to prepare for this new vehicle platform.
UNDERSTANDING EV TECHNOLOGY AND MAINTENANCE
It’s true, EVs, with their simpler drivetrains, require a different maintenance program than what their ICE (internal
combustion engine) counterparts require. When you break it down to their core components, the electric motor, battery pack, and power electronics make up most of the vehicle. However, there is going to be a different level of diagnostic information and procedures available both within service information (SI) and on the various vehicle data busses than what you’ve been dealing with in the past. For those who have been early adopters, engaging with hybrid vehicles from the past, the road ahead is less blurry. And for those just hopping on the bandwagon, battery health assessment, software updates, and electrical safety are key.
It has been my experience that EV owners are under the impression that the vehicle doesn’t require any maintenance
p Figure 1 – High voltage PPE, Fluke Insulation Tester, and a CATIII DVOM
at all, and this presents a major opportunity for the service market. Most owner’s manuals can be found online through the vehicle manufacturer’s website. I recommend that you study the maintenance requirements for the growing fleet in your location to get in front of what’s required. You can use this information to better inform your current and/or future clients about helping their vehicles operate properly.
For example, some vehicle manufacturers require the replacement of the desiccant bag within the refrigeration circuit at specific time intervals. Another tip I’d like to offer here is that you may want to peruse some of the online forums out there where many motorists hang out and discuss everything about these vehicles. You will be able to gather more intel about various pain points, misconceptions, etc., and use this information to help deliver a higher level of service to your clients.
CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROTOCOLS
Possessing knowledge of various charging standards (Level 1, Level 2, DC Fast Charging, etc.) and their compatibility with different EVs is crucial for those delivering EV service. One of the bigger issues I see often is that for the most part, drivers don’t understand much on this topic. Battery preconditioning for DC fast charging is one of the main issues that comes to mind. Many aren’t aware that the battery needs to be brought to a specific temperature range to fully optimize the proper DC fast charge rate. I have had many discussions with motorists at DC fast charging stations complaining about a slow charge. When I inquire about how they arrived, (typically through their navigation system) they reveal the failure point. For most EVs today, using the NAV will allow the vehicle to recognize the fact that the onboard systems need to prepare the battery for fast charging which often requires heating the battery coolant loop.
p Figure 2 – Tesla heat-pump cooling system service mode page

