THOMPSON THOMPSON

Q. Can you share a project or initiative that embodies your commitment to making a positive impact in your field or community?

One of the opportunities I have embraced wholeheartedly is becoming a delegate in the All-World Beauties Pageant system as Mrs. Southwest USA 2024. As each delegate must have an advocacy platform, I was naturally drawn to advocate for gynecological cancer survivors but more specifically vulvar cancer awareness due to my own miraculous cancer free diagnosis in February of this year. I began to speak more about my experience and vulvar cancer awareness which opened my eyes to the fact that many people had never heard of that vulvar cancer or for that matter knew what a vulva was! Then there are those who are diagnosed with the disease who feel too ashamed and embarrassed to tell anyone of their diagnosis or reach out for emotional support. After all, there are no foundations or walks, no support groups or awareness campaigns for vulvar cancer.

This realization was the catalyst to becoming a transformational speaker, paving the way for opportunities to equip and educate adults (they have mothers, wives and daughters) to recognize the signs of gynecological cancers and see a gynecologist as soon as possible if they see any signs or symptoms. Knowing your body can save your life so I encourage those I speak to and with to get acquainted with their reproductive organs so they can quickly identify when something may be off.

I have experienced the shock on women’s faces when I tell my story and they immediately want everyone in their life to hear it to spread awareness. My mantra is: If I can save one woman from going through what I went through, my life will have been well lived!

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey?

In reflecting on my accomplishments, they would not have been possible without believing in my self -worth and this is the most powerful principle I live by now: “YOU ARE WORTHY!” There was a time when I allowed doubt and insecurity to cloud my perception of myself and my abilities. But through my faith and a deeper understanding of who God created me to be, I came to realize the inherent worth and value I possess as a Child of the King.

In other words, believing in my worth changed everything! It shifted my mindset from one of limitations to one of possibility. It gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone, pursue my dreams and embrace opportunities that once seemed out of reach. Knowing that I am fearfully and wonderfully made instilled in me a newfound confidence and resilience that has bought me to this very moment.

The belief in my own worth has been the catalyst for my achievements. It has enabled me to overcome obstacles, push past barriers, and persevere in the face of adversity. It has emboldened me to share my story with others, knowing my experiences have the power to inspire and uplift those who may be facing similar challenges.

In short, my journey taught me that believing in my worth changes everything. It opens doors, unlocks potential, and paves the way for a future filled with purpose and fulfillment. Through the lens of faith and self-worth, I have come to realize that with God, all things are possible, and there are no limits to what I can achieve.

Q. How did your family and support network contribute to your success, and how do you plan to celebrate this achievement with them?

I never realized how important your inner circle is to your success. I define success as walking in your purpose by using your God given gifts. I am fortunate that I have met some powerful women of faith that not only spoke life on the dry bones in my life but walked with me in my journey of overcoming my past traumas, self-doubt, and negative self- talk to gain inner harmony and self-worth. Honestly, I prayed for sister friends not just acquaintances. Just as iron sharpens iron these ladies truly underpin my success and the woman I have come to be. They have taught me to step out of my comfort zone with confidence so whether it is walking into a room, jumping on a zoom, or speaking in a crowded room I am genuinely confident and not just borrowing the confidence of others in the same space. Additionally, I’ve heard it said that you are most like the 5 people you are around the most and in my case that would be my family. My husband, children and parents have been invaluable in contributing to my success not only as a transformative speaker and author but as a person. My husband was my support behind closed doors on the days when chemotherapy treatments took my hair and radiation caused my energy to decline to that of a newborn. My kids and parents were instrumental during that time as well being available to support my husband and I during each of my diagnosis and various treatments over the last 7 years. I desire to make my family proud and for them to see how grateful I truly am for their love and support. Once I return to Houston, I plan on celebrating with my sister friends and family by having a private candle making experience and party. I believe memories are the best gift and that is the gift I plan to give.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what do you believe sets you apart and makes you deserving of Honors of Distinction?

My life has been marked by unique challenges, but I've always pursued personal growth and knowledge. Despite a tumultuous childhood, including being separated from my siblings and navigating foster care, I refused to let my past define me. I've worked tirelessly, starting from a young age delivering newspapers and providing childcare, demonstrating resilience and determination.

In my 37-year career with the Department of Defense, I reached the highest General Schedule level and led a major defense program worth $3.1 billion. I've traveled globally, mentoring African Americans and women to advance their careers, and volunteered extensively, receiving recognition for my community service, including the Exceptional Meritorious Civilian Service medal.

My dedication to serving others extends beyond my professional life. I've actively participated in community service events since 1984, locally and globally, and have organized successful initiatives like a diaper drive that benefited families in need.

My unique challenges, positive attitude, and unwavering commitment to service make me an exceptional candidate for the Honors of Distinction award. I've made significant contributions to my community and am dedicated to uplifting others, making me a suitable candidate for this honor.

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

Reflecting on my life's journey, I'm grateful for the support of mentors who helped me overcome challenges, from foster care to early parenthood. I cultivate gratitude daily through journaling and meditation, acknowledging the blessings in my life, big and small. Feedback is crucial for personal growth, and I welcome diverse perspectives to become a better person.

I'm committed to serving my community and embracing diversity, which fosters humility and empathy. Success isn't limited—it's attainable for everyone through curiosity and openness to learning. I prioritize humility and gratitude, finding true happiness in serving others and living a purposeful life beyond material achievements.

Q. What goals or aspirations do you have for the future, building upon the foundation laid by the Honors of Distinction recognition?

My passion for missionary work in Africa began in the late 80s as a member of the UMOJA African dance group, where I was deeply inspired by the continent's cultures and people. I'm committed to giving back to these communities that have given me so much. My recent visit to Ghana in 2023/2024 was a life-changing experience, deepening my understanding of African history and culture. I'm dedicated to preserving this heritage and ensuring the welfare of African children, who represent the continent's future.

In mid-August 2024, I'll embark on my first missionary trip to Ghana. My goal is to assist with food distribution, support children in getting to and from school, and provide them with activities. Though I've traveled extensively, this trip marks my dedication to African missions. I believe earning an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities will further inspire my commitment to missionary work in Africa, where I aim to positively impact lives and contribute to the continent's development. I'm eager and dedicated to this journey.

Q. How has your involvement in ministry or spiritual activities contributed to your sense of purpose and My work is my ministry. When I first committed myself to Christ, I had dreams and visions of the path I'm now walking. One vivid dream showed children in distress on a bridge, waiting for rescue—a scene now reflected in my career providing therapy for children with behavioral issues like autism and ADHD. The impact I've made exceeds my initial expectations. I'm confident in my path because it's God's work. Despite facing trials, including betrayal from those I trusted, I'm grateful for each challenge; they push me to grow. I see every obstacle as a test from God, strengthening me for each victory.

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

Maintaining humility is vital to me, and I do so by remaining thankful and grounded, acknowledging a divine power within. I see myself as a vessel for a larger purpose, serving a community and leaving a lasting impact. Despite my sensitivity and love bringing both joy and pain, I've learned that not everyone readily accepts love, often due to unfamiliarity or fear. My own mental health crisis years ago taught me resilience and a deeper purpose: to witness God's miracles and help others find healing. Having faced my own struggles, I can empathize with those whose pain has hardened their hearts, speaking to their needs and emotions. I believe anyone can change their life by changing their mindset. Staying humble allows me to connect with and serve those who need support.

Q. As you reflect on your journey to Honors of Distinction, what legacy or impact do you hope to leave in your field or community?

Receiving this honor means a lot to me. When I got the acceptance letter, I felt immense joy knowing my work had been recognized. Starting a business in 2018 to improve how special needs students are treated in urban schools was challenging. I lacked qualifications on paper, but supportive individuals believed in my vision and offered their expertise, opening doors for me.

These achievements came through sacrifice, including many lonely nights filled with sadness. But every new day is a gift, a chance to make the most of the time I've been given.

Acknowledging my own faults and showing myself grace has helped me see the best in others and meet them where they are. This honor is a step toward more opportunities to provide mental health and special education resources to families in need.

I aim to leave a legacy of change in my community by transforming how we approach mental health and self-care. This means challenging subpar conditions and improving access to resources. Education is power, and our community suffers without it. We must change this narrative by showing up for ourselves and our families, defining who we are, and making effective changes in our community.

Q. How did your family and support network contribute to your succeee, and how do you plan to celebrate

My family and support network contribute are major part of my success. They are my biggest cheerleaders. My family and support network cover me in prayer daily, check to see if I and my family are doing well and do wellness checks. As many of them often say; I help so many people on so many levels; they are here to support me. Being the parent of a special needs daughter and who has health challenges they often give me assistance and help her without me even asking. This is a great support and allows me to do other things I many need to do. My family loves to celebrate small and big accomplishments. I plan on having a big celebration and having them come and celebrate with me. We will celebrate the Great Things God is doing for me as well as for them. They are my village.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring individuals who aim to achieve similar academic or professional distinctions?

Some words of advice that I would give to aspiring individuals who aim to achieve similar academic or professional distinctions is “Never Give Up!” So many times, I felt overwhelmed and wanted to quit but then I had to remind myself that I was not only doing this for me but for my family, friends, and for others who looked up to me. I would always remind myself of the scripture: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Although times and days may get difficult; don’t give up. Keep the faith. Always remember a delay is not a denial. It’s always in God’s timing.

Q. What motivates you to actively engage in community service, and how do you balance this commitment with other responsibilities?

