I’m optimistic after touring new and upgraded facilities, but the overall impact of Trump 2.0 remains undecided
The “red wave” is here. Is that a great-again thing? Glad you asked.
I’ll admit, I didn’t cry for the celebrities who swore to leave the country if Presidentelect Donald Trump won. And I was pleasantly surprised that, not only was it a decisive decision, it was delivered on election eve. Just like old times. I also have it on good authority most tank truck industry stakeholders are pleased with the results, especially regarding zero-emission vehicle regulations and adoption timelines. In fact, the CEO of Bulk Transporter’s parent company, Endeavor Business Media, which owns publications across every major industry, held a post-election town hall, and trucking was the only industry he mentioned as definitely feeling more optimistic about 2025.
But the overall impact of a second Trump term remains uncertain.
Several of my fellow editors, and our CEO, hold concerns, three specifically: Trump’s unpredictability vs. the “known commodity” of a Kamala Harris presidency, how tariffs could affect inflation, and what mass deportation might mean for America’s workforce. These are valid considerations. And Republicans’ convincing win isn’t guaranteed to be so sweeping for truckers. At Tank Truck Week, I asked Daimler Truck North America’s Michael Young if DTNA believes an administration change will alter emissions requirements in time to revise its production strategy, or if model-year 2027 plans are locked in. After taking time to compose his answer—while Energy Services meeting attendees chuckled—he said: “Should the administration change, we’re likely to see changes to the 2027 [EPA and GHG emissions] rules, and some of those impacts, and frankly, some of them are needed. But if we do see the administration change, we also could see more states rushing to adopt some of the different [ACT and ACF] rules.
“So, what route is better is a toss-up.”
Sister publication FleetOwner summed it up like this: “Depending on how Trump’s administration approaches the issue, these rollbacks could still face fierce resistance in the courts or Congress.” And we’re already seeing Democratic governors vowing to fight Trump 2.0.
However, I’m also optimistic, and this Buyer’s Guide issue is my 60-page basis.
I visited two trailer manufacturers and two equipment providers this fall, and everyone was investing heavily in new technology and services, presumably preparing for the upswing to come. STE expects to open its brand-new, highly automated 404,000-sq.-ft. tanker manufacturing plant in January (page 16), The Jack Olsta Co. has added 40,000 sq. ft. of space and expanded truck upfitting services (page 22), Kraft Tank Corporation established a 56,000-sq.-ft. operation in August in Texas (page 27), and Kalyn Siebert—which recently landed a deal to build ISO tank chassis trailers for Quality Carriers—this year earmarked $4.5 million for advanced machinery (check Trailer/Body Builders for that story).
That’s why my top concern now is preserving this great publication.
Many magazines are going all digital, and this one came close the last two years. I’ve argued successfully against the transition because I believe in the value of print, and don’t believe Bulk Transporter will have the same presence as just another website channel. But it’s growing harder to resist. So here’s my message to tank truck constituents: If you appreciate the unique insights in this magazine—which turns 88 next year—go subscribe to the print version and newsletter today, and urge everyone in your company to do likewise. They’re free, and your support is priceless.
Remember: The other CV titles are for them. Bulk Transporter is for you. BT

The dirtiest word in the fuel-hauling industry is “cross-drop,” which refers to the accidental unloading of a fuel product into the wrong storage tank. The consequences of a cross-drop often are so financially damaging they leave an irremovable stain on a carrier’s reputation. That’s why one Texas-based fuel hauler is turning to Berrys Technologies’ Midas Elbow to eradicate the word from its vocabulary.
Berrys’ Midas Elbow is an anti-contamination drop gun that delivers “simple and seamless” operation. Drivers activate the elbow by latching to the filling position and presenting an RFID tag located in the spill bucket before dropping their load as usual. The Midas Elbow monitors for the correct fuel and shuts off if the wrong one is identified, Berrys reported.
“It makes our drivers slow down and double-check the products they are unloading,” said Skylar Fronk, transportation and logistics manager at Booker, Texas-based Fronk Oil, and a former driver himself.
“Even if they are still wrong after double-checking, it stops a very expensive mistake from happening, essentially removing human error.
“We haven’t had a cross-drop since deploying the technology.”
That’s why the Midas Elbow is gaining traction in the U.S., with a major fuel retailer rolling out more than 200 Midas valves across its fleet, initially in Dallas, and then Louisiana and Minneapolis, Berrys said.
Family-owned Fronk Oil discovered the Midas Elbow while searching for an affordable cross-drop technology designed for fuel freight businesses. Now word is spreading among the curious drivers who’ve seen these drop elbows on tank trailers at loading racks. “Drivers complained about taking the extra step to double-check drops in the beginning, but they quickly adjusted to the new routine,” Frank shared.
“Now we’re operating smoothly, with no lost time. The business is running as it should.”
Replacing all regular fuel delivery elbows with Midas Elbows eliminates the risk of accidentally mixing gasoline and diesel, Berrys said. And investing in risk reduction also can help lower insurance premiums. Fronk Oil reports it is enjoying a “hefty reduction” in fees since presenting the technology to its insurer, leading Skylar to equip every
The FLASH family of companies, which includes dry bulk hauler FLASH Trucking, this year is celebrating 40 years of transportation achievements in a significant milestone for the Green Lake, Wisconsin-based company. To mark the occasion, company leaders, including owners Pat and Lynn McConnell, recently honored the drivers and employees whose dedication and commitment have been instrumental in the company’s success. The event spotlighted members of FLASH’s President’s Safe Driving Club, which includes drivers with five-plus years of recognition from the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association.
FLASH also honored drivers with 1, 2, and 3 million accident-free miles.
“These drivers exemplify the highest standards of professionalism and safety, serving as role models within the transportation industry,” the company said in a news release.
Additionally, the celebration highlighted employees with 15-plus years of service.
“FLASH is proud to have 20 current employees with more than 15 years of tenure—totaling 526 years of experience,” the company reported. “Their dedication has been a driving force behind the company’s growth and evolution from a humble
trailer in Fronk’s fleet with the Midas Elbow.
Going forward, Berrys plans to introduce the “Midas Link” early next year. The small data-receiving device is mounted on the trailer, providing communications with the Midas Elbow after each drop, and notifying operators in real-time about cross-drop attempts. The device also supplies other useful data, including delivery times, location, analytics, and performance information.
“It’s an all-in-one, cross-drop protection and fleet monitoring kit,” Berrys concluded.
three-truck operation started in McConnell’s home, to the thriving business it is today. The FLASH family expands across the U.S. beyond trucking, including transloading, sand mining, warehousing, railcar management, and the local grocery store in Green Lake.”
As FLASH reflects on its storied history, company leaders are proud of the journey and look forward to a brighter future. The commitment of employees remains the foundation of FLASH’s success. “They truly are the ‘best of the best,’” the company said.
“Every challenge overcome has strengthened the team—and every success has added deeper meaning to the journey.”
Heniff Transportation Systems will manage rail transloading services at the newly opened New Orleans Transloading Industrial Park through a new agreement between Heniff and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB).
The $3 million facility is expected to help shippers move goods more easily between trucks and trains, making it faster to transport freight to America’s heartland, the partners reported.
“Together with the NOPB and Port NOLA [the Port of New Orleans], we’re very pleased to expand our transloading capabilities within the region,” Bob Heniff, Heniff founder and CEO, said in a news release. “The enhanced rail infrastructure and its strategic location offers our company a true competitive edge and service enhancements for our many customers.”
The property, which is owned by Port NOLA, will allow Heniff to provide multimodal shipping options for liquid and dry
Penn Tank Lines, a bulk transporter headquartered in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, commemorated its 50th anniversary with celebrations throughout the month of September.
Jack McSherry, who serves as chairman, founded Penn Tank as a gas hauler in 1974 in Philadelphia. Today, the carrier operates 500 trucks delivering a range of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel, which the company grew in 2020 and 2021 with the acquisitions of Stardust Transportation, Jet Star, and CD Hallock Trucking that moved the business into Indiana, South Carolina, and Texas.
Penn Tank, which also hauls food-grade products and ISO tanks, now services customers across two-thirds of the U.S. from more than 30 terminals.“Our 50-year journey is a testament to the commitment of our team,” Steve McSherry, Penn Tank president and CEO, and Jack’s son, said in a release. “We’re incredibly grateful for our long-tenured drivers, independent contractors, staff, and leadership group.”
bulk products to existing customers while simultaneously opening new markets. Heniff’s transload network includes 44 locations across North America where the company handles approximately 20,000 rail cars per year.
The Transloading Industrial Park complements Heniff’s existing liquid bulk service operations adjacent to the property.
“We’re excited to welcome Heniff as a new NOPB customer at our Transloading Industrial Park in New Orleans East,” said Ronald Wendel, Port NOLA acting president and CEO, and acting NOPB CEO. “Together we will ensure products are moved more efficiently through the global supply chain while also driving economic growth in and beyond this region.”
Funding sources included a $1.5 million grant from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) Shortline Railroad Priority Program, as well as a $1.5 million funding match from NOPB, according to the release.
“This project completion highlights the impact of the state’s investment in the Shortline Rail Improvement Program as it is
one of the original awards from the launch of the program in 2022,” said Julia FisherCormier, commissioner for LADOTD’s Office of Multimodal Commerce. “The NOPB’s inland connections cannot be overstated, our state’s connectivity ensures that goods arrive at homes across the nation, businesses efficiently move their products, and that Louisiana maintains its relevance and position as an economic driver for the state and region.
“We look forward to providing additional funding to further solidify Port NOLA and NOPB’s vital role in the global supply chain.”
