LET’S CELEBRATE NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH (SEPT. 15 - OCT. 15, 2024)

National Hispanic Heritage Month will soon be in full swing, and I’m pleased to have this opportunity to shine a spotlight on the rich cultural and historical connections of the Hispanic community in Oklahoma, and within Epic.

More than 4,000 Epic students and staff identify as Hispanic.

Influential in the state since earliest recorded history, much of Oklahoma’s Western heritage has its origins in Hispanic culture. Spanish-speaking conquistadors were the first non-indigenous group to explore the region. After our founding as a state in 1907, the Hispanic culture continued to grow and evolve in the Sooner state with families coming from countries including Venezuela, Guatemala and Cuba.

Today, approximately 10% of the Oklahoma population are Hispanic and Latino. Join me in celebrating the significant contributions this community has made for our state and our school.

WHAT’S IN A MICRO SITE?

EPIC CONTINUES TO GROW ITS MEETING SPACES STATEWIDE

With an aggressive goal of having at least one in-person learning facility – or micro site – in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties, the state’s third-largest public school system is making one thing very clear: Epic is open for business in a town near you!

A micro site is an Epic-run, dedicated space for students and teachers to meet. Currently, Epic operates 36 micro sites, coming close to meeting its short-term goal of 40 sites in the top counties it serves.

“We provide a higher level of security, and child-friendly décor, creating a safe, comfortable and engaging environment for teachers to meet with their students,” said Shawna Salkil, deputy superintendent of operations for Epic. “We want to provide our students and families with a learning space that is custom designed to meet their educational needs.”

Epic growing its micro-site footprint statewide not only provides learning spaces closer to where students live but also increases the level of engagement in those communities.

“If we are going to ask our families to invest their trust in us with the care of their little ones, we should be willing to invest in them, too,” Salkil said. “It’s really about partnership.”

Mandy Hightower, an Epic site acquisition specialist, is responsible for identifying and securing the school’s micro sites. She said the top priority for seeking out a location is the number of students it can serve and overall safety. Visibility and community presence is a close second, she said.

“When we’re looking, we’re trying to find something that has good visibility, that it’s centrally located, because we want people to see Epic,” Hightower said. “That’s one of our big goals is for people to know where Epic is, that it’s there for them, that it’s there for their kids.”

She said the biggest challenge in procuring sites is size and appropriateness. For example, sites that are close to bars, dispensaries or other adult-themed locations are not considered. Also, finding sites that are move-in ready that can accommodate a large number of students is a challenge.

“There’s not a lot of real estate in Oklahoma, especially in small towns,” Hightower said. “We can’t move into a 1,500-square-foot building, which is just not sufficient for the number of students we have.”

All Epic micro sites are staffed by customer experience team members, who can assist with everything from enrollment to returning school-owned hardware. Hightower said as important as it is to have a safe, dedicated space to meet, allowing communities to see Epic provide for their students goes a long way, too.

“I think generally people are excited to have us because they may have this building that has sat empty for months or years, and to see someone who wants it and wants to revitalize it and put students in it,” she said. “Overall, people are excited to see us helping the students.”

NON-TRADITIONAL IS THE NEW NORMAL EPIC CAREGIVERS COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

The word “Normal” is defined as “conforming to a standard; usual, typical or expected.”

However, with some 30,000 students in its care, Epic’s families are a diverse group, weaving a tapestry of different cultures, origins and structures.

Non-traditional caregivers – aunts and uncles, grandparents, brothers and sisters, single parents and so on – sometimes experience isolation because they don’t fit the norm. But despite the struggles, many of them say that Epic is the best choice they’ve made when it comes to educating their students, largely due to the flexibility and options available.

Wade Blevins adopted his cousin’s granddaughter, Brailynn, when she was four years old. She started Epic during the pandemic in 2020 and is now in 5th grade. A nationally ranked martial artist, Brailynn gets straight As and is very proud of her two dads.

“Right now, she has no shame in her game. She’s very proud of her family,” Blevins said. “It would break my heart to see that change.”

He said he chose Epic because he never wants Brailynn to endure the kind of bullying and rejection similar families have experienced. For him, Epic is a way to make sure that never happens. Also, he wants other non-traditional families to understand they are not alone.