What motivates me to actively engage in community service is my love for people and being to serve and help others. My goal is to be a servant. Working with Cancer Survivors and their Caregivers is always a challenge both physically and emotionally because I get attached to those I work and support. I have learned each case is different and may require and totally different approach by me. I must be willing to share God’s love and compassion to everyone involved. The way I balance the commitment with other responsibilities is allowing others to support and help with the needs of the survivors and their caregivers. I also know I must do self-car for myself. If I am constantly pouring from my cup and never allowing it to be refilled I am not beneficial to anyone.

Q. Are there specific mentors or role models who have significantly influenced your path to achieving

As a young girl in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I fell in love with Kung-Fu movies, often watching them with my brothers. My father enrolled me in Karate classes at the YMCA, sparking my martial arts journey almost five decades ago. This journey led me to discover my inner warrior, guiding me through life's challenges with resilience. I'm grateful for my late father's gift of karate lessons, which still enrich my life today. Growing up in a family of pastors, my spiritual foundation was shaped during Sunday church rides with my grandparents, Reverend and Mrs. Sidney Conner. Their guidance planted seeds of faith and strength within me.

My childhood karate teacher, Judge Charles Warren, had a profound impact on me. Inspired by his service and dedication, I pursued law enforcement, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services with a focus on Criminal Justice from Springfield College while working as a beat cop in Milwaukee. I continued my education towards a Master’s Degree, following his example of excellence and service.

Q. How did your family and support network contribute to your success, and how do you plan to celebrate this achievement with them?

I was fortunate to have wonderful parents in a time when family was everything. I'm a blend of their personalities, strengths, and values. My mother, Dorothy Cole, a retired nurse, is still with us at 88 years young, a true blessing. I hope she can watch the ceremony live and share in my joy, especially since it's just before my birthday on June 7th, making it a doubly memorable celebration!

My proudest achievement is being a mother to two incredible children, DeMille and Tiara, both Academic Scholars and Honor Graduates of HBCU Clark Atlanta University. They've been my inspiration and support system, teaching me valuable lessons and contributing to my success. They've been my guiding light in dark times, and this victory will be a win for all of us. I'm thrilled and grateful that they'll be by my side on this special day.

Q. How do you stay motivated and focused during challenging times, ensuring continued excellence in your pursuits?

I start each day with prayer and thanksgiving, seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit. During tough times, I check in with my mind, will, and emotions to realign my spirit. This might involve fasting or spending time alone with God to recharge and gain clarity. I listen to motivational messages and guard what enters my mind, knowing the enemy tries to deceive during vulnerable moments. Speaking life over myself and situations, even when circumstances are tough, requires faith. I seek prayer support from trusted believers, often including my children. Nature walks, exercise, and practicing my craft release positive endorphins, lifting my spirits and sharpening my focus. Surrounding myself with positive people who support, encourage, and correct me, while also enjoying laughter, helps maintain my energy and peace These intentional practices have proven effective for me time and again.

Q. What emotions or thoughts ran through your mind when you first learned about receiving the Honors of

When I learned that I was receiving the Honors of Distinction, a range of emotions ran through my mind… happiness, pride, a sense of accomplishment and humbleness. Receiving this honor is a big boost in selfconfidence and motivation to continue to live in my life’s purpose. It is acknowledgement of my efforts of compassion and works of charity throughout my life. I am deeply humbled by this award. It encourages and inspires me to want to do more for the marginalized and disenfranchised.

Q. How do you stay motivated and focused during challenging times, ensuring continued excellence in your pursuits?

In today’s fast paced, dynamic, complex world, staying motivated and focused during challenging times can be a true test of one’s success. Staying motivated and focused during challenging times is critical for maintaining continued excellence and being effective. In my professional and personal life, I employ several strategies that allow me to stay on track and not be dissuaded. Most importantly, I define my intent and set clear goals, which I break into smaller manageable tasks. This gives me a clear sense of direction. One of the undeniable essential aspects of maintaining effectiveness is staying organized. As a co-author for the book, The Essential Soft Skills for Effective Leadership, Steps to leading with Grace, I contributed a chapter on the Importance of Organization. Being organized aids in providing clarity, direction, and alignment. It helps me to identify risks and develop mitigation plans to minimize impact. Next, I believe in surrounding myself with supportive friends, family members and colleagues who will encourage me when times get tough and will help me celebrate any achievements, no matter how small. Finally, I maintain a positive mindset, focusing on progress, not setbacks.

Q. How does your ministry or spiritual practice influence your decision-making in professional and personal realms?

My faith and spirituality are at the forefront of my professional and personal life. They drive how interact with and treat other humans. I truly believe that our purpose as man is to minister God’s word, not just with our words, but also through love, care, and compassion. Through prayer and meditation, I am able maintain this focus with clarity. This enhances my decision making by allowing me to approach choices with a clear mind. These practices, which involve a bit of self-reflection and increased self-awareness, help me to understand my values and motivation. This facilitates alignment of my decision-making with values, motivations, and goals. Also, my spiritual practice emphasizes empathy, compassion, and understanding towards others and forces me to make ethical considerations in my decision making. Through my faith and spirituality, I can navigate both my professional and personal life with greater wisdom and intention.

Q. How has your perspective on leadership evolved, and what role do you see yourself playing as an influential figure in your field?

My perspective on leadership in the mental health field has evolved significantly over time. Therefore, I have a deep understanding of the complexities and nuances of mental health issues. The importance of evidencebased practices that include compassion, inclusivity, and innovative leadership is needed.

Initially, my view of leadership in mental health was primarily clinical, focusing on diagnosis treatment. Over time, I have come to appreciate the importance of a holistic approach that integrates social, cultural, and environmental factors. Effective leadership now means promoting wellness in all aspects of life, not just treating symptoms. As an influential figure in the mental health field, I envision my role encompassing two key areas; Community Engagement and Advocacy and Policy Work. I will continue to build strong connections with communities to understand their needs and provide support where it is essential. I see myself playing a role in community outreach, ensuring that mental health services are accessible and tailored to the unique needs of different populations. Furthermore, I see myself collaborating with policymakers, organizers, and communities and being actively involved in shaping policies that promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and improve access to care.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey? Compassion and empathy have been foundational in my work. Understanding and sharing the feelings of others have allowed me to connect deeply with individuals, providing meaningful support and care. These values are crucial in building trust and fostering a therapeutic environment where people feel understood and valued.

Upholding integrity and honesty in all interactions and decisions has been critical. Being transparent, ethical, and accountable builds trust and credibility. These principles ensure that my actions and recommendations are always in the best interest of those I serve.

Q. What philanthropic causes are close to your heart, and how have you contributed to these initiatives?

Mental health advocacy is my life's work. I Incorporate practices like prayer, meditation, mindfulness, and spiritual reflection into mental health support. Encourage individuals to use these practices as part of their daily routine. Develop programs that combine mental health counseling with spiritual guidance. These can include therapy sessions, spiritual counseling, and workshops that address both mental and spiritual health. By integrating ministry and spiritual engagement with mental health advocacy, you can offer a unique and powerful form of support that addresses the whole person, fostering deep and lasting healing in individuals and communities.

Q. What emotions or thoughts ran through your mind when you were first approached about receiving the

When I was first approached about the Honors of Distinctions program, I had mixed feelings. Those feelings were short lived as I became overwhelmed by the gratitude and excitement I felt about the nomination. It’s always a great feeling to be acknowledged for your hard work even though there are times when you question whether you've accomplished the mission. After speaking to several colleagues, I was reminded of the many hours, over the last 22 years, that I dedicated to programs that I established in the schools and the community. This seemed like the perfect time to accept acknowledgement and celebration for the work completed and work still in progress. Service to others, especially young people, is a trait that was deeply embedded in me by my parents. I continue to strive for excellence as I seek to further impact the lives of others. I am so honored to have been selected for this prestigious honor.

Q. Are there specific mentors or role models who have significantly influenced your path to achieving Honors of Distinction?

My former principal was a great leader and an advocate for positive experiences for students. I admired her and wanted to play a role in helping provide students with opportunities that would impact their lives. She approached me about the increasing number of boys being sent to her office to be disciplined for what seemed to be minor behavioral offenses. She observed that I had a stern but effective way of dealing with children and wanted me to engage the boys in constructive activities that would redirect their energies. I explored many options and decided that singing might be a solution. I appreciated her support and the confidence that she had in me to empower them to reach their full potential. The experiences I provided were basically designed to establish routines and habits that would lead to their personal achievement success.

Another mentor was a longtime friend who was very knowledgeable and highly respected in education and the community. I often referred to him as the smartest man on earth and I knew that if I needed an honest opinion, I could count on him. He later assisted me in planning and implementing a program that would benefit students while providing service to the community. He was an advocate for excellence and helping others to achieve their goals.

Q. Can you share a defining moment in your academic or professional journey that led to this prestigious recognition?

In 1998, I organized The Boys Choir of Powhatan, a much-needed outlet to foster positive self-esteem and to build confidence. The program was to serve as a means to increase the self-esteem and academic achievements of young African American males, best described as “Exploring Possibilities through Travel and Song”, the group’s theme. I planned and successfully completed 19 educational tours with the choir, visiting more than 18 states and 28 cities. To see the growth and excitement of these young boys was very rewarding as they visited schools, nursing homes, veteran hospitals, churches, museums, and professional sports events. What a rewarding journey.

Q. What emotions or thoughts ran through your mind when you first learned about receiving the Honors of Distinction?

Words can hardly express the mix of excitement and relief I feel. Honestly, the opportunity came my way a year or two ago, but I doubted myself and let it slip by, feeling unworthy. I was guilty of holding myself back, a form of self-sabotage. However, fate had other plans. The opportunity resurfaced this year, and though I almost talked myself out of it again, I took a leap of faith. And I'm grateful I did! It was nerve-wracking yet exhilarating to go through the process, but when I got the acceptance email, it felt like my heart was dancing. I shared the news with my loved ones, feeling surreal yet motivated to achieve even more with this Honors of Distinction. I'm ready to dream bigger than ever before!