Linden Bulk Transportation may finally have found its forever home. After spending the last eight years as part of Odyssey Logistics & Technology, Boasso Global, and Quala—which last year merged with Boasso to form Depot Connect International (DCI)— the Linden, New Jersey-based tank truck carrier recently joined Groendyke Transport through a new agreement with DCI.
The acquisition closed in September.
“We think it’s a good fit,” Groendyke CEO Greg Hodgen told Bulk Transporter.
“I certainly hope that’s how the people coming aboard feel. They’re finally going to be with a trucking company after going through several acquisitions, so we’re excited. We think we can give them a good home. It’s two venerable companies that have been around a while, and their operation matches well with what we do.”
Linden, founded in 1981, was family owned until Odyssey acquired it in 2016. Odyssey sold the chemical hauler to ISO tank specialist Boasso in April 2023, only two months after Boasso and tank cleaning and maintenance provider Quala revealed their plans to combine operations under private-equity group KKR. Boasso and Quala—which bought PSC in 2022—officially merged as DCI in October 2023.
Groendyke’s acquisition does not include Linden’s 21-acre tank container depot, which is the largest depot in New Jersey, with 2,500 containers on the property late last year. The deal does include all of Linden’s tank truck assets—about 250 tractors and 550 tank trailers as of October 2023—and truck terminals in Linden; Bensalem, Pennsylvania; Pasadena, Texas; St. Gabriel, Louisiana; and Cincinnati, Ohio.
Linden also runs trucks in Granite City, Illinois, where Groendyke has a terminal.
“We gain a lot of experienced people,” Hodgen said. “That’s one of the attractions any time we do a deal like this; and it hits a sweet spot for us in the Gulf Coast, where we already have a heavy presence. So we think it’s a good fit. It also expands our customer base,
even in areas where we already have facilities, and gives us a greater foothold in the Northeast and Upper Midwest we can use to expand our network.”
Hodgen credited his relationships with Terry O’Brien, DCI’s chief development officer who previously served as Quala president, and Michael Salz, the president of Linden Bulk whose family founded the company, for helping advance the deal after six months of negotiations with legal and financial advisors.
“Michael and I worked together on National Tank Truck Carriers committees, and attended customer events together over the years, so I’ve known him a long time and have a lot of respect for him,” Hodgen said.
When the acquisition closes, Linden will fold into Groendyke, giving the Enid, Oklahoma-headquartered bulk hauler locations in 18 states.
“We are excited to bring the folks at Linden Bulk into the Groendyke family,” Hodgen said in a news release.
“We can’t wait to show them a big welcome and add them to our very strong team.”
The Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) recently acquired Northern Dry Bulk, a Michigan-based bulk transporter that specializes in hauling and storing resins for the automotive, packaging, and electronics industries, and other end markets in the U.S. and Canada. Terms of the transaction, which includes 36 tractors and 91 trailers, were not disclosed.
The acquisition was KAG’s fourth in five months, following the additions of Idaho Milk Transport and Koppers Performance Chemicals late last year, and Florida Food Tankers in January. “The acquisition of Northern Dry Bulk establishes a definitive
entrance into the dry bulk transportation business for our company and perfectly aligns with our strategic growth initiatives to expand into new end markets,” John Rakoczy, KAG executive vice president of specialty products, stated in a news release. “The transaction also fulfills the needs of many of our current liquid bulk customers who also manufacture and distribute dry bulk materials.”
Northern Dry Bulk drivers, technicians, and operational support personnel will join KAG as part of the transaction, the companies said. The deal also includes two terminals with two maintenance bays, extensive
warehouse space and transloading equipment, allowing KAG to continue expanding its service offerings.
“In 1994, we started with one truck and a simple plan—to provide unmatched customer service,” said Tom Kunse, Northern Dry Bulk owner and president.
“Over the years we have become one of the most respected leaders in deliveries of plastic resins in the chemical manufacturing industry. By joining forces with KAG, both of our current and future customers will benefit from our shared knowledge, geographic footprint, and assets in a marketplace positioned for significant growth opportunities.”
Bulk transporter Custom Commodities, headquartered in Gilmer, Texas, and its associated businesses recently rebranded as Custom to better encompass the expanded capabilities of the combined operation, which continues to grow.
Custom also recently broke ground on a new transload facility and depot in Longview.
The rebranding includes warehouse operator Plastic Conversion Services, transload terminal operator Lift, and other endeavors, Custom reported. The new identifiers for each business unit are Custom Transport, Custom Warehousing, Custom Multimodal, Custom Leasing, and Custom Brokerage, with Custom used for general branding.
“We are very proud of our heritage in the trucking industry and remain committed to providing our customers with the very best service to meet their specific needs,” David L. Stevenson, Custom owner, said in a news release. “The company has grown dramatically, however, and now provides a full range of logistics and other solutions, so we need a name that reflects all of our capabilities and the white glove service we deliver.
“Our mission has always been ‘To provide our customers solutions specific to their business needs.’ To enhance our team culture, we also want to have everyone under one corporate umbrella. The new name and logo capture these commitments.”
Stevenson launched Custom as Custom Commodities Transport— which Bulk Transporter profiled in this 2021 article—in the 1980s. He subsequently acquired Elliott Truck Line, J. Moore Transporters, Tommy Ellis Trucking, Blue Flash Express, and, most recently, both Plastic Conversion Services and Plastic Transit. The new Custom branding was developed by a cross-functional team with input from the company’s c-suite.
“The rebranding was the result of a comprehensive process to understand the actual perceived brand resulting from our capabilities and years of service with our stakeholders,” said David A. Stevenson, Custom executive vice president. “Once we had a concept from the feedback, we engaged our customers, team members, and partners with the new name and resulting logo to ensure that everyone is part of the new Custom community.
“Custom remains a family-run business based in East Texas dedicated to providing our customers with a superior experience and supporting our stakeholders and the communities where we operate.
“Having this new clear brand identity and a unified message helps us achieve these goals.”
Custom executives marked the beginning of construction for the company’s latest multimodal distribution facility by driving a “golden spike” into the location’s new rail spur. The facility, capable of transloading “thousands” of railcars and trucks per year with a max capacity over 630 cars, is located on a 175-acre tract that will interchange with Union Pacific. The site, located near Interstate 20, is expected to be operating within 12 months, Custom reported.
The site will feature all the equipment needed to move bulk and packaged product between rail cars and truck trailers for both firstand last-mile shipments. It will offer storage and warehousing services, hopper transfers, and rail car/trailer washing in support of the packaging, plastics recycling, and chemical industries.
“We’re proud of this new site and the potential it represents for the local Longview economy and our company. Our team is committed to providing the local, national and global shippers supported by this rail terminal with the highest level of customer service while ensuring a safe workplace for everyone,” David L. Stevenson said.
Highway Transport is adding all-electric auxiliary power units (APUs) to its tank truck fleet through a new partnership with Dragonfly Energy.
The chemical hauler plans to install Dragonfly’s Battle Born APUs on over 500 trucks to boost sustainability with a “cost-effective” and “environmentally friendly” solution. The Tennessee-based carrier will equip new tractors and retrofit existing trucks with the lithium-ion battery system, which provides “ample” wattage for auxiliary applications without running a truck’s engine, Dragonfly reported.
“At Highway Transport, sustainability and
driver well-being are paramount,” Marshall Franklin, Highway Transport CEO and chief financial officer, said in a news release. “Dragonfly Energy’s solution allows us to make significant strides on both fronts. The added benefit of fuel cost savings further strengthens the value proposition of this partnership.”
The Battle Born APU increases comfort by allowing drivers to operate their air conditioner, appliances, and other electronics while the truck is off. It produces zero emissions without engine noise and recharges during drivetime, helping Highway Transport take a “concrete step” toward achieving its
“Green Treads” goals of reducing emissions, improving fuel efficiency, and enhancing driver comfort.
A pilot program and initial trials with Highway Transport have shown “promising” results, the partners indicated. The all-electric, lithium iron phosphate-based unit demonstrated extended power delivery and reliable performance, including the ability to consistently power hotel loads for 12-16 hours in extreme summer heat. “I’ve been driving for 35 years, and after installing the Battle Born all-electric APU in my truck, I can honestly say it’s amazing,” said Williams Gaines, a Highway Transport driver.
7-Eleven’s private fleet transforming fuel supply, support services by
WTO was ready. Well before two major hurricanes struck Florida’s Gulf Coast only two weeks apart, Archie Wood, director of transport operations at SWTO—the private fleet for 7-Eleven and its integrated fuel supplier, SEI Fuels—and his crew sprang to action, shifting equipment away from flood-prone areas, staging trucks near strategic fuel terminals, and securing personnel from outside markets.
The bulk hauler still had more than a dozen drivers from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas assisting emergency response efforts in Florida and beyond long after Helene and Milton departed.
“It’s one thing to be available and support our customers, but when we can see the impact at the street level, it’s rewarding,” Wood said. “We’ve had numerous patrons and first responders come up to our drivers to express their appreciation and thank them for continuing
to work amid tough conditions. Many of our drivers were initially evacuated, and then returned to find their homes damaged, but they still reported to work and made fuel deliveries, so we could meet the community’s needs.”
Wood’s team is delivering the same steadfast level of support for 7-Eleven.
SWTO’s dedicated fleet of trucks and tank trailers compliments the fuel retailer’s collection of common carriers as it grows through acquisitions, including Speedway in 2021 and 204 Sunoco
stores in 2024, and the expansion of its 7FLEET diesel network, providing invaluable in-house capacity and insight that continues to evolve as the company founded in 1963 as Wilco Transportation transitions to “SWTO 2.0.”