BRAKE DRUM AND ROTOR PULLER
Eliminates the need to repeatedly strike or heat the brake drum to free it from the hub
Adjustable with a 17" spread and 6" reach to accommodate the most common drum sizes
Specially designed jaws to maximize surface contact ensuring uniform grip even on deteriorated drums
In my opinion, possessing knowledge of Level 1 and 2 chargers today is essential to communicating and facilitating not only troubleshooting charging issues but also advising clients on what they need for home charging.
HIGH-VOLTAGE SAFETY
Working on EVs introduces the risk of high-voltage exposure. If you read any OEM service information, you’ll find statements about how technicians must be trained in high-voltage safety before commencing service on any HV systems. The training should also include proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), dead-live-dead verification procedures, proper inspection of test equipment, proper handling of test equipment, isolation of electrical circuits, and emergency response to electrical incidents (Figure 1).
ASE has a new EV support system called xEV Safety Certifications. This statement comes from ASE’s website (ase. com/ev) explaining the certifications:
p Figure 3 – Tesla heat-pump refrigeration system service mode page
“These ASE xEV High-Voltage Electrical Safety certifications were developed to serve as a guide, sharing existing industry standards, concepts, and practices followed by individuals working in the automotive, truck, and commercial electrical industry.”
On that page you’ll find that there are currently two levels of certification:
• EV Electrical Safety Awareness Certification (Level 1)
• EV Technician Electrical Safety Certification (Level 2)
I encourage you to research these and decide which one is best for you.
REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEMS, TIRES & ALIGNMENT
Regenerative braking presents challenges as well. Understanding how these systems work and what drivers should consider can lead to overall better vehicle energy efficiency and extended tire wear. Tire wear on EVs is a major concern and consumers need to be aware of how to properly drive their vehicle by controlling torque in both acceleration and deceleration. Working the throttle properly can realize big gains in energy efficiency and tire wear. Some EVs have selectable screens to display the true application of torque which can be leveraged to obtain data feedback on pedal application. One of the other items I’ve discovered is that many vehicles leave the factory with the wheel alignment values not supporting optimum tire wear. Performing an alignment audit at the vehicle’s first tire rotation can help consumers get more life out of their tires. Additionally, tire technology continues to evolve and in fact, one tire manufacturer has gone “all-in” on developing an EV-specific tire. Hankook’s iON line of tires has many new attributes and features specifically aimed at conquering the main issues affecting tire wear, vehicle rolling resistance, NVH, and more.
THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
EV battery performance and longevity are controlled through the battery man-
agement system (BMS) to help support optimum battery performance and life. Service personnel should possess knowledge of how important these systems are and their service requirements. Regular inspections of the thermal management components and fluid levels are important. If you ever find a low coolant level condition in a BEV, you need to resist the urge to top off the fluid because there could be
an internal coolant loop leak. If the leak goes unchecked, it could be very catastrophic for the vehicle. In fact, the large motor found on the early Tesla Model S and X vehicles has a design flaw where a leaking coolant seal within the drive unit can destroy the motor assembly (Figure 2). There are companies (Revolt Systems - revoltsystems.com/tesla-largedrive-unit-ldu-coolant-bypass-kit-the-achilles-seal-fix/) out there selling an inexpensive retrofit kit that will eliminate the possibility of this leak from occurring.
Thermal management relies heavily on the refrigeration system as well. This is something that should be inspected and serviced periodically. As mentioned earlier, some manufacturers have a replacement interval for the desiccant which requires a system recovery, evacuation, and recharge. These manufacturers are utilizing heat pump systems (Figure 3) because they can deliver thermal performance at greater efficiencies. Possessing a deep knowledge of the operation of heat pump systems is essential for proper system evaluation.
SOFTWARE AND FIRMWARE UPDATES
Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) is a term you’ve likely heard, and this is how BEVs can improve their operation and performance. Tesla is one manufacturer that has proven
how software updates can keep a vehicle’s operation, performance, and presentation fresh. I own a couple of Teslas and my six-year-old Model 3 has the same improved operational features found on current model year vehicles. Additionally, the service diagnostics available to the technician continue to improve and provide the service technician with great support tools all being delivered through the infotainment screen. Keeping the system up-to-date is important because the vehicle will be able to take advantage of the software engineering changes that support improved vehicle operation.
ADAPTING SERVICE FACILITIES
For the most part, many shops already have most of the tooling they need for basic EV maintenance. However, if you are planning to replace battery packs, then you’ll likely need additional lifting and support devices. And in addition to the training mentioned earlier, you’ll likely want to invest in the proper measurement tools such as high voltage insulation testers, a milliohm meter (Figure 4), and scan tools with enhanced EV support such as the Autel EV Diagnostic Kit (Figure 5) which allows you to interrogate a battery pack without it being able to communicate with the vehicle — think sourcing used battery packs and how you can assess a used unit.

MARKET OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
In some regions of the country, there is a rapid growth of EVs which presents new business opportunities for automotive service professionals. Expanding services to include BEV
maintenance and repair can open new revenue streams. Additionally, the used car market presents challenges such as the condition of the high voltage battery since it is the most significant and most expensive component to replace on BEVs today. Battery assessment is one of the biggest concerns consumers have when it comes to purchasing a used BEV. While some OEMs provide an indicator of battery state-of-health (SOH) through their BMS, the reading is often inaccurate. Companies are working on new tools, equipment, and software in pursuit of generating knowledge on battery assessment. The Autel EV Diagnostic Kit provides a technician with a plethora of tools and battery assessment software for reading BMS data.
ReJoule (rejouleenergy.com) is a company that I have been working with in a pilot testing program where we are assessing battery SOH (Figure 6) through a special DC charger which
p Figure 6 – Live characterization test data on a Tesla Model Y

is performing a 10-minute advanced battery health check via a technique called Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) testing (Figure 7). This EIS test can provide more accurate battery health readings that can then be used to optimize battery maintenance and replacement and provide transparency for used EV transactions. We are running a pilot data collection test by running characterization testing on several dozen popular BEVs to assess battery health.
CONCLUSION
Electric vehicles present challenges and opportunities, but for those who have the right market, it may make sense to gear up and make the transition to support BEVs in your shop.