Q. How did your family and support network contribute to your success, and how do you plan to celebrate this achievement with them?

I'm eternally grateful for my family and friends who've been a constant source of positivity throughout my journey. My husband deserves a special mention for his unwavering support and willingness to embrace my ideas, even the crazy ones. He's always by my side, and I adore him for it. My mother's endless encouragement has instilled in me the belief that I'm capable of anything. With their support, I stay grounded even during tough times. They'll continue to play a crucial role as I pursue my God-given goals. I look forward to celebrating this achievement with them, perhaps with some music and sweets, and definitely with a party to express my love and gratitude.

Q. How has collaboration and teamwork played a role in your achievements, and how do you foster a collaborative spirit in your endeavors?

I adore the idea of collaborations and teamwork! They're essential for reaching our highest potential. Every journey involves seeking advice, inspiration, or simply the presence of others. Allowing others to contribute and doing the same creates a powerful dynamic. Teamwork leads to collective success, where both leaders and followers play crucial roles. Embracing different perspectives enhances our achievements. I believe in sharing God's gifts with others, hence my tagline "Share the Shine." Collaborations have always been a priority for me, whether in my career or business. You don't have to go it alone; teamwork truly makes the dream work.

Q. How has your involvement in community activities contributed to your personal and professional growth?

Throughout my academic and professional journey, the most valuable lesson I've learned is the importance of resilience. I've faced numerous obstacles, from academic setbacks to career hurdles, and each time I've had to pick myself up, learn, and keep moving forward. This resilience has not only shaped my professional trajectory but has also taught me that success isn't a straight line; it's a journey that requires patience, perseverance, and adaptability.

Q. What motivates you to actively engage in community service, and how do you balance this commitment with other responsibilities?

My drive to engage in community service comes from a deep-rooted sense of empathy and connection. I grew up in a small town where neighbors supported each other through thick and thin, and I saw firsthand the difference that kindness can make. This ingrained in me a belief that we all have a responsibility to uplift those around us. Community service is my way of giving back, creating connections, and ensuring that others feel supported and seen, just as I was.

Balancing this commitment with other responsibilities can be challenging, but I make it work through careful time management and recognizing my priorities. I remind myself that giving time and energy to community causes isn't a burden; it's a privilege. By integrating service into my schedule, I can ensure that both my personal and professional lives are fulfilling.

Q. What would you say is the most valuable lesson you've learned during your academic or professional

Resilience has taught me to view challenges not as barriers, but as invitations to grow stronger and become more adept at navigating the complexities of life. This lesson was crystallized during my time in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, where I learned the true strength of community and the impact of collective effort under extreme circumstances. These experiences reinforced my resolve to face each challenge with determination and to always find a pathway forward, no matter how difficult the situation might seem

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

Recognition and success are not just personal achievements; they are collective victories that reflect the hard work of many. I have learned to stay humble by constantly acknowledging the contributions of my team, volunteers, and community partners. Expressing gratitude regularly, whether through public acknowledgment or personal notes of thanks, helps me remember that every achievement is built on a foundation of mutual support and collaboration. This practice of gratitude not only keeps me grounded but also strengthens my relationships and deepens my sense of community.

Q. What motivates you to actively engage in community service and how do you balance this commitment with other responsibilities?

Beyond my initiatives, I strive to be a visible and accessible example of what is possible when you commit to your passions and work towards the betterment of others. By engaging with my audience on social media, I share not just successes but also the struggles and the learnings that come from them. This transparency in my journey is meant to inspire others to embrace their own challenges and aspirations with hope and determination. I believe that by living my values out loud, I can inspire others to believe in the possibility of change and the power of dedicated effort.

Q. Can you share a personal philosophy or mantra that has guided you on your path to Honors of Distinction?

Personal Philosophy or Mantra: "You are your best investment" is a reminder that personal development is an endless journey worthy of time and effort. This mantra has driven me to pursue a well-rounded education and to seek continuous personal growth through certifications in diverse fields like Style Coaching, Wellness, Mindfulness, and Reiki. It encapsulates the idea that the more I grow, the more I can offer to others. Living by this mantra, I aim to be a living example that investing in oneself is the cornerstone of making a meaningful impact in the world. By fostering this belief, I hope to empower others to invest in themselves, discover their purpose, and achieve greatness in their own lives.

Q. Can you share a project initiative that embodies your commitment to making a positive impact in your

Raising Our Daughters Foundation, is working in collaboration with the Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity, for The 2024 Woman Build Project. This project is a shining example of our commitment to making a positive impact in both our field and community. This initiative, aims to provide Affordable housing and sustainable quality of life for 17 families in need. Stable housing is not just a basic need, but a foundation for success, providing security, stability, and a sense of belonging. In essence, the 2024 Woman Build Project represents more than just construction; it symbolizes our unwavering commitment to building a better, more inclusive

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values and principles have been instrumental in your journey?

Staying true to who I am, keeping God first in ALL things. Showing up authentically as myself and leading with compassion has been instrumental to me to show up as a servant leader. Making a positive impact is critical to my journey as a Black woman. I strive to create meaningful change because I am going to leave a lasting legacy. Empowerment for me, has been about recognizing my self worth, owning my voice, and advocating for myself and others. In a world where Black women often are made to dim our light or shrink ourselves. I use my voice for good because I have been called and I am equipped to serve God’s Kingdom. I am the voice of the voiceless, and I have decided to never be silenced again.

Q. What emotions or thoughts ran through your mind when you first learned about receiving the honors of distinction?

Receiving this distinguished honor is personally a dream come true for me. Growing up, my path was far from perfect. I have lived through and experienced several traumatic events that hindered my progress and could have led me down a destructive path, had I not had positive influences in my life, that believed in me, when I questioned my self worth and value at times. This achievement is confirmation that an unwed, teenage, young black mother, born and raised in the hood, can one day grow up and be someone brave, important, and make a positive impact in the world. I was able to achieve this, because I never stopped believing that one day, I would reach my educational aspirations, just like how my husband and I, ensured our children had the privilege to pursue the educational opportunities that we ourselves were not given. Like most mothers, of course I want to make my children and my family are proud. But for once in my life, I am fighting for my own educational dreams that I have always wanted to pursue, as a younger woman. My hope is that by becoming DR. Shauna L. Weatherspoon, I will empower other girls, women and families around the world, to continue to fight for their dreams and believe that they are worthy to pursue their educational dreams. The most important work to me is the Raising Our Daughters Foundation. We work to empower young girls, women of all ages and families from every walk of life and backgrounds. This award confirms to me that through our scholarships offered to our youth and entrepreneurs, we will be able to bring more resources, connections and sisterhood predominantly to girls, women and families.

Q. How has your perspective on leadership evolved, and what role do you see yourself playing as an influential figure in your field?

My perspective on leadership has transformed over the years from viewing it as a position of authority to recognizing it as a platform for service and empowerment. Initially, I believed leadership was about making decisions and guiding others. However, through my academic journey and professional experience, I've come to understand that effective leadership involves listening, empathy, and fostering a culture of collaboration. As I progressed in my field, I realized that leadership is about creating opportunities for others to excel. It's about developing a vision that inspires and aligns with shared values, and then enabling a team to work toward that vision. I strive to be the kind of leader who encourages open communication, embraces diversity, and supports continuous learning. In my role as an influential figure, I see myself as a mentor and advocate for innovation. I want to use my position to challenge the status quo, drive positive change, and nurture the next generation of leaders. My focus is on creating an environment where creativity is encouraged, and where individuals feel empowered to contribute their unique skills and ideas.

Develop a growth mindset, where failures are seen as learning opportunities, and keep pushing forward. Third, build a strong network. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and support your goals. Engage with peers, mentors, and industry professionals. Your network will provide guidance, feedback, and opportunities that can be invaluable as you progress in your career. Finally, remember to maintain balance. While dedication is essential, take time to nurture your well-being and relationships. Achieving distinction is a marathon, not a sprint, and it's crucial to enjoy the journey.

Q. How has your perspective on leadership evolved, and what role do you see yourself playing as an influential figure in your field?

My perspective on leadership has not remained stagnant throughout my journey as a survivor, advocate, and entrepreneur. It has evolved, undergoing a profound transformation. I've come to understand that authentic leadership is not about personal glory, but about empowering others and creating platforms for change. As the founder and CEO of Interactive Advocacy, I've embraced a leadership style that prioritizes empathy, innovation, and resilience. My role as an influential figure in violence prevention and survivor empowerment is not just about making a difference, but about inspiring others to join the movement for positive change. By leveraging my own experiences and the power of storytelling, I aim to create a ripple effect of transformation, encouraging individuals and communities to take action and become leaders in their own right.

Q. Can you share a personal philosophy or mantra that has guided you on your path to Honors of Distinction?

My guiding philosophy is not just a set of words, but a deeply personal belief that has shaped my journey and guided me towards my purpose. It's encapsulated in two powerful mantras. The first, 'I will not allow the trauma that has infected me to affect me,' is a constant reminder that our experiences, no matter how painful, do not define us. Instead, we have the power to shape our narratives and use our struggles as catalysts for growth and change. This philosophy has been the driving force behind my work with Interactive Advocacy, as we empower survivors to reclaim their voices, own their stories, and become agents of change in their communities. For example, when faced with challenges, I always remind myself of this mantra, which helps me stay focused on the positive outcomes we can achieve.