“Ultimately, our success depends upon how well we can service our customers,” said William Eckard, 7-Eleven senior director of fuels transportation. “By leveraging our third-party carriers and SWTO, we were able to resupply fuel to our stations within days [of those storms], rather than weeks. Operating a proprietary fleet also gives us unique insight into the transportation industry, revealing both opportunities and challenges that led us to adopt a more commercially driven fuels transportation strategy.
“This knowledge allows us to identify market opportunities while better
understanding the issues that our partners face every day—and well positions us to strengthen these critical thirdparty relationships.”
SWTO started as the fuel delivery fleet for A.T. Williams Oil Company. It morphed into WilcoHess, and later Hess Oil, before then-Marathon Petroleum Company subsidiary Speedway acquired Hess Corp.’s assets in 2014 and renamed the fleet Speedway Transport Operations (SWTO). The Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based trucking operation turned into SWTO after 7-Eleven purchased Speedway.
The company now runs more than 200 trucks and 230 trailers spread across 10 states in the Southeast U.S., with 450 drivers serving 1,400-plus 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes convenience stores. After delivering 1.3 billion gallons of fuel three years ago, SWTO is on pace to deliver 2 billion gallons of fuel—or roughly one load every three minutes—while traveling over 22 million miles in 2024.
“Customer service is a top priority, and our view is: Who prioritizes our stores, and keeps them supplied, more than we do?” Wood said. “Operating a more agile private fleet also provides greater flexibility, allowing our internal customer to capture market advantages and quickly adjust for supply disruptions.
“It’s a valuable component in an integrated fuel supply system.”
SWTO domiciles trucks near gasoline and diesel loading racks to maximize productivity and minimize empty miles. One of Wood’s top goals is to optimize availability in historically strained or vulnerable markets. “We work very closely with SEI,” he said. “If you look at our overall value proposition, we provide a cost-competitive carrier alternative, which requires us to manage our cost structure as our common carriers do; and we facilitate a fully integrated model by deploying our resources to best support the fuel supply team.
“And value creation goes beyond trucking logistics, meaning our true
value is on the fuel supply side, more than on the transport side. But the logistics component remains a critical element of an integrated fuel supply chain.
Without our professional drivers, our products wouldn’t make it to market.”
Industry associations are enhancing SWTO’s value. The company recently secured U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2024 SmartWay High Performer status and was one of the Women in Trucking Association’s “Top Companies for Women to Work For in Transportation” last year. “Our participation in efforts geared specifically toward supporting a diverse workforce through associations such as Women
in Trucking is paramount,” said Sarah Burns, SWTO transport scheduling and planning manager, who also was part of the Truckload Carriers Association’s first Elevate leadership class.
SWTO Version 2.0
SWTO continues to elevate its status by expanding organically and inorganically, leveraging lessons learned during the Great Recession and Covid-19 pandemic, and pursuing its strategic plan to bolster customer service, employee satisfaction, and profitability by reimagining the organization’s mission.
The Sunoco transaction included SWTO’s first fleet acquisition, which
added 20 trucks in a new market (West Texas), and introduced Gravitate’s artificial intelligence-powered software to logistics coordinators. Gravitate’s integrated supply optimization and dispatch solution is better suited for SWTO’s cohesive approach to fuel supply and transportation than its current transportation management system (TMS), Wood said, unlocking “maximum value capture” with an intuitive user interface. “The launch went smoothly, and Gravitate’s transaction speed and accurate demand forecasting have impressed our transport scheduling and planning team,” Burns agreed.
Leaders expect the TMS to advance the 2.0 initiative launched after SWTO’s divestiture from Marathon, which oversaw SWTO’s fuel supply before Speedway joined 7-Eleven. “We needed to reconceptualize SWTO to prepare for the combination with SEI,” Wood explained. “It was a paradigm shift from support organization to standalone, commercially viable trucking operation.” The intent is to create customer value by providing efficient and reliable services that make SWTO the preferred fleet for 7-Eleven’s family of brands, the employer of choice for professional drivers, and the safest carrier on the road.
Components include establishing a trucking-specific support structure, measuring business performance and comparing it to market alternatives,
developing a brand-boosting Employee Value Proposition (EVP), and creating a collaborative “Fleet Safety Center of Excellence” that algins SWTO’s safety policies, procedures, and standards with driver training, technologies, and functional disciplines. “Our strategic vision demands an emphasis on safety,” said Ronnie McCoy, SWTO fleet safety, compliance, and training manager. “Being the safest carrier on the road helps protect our drivers and the motoring public, and directly ties into providing the highest level of service for our customers.”
The expansion of 7-Eleven’s 7FLEET trucker services complements the 2.0 strategy. “The driver demographic is shifting,” stated Marissa Schneider,
7-Eleven commercial fleet director. “Increasingly, drivers are attracted to fueling at the stores they grew up with because they feel cleaner, safer, and have familiar offerings. Our national presence, combined with our brand awareness, positions us to compete for their business. They must be able to depend on our sites for reliable fleet and truck payment acceptance, along with competitive pricing and parking availability.”
SWTO’s EVP is the cornerstone in its 2.0 blueprint. A modified version of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, it starts with essentials like compensation, benefits, and equipment and moves up through integral safety and security, engagement, recognition, and careerpath elements. “Our EVP has allowed us to build out, improve, and educate our drivers on our employment offering,” Wood clarified.
“We believe it gives us a competitive edge in a tight labor market.”
The approach is paying off, helping SWTO “significantly” decrease driver turnover and improve morale, Wood added; and the new “Hourly PLU$” pay program, designed to simplify and modernize compensation, is a powerful recruiting tool. The hybrid system combines hourly, per-delivery, and per-mile rates, providing drivers a predictable paycheck and an opportunity to improve
pay through productivity. “Almost every driver hired by driver referral in the past three years is still active, proving our incentive plans support recruiting and retention efforts,” said Krystal Copher, SWTO human resources supervisor.
Internal recognition includes the “Driven by Excellence” program, which uses performance measurements to identify and recognize top performers, and the “Gold Oval Club” established in 2023 with 11 inaugural members. Six more entered the club this year. “Most ‘million-mile’ programs skip a year if a driver is involved in a preventable crash,” McCoy said. “At SWTO, our professional drivers must achieve 10 consecutive years without a preventable crash. Recognition dinners, social media posts, trophies, special blazers, and Gold Oval patches for their uniforms, are some of the ways we celebrate these remarkable professionals and ensure they receive the recognition they deserve.”
SWTO’s “fleetSMART” safety training includes Smith System computer-based lessons and DriverDirect classroom courses led by certified trainers, Luma’s learning management system, monthly safety meetings, regulatory compliance education, and company-specific instruction on programs, policies, and procedures. “We’re unwavering in our commitment to upholding the highest safety standards, regardless of external pressures or industry practices,” said Roger De Guimerá III, SWTO fleet operations manager for four states. “Our goal is for every employee to perform their duties safely and return home to their families every day.”
Nicky Yelverton, SWTO fleet operations manager for North Carolina and Virginia, concurred, insisting it’s “the leadership and operations teams’ responsibility” to make sure everyone safely completes every shift.
That also requires them to provide the safest equipment on the road.
“Equipment is very important,” Wood affirmed. “Aside from the image aspect, drivers want equipment they know is
safe, reliable, and comfortable.” SWTO’s mixed fleet of daycab tractors includes Mack Anthems, Peterbilt 579s, and Freightliner Cascadias acquired in the Sunoco deal. “We still prefer a limited number of platforms with similar specs, but to keep trade cycles where we need them, we’ve reduced our dependency on a single provider,” Wood said. All Macks and Peterbilts have automated transmissions; air disc brakes; remote diagnostic capabilities; Bendix Wingman Fusion 2.0 packages with front and side warning systems, emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and electronic stability; cameras; and Michelin X tires.
Four-compartment, 9,200-gallon DOT 407 Heil trailers feature Betts emergency valves, Dixon FloTech overfill systems, and Hendrickson air-ride suspensions with Intraax lift axles and Tiremaxx tire inflation. Newer models also boast Tank Ai intelligent trailer technology, including Drōv-powered temperature, weight, and wheel-end sensors; rear-, side-, and load-facing cameras; and automated tire inflation and deflation; as well as LightGuard safety lighting and LoadGuard theft alerts.
SWTO recently corrected trade cycles caused by supply chain disruptions in 2021 and 2022 to reduce “higher-than-normal” maintenance costs. The company aims to replace trailers every 15 years and tractors every five years to cycle out older units before warranties expire. “The success of our maintenance program relies on the overall execution by everyone here, and the results show every day in the equipment we have available,” said Mark Lowe, SWTO fleet maintenance and reliability manager.
Their important work is ongoing.
SWTO recently opened a fifth service center in Tampa, Florida, to boost uptime and employee satisfaction. “We currently provide in-house maintenance on about 45% of our units,” Lowe said. “By ‘insourcing’ more of our fleet maintenance, we can minimize the lag time from third-party vendors, deliver improved quality controls that allow
for better equipment utilization, and increase driver morale.”
Leaders also continue to build out their SWTO 2.0 EVP with new driver ambassador and development programs, communications platforms, and community engagement efforts, while expanding the 7FLEET diesel network, and the fleet’s involvement in industry associations like the National Private Truck Council and National Tank Truck Carriers, which recently appointed Wood to its Safety & Security Council as Southern region chair.
His NTTC goals include developing a safety benchmark and best practices, enhancing training initiatives—and leading SWTO to a North American safety championship.