The benefits of digital inspection tools
A good diagnostic tool arsenal should help you complete jobs faster and more efficiently.
By Rick Urso, Contributing Editor
Any good professional has their own arsenal of tools to get their job done quickly and efficiently. The same thing goes for us technicians and diagnosticians. Some of you may have one built already and some of you may be just getting into building one, and that’s OK because today is your lucky day. I am going to share my diagnostic inspection tool arsenal with you.
I’m sure most techs will be able to relate to this situation — a vehicle comes in with a single-cylinder misfire. Pretty routine, right? You open the hood and, oh no, it’s a Nissan 3.5 liter
and the intake manifold is covering the back three cylinders. Are we going to pull the intake manifold off and swap the plugs and ignition coils, put it back together, and see if the misfire moved? Some technicians might. I'm here to show you a way to figure it out without taking anything apart besides a fuse. Wait, what, just a fuse? This brings me to the first tool in my diagnostic arsenal — the PicoScope.
This tool allows you to see exactly what’s going on with a component electrically and mechanically, displayed on a screen with voltage over time. If we look at Figures 1 and 2 , I have two dif-
ferent lab scopes being used. We see the vehicle with the single cylinder misfire and can see the current flow from all six ignition coils just by interfacing a low amp probe from AESwave to the vehicle via the fuse that feeds the ignition coil’s power. From that, we can deduce the problem — a bad ignition coil. By utilizing these tools, we determined the issue quickly, efficiently, and most importantly, without removing the intake manifold.
PRESSURE TRANSDUCERS
This is a perfect segue into the next tool in my line-up — pressure trans -

ducers, such as the WPS500X from Pico Technology. Have ever you had a mechanical problem on an engine where you were not sure if it was a bad valve, lifter, or camshaft and
only tearing the engine down would show the problem? Great news, we have a better way to justify engine tear-down time. By hooking up a pressure transducer to the intake manifold coupled with a high amp probe to the battery and voltage lead going to the PicoScope, we can crank the engine over and see the mechanical health of the engine.
Figure 1 —This lab scope reading shows the Nissan vehicle with the single cylinder misfire.
In Figure 3 , you can see the blue trace; we have current flow from the starter which directly relates to the compression strokes of the engine. The red trace will be the control voltage to the ignition coil, which tells us what cylinder is firing and when, and the green trace, which is my favorite part, shows the pressure in the intake manifold. With good practice, you can analyze what is wrong with this engine. We have positive pressure pushing into the intake manifold on cylinder 1’s compression stroke via cylinder 1’s intake valve showing that the intake valve is not sealing. This test takes only five minutes to set up, and time is money, baby.
THE TEST LIGHT
Another one of my favorite tools to use when diagnosing electrical problems is the test light. Test lights come in many forms and fashions such as incandescent test lights, which can draw up to 450 mA of current flow, or LED test lights, which draw about 50 mA of current flow. There are endless possibilities of what we can do with these test lights, but one specific example comes to mind.
A vehicle comes in on a hook with a crank with a no-start issue. We find ourselves at the fuel pump relay with our handydandy test light testing power and control to the relay. Now we need to know about the feed wire to the fuel pump. Most of the time, we would have to drop the fuel tank to access this wire. However, with our test light, we can switch the lead to battery positive and lightly touch the pin of the feed wire to
Figure 2 —This lab scope reading shows a shorted ignition coil on a Ford 5.4 engine. Photo courtesy of Rick Urso
the fuel pump (Figure 4). If the light lights up we know the wire and fuel pump circuit are electrically intact all the way from the fuel pump to the ground.
Another quick and efficient way to use a test light, specifically an incandescent test light, is by hooking it up to the battery or chassis ground, then we can activate a lower current flow device, like a relay, to bypass the control for that device.
Figure 3 —This PicoScope reading shows the mechanical health of the engine.

Figure 4 —With a test light, you can switch the lead to battery positive and lightly touch the pin of the feed wire to the fuel pump to see if everything is electrically intact.