“I want to let other parents that are in similar situations as us know that you’re not the only one out there and it’s OK,” said Blevins, who works for the Cherokee Nation language department. He and his husband travel across the country promoting Native culture, while making sure Brailynn gets to her martial arts competitions.

Brailynn’s primary educator at home is Blevins’ mother who, in her 70s, sometimes struggles with technology but continues to overcome those challenges because educating Brailynn is a family matter.

“Especially in Native communities, we’ve always lived this way. Children don’t really belong to the parents, they belong to the family,” Blevins said. “We’re just lucky enough that we have that set up.”

Other non-traditional caregivers, such as Tammy Teer, have other challenges to overcome that Epic has made a little bit easier.

Teer is the grandmother of two twins, a boy, Herman, and a girl, Nayeli, both of whom are special eduction students in the 6th grade. She also has a special-needs adult child at home. She said the isolation of being a nontraditionial caregiver can be daunting but that she thinks Epic is the best fit for her family.

“It’s hard as a grandparent sometimes because I’m isolated. Other times I think it’s easier because I’m a problem solver and keep at something until I get an answer,” Teer said. “Best decision I’ve ever made was to take a leap of faith and enroll my grandkids into Epic.”

She said Epic’s clubs and organizations have piqued the interest of her grandchildren, with both of them setting their sights on joining Epic’s Student Council. She added that the school’s Learning Fund has allowed them to purchase microscopes, a telescope and allowed them to explore robotics.

“Against all the naysayers and raised eyebrows, I’ve stuck to it,” said Teer. “At times I’ve felt alone not knowing what to do, hoping I’ve made the right choice.”

EPIC CHESS IS MORE THAN JUST A GAME

There is much more to chess than one may assume.

There is much more to chess than one may assume. Undeniably, each player wants to beat their opponent in swift, calculated moves but it's the life lessons that come from the game that make the true impact. Lessons such as patience, decision making and problem solving set students up for success as they continue their academic journeys.

Going into their second year, the chess club at Epic welcomes students in grades 3-12 of all skill levels. Whether you are a beginner or could give Bobby Fischer a run for his money, there is space for everyone. Karen Hoyt, Epic’s chess advisor recognizes that chess is one of the only games in the world that everyone can play. “You don’t need to speak the same language,” she said.

Hoyt has played chess for many years. She recognizes that chess is an ancient, lifetime game that teaches many skills to students of all levels. There is a little magic to this, knowing the rules to a game that has been around since the sixth century.

The club’s other advisor Christopher Young is a very talented chess player. In the chess world, he ranks just below expert, which, for those who don’t know, is a “big deal!”

“I’m in the A category, right below expert,” he said. “I’m just happy to bring whatever skills I have to our students at Epic.”

Just like golf or tennis, chess is one of those games that you can play all of your life. Chess is the type of game that builds patience, even in this fast-paced society. It allows players to slow down, take the extra time to learn the game and analyze not only their own moves but also their opponents.

Learning about who you are, the talents you acquire and how to use them positively helps encourage students to explore more activities and find pride in what they do. One of the great successes Hoyt has noticed is the ability for students of all abilities to recognize their intelligence, giving them the opportunity to feel smart and empowered.

The chess club meets twice a week virtually. The season has just started, don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and start something new! For more information and to possibly join, please email karen.hoyt@epiccharterschools.org.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

At Epic, we believe the best education addresses not only academics but also a child’s emotional, mental, physical and social needs. We have put together an amazing database of resources throughout the state. We have also created an online interactive map so that families and Epic staff can search for resources within a specific county or area. We hope that these online tools will help connect our families to available resources if they need any type of assistance. (These resources can be viewed on a mobile device but work best on a computer).

We have compiled a list of almost 800 community resources throughout the state of Oklahoma in all 77 counties. This is a valuable resource for our Epic families! You can filter by category, county, or locate statewide resources.

4,000+

The number of Epic students and staff who identify as Hispanic

If you ask Joanna Hernandez why Epic’s Hispanic Programs matter, she will tell you it all comes down to representation, seeing others who look and speak like you in successful settings.