“The SWTO team continues to exceed my high expectations for their impact on 7-Eleven and SEI Fuels,” said Sean Duffy, 7-Eleven executive vice president for fuels. “I am very proud of and grateful for all the truck drivers, diesel technicians, and logistics coordinators on the team, and what they do for our stores every day.” BT

BELOIT, Wisconsin—STE president Chris Sipe just wanted to compete. He’s convinced his company creates highly desired stainless steel tank trailers, but capacity constraints were keeping him from meeting greater demand, growing market share, and evolving beyond STE’s reputation as a manufacturer of “one-off,” highly customized products, so something needed to change.
The Hendricks family agreed—and decided they want STE to win.
“Our owners don’t like being No. 2 or No. 3 in a space,” Sipe said. “They like to be No. 1, and they’re willing to do what it takes to make that happen.”
Sipe gave them three options: Shutter the struggling operation, shift to a smaller structure, and embrace the boutique-brand identity, or “invest significantly” in expanding the enterprise. “I guess I’m fortunate that the day I put everybody’s jobs on the line, they picked Option 3,” he reflected.
The overwhelming result is a highly automated, 400,000-sq.-ft. greenfield site directors deliberately designed for tank trailer production. “It’s massive— with an amazing amount of thought and innovation under one roof,” said Calvin Ewell, president of long-time STE customer H.R. Ewell, who recently toured the facility.
Most significantly, STE’s new plant is right here, in Beloit, Wisconsin, U.S.A.
“That’s who we are,” said Brent Fox, president and CEO of Hendricks Holding Co., STE’s parent. “We’re very proud, very patriotic, and we love our country, and the people who worked hard and sacrificed themselves to help preserve this great nation we live in. So we’re highly motivated to take a company with a right to exist and do everything we can to make it viable, in America, with quality products built by Americans.”
An American story
Alex Falch and Don Rostad founded Stainless Tank and Equipment Company (STE) in 1966 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, after previously working for Dairy Equipment Company in nearby Madison. Paul Krueger, who perfected the design
A
of STE’s chemical, dairy, and sanitary tank trailers as chief engineer, joined STE as part owner in 1973. He and Falch met at Krueger Fabricating, which was founded by Krueger’s grandfather as Paul Krueger and Company and later acquired by Dairy Equipment, before Falch left the company.
STE, then owned by Jim Hammis, relocated to Beloit Corporation’s northernmost campus, a foundry erected in 1912 to build papermaking machines, after it closed down in 2000. But the trailer manufacturer soon fell on hard times, so Ken Hendricks, co-founder of Hendricks and ABC Supply—and late husband of Hendricks Chairman Diane Hendricks— rescued it from receivership in 2006. “It employed a lot of hard-working people, and he didn’t want those jobs to go away,” explained Fox, Diane’s eldest son.
“So he chose to find a way to make STE work, and it’s been difficult.”
Sipe, who previously worked at Stoughton Trailers, joined STE in July 2019 with the goal of revitalizing the operation. He’s grown average order size from 1.4 to 10-plus trailers, but he realized early on STE would never flourish in an ancient facility filled with low,
leaky roofs and tight turns that wasn’t intended for 53-ft. products. “Today, we’ve got the best 94,000 sq. ft. of ‘spaghetti-bowl’ manufacturing around,” he joked.
“All we do is move left, right, and recross our steps—and that’s one of the most inefficient ways to build a trailer.”
That’s why current production is limited to 400 units per year.
“We tried making it work without putting a lot of money into it, so we’d pick up a new piece of equipment here and there, but we finally came to the conclusion that the only way we were going to make STE successful and sustainable long term—for ourselves and our customers—was with a significant investment,” Fox said.
Sipe started dreaming of a modern trailer manufacturing facility—and how to convince ownership to buy in—during the Covid-19 pandemic, which he called “a blessing and a curse” for STE. “Covid gave us the opportunity to really think about it, meet people, and dive into the market—and the tank trailer business is one of the best businesses to be in,” he
said. “It’s still filled with mom-and-pops, and a lot of great people in an industry that moves critical commodities across the country.”
When Sipe was certain he could defend his position, he finally made his pivotal pitch in late 2022. After piquing owners’ interest, Sipe hired an industrial engineering firm to help him refine the building’s basic design and cost, and Fox officially endorsed the project in early 2023. Then they enlisted Pravda Quinones to develop and implement a transformative business strategy.
Sipe and Quinones, STE executive vice president of supply chain and operations, continuous improvement, and manufacturing, worked together at Stoughton, but she began her 30-year career in Mexico, giving her a unique understanding of Mexican and U.S. operations, and how to win in both. “Maquiladoras” leverage cheaper labor and process discipline, but they’re not as technologically advanced and face other challenges, like higher taxation, and logistics and distribution expenses, Quinones said. So she seized the opportunity to optimize a U.S.-based operation with the right mix of skilled craftsmen and innovative robotics to produce equipment both exceptional, and economical.
“There’s a balance point where you can bring value to the customer and the company by understanding the right level of automation, overhead, and install capacity to create a good value proposition,” she said. “Customers are
willing to acknowledge the power of ‘Made in America’—up to a certain point. So we have to be competitive on our pricing.”
Quinones’ work included securing a “front-to-back,” customer-centric supply chain, solidifying STE’s pipeline of materials and components, spacing equipment so it flows efficiently from sourcing to shipping, and protecting STE’s budget while operating two facilities in the transition. The final piece was site selection, and leaders picked the 46-acre tract just outside Beloit’s current city limit to plant the company’s 132-ft.tall, 50-ft.-by-80-ft. American flag—well within sight of Interstate 90 traffic.
“Once we had a number we thought would deliver a sustainable business with an acceptable return, we moved forward,” Fox said.
Purpose-built tanker plant
STE broke ground at its ground-breaking location Aug. 6, 2023.
Built by Corporate Contractors, Inc. (CCI), a Hendricks-owned construction company, the advanced facility features over 1,000 feet—or more than three football fields—of straight-line manufacturing with 38-ft.-high ceilings, 13 service bays, 56 total bay doors, and two covered pavilions for equipment storage and trailer presentation. It also boasts modern offices filled with natural light—three of which are dedicated to long-time dealers—a fitness center, and large common area where employees can gather to eat and socialize.
“We’re trying to create a total employee and customer experience,” Sipe said.
One of Sipe’s favorite aspects is an enclosed tank trailer showroom that provides a perfect backdrop for an upstairs meeting room. “I wanted a place where we could show off our products in February, in Wisconsin—without shivering,” he said.
Designers mapped the factory’s layout with input collected at several vendor and customer “summits,” where STE secured fleet support and discussed incremental volume increases, and ship-through and consignment programs, with suppliers. STE leaders also continue to tweak designs and processes, including finetuning lean manufacturing “takt times” and enhancing safety features through “5S” methodology and SQDC (safety, quality, delivery, and cost) principles. The building’s cavernous shop floor eliminates cramped spaces and fall hazards, like steps, cords, and component clutter, and includes an isolated area for carbon fixturing, a self-contained interior building for processing insulation, and a 100,000gallon underground water tank for fire suppression.
“From a safety standpoint, this facility steps up the game significantly,” Sipe said.
The purpose-built plant also incorporates new equipment and technology leaders insist will enhance safety, efficiency, and output while simultaneously boosting STE trailer quality, durability,
and value. The vertically integrated operation will feed four “tank-agnostic” production lines through a “coil-based” program, which enables STE to receive, flatten, cut, and form cold-rolled steel for barrel construction; and finish trailers with end caps shaped in house using a hydroforming machine. Sipe didn’t want to reveal all the automation in between, but it’s concentrated in the “high-labor-input” stages of the manufacturing process, and includes a high-tech laser cutting machine that cuts, sorts, and stores parts.
“This is definitely a state-of-the-art facility,” said Cindy Fittery, president of STE dealer Hy-Tec. “After 36 years in the industry, I was pleasantly surprised to see this level of technology in tank trailer production.”
People-centric employer
STE does not plan to replace people with robots, Sipe said.
On the contrary, the Hendricks family is determined to defend local jobs and buoy Beloit’s economy. That’s why they bought the Beloit Country Club, kept a minor-league baseball team in town by helping fund and build ABC Supply Stadium—and invested more than $100 million in STE’s awe-inspiring expansion. “When Beloit Corp. closed, thousands of jobs went away overnight, so they made it their mission to replace those jobs,” Sipe said. “And I’m proud to say that, by reinvesting in Beloit over the years, they have brought many of those great blue-collar jobs back to this community.”
All 167 employees eventually will move to the new facility, increasing machine-assisted production capacity to 2,400 trailers on two shifts. Sipe’s goal is to employ 300 people within the first four years—and eventually make over 3,000 trailers per year—and with jobs for new- and old-school welders, including computer programmers, cobot operators, specialty builders, and repair technicians, he isn’t worried about finding help. “These aren’t just jobs we’re creating,” Sipe said. “They’re careers.” Hendricks’ backing also unlocks Fortune
500 benefits, making STE a “destination employer” with low turnover.
“People truly want to work here because they’re treated so well,” Sipe said. STE customers receive the same first-class care.
In addition to running Hendricks Holdings, Fox sits on the board of ABC, which boasts more than 900 locations, 10,000 trucks, and 22,000 associates. But he’s still happy to accompany Sipe on fleet visits—and give his cell number to anyone who asks.
“The people we’re talking to are excited about our ownership,” Fox said. “That’s what makes this so attractive. We’re patriotic, we’re accessible, we’re invested, and we have the financial horsepower to deliver for our customers and associates.”