SCAN TOOLS
It all starts with a scan tool. Scan tools come in all shapes and sizes and are a technician’s first line of defense. This is where you can quickly gather data and put together a diagnostic direction, all from the comfort of the driver’s seat. One tip I can give you about scan tools, and this goes for most scan tools, is if you customize your data PIDs down to only the ones that relate to the issue, your refresh rate will be much faster, making it easier to find your direction for the repair. I feel that this is the most important job of the scan tool — to find which road of testing you need to go down.
One of my favorite scan tools is the eSCAN Elite from Automotive Test Solutions. This scan tool allows you to pull DTCs and look at Mode 6 data and misfires. It also has its own arsenal of guided tests for dynamic testing. For example, it has a fuel trim sharpshooter test that allows you to drive the vehicle
with the scan tool test function open to this test (Figure 5) and will fill in a fuel trim chart of various engine loads making easy to see where your fuel trim issue lies. That is one of many dynamic tests this scan tool has to offer, as well as a catalytic converter test, volumetric efficiency test, and many more.
CONCLUSION
In closing, we have only scratched the surface of how to efficiently use the tools in your diagnostic inspection tool arsenal. I can give countless examples of the many ways to use these tools to our advantage. In this business, we definitely need the higher ground. Vehicles are not getting any easier to work on. However, I believe if we practice and utilize the tools to the best of our ability, there is not a problem out there that we cannot handle.
optimize them. Do not get discouraged. Slowly build this arsenal one tool at a time if you have to.
One more point to add before I get back to doing what I love to do, diagnosing vehicles, there is always something new to learn, vehicles are advancing at a rapid rate, and we have to do the same. You know that saying practice makes perfect? Well, we might never be perfect, but we can get pretty dang close.
Also, if you are just starting out in this business, it takes time to build this arsenal
and learn how to

STAHLWILLE 240/5 FastRatch Wrench Set
Reviewed by Randy Kaiser, service manager of Rost Motor, Inc. in Manson, Iowa.
Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?
A: This is a very unique tool set. It is a set of five ratcheting wrenches that are very unusual in design. They are spring-loaded and split apart to slide onto the nut that you’re trying to loosen or tighten. They are fairly thin in design, so they can get into tight spaces. Unlike other ratcheting wrenches, since they split apart, you can get them into spots even if you can’t get the wrench over the end of the bolt in question.
Q: How easy was it to use?
A: It’s actually very easy to use. You sim-
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The STAHLWILLE FastRatch Set, No. 96411005, is a set of five ratchet spanners made from tempered stainless steel. Its patented “opening ring” technology allows it to operate in tight or awkward spots that most ratcheting wrenches couldn’t access. An integrated closing spring allows the tools to consistently grip rounded nuts and screws, even when tension isn’t applied. All five sizes — 10mm, 11mm, 14mm, 17mm, and 19mm — come organized in a roll-up pouch. Circle 84 on card or click “PTEN e-inquiry” on VehicleServicePros.com
ply spread the two halves of the wrench apart and slip it onto the nut. You can use it to loosen a nut or flip it over to tighten the nut.
Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?
A: There is no setup involved. You simply take the wrenches out of the package that they came in and put them to work.
Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: The packaging is actually very nice. The wrench set came in a very nice roll pouch with individual pockets for each wrench.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used the wrenches to take off nuts in tight places. I also used them to move some adjusting nuts on a long shaft. They definitely saved time over an open-end wrench. I used them on a couple of nuts that had rounded off, and they worked surprisingly well.
Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool?
A: I have used various ratcheting wrenches before but never any that would spread apart to slip over the nut. That’s a pretty handy feature.
Q: What features did you like?
A: The wrenches are made in Germany
and seem to be very high quality. They spread apart easily but have good spring tension to hold onto the nut. There are five different sizes, and each wrench will fit a standard as well as a metric nut: 10mm - 3/8”, 11mm - 7/16”, 14mm9/16”, 17mm - 21/32”, 19mm - 3/4”. They are also fairly thin if you have limited room for access.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: It would be nice if the part of the jaws that grabbed the nut was straighter for a better bite instead of so rounded, but then it might not ratchet as well.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?
A: Probably a solid nine. They are very nice and definitely something different than I had ever used before. They are definitely a time-saver in the right situation.

sanding pads. The manual that came with the tool was easy to understand.
Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?
A: Stick the sanding disc on, put the battery in, and you’re ready to get to work.
Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: It came with two batteries, a charger, and some sanding pads to get started.

attempt with ease. In other words, it eliminated the frustration that would have resulted from trying to clumsily use bigger tools on precision work.
Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?
A: This tool set has made our shop more profitable by saving me valuable time on most jobs throughout the day as described above.
Q: What features did you like?
A: I liked the flag-themed foam storage tray. It made it easy to recognize at the end of the day if one of the tools in the set was missing.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: Perhaps one or two more precision tools could be added to the set. A small spoon-tip seal removal tool would be a worthy addition. Also, adding pocket clips to some of the tools included in this set (Phillips/slotted screwdrivers and pocket prybars) would be a convenient feature.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used the picks in this set for removing O-rings from oil filter housings as well as for removing the seal that helps secure valve stems to TPMS sensors. I used the flathead screwdrivers and angled pry bar to aid in disconnecting electrical connectors. I could see the pre-
cision Torx being useful down the road for the fasteners in side-view mirrors.
Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?
A: I have not used a previous version of the Mayhew version of this tool. I have used the Snap-on Instinct grip small picks (SGASA204CO) and small Channellock branded Torx screwdrivers (TP5A). The quality of the Mayhew set is on par with the other brands.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall?
A: I would rate this tool a 9.5. I like how comprehensive the set is; it provides the most commonly used precision tools in one place. Rating it 9.5 instead of 10, as I’m not sure how well the black oxide finish will hold up over time (i.e. rust if exposed to water).

