Douglas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 357,978. The county’s etymology is derived from the United States Senator Stephen A. Douglas. The county seat is Castle Rock.
Douglas County is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado, metropolitan statistical area. It is located midway between Colorado’s two largest cities, Denver and Colorado Springs, and contains a portion of Aurora, the state’s third-largest city. Douglas County has the highest median household income of any Colorado county or statistical equivalent. It is ranked seventh nationally in that category.
Douglas County is lightly wooded, mostly with ponderosa pine, with broken terrain characterized by mesas, foothills, and small streams. Cherry Creek and Plum Creek rise in Douglas County and flow north toward Denver and into the South Platte River. Both were subject to flash flooding in the past, Plum Creek being partially responsible for the Denver flood of 1965. Cherry Creek and Plum Creek are now dammed.
Most residents commute to workplaces elsewhere in the metropolitan area outside of the county. Suburban development is supplementing the traditional ranching economy of the county.
Douglas County was one of the original 17 counties created in the Colorado Territory by the Colorado Territorial Legislature on November 1, 1861. The county was named in honor of U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas[3] of Illinois, who died five months before the county was created. The county seat was originally Franktown, but was moved to California Ranch in 1863, and then to Castle Rock in 1874. Although the county’s boundaries originally extended eastward to the Kansas state border, in 1874, most of the eastern portion of the county became part of Elbert County.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 844 square miles (2,190 km2), of which 841 square miles (2,180 km2) are land and 2.6 square miles (6.7 km2) (0.3%) are covered by water.
Jefferson County, Colorado – west Arapahoe County, Colorado – north Elbert County, Colorado – east El Paso County, Colorado – south Teller County, Colorado – southwest
Three state parks fall within Douglas County: Castlewood Canyon State Park, Chatfield State Park and Roxborough State Park. Parts of the county lie within the Pike National Forest and were crossed by the historic South Platte Trail.
The Rueter–Hess Reservoir, when filled, may provide significant recreation, including fishing, hiking, and nonmotorized boating. If filled to capacity, surface size would be 1,140 acres, making this a fairly significant reservoir in Colorado and Douglas County’s largest body of water.
The Prairie Canyon Ranch, at 4620 CO-83, about 10 miles (16 km) south of Franktown, is a Douglas County Open Space. It is a working cattle ranch on 978 acres (3.96 km2), open to the public on special events.
As of the census of 2000, 175,766 people, 60,924 households, and 49,835 families were residing in the county. The population density was 209 people per square mile (81/km2). The 63,333 housing units averaged 75 per square mile (29/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 92.77% White, 2.51% Asian, 0.95% African American, 0.41% Native American, 1.49% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 5.06% of the population.
Of the 60,924 households, 47.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.8% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.2% were not families. About 13.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 1.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88, and the average family size was 3.19.
In the county, the population distribution was 31.6% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 37.9% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 4.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.4 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $82,929, and for a family was $88,482 (these figures had risen to $93,819 and $102,767, respectively, as of a 2007 estimate[12]). Males had a median income of $60,729 versus $38,965 for females. The per capita income for the county was $34,848. About 1.6% of families and 2.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.9% of those under age 18 and 3.7% of those age 65 or over.
Douglas County had the highest median household income of any Colorado county or statistical equivalent in 2000. In 2008, it ranked eighth in the United States in that category; it was one of two in the top 15 not in the vicinity of New York or Washington.
In 2021, Douglas County was judged by the U.S. News & World Report to be the second healthiest of 3,143 counties and county-equivalents of the United States based on 84 different factors. Residents of the county lived 84.0 years on the average compared to the U.S. average of 77.5 years

See the final page of this report for a discussion of unique contextual factors that may impact the 2022 transitional performance framework results.
The performance framework evaluates district and school performance on Academic Achievement, Academic Growth, and Postsecondary & Workforce Readiness indicators. CO SAT: represent outcomes for designated subjects and student groups; participation rates count parent excusals as non-participants.
Dropout Rates: represent percentages of students enrolled in grades 7-12 at any time during the year who left and did not subsequently enroll in another Colorado school. Calculations are based on the 2021 End of Year (EOY) data submission.
Matriculation Rates: represent percentages of students who enrolled in a Career & Technical Education (CTE) program or 2- or 4-year institute of higher education in the year following graduation. Students who earned a CTE certificate, college degree, or other industry-recognized credential prior to graduation are also included. Calculations are based on the 2021 graduation cohort.
Graduation Rates: represent percentages of students graduating high school within designated timeframes. Ratings are based on the best of the 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-year graduation rates. AYGs designate Anticipated Years of Graduation, which are defined as four years after the year that students initially enroll in 9th grade. Calculations are based on data for students with AYGs between 2018 and 2021.