Construction workers were pouring concrete for heavy equipment slabs, installing a net in the pavilion rafters to prevent birds from roosting, and adding a door to the wall that divides the service and manufacturing areas when Bulk Transporter toured the facility in October. Sipe expected substantial completion in November.
The company is planning to move into the facility in January, and targeting April 2025 for a celebratory grand-opening. “Big customers in the tank trailer industry, including fleets and distributors, are very engaged with us right
now, and they’re telling us this plant can’t turn on soon enough,” Fox said.
STE will test equipment, validate processes, and manufacture tank trailers at its future and former facilities for the first several months. Sipe expects Lines 1 and 2 to be fully operational in April, and all four lines by July. He also plans to continue growing the company’s capabilities and services, including developing new polyisocyanurate insulation processing and installation technology, and expanding parts sales.
“Through the research that we’ve done, and the meetings we’ve had with carriers and fleets, we know a lot of people are as excited about our new facility as we are,” Sipe said. And that’s saying a lot because STE employees new and old are “incredibly excited” about this monumental opportunity, Quinones added. They now have the chance to help advance a more than 100-year-old industry—and make next-generation tankers with 95% U.S.-sourced parts—here in the heart of small-town U.S.A.
“There is a lot of pride in the people who got us here; and the talent coming in, the new people we’ve added, including myself, have a very good understanding of why we signed on, and what we’re trying to build,” she said.
“We’re putting our stamp on a project that we strongly believe will make history—and evolve the way we manufacture tanks.” BT
Founder’s philosophy fuels expansion of facilities, upfit services
by Jason McDaniel
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — By all accounts, Jack Olsta, founder of The Jack Olsta Co., was a dynamic, relationship-driven, joyful figure who cared deeply about his community, customers, and employees. He also loved serving the tank truck industry and continued to visit the Huntsville office long after retiring in 2008, providing an invaluable resource for the people now committed to furthering his legacy.
“Jack was a lot of fun,” recalled John Olsta, Jack’s son and president of the company. “He’d come in, stir up the pot, then go to his office.”
Tragically, Jack suffered a life-changing fall—while still doing what he loved in his shop—in February 2020, beginning a long battle he finally lost this year. The Jack Olsta Co.’s namesake creator died April 27 at 81 years old. But even as family and friends mourn his substantial loss, the firm he founded is flourishing, with more growth over the last two years than any other period in its history, adding new systems, services, products, and facilities, including an expansive truck “rig-out” and blower shop.
And those involved are certain Jack is smiling down, a twinkle in his eye.
“Dad regularly told anyone who would listen that what we were doing was beyond his wildest dreams,” John reflected. “He was incredibly pleased by this team’s accomplishments, the growth, and everything the organization has become.
“To the end, he was very proud of what these guys do and how they do it.”
‘Bootstrap business’
Jack started Olsta Co. in 1987 as a trailer dealer after spending 22 years with Heil Trailer. John initially didn’t follow him, instead entering industrial sales after graduating from Texas A&M. But business ownership always intrigued him, so he joined Jack in the family business in 1998. “Nobody grows up saying they want to be in this industry,” John said. “It’s not particularly sexy, but it’s a good industry. The people are great, they’re accessible, and it’s rewarding to be in what we call a ‘bootstrap business’ that’s essential to the U.S. economy.”
Father and son set out side-by-side to make Olsta Co. an indispensable partner to customers through the Southeast over the next 10 years, adding and expanding used tank trailer sales, leasing, parts, and services with help from Taylor Craigen, vice president; Mark Holly, used sales manager; and Chris Kern, who oversees new equipment sales and leasing. Along the way, the Olsta Co. team internalized the relational approach to business Jack exhibited in every interaction. “We watched how he cared for people, and we continue to emulate that today,” Holly said. Jack stepped back at 65, and John purchased the business in a seamless 2012 transaction—ensuring it remained a family-first firm.
“We’re still nimble enough that we can respond quickly,” Holly asserted. “We can make rapid decisions and keep customers’ best interests at heart. Jack had a saying: ‘Do good business with good people.’ We can’t make everybody happy, but we can look for customers who value us as much as we value them.”
Employees value John’s visionary leadership. While Jack was a “hands-on, and very technical” manager, John sought to create a fully empowered institution. “He hires the right people and gives them the responsibility, rope, and resources to grow their business segments,” Craigen said. Holly is equally appreciative of John’s style, but John insists he’s only doing his job, which
includes aligning talent with opportunity. “He’s calm and thoughtful in his decisions, and it’s not about him,” Craigen said. “It’s about his team.” And John insists that assembling the industry’s best team is his greatest accomplishment to date.
“Everybody talks about the quality of people we have,” he said. “They tell me that all the time—and they’re right.”
Olsta Co. isn’t done taking its operation to new heights, either.
The company, which acquired Pneumatic Technology (PneuTech) in a 2017 transaction that solidified its position as a market-leading supplier to the dry bulk industry, recently expanded its blower and truck rig-out operation under Spencer Ehlert; and hired Joe Kogut— previously director of transportation for a bulk liquid services company—as CEO of sister company Tank Works to supervise Ehlert, and Olsta Co.’s expanding equipment services.
“Spencer is an impressive guy with a ton of knowledge,” Kogut raved. “His ability to talk to customers, explain what he’s thinking, deal with mechanics to lay things out, and make sure they’re done properly—combined with his technical background—is amazing. We’re well-positioned in a market with a need.”
Ehlert, a graduate of nearby Sam Houston State, joined the Olsta Co. team 13 years ago. He started in trailer sales, where he worked with OEMs on equipment spec’ing and warranty issues; switched to selling blowers after the PneuTech addition; returned to Huntsville after Olsta Co. partnered with Gardner Denver for mobile product distribution in Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas; and led Olsta Co. into the truck upfitting business five years ago, initially at the Tank Works location in Waxahachie, Texas.
“Spencer is incredibly well suited for the work he does,” John said. “He’s knowledgeable, very gifted, and his people are highly capable.”
The growing division moved into the Olsta family’s old pole barn at the 12-acre Huntsville headquarters in 2021, and then a new facility last year. The “shop on the hill” now boasts 22,500 sq. ft. and 18 bays. “We already had the know-how and desire to rebuild and install blowers,” Ehlert said. “Now we have the space.” He’s aiming to refurbish “hundreds” of blowers this year for dry bulk customers across the U.S. who previously struggled to secure a reputable partner. “It’s difficult for customers to
find a quality rebuilder who can take a blower apart, evaluate it, and provide honest feedback on the unit’s condition,” Ehlert explained. “That’s critical because trust is everything, and based on our feedback, the customer can decide how they want to proceed.”
Olsta Co. is factory certified for new and remanufactured Gardner Denver blowers but can rehabilitate and rig up any make or model. Ehlert’s team also can equip pumps, compressors, wet kits, and any other hydraulic or shaftdriven equipment; fabricate diesel- and electric-powered blower package units; and tackle custom builds like a self-contained fuel transfer trailer in the shop when Bulk Transporter visited. “We love special projects because we get to think outside the box,” Ehlert said.
The company stands behind its work, too, offering a one-year warranty on blower rebuilds.
“We’re excited about what we’re doing here,” Ehlert enthused. “It’s been a new adventure for the company. We’ve always been in tanks. That’s what we know. But since I’ve been here, it’s been neat to see the progression from tank trailer sales into parts, and now we have this shop where we’re focusing on other things, like rigging up and working on equipment. That’s a new chapter in the Jack Olsta story.”
Upfitting isn’t the only thing Olsta Co. is up to.
The company added nearly 40,000 sq. ft. of space in Huntsville over the last two years, doubling the size of its administrative offices, parts warehouse, and the old family barn that now serves as a dedicated, fully renovated hose shop. Olsta Co. maintains a “substantial” parts inventory across distribution points in Morris, Illinois; Lawrenceville, Georgia; Huntsville; and Fort Worth, where the company also is close to completing a new parts building adjacent to its second Tank Works facility. “We don’t have a problem keeping inventory on the shelf for customers if that’s what we need to do to garner their business,” said Craigen,
who took over the parts division after 22 years leading new trailer sales.
Olsta Co. still is adding new parts lines, too, including BearCat Pumps, which offer increased capacity and external ball bearings for demanding oilfield services. “It outperforms any other crude oil pump on the market,” Ehlert asserted.
The company expanded its hose service and facility at customers’ requests. Olsta Co. now can construct, band, crimp, and test stainless-steel, rubber, and plastic hoses for petroleum, chemical, dry bulk, and food-grade transfers. “The additional capacity for the Huntsville hose shop and parts warehouse allows us to service a broader customer base, and gives us greater depth with existing customers,” Craigen said.
They can also serve customers in person or 24/7 online through the olstaco.com and pneutechtrailer.com ecommerce websites. “I don’t understand what our IT team does, but I’m
glad they’re able to do it,” Craigen said. “I throw out ideas and then they make them happen.”
Trailer sales and leasing
Craigen helped Olsta Co. become one of the country’s largest tank trailer dealers before Kern inherited the division. The company represents Wabash for stainless-steel trailers and Heil Trailer for aluminum tankers in 13 states east of Texas and Oklahoma, and recently added Exosent Engineering’s distinctive LPG pressure vessels. “We were looking for an opportunity to sell a line of MC-331s, and we’re just down the road from Exosent [in Navasota],” said Kern, who left the life insurance business to team with Olsta Co. in 2010.