with a foam insert to keep the sockets from falling out of their places when transferring the case from the job to the shelf or toolbox. There was also a “Thank you” card, which is a nice touch.
Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?
A: There’s no setup needed outside of opening the package.
Q: How easy was it to use?
A: This set was very easy to use. As easy as any socket, but the organization that the case offers makes it even easier to use.
Q: Was there a manual included?
A: No manual is included, and no manual is needed.
Q: What features did you like?
A: I like how comprehensive the set is. I have been a professional technician for a long time. I have a lot of hex and Torx sockets, but this kit includes several sizes that I didn’t have before. I like the organization that the case offers. It makes it easy to find what you need very quickly. The short or stubby hex and Torx bits can be used with either a
ratchet, socket, or wrench. This flexibility allows for a more low-profile approach when working in tight spaces.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: We used this kit for brake replacement services and removing underhood and undercar panels for undercar and underhood work. We also removed and reinstalled drain and fill bolts for fluid exchange services.
Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? How does it compare to other tools you’ve used like it?
A: I have used hex and Torx sockets for nearly three decades. There are way more size options in this set than any other that I’ve seen or owned. As mentioned earlier, the sheer size and organization of this kit is what sets it apart from the others.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall?
A: I rate it an eight only because any warranty claims would be less convenient than a similar tool purchased off a tool truck, and I’m a fan of Americanmade tools.

The one that felt right
Although this technician works out of his service truck most days, he’ll never give up on his customized jack-o’lantern-colored Macsimizer.
By Griffin Matis, Associate Editor
Originally, field service technician Korey Wong wasn’t looking for a new toolbox when he went to help a friend load up their new Mac Tools box. When distributor Serge Polish noticed Wong eyeing an orange 75” 14-Drawer Macsimizer, he unwrapped it and rolled it out into the morning sun. Wong already had a smaller Mac Tools box, but once he saw that larger version gleaming in the sun, he knew that he was going to have to switch it up. At first, he used it as his cart, but it eventually became his main stationary box after Polish had a deal on a green Macsimizer cart. His smaller, original Mac Tools box got traded to another technician, and the green and orange duo became his go-tos.
Since first buying the big box, he’s added lockers and a hutch, all of which are black to match the accents of the

orange box. He’s added shelves he made himself to the sides of both boxes. He also tweaked the ‘S’ on the Mac Tools logo on the 14-drawer’s front for a little extra customization, but it’s the color that’s his favorite feature.
“The orange is that bright orange, so it really pops in the shop. It definitely catches eyes,” he says.
FINDING THE RIGHT BOX
With a little over 13 years of experience in the industry, Wong’s learned that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to boxes. Though he primarily keeps his work tools and equipment in his
service truck nowadays, he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to toolboxes.
“I always tell people that ask me [my opinion] when they’re setting up their box or their service truck that it’s really not meant for me. It’s meant for you and how it flows for you,” he says. “If you’re going to be putting the stuff you use most at the bottom, that may not flow that good for you.”
For newer technicians looking for their first box, Wong has one major piece of advice – do your research. In the past, he says, he’s gone through countless boxes and setups to find one that works for him. Upgrading isn’t cheap, and moving all your equipment and tools back and forth gets old quickly.
“If you know you’re going to be a wrench hand the rest of your working career, go with the bigger box right off the bat,” he says. “It’ll save you a lot of money in the long run. That way, you can start putting in the tools that you want, the tools you can get, [and] get it organized the way that you want.”
MAKING THE MOST OF AN INVESTMENT
Although his setup and needs have changed over the years, he’s still happy with his orange and black box. If he were to ever return to using it as his primary workstation, he’d consider adding a smaller hutch and some organizers, but for now, it’s perfect as it is.
“I think it was just, you know, the one that felt right,” Wong says. “I felt that, as long as I’ve been in the industry, I’ve spent so much money on different boxes, and the amount of investment that I have into this one alone, I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not moving out.’”