“I didn’t have my first Hispanic teacher until I was in college,” said Hernandez, an Epic Hispanic programs specialist, “and that really played a role in my decision to go into education.”

With more than 4,000 Epic students and staff identifying as Hispanic, the state’s largest statewide virtual charter school takes cultural representation seriously. Assisting students with exploring their own cultures and others is key to preparing them for a future that is becoming increasingly culturally diverse.

“One of the main goals of Epic is to graduate well-rounded individuals and a lot of that means being culturally aware,” said Reyna Tillery, another Epic Hispanic programs specialist. “That kind of representation helps students envision their own potential and aspirations and makes success seem more attainable.”

Hernandez said there are 21 Spanish-speaking countries worldwide, each with their own culture, history and heritage. Exploring these, understanding the array of differences is a main focus of the the Hispanic student organizations within Epic.

Epic’s Cultural Explorers Club focuses on kids in PreK-5th grade, while its Hispanic Student Organization and Junior Hispanic Student Organization are for older students.

“It’s just beautiful to have our Hispanic students share their culture, what makes them unique,” Hernandez said. ”There are so many different countries that you can learn about within the Hispanic community.”

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15-Oct. 15. Epic will take part in Fiestas Patrias on Sept. 15 at the Oklahoma City Community College Festival Grounds. Additionally, Epic will participate in the Fiestas De Las Americas in Scissortail Park in Oklahoma City from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 28.

4,000+

IT’S TIME FOR THE

SPELLING BEE!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Epic is registered with the Scripps National Spelling Bee platform, and this comes with some important information regarding registration for your student.

Epic will host two separate spelling bees, one in the Oklahoma City area and one in the Tulsa area. One winner will arise from each of these areas to move on to the Oklahoma regional spelling bees.

Students who participate in the Epic Oklahoma City area spelling bee must live in specific counties within the state of Oklahoma.

Students who participate in the Epic Tulsa area spelling bee must live in other specific counties within the state of Oklahoma. Please look at the attached map to ensure your student is registered for the appropriate Epic Spelling Bee according to where you currently live.

SPELLING BEES IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES

By inspiring the exploration of words, the Scripps National Spelling Bee illuminates pathways to lifelong curiosity, celebrates academic achievement and enriches communities. All Epic students in grades 3-8 are invited to participate!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Glenpool – Oct 7, 2024

Norman – Oct 14, 2024

1. HOW CAN MY STUDENT PREPARE FOR THE SPELLING BEE?

There is a word list for each grade level that students should study prior to the event. Once a student has registered using the links above, a confirmation email will be sent that contains links to word lists for all grade levels. Scripps also has apps available for Apple and Android users. NOTE: It’s best practice to study your grade-level words along with the grade level above yours. If your grade level competition continues beyond your grade level words, the next grade-lvel words will be used. For example, a 3rd grader should study both 3rd -and 4th-grade words. It is a good idea for each student to be familiar with every word on each grade level

2. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY STUDENT MISSES THE FIRST WORD IN THE COMPETITION? Unfortunately, even if a student misses the first word in their round, they will be eliminated from the competition.

3. WILL THERE BE ANY WORDS GIVEN DURING THE COMPETITION THAT AREN’T ON THE GRADE LEVEL STUDY LIST?

Yes. The study lists are meant to be a starting point and do not contain every word that will be given during the competition. The WORD CLUB app is a great way to take your Spelling Bee study sessions to the next

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH.

At Epic, there’s nothing we take more seriously than the safety and wellness of our students and families. As young minds grow and evolve, there are certainly challenges along the way, some of which can lead to mental health hurdles that can seem difficult to overcome.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month and with the new school year now underway, we wanted to make sure every student in our care knows that Epic has resources available when it seems like there is nowhere to turn for help.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency, the information below can help. Whether that’s calling Epic’s crisis hotline or making an appointment with one of the mental health professionals we partner with, there is help available whenever and wherever you need it.

You are not alone. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, but a sign that you want to remain strong.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR EPIC STUDENTS

Grades PreK-2:

Thriving Together helps younger students and their families understand and control emotions in positive and productive ways. The whole family works through the curriculum together. Available for purchase through the learning fund. Ask your teacher for more information.