With OEM backlogs dwindling, “lower-than-normal” tank trailer capital expenditures are the “outlier” in an otherwise “solid” year, John shared. But Olsta Co. also maintains a diverse lease fleet that includes fiberglass-reinforced
plastic (FRP) trailers, helping carriers forced to allocate funds toward truck purchases and facility improvements continue to refresh trailing stock, meet seasonal demands, and assess new lanes. The company also buys and sells used trailers of all makes and models every day. This year, Holly’s team is aiming to move 500 units—a mark it surpassed in each of the last four years.
“Equipment has been easier to find this year, so folks are looking for deals, and trying to grow or update their fleets with good, late-model equipment that’s readily available,” said Holly, who began focusing on used sales in 2009. Used trailers are thoroughly tested and inspected, and strategically staged across the United States. “Different states have different requirements, so trailers are spec’d differently, and you don’t want to bring a trailer that runs in North Dakota down to Texas,” Holly said.
“So we run it through the closest shop and prep it for sale there.”
Future-focused family firm
New and used tank trailer sales, leasing, parts, hoses, and now rig-outs and rebuilds— Olsta Co. does it all, providing international capacity combined with small-town values. That increasing diversification is helping the company grow through a “weird” geo-political, election-influenced year, but the real goal is to serve customers in any way possible. “Our customers help us grow,” Kern said. “If they continue to trust us to help them solve problems, then we’ll have the opportunity to continue expanding.
“Those ideas go hand-in-hand.”
Now Olsta Co. is using technology to integrate its myriad services.
Guided by Ray Goins, IT manager, and Jaycie Johnson, accounting and business operations manager, the company rolled out a new enterprise resource planning system Jan. 1 to streamline processes and unite business segments inside one software solution. “We had these ideas about what we could be as an
organization, but we had to create a lot of workarounds,” Goins said. “There was a lot of manual effort involved with our old system, which wasn’t flexible enough to grow with us. The new ERP enables greater efficiency, so we can continue building systems that better serve our business segments and customers.
“Now we can more effectively capitalize on all our capabilities.”
Goins’ group also is increasingly using automation to update online pricing and Olsta Co.’s extensive parts catalog, and establishing a “data warehouse” to assist
sales efforts, while the rest of the team continues to expand services. Further plans include utilizing the additional bays in Olsta Co.’s new rig-out shop to improve lease fleet uptime and expanding Tank Works tank container and chassis trailer testing and repair services.
“Dad started a good business that was customer-centric, provided a good product, and added value through our knowledge and service,” John concluded. “All we’ve done is look for other ways to serve our customers.
“It really is that simple.” BT
Kansas City-based tank truck equipment specialist’s new 56,000-sq.-ft. Houston-area facility already is open for parts, maintenance, and repairs—with more services on the way by
Jason McDaniel
LA PORTE, Texas—Jeff Creel primarily worked with tank truck carriers over the last 30 years, including 20 with Linden Bulk Transportation—now part of Groendyke Transport—so he expected to take on a new role after joining Kraft Tank Corporation on the supplier side in April. He didn’t know that job was tour guide.
Creel estimates he’s already led 100 interested parties through Kraft’s new Houston-area mega facility, which opened for parts sales in August, and maintenance and repair services in September. Three crews, including one from Heniff Transportation, arrived the same day Bulk Transporter visited the 56,000-sq.-ft. building on State Highway 225—right in the heart of the country’s petrochemical industry.
“It’s been exciting,” said Creel, officially the general manager for Kraft’s new La Porte location. “When you have
a facility like this, you want to show it off, because in our industry, especially in this area, we’re not used to places this spectacular. So it provides that ‘wow’ factor when customers come in.”
Besides guiding tours, Creel’s been busy growing the location’s staff, parts inventory, and equipment services; gearing up for the next phase of expansion, which includes adding trailer sales and leasing; and preparing the 9-acre property for a grand-opening celebration in the first half of 2025. “[CEO] Spencer [Kraft] handed me the keys and said,
‘Build us a team,’” Creel said. “And we’re fortunate to have this one.
“It’s a phenomenal group with a lot of experience and can-do attitudes.”
Kraft’s La Porte facility houses $1 million in inventory in a 10,000-sq.-ft. warehouse, with a broad selection of foreign and domestic blowers, pumps, hoses, valves, gaskets, lights, axles, suspensions, and myriad other parts, components, and accessories for chemical, crude, dry bulk, and petroleum tankers. Bryan Metcalf, La Porte parts manager, is aiming for $1.75 million in inventory next year.
“Our inventory is growing every day,” shared Metcalf, who previously worked for Trimac Transportation and Superior Carriers (now part of Heniff).
“We’re bringing in new product lines and distributing for more vendors.”
Suppliers include Betts Industries, BTI, Civacon, Dixon Valve & Coupling, Gardner Denver, Girad Equipment, Grote Industries, Hendrickson, Peterson Manufacturing, SAF-Holland, Stemco, Timken, and Truck-Lite.
“We’re stocking heavy,” Creel said.
“We want to be able to service our customers, and we can’t do that if we don’t have what they need on the shelf.”
La Porte’s parts supply supports overthe-counter sales and in-house work. Mechanics were refurbishing, upfitting, and servicing liquid and dry bulk tank trailers when Bulk Transporter toured the 10-bay shop. Heniff’s contingent, including Ken Shafer, director of fleet maintenance, was there to see the facility and inspect an old Coal City Cob unit Kraft was transforming into a like-new, Heniff-branded trailer.
“Customers have been very happy with our inventory and our service,” Metcalf said.
Kraft began renovating the La Porte property, which is right next door to a Depot Connect International tank wash, soon after purchasing it from Louisiana Chemical Company last year. Improvements include upgraded offices and front counter, workstations with buried air and electric lines, and emergency shower and eyewash stations. Newly installed, “top-of-theline” equipment includes a Continental PC440i Crimper with CrimpIQ controller, Gardner Denver air compressor, and Great Lakes air dryer.
The location also has two trucks for deliveries and mobile service, and a yard mule with a hydraulic lift and auto fifthwheel unlock.
But the work of establishing Kraft’s fourth location is ongoing—with the full support of the company’s leaders in Kansas City. “It’s been a total team effort,” Creel said. “They’ve really helped us get this operation up and running. The people in the Kraft organization are phenomenal—and that’s top to bottom.”
Among the next steps are paving the parking lot, adding a 60-ft.-by-100-ft. awning in front of the facility, prepping additional bays to support expansion, and utilizing the building’s two 25-ton overhead cranes for moving heavy equipment. “We’ll offer an exhaustive product line, with new and leased tanks, including FRPs, compressed gas trailers, silos, and more,” Creel said. “Kraft’s lease fleet is very impressive.”
Creel also was close to renewing his Railroad Commission of Texas license to work on MC-331 cargo tanks and
securing La Porte’s R-Stamp with the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors for barrel alterations, while continuing to grow the location’s staff, which had 13 members in September. The goal is to hire 30 mechanics before the facility’s grand opening early next year—when Bulk Transporter will check back in for a deeper dive on Kraft’s expansion plans and market outlook. “We’re changing the game here,” Metcalf concluded. “We’re going to do a lot of things that have never been done in this region.” BT

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—More than 1,000 tank truck industry stakeholders recently descended on the Queen City with the goal of “navigating new horizons,” and they’re moving at “full speed” into 2025 after advancing collective causes with packed committee meetings, informative sessions, and new equipment and technology exhibits here at National Tank Truck Carriers’ Tank Truck Week 2024.
“You can expect NTTC will be aligning your interests with the necessary approach once the dust has settled on the election and we know who is in office, we understand the policies of the Administration, and who we can expect to see in regulatory offices,” Ryan Streblow, NTTC president and CEO, told the trade association’s Board of Directors on Oct. 1 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
“We will adjust our tactics as needed to best serve the tank truck industry.”
American Trucking Associations
President and CEO Chris Spear’s spirited call to action—delivered on the same day port workers walked out, Vice Presidential candidates J.D. Vance and Tim Walz debated, and Hurricane Helene victims desperately pleaded for more government assistance—highlighted the program’s myriad presentations. Spear spoke for 35 minutes about the pressing issues that keep him up at night—emissions, litigation, and workforce—and then spent 15 minutes taking questions to help fill the void vacated by Fox News
co-host Brian Kilmeade, who cancelled his appearance due to the confluence of election-critical events.
“This is—without question—one of the most divisive environments my team and I have ever witnessed,” Spear said. “Every year I say it can’t get any worse, and the next year I’m invited back, and I say, ‘Yeah, it actually has.’
“Budgets are blown, and they get replenished every year without question; there are no performance metrics, no accountability; and you’re really dealing with people who have never worked in a business in their entire lives. So that perspective is really lacking in Washington. That’s where we come in—ATA and NTTC, working together to make certain they understand the importance of this industry, and think of you first before they make decisions, especially decisions that are irreversible.”
Now that the “red wave” is fully upon us, most ATA and NTTC members likely are feeling more optimistic about Washington, especially regarding zero-emission vehicle regulations and timelines. But the overall economic impact of a second Trump presidency remains unclear (see the editorial on page 6 for more).
“On behalf of National Tank Truck Carriers, I would like to congratulate Donald J. Trump on his election as the next President of the United States,” Streblow said after the decision. “We look forward to working closely with the new administration on common-sense solutions that will advance America’s tank truck industry priorities, particularly in enhancing the safety and efficiency of bulk transportation.”
Star-studded tanker affair
Other noteworthy guests included Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration Chief Counsel Melody Drummond Hansen, who addressed attendees Oct. 2 during the annual Safety and Security Awards Banquet at the Westin Hotel; motivational speaker Roger Seip, co-founder of Freedom Personal Development and author of “Train Your Brain for Success;” NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney, who signed autographs at a Wabash event on the JW Marriott Charlotte rooftop; Lindsey Trent, president of Next Gen Trucking; and Usher Transport driver Dave Powell,
NTTC’s reigning Tank Truck Driver of the Year.