The second mantra, "Embrace the GLOW," represents a transformative mindset that has guided me on my path to Honors of Distinction. GLOW stands for Growing through adversity, Leading with compassion, Owning your story, and being a Warrior for change. This philosophy emphasizes the importance of resilience, empathy, authenticity, and courage in the face of challenges. It has been a constant reminder to prioritize self-care, lead with heart, and never stop fighting for what I believe in. Together, these mantras have provided a robust framework for my personal and professional growth, guiding me toward a life of purpose, impact, and distinction. For example, when I faced a personal setback, I used the GLOW mindset to bounce back stronger and more determined. Professionally, this mindset has helped me lead my team through difficult times and make tough decisions with compassion and authenticity.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey?

Reflecting on my accomplishments, I realize that several core values and principles, which we share, have been instrumental in my journey. First and foremost is the value of empathy. As a survivor myself, I deeply understand the long-term impacts of trauma and the importance of creating safe, supportive spaces for healing. Empathy has been the foundation of our work with Interactive Advocacy, informing every aspect of our programs and initiatives. Another critical principle is innovation. To create lasting change, we must be willing to think outside the box, challenge traditional approaches, and embrace new ideas. This has driven the development of our groundbreaking programs, such as the "DON'T JUST STAND THERE!" training series and the "NO WORDS" production. Finally, the principle of collaboration has been essential to our success. I've learned that no one can drive change alone and that true impact comes from working together, building partnerships, and leveraging our collective strengths. By embodying these values and principles, we have been able to transform our pain into purpose and create a platform for others to do the same.

Q. What challenges did you face along the way, and how did you overcome them to achieve this distinction?

Facing the challenges of illness before and during this pivotal moment was no easy task. Despite being in four different hospitals, I was determined to make my interview happen before the deadline was up . The night before going back to the hospital, I mustered every ounce of strength I had left, pushing through the excruciating pain. Getting dressed, applying a touch of makeup, and putting my trust in God to see me through, I knew this time was different. This was a moment for myself, where I couldn't hide my true feelings. Embracing my vulnerability and accepting that it was okay to not be okay, I stepped into the situation authentically, without a script to shield me. In that raw and unfiltered moment, I discovered a new level of empowerment and resilience within myself.

Q. As you reflect on your journey to Honors of Distinction, what legacy or impact do you hope to leave in your field or community?

Success is not just a personal achievement but a collective effort that stems from empowering and aiding those in our midst to become the best versions of themselves. Envision a world where mutual support and encouragement are the norm, leading to a more harmonious and prosperous society for all.In the pursuit of success, it is essential to recognize that true achievement is not solely about individual accomplishments but also about the impact we have on others. By fostering a culture of support and empowerment, we can inspire those around us to unleash their full potential and contribute positively to our communities. Imagine the transformative power of a world where collaboration, compassion, and mutual aid are the cornerstones of progress, creating a harmonious and thriving global society.

Q. What philanthropic causes are close to your heart, and how have you contributed to these initiatives?

Children in foster care face unique challenges and often lack the stability and support that many others take for granted. This is why I am deeply passionate about supporting them and being a strong advocate for their needs. I believe that every child deserves a chance to thrive and reach their full potential, regardless of the circumstances they were born into. By offering guidance, support, and a listening ear, I aim to empower these children to overcome their obstacles and build a brighter future for themselves. My dedication to helping children in foster care extends beyond just their childhood years; I am committed to walking alongside them as they navigate the complexities of growing up and transitioning into young adulthood. It is my mission to show these children that they are not alone, that they are valued, and that they have the strength within them to achieve their dreams.

I spearheaded a duffle bag drive initiative through The Seven Figure Boss Summit ® with a mission to ensure that no child in foster care in the state of Texas has to endure the indignity of having their belongings put in a trash bag. This project has evolved into a law that mandates proper storage and transportation of personal items for these children. It brings me immense joy to see the impact of this initiative, knowing that it is making a tangible difference in the lives of these vulnerable children. At my spa, we have sponsored makeovers for children, with a special focus on those with high-textured hair. Our goal is to not only provide a fun and uplifting experience for these kids but also to educate both the children and their foster care parents on proper maintenance and self-love practices. By offering these makeovers, we aim to boost the children's self-esteem and confidence while also equipping their caregivers with the knowledge and skills needed to care for their unique hair textures. It is our way of promoting self-care, self-acceptance, and empowerment within the foster care community.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey?

I have always believed that discipline, dedication, and consistency are three very important success principles and habits that leads to success in life. As a military man, my father instilled these 3 principles in us and as a result, the habit was created since I was a boy. These 3 success habits were always subconsciously at work in everything that I did so, on the days when I was sick or tired or just did not feel like being successful, the principles pushed me to move beyond my feelings to take action daily.

Another principle I developed was staying goal oriented. To be goal oriented, you must, of course have goals. I have always been a ‘finisher’ as I never started something and not see it to its completion. Setting goals and focusing on the end result as the reward, was always my motivation to keep going, whether I felt like it or not.

As a result, everything that I have set out to accomplish has been a success. After every accomplished goal, another one is set. Because of this, I am forever in a constant state of growth.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring individuals who aim to achieve similar academic or professional distinctions?

Always remember that advice is only advice. Unless it is acted upon, it is totally useless. With that being said, I would like to share the following:

2.

1. Be sure to have clarity when setting your goals because if you are unclear about what you wish to achieve, you will set unclear goals which leads to unclear success which is an oxymoron. It does not exist.

3.

Invest in your mindset because a success mindset is everything. The correct mindset will give you the right attitude and attitude is the difference-maker.

Always invest in yourself, based on what you want to accomplish. Never be the smartest person in the room because you cannot teach yourself what you do not know. Invest in your education at every level and apply action to that education.

Q. How do you stay motivated and focused during challenging times, ensuring continued excellence in your pursuits?

Staying motivated and focused during challenging times is a habit that is developed over time. Life will give you many experiences to practice so I encourage my mentees to look forward to challenges as difficulties, when encountered with the correct mindset, brings growth, knowledge, and experience.

Challenges are a part of success, and it is a great opportunity to exercise what I call being solution focused. Instead of focusing on the challenge, I teach people to focus on the solution. Focusing on finding solutions instead of stressing on the problem helps us to keep a good attitude and develop your critical thinking abilities. It also reduces stress. Over time, when this habit is well developed, I find that when challenges come, instead of stressing over the issue, the brain automatically goes into solution-focused mode.

I also teach that challenges make us well experience teachers once we are sure to learn from them. This way, if we happen to encounter the same challenge again, we are already equipped with the solution because we learned from it previously. We are also able to teach others from our experiences.

Q. How do you define success beyond academic or professional achievements, considering holistic well-

True success encompasses holistic well-being, rooted in spiritual fulfillment, physical health, emotional awareness, and mental wellness. Cultivating rich social connections and balance across work, leisure, and personal pursuits enhances overall happiness. Living authentically, pursuing meaningful goals, and making a positive impact lead to joy and fulfillment in becoming the best version of ourselves.

Q. Can you share a specific experience where your faith or spiritual beliefs guided you through a challenging situation?

My previous employment experience highlighted how my spiritual beliefs shape my decisions, especially in tough times. Despite discovering a pay discrepancy, I reported it honestly, facing complications in resolving the issue. When confronted by senior leaders without support, my faith gave me strength. I stood firm, refusing to be intimidated. Though disappointed and isolated, my faith anchored me, reminding me I wasn't alone. Trusting in a higher power, I found the courage to seek justice and ultimately move on to new opportunities aligned with my values.

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

Receiving this honor of distinction is deeply meaningful to me. It validates the efforts I've poured into my work, particularly in reshaping how special needs students are supported in urban school districts. Starting my small business in 2018 was a daunting journey, lacking formal qualifications but fueled by a strong vision. Fortunately, I found support from qualified individuals who believed in my mission, opening doors that seemed closed.

These achievements came with sacrifices, including countless lonely nights filled with doubt. However, each day is a precious opportunity to make a difference. Recognizing my own flaws and extending grace to myself has enabled me to see the best in others and meet them where they are.

This honor is a stepping stone towards expanding my mission to provide mental health and special education resources to more families in need. I aspire to leave a legacy of change in my community, advocating for improved mental health discourse and accessibility to resources. Education is paramount, and it's our responsibility to ensure equitable access to it. This journey begins with self-reflection, defining our values, and taking action to effect positive change in our communities.

Q. Are there specific mentors or role models who have significantly influenced your path to achieving I do have a handful of mentors and role models who have definitely helped me along this journey. One that I would like to highlight is the late Dr Paula Miller. Since I’ve met her in 2023, she has shown me that it does not matter how things look, if it is truly for me, then God will always open the door. And in knowing that her time left on earth was short, God allowed her to see enough in me, to believe in me enough to nominate me for such a prestigious award. So, this journey for me is definitely one that I will not forget and will be forever grateful.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey?

As I look back over the path that I am on, I understand that being a servant first and having a heart for people has played a huge role in my principles and foundation. I also have Proverbs 3:5-6, which says “Trust the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct the path. Also, being able to be Transparent and Truthful. We cannot pull someone out of a hole we have never fallen into.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what do you believe sets you apart and makes you deserving of Honors of distinction?

As I look back, I see an example of a Resilient woman! Having gone through sexual abuse at an early age, to being a single mother of 4 by the time I was 23, from being homeless with my children, to being in different abusive relationships. However, being able to overcome all those obstacles and being an example to my children and them witnessing that it does not matter how your journey starts, but rather it is how you continue and change the narrative that people have placed on you. I have been able to start my own business and to help many by allowing them to see my authentic self and showing them the scars that have made me the woman that I am today. Were those times hard, yes, they were. I needed all of that in order to make it to where I am now. Knowing the value of where God has brought me from and the value, I have in order to change another life moving forward.