Grades 3-12:

Empower U promotes self-awareness, selfmanagement, responsible decision making, relationships skills and social awareness. This course provides an elective credit toward graduation for high school. Ask your teacher about enrolling in the course.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES REQUEST

We partner with counseling agencies in Oklahoma and can refer students to counselors who can help them work through ongoing emotional and behavioral struggles. Students do NOT have to have insurance to receive services, but for those who do, private insurance may be utilized (this will be worked out with the therapy provider).

Teletherapy is available in all 77 counties. Our inperson providers do not have a physical presence in every county, but providers can help families find local, appropriate counseling resources.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States and a major public health concern. When a person dies by suicide, the effects are felt by family, friends and communities. Avoid using terms such as “committing suicide,” “successful suicide,” or “failed suicide” when referring to suicide and suicide attempts, as these terms often carry negative meanings.

WHO IS AT RISK FOR SUICIDE?

People of all genders, ages and ethnicities can be at risk for suicide. The main risk factors for suicide are:

• A history of suicide attempts.

• Depression, other mental disorders, or substance use disorder.

• Chronic pain.

• Family history of a mental disorder or substance use.

• Family history of suicide.

• Exposure to family violence, including physical or sexual abuse.

• Presence of guns or other firearms in the home.

• Having recently been released from prison or jail.

• Exposure, either directly or indirectly, to others’ suicidal behavior, such as that of family members, peers or celebrities.

Most people who have risk factors for suicide will not attempt suicide, and it is difficult to tell who will act on suicidal thoughts. Although risk factors for suicide are important to keep in mind, someone who is showing warning signs of suicide may be at higher risk for danger and need immediate attention.

Stressful life events (such as the loss of a loved one, legal troubles or financial difficulties) and interpersonal stressors (such as shame, harassment, bullying, discrimination or relationship troubles) may contribute to suicide risk, especially when they occur along with suicide risk factors.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE?

Warning signs that someone may be at immediate risk for attempting suicide include:

• Talking about wanting to die or wanting to kill themselves.

• Talking about feeling empty or hopeless or having no reason to live.

• Talking about feeling trapped or feeling that there are no solutions.

• Feeling unbearable emotional or physical pain.

• Talking about being a burden to others.

• Withdrawing from family and friends.

• Giving away important possessions.

• Saying goodbye to friends and family.

• Putting affairs in order, such as making a will.

• Taking great risks that could lead to death, such as driving extremely fast.

• Talking or thinking about death often.

Other serious warning signs that someone may be at risk for attempting suicide include:

• Displaying extreme mood swings, suddenly changing from very sad to very calm or happy.

• Making a plan or looking for ways to kill themselves, such as searching for lethal methods online, stockpiling pills, or buying a gun.

• Talking about feeling great guilt or shame.

• Using alcohol or drugs more often.

• Acting anxious or agitated.

• Changing eating or sleeping habits.

• Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS IN CRISIS:

Call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org. The Lifeline provides free and confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the United States. Call 911 in life-threatening situations.

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS AND THERAPIES ARE AVAILABLE?

Effective, evidence-based interventions are available to help people who are at risk for suicide:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a type of psychotherapy that can help people learn new ways of dealing with stressful experiences. CBT helps people learn to recognize their thought patterns and consider alternative actions when thoughts of suicide arise.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT is a type of psychotherapy that has been shown to reduce suicidal behavior in adolescents. DBT also has been shown to reduce the rate of suicide attempts in adults with borderline personality disorder, a mental illness characterized by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behavior that often results in impulsive actions and problems in relationships. A therapist trained in DBT can help a person recognize when their feelings or actions are disruptive or unhealthy and teach the person skills that can help them cope more effectively with upsetting situations.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I AM STRUGGLING OR SOMEONE I KNOW IS HAVING THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE?

If you notice warning signs of suicide, especially a change in behavior or new, concerning behavior, get help as soon as possible.

Family and and friends are often the first to recognize the warning signs of suicide, and they can take the first step toward helping a loved one find mental health treatment.