New Depot Connect International CEO Chris Synek also made his first Tank Truck Week appearance to introduce Spear.
“I joined DCI one month ago, so I’m here to learn as much as I possibly can,” said Synek, who replaced Scott Harrison after previously serving as CEO of
Neovia Logistics. “I’m excited to learn more about the industry.”
Deliverables delivered in bulk
Tank Truck Week 2024 also boasted 12 educational sessions covering critical operational, regulatory, equipment, and safety issues, including confined-space entry, roadside inspections, tank trailer cybersecurity, and the growing tank container market; 14 meetings, including chemical, advocacy, and workforce committee discussions, and the Tank Cleaning and Maintenance Council’s gathering, and the event-concluding banquet, where NTTC recognized Personnel and North American Safety Contest Grand Award winners, and the Safety Professionals of the Year: Chris Pape, Groendyke Transport vice president of safety and training; Jerry Curl, G&D Trucking/Hoffman Transportation COO; and Brent Bergevin, Love’s Travel Stops executive vice president of transportation.
Lance Hagler, Trimac senior safety director, also welcomed his successor
The future has arrived with TANK Ai, an intelligent suite of technologies introduced by EnTrans to provide visibility and operational efficiency. Using onboard sensors, cloud-based communication, and active monitoring, TANK Ai funnels all data through one device to increase efficiency and reduce the paperwork and staffing needed to track trailer information. This advanced system increases driver accountability and record accuracy, and enhances fleet safety and uptime with proactive maintenance features. When it comes to load security, fleet managers and operators can check the loading and unloading of their trailers no matter where they are on their route.

as Safety and Security Council national chair, Groendyke’s Pape, who Hagler said exudes a “a calm wisdom.” Pape responded by saying he’s ready to hit the ground running to strengthen the council’s mission. “Steel sharpens steel,” he said. “There’s a wealth of knowledge in this room—and if we share more, we’ll get better as a whole.”
Finally, more than 80 leading tank truck industry suppliers showed off the latest equipment, technology, and services on 200,000 sq. ft. of sold-out exhibition space. New products on display included a composite trailer from Australian manufacturer Omni Tanker and EnTrans International distributed by Kraft Tank, a prototype Tank Tech smart tanker system from Wabash, innovative rear lighting technology from Mac LTT, and the new AirDrive hydraulic truck blower system from Apsco and DCI.
“I was very excited to come down and see the latest shiny toys,” said NTTC Chairman Ward Best, Atlantic Bulk Carrier vice president.
Trimac boosts tank cleaning safety Dan Anderson, an industrial hygienist with Trimac Transportation, delivered one of the most interesting presentations at Tank Truck Week after conducting a “Scientific Evaluation of Occupational Health Risks in Tank Cleaning Operations” at select National Tank Services locations. His goal was to identify the correct type of personal protective equipment (PPE) needed for six chemicals, total VOCs, and noise when performing specific tank cleaning tasks—like opening the dome lid, checking for heel, draining it, and washing out and drying the tank—and convey that information to technicians quickly and easily.
“It’s no secret that in our industry we’ve had some deaths over the last few years, and we have regulatory challenges, regulatory expectations, that are very new to our industry that we’re not used to. Nothing is unfounded,” Hagler said. “It’s not that anything is unfair, but those are challenges that we’re not used to facing.
“So we wanted to take more of a scientific approach to safety.”
Anderson joined Trimac last year after more than 20 years evaluating human exposure to chemicals, biologicals, and physical agents in industrial settings, including stints at Chevron Phillips and Lubrizol.
First, Anderson conducted task hazard assessments (TRAs) at multiple locations to determine exposure levels to diphenyl ketone, ammonia, benzene, naphtha, xylene, hexavalent chromium, total VOCs, and noise during various cleaning tasks at multiple NTS facilities using third-party consultants and laboratories to ensure impartiality; and that was no small task itself. Challenges included product variability and mixing, technician and trailer scheduling, and heel-volume differences.
The data collected indicated exposure levels all were below Occupational Safety and Health Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists limits; and Trimac processes, procedures, and controls are effective in controlling the contaminant concentrations, ensuring they don’t present a personnel hazard. “The highest readings were in the center of the wash bay, but even those were less than the action levels,” Anderson said.
Data in hand, Anderson was able to accurately identify the correct PPE for each chemical and cleaning task.
Then came the hard part: “How do we communicate this?” he asked.
“That’s really the big question here, because I can talk about all these fancy
words, and converse with OSHA and NIOSH, or any of those agencies, but how do I communicate that information to the worker in the wash bay?”
The answer: A visual chart that clearly defines the product, compounds of interest, standard operating procedures, hazards, tasks, and appropriate PPE for each task spec’d with national and international codes. The online guide also includes pictures of the required PPE, part number, manufacturer, and vendor code. “Over time, people will learn what goes together at different stages of cleaning,” Hagler predicted.
Trimac is expanding its TRA site and master list weekly, Anderson said.
Going forward, he plans to continue implementing engineering controls that eliminate or reduce exposure risks, evaluating additional products, and training employees on the use of TRA guidance in PPE selection.
The goal is to “make it easier for workers to do the right thing,” Anderson concluded.
There are more than 840,000 tank containers circling the globe today, according to the International Tank Container Organization’s (ITCO) 2024 Global Tank Container Fleet Survey, and that number is expected to continue growing in coming years—both internationally and domestically.
Russell Harrison, president of Tank Service Incorporated, estimated there
are around 25,000 ISO tanks in the Houston area alone at any given time, and about 20,000 tanks strictly for domestic use in the U.S. and Canada, during his ISO Tank Overview at Tank Truck Week. That’s compared to approximately 110,000 total tank trailers in those countries. “If these numbers are accurate, that means about 14% of the liquids that are moved domestically move in ISO tanks right now, and if the

trend continues, it’s certain that number will grow, maybe as high as 20 or 25%,” he predicted.
“Time will tell, but they are becoming more and more of a fixture domestically.”
Greg Vinson, Hydera chief commercial officer and vice president of depot network development, recently forecasted the global fleet will include 1.4 million ISOs by 2030. That’s because container manufacturers, primarily based in China, continue to produce far more ISOs than are retired each year. They made 56,600 last year and 67,856 in 2022, according to ITCO’s latest report. “As the world’s population keeps growing, more and more goods are moved around the globe, including bulk liquids,” Harrison said.
ISO tanks already are widely used in other parts of the world, like Europe, Asia, and Australia, and more U.S. carriers, like Quality Carriers, are adding them to their fleets.
The largest tank container leasing companies and operators also have fleets that dwarf most U.S. tank truck carrier fleets, Harrison pointed out. ISO lessor EXSIF Worldwide boasts 71,159 containers, and Eurotainer and Raffles Lease, who are owned by the same company, have a combined 85,000 units.
The top container operators are Stolt Tank Containers (50,855 ISOs) and Hoyer Group (41,600).
Kraft introduces composite tanker Kraft Tank and its partners introduced the Omni Tanker composite tank trailer during Tank Truck Week. Kraft is the exclusive distributor of the new advanced-composite, “armored thermoplastic” chemical tank trailer built by Australian tank trailer and container manufacturer Omni in a collaboration with Polar Tank—a part of EnTrans International—SAF-Holland, ConMet, and Drōv Technologies, which powers the Tank Ai smart trailer system in Polar and Heil trailers.
The patented Omni technology features a completely seamless inner tank constructed with chemically resistant thermoplastic that boasts a
high-strength, carbon fiber composite makeup with a “high-integrity” interface between the materials. The use of lightweight, high-strength carbon fiber composites for the barrel structure helps to maximize the trailer’s payload capacity and efficiency, Kraft said.
“Ultimately, what do you want to do?” asked Brian Pursley, Kraft Tank director of sales, during a demonstration Tuesday inside the convention center’s exhibit hall. “You want to have a trailer that is versatile, safe, and reliable. This trailer provides that. By being able to haul products with an easy-wash out SOP, you’re able to do backhauls and redeploy assets. You don’t have to have a dedicated trailer for one product. The versatility of this trailer is one of its biggest advantages.”
The tank’s thermoplastic interior delivers a thick and flexible layer that provides “exceptional” durability for hazardous cargoes, resulting in minimal maintenance and no need for relining. It can be washed out easily, prevents
contamination, and keeps chemical cargo pure, maximizing tank utilization in seasonal peaks.
The composite trailer is equipped with SAF-Holland’s CBX AeroBeam fixed-frame air ride suspension system, providing a design technology built upon the supplier’s weight-saving, cast beam
trailing-arm. Axle brake technology includes Haldex disc brakes and brake actuators with ConMet’s lightweight, aluminum PSP7 wheel hub. ConMet’s PreSet Plus system secures the wheels, improves wheel end clamp load, makes installation and hub removal easier, and enhances safety. BT

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky—Wabash displayed a new package of tank trailer technologies during its Wabash Ignite conference with developing features that emphasize safety and connectivity.
The prototype trailer boasted technology features both familiar and new, including seal sensors, extensive camera coverage, automatic lighting, light-out detection, and more.
“I think what separates Wabash’s tank trailer offering is the safety side of the features,” Adam Quinn, director of specialty sales at Wabash, told FleetOwner. “Fleets have been asking for some of these offerings ... and looked at different solutions, but not all as one package. We’re bringing all of this visibility in one package and then adding to it that safety side.”