Q. How has collaboration and teamwork played a role in your achievements, and how do you foster a collaborative spirit in your endeavors?

Collaboration and teamwork have been fundamental to my achievements throughout my life. In the military, both in the Navy and Army Reserve, the essence of success was predicated on effective teamwork and the collective effort of all involved. This ethos extended to my role at the Social Security Administration, where working closely with others ensured that benefits were administered effectively. To foster a collaborative spirit, I always emphasize the importance of each team member’s contributions, ensuring everyone feels valued and heard. This approach not only promotes unity but also encourages a culture where all members are committed to the success of the collective, mirroring the camaraderie and mutual support I experienced in the military.

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

My faith and the memory of my late wife, Quandra, are constant reminders of the values that ground me— humility and gratitude. Each achievement and recognition I receive is a testament to my efforts and the support and belief others have invested in me, particularly my angel above, Quandra. She always believed in my potential, even when challenges such as dyslexia made personal achievements seem daunting. This perspective keeps me grounded and thankful for each opportunity and accomplishment, recognizing them as blessings and results of communal support and divine favor.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what do you believe sets you apart and makes you deserving of Honors of Distinction?

What sets me apart is my resilience in the face of adversity and my commitment to lifelong learning and service. From a young age, facing challenges such as dyslexia and later the vicissitudes of war, I learned the importance of perseverance. Returning to school later in life to complete my degrees in Criminal Justice while raising three children as a widower and serving my community and country reflects a dedication to personal growth and civic duty. My journey is one of overcoming, continuous contribution to society, and an unwavering faith that guides my moral compass. These experiences define my character and highlight the distinctive impact of my life’s work, making me worthy of such honors.

Q. Can you share a personal philosophy or mantra that has guided you on your path to Honors of Distinction?

I DECIDED to Succeed: In my book, "I DECIDED: Proven Steps to Move from Resolution to Execution," I empower individuals who, like me, struggle to turn their resolutions into reality. Born from my own challenges in achieving goals, the acrostic propelled me from mere intentions to tangible results—a tool I believe can benefit others as well. Embracing this creed transformed my approach, liberating me to pursue goals with newfound determination. I embody Diligence, Excellence, Confidence, Integrity, Discipline, Enthusiasm, and Dedication—values that guide me in achieving resolutions. This creed serves as my compass, empowering me to transition from resolution to execution successfully. I share it in hopes of offering others the same sense of empowerment and fulfillment.

Q. As you reflect on your journey to Honors of Distinction, what legacy or impact do you hope to leave in your field or community?

Generations Yet to Be Born: In the pursuit of fulfilling our purpose, we often forget that it's more about God than ourselves. Our gifts, talents, and resources are meant for His glory. Understanding that our existence transcends personal desires allows us to leave a legacy that enriches lives for generations. This legacy isn't solely defined by our actions, but by our moral convictions and surrender to God's will. My aspiration is to leave behind a legacy of love, grounded in the profound essence of the two greatest commandments: to love God and to love others as I love myself. With each endeavor, my hope is for God to utilize them not only for this current generation but also for those yet to come. Every action is a prayer for its ripple effect, touching not just this era but generations yet to be born.

Q. How has collaboration and teamwork played a role in your achievements, and how do you foster a collaborative spirit in your endeavors?

Purposeful Connections: Bridges carry us to new destinations, but they don't reach there themselves. Our life's purpose is often linked to someone who acts as a bridge to a broader landscape. Each of us is at a different stage in realizing our purpose, but the seeds we carry have the power to transform not only our lives but also others'. Connections demonstrate that our purposes are interconnected. Our collective and individual fulfillment relies on this interconnection. Purposeful relationships propel us toward our potential and destiny. Some last a lifetime, while others are temporary. Regardless, they serve to drive us and our collaborators and team members towards achieving illimitable success.

Q. In what ways has your understanding of your field of study or profession deepened throughout your journey?

As a child, becoming an award-winning nutrition-based weight loss coach was never in my plans. But in 2008, after a stressful divorce led to weight gain and low self-confidence, I knew I needed to change. Two years of relentless exercise and dieting only yielded minimal results, leaving me desperate for a better solution. Discovering the importance of nutrition was the turning point. With the guidance of a coach, I learned that sustainable weight loss is not about fad diets or extreme restrictions but about proper nutrition. As I transformed my own body, friends sought my help, leading me to inadvertently become a coach alongside my 9-to-5 job.

Passion drove me to leave my 18-year technology career to focus on helping women lose weight without misery. Since discovering my calling in 2010, I've continued to deepen my knowledge, earning certification from Harvard Medical School in 2019. My commitment to personal growth has not only enhanced my expertise but also enabled me to deliver exceptional results for my clients.

While academia never motivated me, pursuing my passion has made me a dedicated learner and an outstanding coach, fueled by what truly ignites my soul.

Q. How do you define success beyond academic or professional achievements, considering holistic wellbeing and fulfillment?

Success means different things to different people. For me, it's not about material wealth or status symbols. It's about authenticity, autonomy, purpose, self-expression, and balance.

Authenticity means staying true to yourself and your values, without pretending to be someone you're not. Autonomy is having the freedom to make your own decisions, without external pressure. Purpose is pursuing meaningful goals that resonate with you. Self-expression is openly sharing yourself with the world. Balance means prioritizing what matters most to you, rather than conforming to societal norms.

Success, to me, is living life on my terms, following my heart, and staying true to my beliefs, even if it means making unconventional choices. Despite leaving a high-paying tech job to pursue coaching, I've found fulfillment and joy. Success isn't about material possessions; it's about living authentically and unapologetically.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring individuals who aim to achieve similar academic or professional distinctions?

For those embarking on their professional journeys or considering a shift, here's my advice:

Have a clear vision: A strong vision prevents wasted energy and keeps you focused on your goals. It provides motivation and direction.

Be resilient: Success requires dedication and perseverance. Don't give up when faced with challenges; push through and learn from them.

Strive for excellence: Give your best in everything you do. This sets you apart and propels you further in your field.

Lead by example: Demonstrate the qualities you expect from others. Lead from the front and inspire through your actions.

Stay curious: Continuous learning is essential for growth. Remain open to new ideas and actively seek opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills.

Q. How did your family and support network contribute to your success, and how do you plan to celebrate this achievement with them?

GOD, my family, and support system have contributed tremendously to my success. I would not be where I am right now if it wasn’t for GOD’s grace and mercy over my life. I wanted to give up years ago, but he had a plan for my life and I’m so glad he loves me in spite of. My wonderful husband for over 10 years, Adrian, has truly been a blessing in my life. I don’t give him enough credit, but he is my calm, protector, and best friend. I thank GOD for him every single day. My mother…my mother is a strong black woman who sacrificed too much to make sure my brother and I were provided for. My mother is the definition of a warrior. I grind so hard because I never want my mom to ever worry about anything ever again. I want her to know that I have her back now like she had my back growing up.

Q. Are there specific projects or initiatives that you are particularly proud of, which contributed to your Honors of Distinction recognition?

I’m so proud that my husband and I were able to give ECPI University $10,000 to help other students who may be struggling with outside factors such as shelter, food, transportation so they can concentrate on their studies. When I attended ECPI University, I was a caregiver to my mom who had Dementia and unfortunately, we were almost evicted. The reason I said almost evicted because my instructors took their own money to ensure my mom and I had a place to stay while I attended school…not once but twice. If it wasn’t for my instructors, I don’t know if I would have been able to continue nursing school. Giving back to my community means everything to me and I’m honored to receive this prestigious recognition.

Q. What would you say is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned during your academic or professional journey?

To be honest, the most valuable lesson I have learned during this journey is to remain humble, treat others the way you want to be treated and to always keep GOD first in everything you do. You may not know how your life is going to go, but if you work hard, and never give up, you can and will achieve whatever you put your mind to. GOD created us all to be Queens and Kings!

Q. What motivates you to actively engage in community service and how do you balance this commitment with other responsibilities?

My motivation to actively engage in community service derives from my genuine care and compassion for people. Knowing that my contribution helps make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and seeing the impact it makes on the community is very rewarding. Community service allows me to connect with people from all walks of life within my community, it gives me a sense of self-fulfillment to continue to serve others as I have served this country.

Balancing my commitment to serve with my other responsibilities is about prioritizing what matters most and setting a realistic time management schedule. Sometimes I have to sacrifice one for the other but knowing I am helping means more to me than the sacrifice.

Q. In what ways has your philanthropic work aligned with your personal values and beliefs?

My philanthropic endeavors reflect my core values and beliefs, epitomized by the military motto "NO MAN LEFT BEHIND." This mantra, originating from battlefield ethics, has been my lifelong commitment to advocating for those in need. From childhood, I've stood up for the marginalized, and as an adult, serving my country deepened my dedication to supporting veterans. Recognizing the challenges they face upon returning home, I founded a Military Sorority to provide assistance and advocate for their rights, striving daily to uphold these values.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey? The values or principles that have been instrumental in my journey are first knowing that “it's not about me.” I have several businesses and a Military Sorority. I realized that I would not be successful if I didn’t put the needs of my clients and Soror’s first, by showing them empathy and respect. Always having integrity is the key to my success and being passionate about what I do. Although I have had some wins, I have also had some failures as well, however, resilience has allowed me to persevere when I am faced with adversity. Resilience has helped me to maintain focus, regroup, and learn from my setbacks.

