“YOU & I WILL SOON BE DUST”
A documentary of 7 days of living in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
Unravel the romantic brutalism and liminal moments in a real Burning Man experience.
This photography series sits as a reflection on what lies beyond the edge of “pleasure.” There’s no such thing as extreme pleasure — to chase a limit still centres the position you’ve internalised.
I try to document the ordinary moments within this ephemeral metropolis in the Nevada desert every summer, a less performative side of Burning Man. It’s easy to perceive Burning Man as a festival, a fringe festival, and the “Burners” (people of Burning Man) as the life of the party. In fact, it’s about communities, dreamers from all over the world who challenge the boundaries of colonial and capitalist narratives. Together, they fabricate an out-of-the-world reality that offers a glimpse of an alternative world, one that goes beyond the edge of pleasure.
If Burning Man has ever been labelled a fringe festival, then the fringe is as much the centre as it is the fringe. It attracts the inner fringe of any given individual—because who, really, at the end of the day, is who they appear to be? We conform to the context within which we must perform. At Burning Man, you have the opportunity to simply express how and who you are.