Here are a few of the in-development tanker’s promising features:
One of the trailer’s standout tools allows for digital verification that a manlid is sealed. The trailer’s Sure-Seal Sensors could help minimize how often employees need to scale tank trailers physically.
“Historically, and even common practice today, is that you have to go up and physically connect the seal and the driver has to check it,” Quinn said. “It’s just not a safe process. ... All that is very manual today.”
Reducing how often drivers have to climb the tank could be a big safety gain. In addition, it provides carriers an additional layer of assurance that the manlid is sealed throughout the trailer’s route. Sure-Seal Sensors could provide notifications of seal opening, seal closing, and cargo tampering events.
The tanker also featured a workspace lighting arrangement around the trailer that would activate automatically as personnel approach.
The Wabash 360 visibility feature uses a system of cameras around the cab to activate lighting around the cab automatically. This adds convenient visibility for anyone working around the trailer, such as during pretrip inspections.

Digital warning of a nonfunctional trailer light was another helpful technology on the tanker.
“There’s a big concern with fines for having mandatory lights out,” Quinn told FleetOwner. “This will actually warn them that there’s a light out prior to leaving. In case it’s missed in the inspection or it happens while you’re driving, it will send a warning that a light has gone out on the vehicle.”
Where tankers often use plastic strap seals, the display trailer showcased metal seals for increased durability.
“The idea is that it’s reusable and also is identifiable to the tank trailer itself,” Quinn explained. “Today, it’s manual. There’s a box of seals and you document the seal number to the trailer. Now, it’ll live with that trailer, essentially. It’s repeatable, this seal belongs in this trailer, and it’s tethered to it.”
All the technologies would be powered and coordinated by a Road Ready Master Control Unit from Clarience Technologies. The MCU’s digital information would be compatible with a variety of other platforms.
“It’s going to be open platform, where it can connect to existing systems,” Quinn explained. “A lot of times the issue with other offerings is that it’s very confined in what you can connect.”
Other standout features of the tanker included temperature sensors, volumetric sensors, tire pressure monitoring, wheel-end event monitoring, and more.
Girard Equipment introduced a new stainless steel hydraulic pump for extreme environments during National Tank Truck Carriers’ 2024 Tank Truck Week in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The new pump, Model GZ 50000, integrates seamlessly with Girard’s hydraulically actuated valves for DOT 407 tank trailers and withstands the most demanding conditions, ensuring “maximum reliability,” Girard reported.
“Built to endure extreme environments, this advanced pump design has undergone extensive testing,” the company stated in a product release. “It has been exposed to aggressive cleaning agents like sodium hypochlorite, high-temperature wash water exceeding 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and sub-zero conditions.
“After more than 1,000 successful cycle tests, the results showed minimal to no wear, solidifying its reputation for unparalleled durability.”
The pump’s key features include:
■ Large sight gauge: Easily monitor fluid levels and color at a glance.
■ Sealed pump body: This body is equipped with sealing tabs and a fill cap that clearly indicates when fluids need replacement, ensuring optimal performance.
■ 100% stainless steel construction: This material provides superior strength and resistance to harsh chemicals, perfect for the tough demands of our industry.
■ Designed for easy retrofitting: The pump fits industry-standard mounts and handles hydraulic fluids and other agents used across various applications.
“The Girard stainless steel hydraulic pump is ideal for operators seeking high performance, ease of maintenance, and reliable safety,” the company said.
TrueTMS recently rolled out new innovations for its TrueLiquid transportation management system (TMS) platform for tank truck fleets, including “breakthrough” forecasting, sourcing, and optimization capabilities. The process starts with accurately forecasting demand and inventory levels for generating bulk liquid commodity orders, TrueTMS reported. It then continues with optimized load planning and routing that minimize deadhead miles and maximizes revenue per mile and hour.
“With these recent updates, we expect TrueFleet and TrueLiquid to become the industry’s benchmark for streamlined order creation, optimized dispatch planning, and delivery,” George Thellman, TrueTMS director of business development and strategic relations, said in a news release.
“By combining automation with a straightforward, highly customizable platform, we opened the door for smaller fleets to access game-changing technology and scale their operations for growth at a rate they never thought was possible.”
The most recent updates for TrueTMS and TrueLiquid include:
■ TrueCast is a fully integrated forecasting model for TrueLiquid. The model uses historical or live tank level readings and considers trailer compartments and capacities to determine optimal delivery times and quantities. By accurately forecasting customer
demand, bulk liquid transporters and fuel haulers can consolidate order volumes to maximize delivery efficiencies.
■ TrueSource is a powerful sourcing extension for TrueLiquid. Created especially for fuel haulers, TrueSource automatically reviews daily pricing and total transportation costs associated with an order to find the lowest-cost commodity from suppliers to fulfill that order.
■ Dynamic Planning is a built-in feature that saves time and empowers users to focus on exceptions rather than mundane planning tasks. It provides users with a “first pass” scheduling option and a queue of orders that don’t fit the initial plan to review.
■ Geotab Integration. TrueTMS and TrueLiquid are now fully integrated with Geotab, a global leader in ELD, telematics, and connected transportation solutions. The integrated TrueTMS
platform enables fleets to automate work and improve decision-making for all areas in the order-to-cash lifecycle. TrueTMS also now offers a “risk-free” program that includes contract buy-out options and free implementation services for tank truck companies that are interested in transitioning to its transportation management system.
The “groundbreaking” program makes TrueLiquid implementation “more accessible,” TrueTMS maintained. The approach allows fleets to experience “cutting-edge” technology benefits without the burden of overlapping contracts.
In addition to contract buy-out credits and free onboarding assistance, TrueTMS is offering:
■ Waived data migration fees
■ A referral program through which customers can earn additional subscription credits
■ A 90-day satisfaction guarantee
Engineered Transportation International is relocating its Jarco tank truck business from Salem, Illinois, to a state-of-the-art facility in Holdingford, Minnesota, in an effort to enhance production capabilities, expand aftermarket support, and leverage EnTrans’ nationwide dealer network to better serve customers.
The upgraded Holdingford facility offers increased production capacity, advanced quality systems, and improved engineering resources, enabling EnTrans to meet the growing demand for Jarco propane and fuel delivery vehicles.
The relocation will lead to substantial improvements in lead times, safety, and quality— ultimately delivering an outstanding customer experience, the company reported.
“We are excited to relocate the Jarco business to Holdingford, Minnesota,” Jake Radish, EnTrans chief commercial officer, said in a news release. “This move not only enhances our production capabilities but also strengthens our ability to provide comprehensive support to our customers. Our full support team, including both inside sales and our extensive outside dealer network, will be more integrated and responsive than ever, ensuring that our customers receive the highest level of service and support.”
The integration of Jarco’s operations into the Minnesota plant is designed to drive new synergies that will enhance efficiency and
quality, while a focus on safety and lean manufacturing principles will ensure the delivery of products with shorter lead times, EnTrans added. This enhanced capacity, combined with a commitment to safety and quality, will position EnTrans to offer world-class delivery of the Jarco product line through a nationwide dealer network.
The transition will begin in Q4 2024 and is expected to be fully completed by the end of Q1 2025. During this period, there will be no disruptions in delivery to customers. The EnTrans team will remain fully operational and available to assist with any needs, ensuring a smooth and seamless transition.
“Our commitment to our customers remains unwavering,” Radish concluded.
“With this move, we are better positioned to offer robust sales, production, and aftermarket services, all supported by a fully integrated team dedicated to improving lead times, safety, quality, and delivery. We are confident that this relocation will result in even better products, services, and an overall customer experience.”
Tandem Concepts recently launched its order-based loading system for fuel terminals in partnership with Eagle Transport Corporation, Global Partners, and Toptech Systems.
Drivers at Global’s Apex, North Carolina, terminal already have processed “hundreds” of transactions using the new order-processing system for liquid bulk distribution with positive feedback, the partners reported.
“As a terminal operator, our priority is to enhance efficiency, minimize downtime, and optimize supply,” Craig Yocham, Global Partners senior vice president of terminal operations, said in a news release. “Tandem significantly addresses these challenges by providing our drivers with a smoother experience and streamlined processes. The digitization of orders also allows us to manage supply more effectively.
“We’re excited to see this technology implemented across all our sites.”
Designed to streamline operations, Tandem’s technology helps to ensure a “seamless” transfer of orders from dispatchers to terminals. Upon a driver’s
arrival, all relevant order details are pre-populated, eliminating delays, minimizing errors, and requiring no additional hardware, the company said.
In addition, digitized order information is transmitted directly to the driver’s tablet after loading, removing the need for manual data entry or scanning. This approach reduces drivers’ workloads, earning praise for its efficiency, accuracy, and ease of use.
“We are thrilled to witness the positive impact our technology is making in the logistics space,” said Drew Stypa, Tandem founder and CEO. “At Tandem, we remain committed to delivering innovative solutions that drive operational efficiency and elevate customer satisfaction. Our scalable system is designed for rapid deployment, and we’re excited to see it quickly expand across the industry.”
The launch marks a pivotal step in enhancing order processing for midstream stakeholders, Tandem maintained. By digitizing workflows and automating processes, Tandem’s solution helps to accelerate financial reconciliation, simplify invoicing, and optimize supplier inventories.
Looking ahead, Tandem said it plans to continue collaborating with industry leaders to enhance their logistics technology.
“Toptech Systems is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate on streamlining the order-based loading process at the terminal,” said John Ardito, Toptech commercial director of sales. “This technology will benefit the entire terminal ecosystem, including terminal owners, drivers, carriers, and suppliers.”