Create an inventory sheet of items to move
Research moving options. You’ll need to decide if yours is a do-it-yourself move or if you’ll be using a moving company.
Request moving quotes. Solicit moving quotes from as many moving companies and movers as possible. There can be a large difference between rates and services within moving companies.
Discard unnecessary items. Moving is a great time for ridding yourself of unnecessary items. Have a yard sale or donate unnecessary items to charity
Packing materials. Gather moving boxes and packing materials for your move.
Contact insurance companies. (Life, Health, Fire, Auto) You’ll need to contact your insurance agent to cancel/ transfer your insurance policy. Do not cancel your insurance policy until you have and closed escrow on the sale.
Seek employer benefits. If your move is work-related, your employer may provide funding for moving expenses. Your human resources rep should have information on this policy.
Changing Schools. If changing schools, contact new school for registration process.
Contact utility companies. Set utility turnoff date, seek refunds and deposits and notify them of your new address.
Obtain your medical records. Contact your doctors, physicians, dentists and other medical specialists who may currently be retaining any of your family’s medical records. obtain these records or make plans for them to be delivered to your new medical facilities.
Note food inventory levels. Check your cupboards, refrigerator and freezer to use up as much of your perishable food as possible.
Service small engines for your move by extracting gas and oil from the machines. This will reduce the chance to catch fire during your move.
Protect jewelry and valuables. Transfer jewelry and valuables to safety deposit box so they can not be lost or stolen during your move.
Borrowed and rented items. Return items which you may have borrowed or rented. Collect items borrowed to others.
Plan your itinerary. Make plans to spend the entire day at the house or at least until the movers are on their way. Someone will need to be around to make decisions. Make plans for kids and pets to be at the sitters for the day.
Change of address. Visit USPS for change of address form.
Bank accounts. Notify bank of address change. Make sure to have a money order for paying the moving company if you are transferring or closing accounts.
Service automobiles. If automobiles will be driven long distances, you’ll want to have them serviced for a troublefree drive.
Cancel services. Notify any remaining service providers (newspapers, lawn services, etc) of your move.
Start packing. Begin packing for your new location.
Travel items. Set aside items you’ll need while traveling and those needed until your new home is established. Make sure these are not packed in the moving truck!
Scan your furniture. Check furniture for scratches and dents before so you can compare notes with your mover on moving day.
Prepare Floor Plan. Prepare floor plan for your new home. This will help avoid confusion for you and your movers.
Review the house. Once the house is empty, check the entire house (closets, the attic, basement, etc) to ensure no items are left or no home issues exist.
Sign the bill of lading. Once you are satisfied with the mover’s packing your items into the truck, sign the bill of lading. If possible, accompany your mover while the moving truck is being weighed.
Double check with your mover. Make sure your mover has the new address and your contact information should they have any questions during your move.
Vacate your home. Make sure utilities are off, doors and windows are locked and notify your real estate agent you’ve left the property.

Pets have many needs which become complicated when moving from one place to another. This moving checklist for pets lists all of the hurdles of pet relocation.
Visit the veterinary office. Make sure to pick up your pet’s medical records before leaving your former home. Have your pet vaccinated and stock up on any pet meds needed until you settle into your new home. If your move is difficult for a pet, ask your vet to prescribe sedatives to be given on and around moving day.
Update your pet ID tags. Have new tags created with the pet’s name and your new contact information.
Check licensing laws. Contact the proper authority in your new location for information on pet licensing requirements. Secure a valid license for your pet.
Temporary residence. Your pet is best kept away from all your moving day activities. They’ll likely get agitated when seeing items being removed from the home. Have pets stay with friends or board them in a kennel for the day.
Transporting your pet. If you are driving a car, make sure to take plenty of breaks to minimize the chance your pet gets carsick. If your pet is temperature or moving sensitive, cover their cage with a blanket and keep them in a temperature regulated environment. If your pet becomes easily stressed, consider giving them sedatives.
Settling into your new home Once you are somewhat settled into your new home, let your pet roam around and get used to the new space. Since pets will initially be confused about their new surroundings, keep them confined or leashed until you are certain they will not run away from home. Pets that are stressed and confused can be kept confined in a small room with their bed, toys, and other items.
If your pet has a microchip, contact the company and provide your updated contact information.
Flying with your pet. If your move requires flying with your pet, check with your airline to see what requirements they may have for pet travel. Try to choose nonstop flights since pets may become unsettled by air pressure changes and airport handling.
Moving pets internationally. Those moving to another country should check with that country’s embassy or consulate about any quarantine or health issues related to pet moving. If moving a bird, make sure to secure proper documentation required by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
Moving fish. Your local pet store is the best resource for getting information on relocating fish. Depending upon your move, they will have the knowledge and supplies needed for moving fish.