Q. Can you recall a specific moment of realization that achieving Honors of Distinction was within reach?

Realizing my journey towards a Doctoral Degree occurred at a Women's Empowerment Summit in Paris, where I was called "Dr. Oliver" offstage. This moment signaled the impending reality of my Honorarium Doctoral degree—a destiny fueled by faith and hope. The subsequent week, I found myself at the United Nations in New York, serving as a Delegate, building on my role as a United Nations Ambassador of Peace from Dubai in 2022. Amid this transition, a crucial deadline loomed, and panic struck when I realized I lacked my credentials. However, my sponsor's reassurance and faith steadied me. With determination and trust, I faced the challenge. Soon after, both my acceptance letter and funding arrived. This journey wasn't just geographical—it was a realization of my dreams, a testament to faith and determination. I'm still smiling, beyond belief.

Q. Can you share a specific experience where your faith or spiritual beliefs guided you through a challenging situation?

In 2022, my husband received a devastating diagnosis: an incurable illness compounded by renal failure. as I pulled up in the driveway, feeling the weight of fate, a divine whisper stopped my tears. The Holy Spirit challenged me to act as if my husband were alive, reminding me of those returning to empty homes that night. Just three days later, the Holy Spirit asked, "Aren't you excited?" prompting me to realize our testimony for the kingdom. Miraculously, nine days later, my husband walked out of the hospital, trusting God for complete healing. We chose to grow through this ordeal, trusting and praising God each day as my husband lives and bears witness to this divine testament.

Q. In what ways do you integrate your ministry or spiritual principles into your daily life and interactions? Incorporating my ministry or spiritual principles into my daily life and interactions is relatively seamless for me—they are inherently integrated. Every morning begins with a dedicated time for reflection and quiet contemplation. I strive to maintain a spiritually receptive state throughout the day. My guiding philosophy is to "Trust and Obey," I consciously endeavor to embrace this approach daily by picking up my cross and following Him. I often joke with my peers about days when the cross seems untouched on the floor. There are also times when I find myself struggling to get out of the boat daily, while helping others bear their burdens. Nonetheless, I integrate these practices and principles daily, drawing strength from trusting God.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey?

Three core values have been instrumental throughout my journey: persistence, support, and leadership. Persistence was key during my military service and educational pursuits. For instance, after initially dropping out of college, I never abandoned my academic dreams. Despite the challenges, I returned and completed not only a Bachelor's degree but also two Master's degrees and am now pursuing a PhD.

Q. How do you balance academic or professional excellence and personal well-being?

Balancing excellence with well-being has been a dynamic challenge addressed through effective time management and robust support systems. My military training taught me how to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently, which proved essential when juggling academic deadlines, professional responsibilities, and personal commitments.

Moreover, maintaining mental and physical health has been a priority. I regularly engage in mindfulness practices and physical activities, which help manage stress and maintain focus. As a licensed professional counselor, I also understand the importance of mental health care, ensuring I practice what I preach by taking time for self-care and reflection.

Q. What philanthropic causes are close to your heart, and how have you contributed to these initiatives?

My philanthropic efforts are deeply connected to Autism Awareness in the Black community and youth empowerment. Recognizing the lack of resources and support for Black families affected by autism, I founded a local support group that provides information, resources, and emotional support tailored to our community's needs. This group has become a vital resource in our area, helping families navigate the challenges of autism with greater support and understanding.

For youth empowerment, I initiated a mentorship program for young people in my community, focusing on leadership development and career guidance. This program prepares them for professional environments and instills confidence and resilience. By sharing my experiences and lessons learned, I aim to inspire these young individuals to pursue their ambitions and contribute positively to society.

Q. How has your perspective on success and achievement evolved throughout your academic or professional career?

While attending Carver Vocational Technical High School in Baltimore, City, I studied Practical Nursing. Prior to graduating, I was fortunate to be a part of a bridge program between my high school and a local nursing home. The nursing students were allowed to work as nursing graduate students. Once I passed the licensure exam, I was hired full time as a Licensed Practical Nurse. My studies at Carver laid the foundation for me to be a very dedicated, compassionate and a very competent nurse. This foundation prepared me for the path that I pursued to continue my nursing education and career. This year is my forty sixth year as a nurse, and I am still actively employed as a nurse. I have always positioned myself to be a stewart and lifelong learner. I take in all the knowledge that I can take so that I will always be a resource person, advocate and maintain expertise in my field of nursing. A high standard was always expected by myself and others. My nursing education includes obtaining an associate degree in Nursing from Catonsville Community College, a bachelor's degree from The Coppin State Helene Fuld School of Nursing and a master's degree in Community/Public Health Nursing from University of Maryland, School of Nursing. I am pending acceptance into the Phd Nursing program at Morgan State University. My employment history includes long term care facilities, St. Agnes and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Walter P. Carter Center-Developmental Disabilities Administration, Ambulatory Care, Nurse Assessor and Adjunct Faculty at Coppin State University. Currently, I am in the 31st year of employment with the Baltimore City Health Department, Department of Aging. I was inducted into the Carver Vocational Technical High School hall of Fame. I have received numerous awards for community services in both nursing and non nursing efforts. I absolutely love my choice to serve others. I am the owner of Pearl Health Services, LLC which is a Residential Service agency. Home health services, educational services and training are provided.

Q. How did your family and support network contribute to your success, and how do you plan to celebrate this achievement with them?

My family has always been extremely supportive in any and all endeavors that I have pursued. I contribute to this by always making them a part of them. I introduced my sisters, nieces, nephews, friends and anyone else I could to volunteer at an early age. My support network consists of family, friends and also the multiple organizations that I am a member of. I currently belong to the Carver Vocational Technical Alumni Association, Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Ravens Roost #35 and I am the President of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. Every organization that I am a member of, provides dedicated public service with an awesome network within each. This allows me to develop long lasting friendships with like -minded individuals, expand my circle of social contacts and be mutually supportive of each other and those we serve. This is all beneficial and contributes to my success. I plan to celebrate this wonderful achievement with my family and friends by celebrating on a family vacation, providing copies of the degree to each household because I rested on each of their shoulders, and they are extremely proud of me. I am who I am because of them.

Q. Are there particular courses, projects, or experiences that you found especially transformative in your journey to Honors of Distinction?

I began my registered nursing career at local hospitals in Baltimore City. I realized early that bedside nursing was not the career path for me. I have always enjoyed volunteering and serving the community. I decided to pursue my master’s degree in Community/Public Health Nursing. I became employed at the Baltimore City Health Department providing community health nursing services to the citizens of Baltimore City and I have truly enjoyed it. Pursuing a specialization, such as community health nursing provided advanced skills that enhanced my ability to develop, deliver and provide intervention for those served. I know without a doubt that I provide optimal community and public health services and advocate for those that are less fortunate, remaining culturally sensitive. I have served on several boards and committees to both develop and implement regulations, policy and procedures that are significant and are currently utilized today in the Maryland Department of Health, Long Term Services and Supports. These services are targeted for individuals with intellectual individuals with intellectual disabilities, and chronically ill children. Our goal is to provide optimal services in a community setting to prevent institutionalization.

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

I maintain humility by placing my businesses in areas similar to where I was raised. This motivates both me and the community. I work with those who remind me of myself before achieving success. My team gives away over 2,000 meals a year. We consider ourselves both "go-getters" and "go-givers." On a personal level, I strive to stay connected with my family members and my close circle of friends, who have known me since 5th grade when all I cared about was basketball and girls. I know they will always be honest with me and keep me grounded. This is essential for maintaining balance as a successful entrepreneur.

Q. How has your perspective on success and achievement evolved throughout your academic or professional career?

When I was younger, I viewed achievements as proof that I had beaten my competitors. Now, I see achievements as a result of my hard work and dedication. As I became more accomplished, I realized that everyone's definition of success is different. Even my own definition has changed over the past ten years. Previously, I regarded success as a destination that I could reach. Now, I live by the quote, "Success is never owned; it's rented, and the rent is due every day."

Q. What would you say is the most valuable lesson you've learned during your academic or professional journey?

I learned not to depend on support. New minority business owners are often conditioned to think they need it in order to be successful. This can lead to feelings of discouragement when there is a lack of support, especially during the initial phases. It can also become a distraction. The goal is to develop an undeniable and irresistible product. No one ever bought an iPhone because they thought Apple needed the money. Creating value in the marketplace is the key and a great lesson I've learned. While support is great, it's just the icing on the cake.

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

I’m asked this question often. Actually. I maintain a sense of humility and gratitude without much effort at all. My Christian faith, family values and my family keep me deeply grounded. Growing up, the value of gratitude and the belief that each and every individual is uniquely and wonderfully made by God, was instilled in me. I understand we have different strengths, abilities, and qualities that, when combined, build high performing organizations and teams. This foundational perspective humbles me and reminds me to always be thankful for being endowed with gifts that I can bring and value that I can add which ultimately open doors for me to make an even greater impact. I see opportunities as a way to make a difference in the lives of those I’m called to serve.

Equally important, I believe that the recognition I receive and the success I experience are not solely due to my own efforts, but also due to the grace of God and the support and guidance I have received from others. By remembering these principles, I am able to stay grounded, appreciative, and humble, no matter how far my achievements may take me.

Q. In what ways has your understanding of your field of study or profession deepened throughout your journey?

Q. How do you stay motivated and focused during challenging times ensuring continued excellence in your pursuits?

First, I draw strength from my faith, which reminds me of my purpose and resilience. Additionally, the unwavering support from my family, friends, mentors, accountability partners, and colleagues serves as a constant source of encouragement and motivation.

In moments of difficulty, I remind myself of the positive outcomes and transformative impact that I have had on both my clients and organizations that I serve. Also, during those moments, I reflect on the testimonials and feedback I have received through the years, which reinforces the value of my contributions and motivates me to push through challenges. I become more intentional with focusing on my purpose and calling, aligning my actions with my core values and goals. By staying true to my principles and maintaining a clear vision of the impact I strive to achieve, I am able to push through obstacles with determination and resilience.