If someone tells you that they are going to kill themselves, do not leave them alone. Do not promise that you will keep their suicidal thoughts a secret—tell a trusted friend, family member or other trusted adult.

Call 911 if there is an immediate life-threatening situation.

You also can contact: 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

988lifeline.org

Call or text 988; Llame al 988 (para ayuda en español)

The Lifeline provides 24-hour, confidential support to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Call or text 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.

Support is also available in English via chat at: 988lifeline.org .

Brief Intervention Strategies: Research has shown that creating a safety plan or crisis response plan—with specific instructions for what to do and how to get help when having thoughts about suicide—can help reduce a person’s risk of acting on suicidal thoughts. Staying connected and following up with people who are at risk for suicide also has been shown to help lower the risk of future suicide attempts. Research also has shown that increasing safe storage of lethal means can help reduce suicide attempts and deaths by suicide. In addition, collaborative assessment and management of suicide risk can help to reduce suicidal thoughts.

Collaborative Care: Collaborative care is a team-based approach to mental health care. A behavioral health care manager will work with the person, their primary health care provider, and mental health specialists to develop a treatment plan. Collaborative care has been shown to be an effective way to treat depression and reduce suicidal thoughts.

WHAT IF I SEE SUICIDAL MESSAGES ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

Knowing how to get help when someone posts suicidal messages can help save a life. Many social media sites have a process to get help for the person posting the message. To learn more, visit the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s webpage about safety and support on social media at https://988lifeline.org/help-someone-else/ safety-and-support-on-social-media.

If you see messages or live streaming content that suggests someone is actively engaging in suicidal behavior, you can contact safety teams at the social media company. They will reach out to connect the person with the help they need.

DOES ASKING SOMEONE ABOUT SUICIDE PUT THE IDEA IN THEIR HEAD?

No. Studies have shown that asking people about suicidal thoughts and behaviors does not cause or increase such thoughts. Asking someone directly, “Are you thinking of killing yourself?” can be the best way to identify someone at risk for suicide.

DO PEOPLE “THREATEN” SUICIDE TO GET ATTENTION?

Suicidal thoughts or actions are a sign of extreme distress and an indicator that someone needs help. Talking about wanting to die by suicide is not a typical response to stress. All talk of suicide should be taken seriously and requires immediate attention.

HOW DO SUICIDE RATES DIFFER AMONG GROUPS OF PEOPLE

Data show that the rates of suicide attempts and suicide deaths vary according to characteristics such as age, gender, race, ethnicity and geographic location. The most recent statistics and information on suicide risk are available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/suicide and the National Institute of Mental Health’s website at: www.nimh.nih.gov/suicidestats

WHERE

CAN I LEARN ABOUT NIMH RESEARCH ON SUICIDE?

NIMH supports promising research that is likely to have an impact on reducing suicide in the United States. Research is helping improve our ability to identify people at risk for suicide and to develop and improve effective treatments. NIMH researchers continue to study suicide and how to best implement suicide prevention and intervention programs in different settings, including health care, community, school and the justice system.

To learn more about NIMH research priorities and recent research on suicide prevention, visit the NIMH website at www.nimh.nih.gov

For additional information about suicide prevention efforts, visit the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention at https://theactionalliance.org and Zero Suicide at http://zerosuicide.sprc.org

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT CLINICAL TRIALS?

Clinical trials are research studies that look at new ways to prevent, detect or treat diseases and conditions. Although individuals may benefit from being part of a clinical trial, participants should be aware that the primary purpose of a clinical trial is to gain new scientific knowledge so that others may be better helped in the future.

Talk to your health care provider about clinical trials, their benefits and risks and whether one is right for you. For more information, visit www.nimh.nih.gov/ clinicaltrials.

HOW CAN I FIND HELP FOR MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS?

If you have concerns about your mental health, tell your health care provider. Your health care provider will listen to your concerns and can help you figure out next steps. Find tips for talking with your doctor about mental health concerns at www.nimh.nih.gov/ talkingtips.

To find mental health treatment facilities in your area, call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357, visit their website at https://findtreatment.gov or text your ZIP code to 435748.