Overall, my ability to stay motivated and focused during challenging times stems from a combination of my faith, support system, proven impact on others, and a deep commitment to my purpose. These empower me to strive for excellence and uphold high standards in everything I aspire to do. Even in the face of adversity, ultimately, I know all will be WELL!!

As I reflect on what God has allowed me to accomplish through His grace upon my life, I am extremely grateful for the core values and principles that I guide both my personal and professional life. Q. What emotions or thoughts ran through your mind when you first learned about receiving the Honors of

In a poignant moment, I found myself whispering, "Mum! This one is for you." It was during one of our final conversations, a time when her health was faltering, that I shared my earnest desire to carry the distinguished title of Dr. Sumer Edwards-Williams by the age of forty. Her response echoed with wisdom and love, as she assured me that honoring her would, in turn, unlock avenues of honor for myself. Her words lingered, a testament to the powerful influence she had over my journey. Amidst the whirlwind of emotions that engulfed me, pride emerged as a prevailing force. I felt a deep sense of pride, not only in my own determination but also in the profound impact of my father, whose unwavering support and 'go-getter' mentality had shaped my path.

In the midst of my reflections, another thought surfaced: "Look what the Lord has done." It echoed within me as I recently traversed through a harrowing ordeal, feeling as though it was a pivotal part of my journey toward restoration.

Q. How do you maintain a sense of humility and gratitude amidst recognition and success?

Observing the consequences of unchecked pride and ego, I've witnessed the havoc they wreak when not surrendered to God. My reverence and awe of the divine serve as anchors, reminding me that all glory belongs to Him. As I navigate my sphere of influence, I recognize myself merely as a conduit for His purpose. The Lord, unquestionably, is deserving of all honor and praise.

Maintaining an attitude of gratitude is paramount, especially when reflecting on the abundant blessings bestowed upon me by God. Even during seasons when I feel undeserving, I've experienced His grace working through me. I firmly believe that allowing oneself to be consumed by pride is detrimental, draining away energy and diminishing effectiveness.

Q. Can you share a specific experience where your faith or spiritual beliefs guided you through a challenging situation?

The year 2020 marked a profound loss in my life when my beloved mother passed away, plunging me into a deep depression from which I struggled to emerge. During this dark period, I found myself unable to connect with my children, my husband, or anyone around me. The trauma of witnessing my mother's health decline had a profoundly negative impact on my well-being, and I felt utterly lost in grief. My heart carried a weight too heavy for words to express.

Yet, amidst the darkness, my faith in God served as a guiding light. In the depths of despair, I heard His comforting voice urging me to reach out for help. Remembering the words of James 5:14-16, I sought solace in the promise of divine healing: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up."

Though the situation seemed bleak and hopeless, I chose to anchor myself in this steadfast promise. I clung to the belief that even in the midst of despair, God's healing power would prevail.

Q. What challenges did you face along the way, and how did you overcome them to achieve this distinction?

Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, I embarked on a bold venture to open a factory in Haiti to produce hair products. Despite the global limitations imposed by the pandemic, particularly in North Korea and China, I saw an opportunity to fast-track our operations and build a workforce of 2600 employees in a 50,000 square-foot warehouse. As a Black woman leading a multi-million dollar business, I was driven by a relentless determination to defy the odds and achieve remarkable success in record time. However, our journey was not without its trials. Tragically, Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake, compounded by the assassination of the president, leading to a tumultuous period of instability. In the face of these unforeseen challenges, all investors withdrew their support, leaving our business in jeopardy. We were forced to pivot swiftly and decisively to navigate this crisis. Compounding our difficulties, Haiti was subsequently placed on a no-fly list, further restricting our ability to operate and thrive in the region. Despite these setbacks, I remained undeterred in my commitment to our vision and mission. Through resilience, resourcefulness, and unwavering determination, we forged new partnerships and opportunities, ultimately finding solace and promise in establishing relationships in Ghana. The journey has been arduous and fraught with uncertainty, but it has also been a testament to the power of perseverance and adaptability in the face of adversity. As we continue to navigate the everevolving landscape of entrepreneurship, I am fueled by a renewed sense of purpose and optimism for the future.

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what do you believe sets you apart and makes you deserving of Honors of Distinction?

My journey is a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence. Coming from humble beginnings as a foster kid in Detroit, I faced numerous obstacles and challenges early on in life. However, instead of allowing my circumstances to define me, I chose to carve my own path and create opportunities where none seemed to exist. Transitioning from a successful career in media to the world of hair and beauty, I embarked on a bold new venture by opening multiple locations and a thriving hair store. Venturing into manufacturing during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, I made history as the first African-American woman to establish a factory on such a large scale. Despite facing setbacks and the need to pivot back into media, I remained steadfast in my commitment to innovation and growth. Amidst personal struggles and bouts of depression, I found solace and healing through sharing my experiences and challenges with others. By leveraging my platform to uplift and empower my community, I not only found support but also forged meaningful connections that propelled me forward. Today, my media presence has flourished, boasting nearly 100,000 followers across all platforms and reaching over 30 million views per month. With a renewed sense of purpose, my team and I are dedicated to reshaping the cultural narrative and elevating consciousness by offering a fresh perspective and serving as a beacon of inspiration for others. From overcoming the adversity of growing up in foster care to influencing global conversations, I believe my journey exemplifies the power of resilience, determination, and the relentless pursuit of greatness. It is this unique combination of experiences and achievements that I believe sets me apart and makes me deserving of Honors of Distinction.

Q. Can you share a personal philosophy or mantra that has guided you on your path to Honors of Distinction?

My personal philosophy and mantra revolve around the principles of self-awareness, healing, and continuous selfimprovement. I firmly believe that understanding our past traumas and identifying our triggers is essential for personal growth and development. By confronting and addressing our own pain and vulnerabilities, we gain the power to heal ourselves and, in turn, extend that healing to others. Central to my philosophy is the idea of never being in competition with anyone else, but rather, striving to surpass our own limitations and become the best version of ourselves. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, I advocate for a mindset focused on self-improvement and selfmastery. This approach fosters a sense of empowerment and allows us to unleash our full potential without being constrained by external standards or expectations. Ultimately, my mantra encapsulates the journey of overcoming personal obstacles, healing from past wounds, and channeling that healing energy into making a positive impact on the world. By embracing this philosophy, I am committed to continuously evolving and growing as an individual while inspiring others to do the same.

Q. Can you describe the impact of your academic or professional pursuits on the community or society at large?

Today as I reflect I can smile! Smile because I endured it all. Smiling because of perseverance. Smiling because I have accomplished.

As an Accountant I have assisted many to advance their businesses and look forward to continued growth. In my family circle everyone looks to me when they have a business idea, whether it is to start up, expand, or financing.

The same helpful spirit has spilled over in the community and also in my constituency whereby all the villagers and constituents that I have been in contact with see me as their consultant. This I do free of cost as it is my way of giving back to my community and constituency as a whole.

I often encourage people of all ages to dream, to do and to become. In my many talks of encouragement at my office located on Friars Hill Road when preparing business plans in particular I often give a speech of my life, how it all started and where I am today. Due to the impactful lessons and lifetime experience I have seen many become entrepreneurs which is the first step in my opinion to becoming financially free which is the dream of most of us who aspire for greatness.

As an aspiring Politician I find it extremely simple to dialogue and help others because of my academic and professional career/pursuits. Life has taught me one thing and that is to remain patient, kind and humble and for that I have been receiving my many blessings and being nominated for this honorary Doctorate is just one of them.

Q. Can you share a personal philosophy or mantra that has guided you on your path to Honors of Distinction?

There are two mantras that I live by:-

One is “Go hard or go home” - I do not know who first said it.

The second one is “Find a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” Mark Twain and Confucius

These two phrases have kept me going from higher education studies to my business to my personal endeavors.

I often think about doing my Doctorate and never have I thought that I would have been nominated to do so in 2024. My life has been filled with many failures and successes and to date I am grateful for them all because had it not been for those experience I would not have been here today to give thanks for my many blessings.

Q. Can you share specific initiatives or projects you've undertaken to positively impact your local community?

I have embarked on a Political journey in Antigua and Barbuda which will allow me to further my contribution to the many people I serve.

To date I have been feeding people and providing clothing for those who are less fortunate, and I have been a great help to a nine (9) year old child with Cancer whose mother has already contacted St. Judes Hospital in the United States of America (USA) for medical assistance.

My mom is a cancer survivor and I have always had the urge to be a part of a cancer help group and I have started a Non-Profit Organization geared towards helping people with cancer. This organization will assist people with cancer by providing financial assistance towards cancer treatment. Another initiative I have started is football training for young boys and girls to train professionally for football. This initiative came about as I watch many good talents in the community and my constituency at large on the football field every week. Beginning September 2024 there will be 14 children who will embark on this program so that they can better prepare to become a professional footballer in the USA and/or UK. I promise to ensure this dream becomes a reality for these children.

Q. What challenges did you face along the way, and how did you overcome them to achieve this distinction?

What an awesome question. My professional journey mirrors that of many others who may read this article. I was raised with a simple recipe for success: go to school, excel, follow the rules, graduate, pursue higher education, get married, start a family, and bask in a life filled with happiness and fulfillment. Sounds straightforward, right? Wrong. No one warned me about the challenges, the unforeseen hurdles that would test my resolve, or the unfairness of life's twists and turns. Nobody mentioned the invisible obstacles that would demand to be confronted head-on. Despite rewriting the script of childhood trauma and breaking generational curses, following the prescribed path to success did not shield me from the possibility of sudden destruction.

To say there were hurdles to overcome is an understatement. Each obstacle became a lesson learned. Drawing from the wisdom of 1 Corinthians 10:13, "God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able," I firmly believe in the power of faith, discernment, tenacity, and a strong will. Despite the uncertainties of my purpose, I held onto an unwavering faith that I would eventually find it.

Today, armed with these invaluable gifts, I am dedicated to guiding my clients towards their dreams. I lend them my ears, a heart brimming with enthusiasm for their success, and a belief in their potential even before they do. By the end of our journey together, they grasp their purpose, understand the 'why' behind their endeavors, discern their customer's journey, and possess a well-defined roadmap to bring their visions to fruition. To me, facilitating their mission, igniting their passion, and aligning them with their purpose while crafting a profitable plan is everything.

Every morning, I wake up thrilled to help others turn their dreams into reality. Is there anything more rewarding than that?

Q. In what ways has your understanding of your field of study or profession deepened throughout your journey? Oh, what a vibrant professional journey I've been on! Every twist and turn has left me breathless, often followed by moments of 'I just did that.' The eclectic mix of crazy, fun, and unconventional professions I've experienced were all part of a grander plan. I never questioned the journey; I simply held on for the ride of a lifetime.

How does a coach truly understand the challenges faced by a blue-collar wrecker driver as they grow their business and brand unless she's been in those shoes? Or, consider guiding a woman-owned business in a male-dominated industry through the intricacies of credibility, understanding, and growth – how can you do that authentically without having walked that path yourself? Coaching coaches, understanding diverse business models, passions, purposes, and industries requires being coachable yourself. And how can you inspire someone to pursue a dream that defies conventional wisdom – one that everyone says won't work – unless you've done it yourself?

Along this journey, I've acquired an arsenal of tools to refine my craft. But technical excellence is crucial to executing a welldeveloped plan. I've had the honor of collaborating with incredible tech teams – the ones fluent in 'techanese.' I've worked alongside them, speaking their language and translating their expertise for the wider team. Jokes aside, over the past 13 years, I've cultivated skills spanning event coordination, project management, app design, development, testing, corporate-level systems training, web design, CRM development, and more. My professional journey has been enriching, furnishing me with a wealth of knowledge that benefits both my clients and our teams.

Q. Can you share a personal philosophy or mantra that has guided you on your path to Honors of Distinction? "EVERYONE in EVERY role is someone else’s EVERYTHING.” Seems simple, perhaps cliché, but let's pause and read it again, understanding that each word is intentionally capitalized. “EVERYONE in EVERY role is someone else’s EVERYTHING.”

I hold steadfastly to the belief that every person I encounter, regardless of their role, journey, or the chapter I intersect with them, is cherished deeply by someone, somewhere. It’s crucial to me to regard each individual as if they are the most significant person in the world to someone else, because they are. Seeing someone through the eyes of those who love, adore, and cherish them can be challenging, but it’s a priceless gift, both to me and to whomever I encounter – whether a client, potential client, or simply someone seeking a listening ear. Sometimes, all someone needs is to feel heard.

This simple yet powerful mantra has guided my journey to Honors of Distinction. By assisting individuals one at a time, with calculated sincerity and love, I've found my path to success. Helping others in a genuine and caring manner has brought me to where I stand today."

Q. Reflecting on your accomplishments, what values or principles have been instrumental in your journey?

As an accomplished journalist, marketer, and author, I have developed seven guiding principles that have been critical to my success. These principles are not just words on a page but a creed that I live by. By following them, I have been able to stay grounded, focused, and motivated.

I lean on, acknowledge God, and trust Him to order my steps and direct my path.

I surround myself with positivity to nurture a mindset of optimism and resilience.

I draw strength and encouragement from inspiring people whose passions and determination fuel my own aspirations and drive for continued success and greatness.

I challenge myself to learn and grow continually, seizing opportunities to do well while doing good and making a positive impact.

I take actionable steps toward my goals, ensuring that every endeavor aligns with my purpose and moves me closer to making meaningful progress in my journey.

I am the architect of my dreams, empowered by my mission and vision and driven by my determination to bring them to fruition.

I create life-transforming, trajectory-shifting ventures and initiatives to give back, make a difference, leave an indelible mark, and make the world better than I found it.

Living by these principles, I have been blessed to achieve real and meaningful success in my personal and professional life and bring change wherever God allows my feet to trod.

Q. Can you share an anecdote or experience that encapsulates the essence of your dedication and hard work?

One of my proudest accomplishments was launching an international magazine with just $4,000. The launch was no easy feat, but it was a testament to my determination to succeed in my entrepreneurial venture. I relied heavily on my guiding principles, creativity, resourcefulness, and strong business acumen to overcome numerous obstacles and succeed in my mission to promote diversity and showcase accomplished professionals of color on a global stage. I remained committed to my vision, negotiated smart partnerships, and navigated diverse world cultures to win, all while living nearly four of those years in China as an expatriate. My ability to adapt and turn obstacles into opportunities taught me that with passion, perseverance, and a clear vision, anything is possible, and nothing is out of reach.

Q. In what ways do you envision inspiring others within your field or community through your achievements?

As a passionate and dedicated media professional, I strive to set a standard of excellence that inspires others to follow suit. My goal is to lead by example, sharing my journey and valuable lessons learned to empower and uplift my fellow professionals. By mentoring and coaching individuals at all stages of their careers and advocating for collaboration and ongoing professional development, I am committed to driving collective success and fostering individual growth. I firmly believe that authenticity, empathy, and trust are key to building strong relationships and creating positive change. By embracing diversity and inclusion, I work tirelessly to ensure that every voice is heard and valued and that we all have the opportunity to contribute to a compelling vision for the future. Through community service and a tireless commitment to excellence, I am confident I can ignite inspiration and empowerment within my industry. By embracing these principles and continuing to evolve within our dynamic field, we can all achieve our dreams and make a lasting impact on the world.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring individuals who aim to achieve similar academic or professional

If I were so blessed as to be able to offer some advice to an aspiring individual looking to achieve similar academic or professional distinction, I would advise that individual to always remain focused on the ultimate goal. I would advise that individual to put their goal(s) in writing. The objective in putting their goal in writing is two folds. First, it keeps the big picture always in their view as a constant reminder of what they are aspiring toward. Second, putting their goal in writing will facilitate them in creating an outline. The outline would demonstrate how their goal could be splintered it into manageable and quantifiable steps. These steps can be labeled as short term and long term goals. I would advise that this outline will need to be revisited periodically. The primary reason for periodically I revisiting the outline is that perhaps a step may need to be changed, eliminated or added as they go through the process. I would remind the individual that flexibility is a key component in achieving a goal. The individual should not be so rigid with their outline that they become unwilling to make adjustments. I would counsel the individual that life happens on our journey to achieving our goals. I would inform the individual that in life there will be hiccups and bumps in the road along the way. Not all challenges are bad. For instance, you may get married, you may have a baby or you may receive a promotion in your current position. These factors can slow down your progress just as significantly as an injury, death or loss of job. Sometimes what may have initially appeared and a hiccup or bump in the road may the catalyst that parlays us on a fast track to achieve our goal. Sometimes what we originally thought was a challenge may

Q. How do you maintain a balance between academic or professional excellence and personal well-being?

In order to maintain a balance between academic or professional excellence well-being, the first item on the agenda would be to establish priorities and boundaries. For me, another essential component for maintaining a balance is the spiritual component. This spiritual component is foundational in maintaining a balanced well-being. Spiritual component allows you to operate with a level of integrity and consistency which are indispensable characteristics for living a balanced life. These three components, priority boundaries and spiritual, operate both independent and interdependent of one another. Although the lines between these components are clear, they are permeable. A special project at work could cause you to have to miss out on family time on any given weekend. A child’s championship game could be held on the weekend out of town which may cause you to be absent from worship service. A spouse’s graduation could warrant you to be absent from work. These are just a few examples of how the boundaries and priorities ebb and flow in maintaining a balance in life. It a balancing act to keep our academic/professional personal and spiritual components in check. It behooves us to insure that none of the components are left completely out of the equation. We have to remain cognizance and vigilant that none of these three components be allowed to become so dominant that it/they completely annihilates the others. Like most things in life, it is a process to maintain a balance. It is not a once and done or set it and forget it.

Q. How do you stay motivated and focused during challenging times, ensuring continued excellence in

During challenging times, I remind myself that in life there will always be challenges to overcome. I remind myself that life is a marathon and not a sprint. I pray for guidance and directions before I make any move. Then the first thing I do is to seek to ascertain the root cause of the challenge. By identifying the source of the challenge, I can deal with the actual challenge and not the symptom of the challenge. This would allow me to be able to determine if this is a challenge that I can overcome, mitigate or eliminate at this particular junction. For example, if I were trying to obtain a small business loan to expand my business, I could have a solid business plan and sound financial documents. However, Small Business Association requires five years of financial documents and I have only been in business for three years, two more additional years of financial documents would help me to overcome the time obstacle. Another way I keep myself motivated and focused during challenging times is by surrounding myself with a nucleus of trusted people who I can count on to help me to work through the challenge. Everybody can’t be in your inner circle. Jesus had his inner circle that was always with Him, Peter James and John. We need to pray for discernment because like Jesus, we also have a Judas (s) in our lives. Another way I keep myself motivated is by enjoying the journey on my way towards my goal. While remaining focused on the ultimate goal, it is extremely important to stop and recognize the steps you have already achieved towards your goal. You have to learn to appreciate your accomplishments no matter how small. Zachariah 4:10 tells us to “despise not small beginning.” Usain Bolt was not born the world’s greatest sprinter. He more than likely learned to crawl before he learned to walk then learned to run and the rest is history. I also keep myself motivated by not being afraid to fail. By failing, I learn what doesn’t work and I try something else.
