Burnout in the workplace

Explaining what burnout is and how to protect yourself against it.

How many of you have ever felt burned out by your job? Maybe your work-life balance is getting trounced by work, or perhaps you feel dread every time you step on the truck. Or maybe you’re wondering what the heck burnout even is?

According to the Mayo Clinic, burnout, specifically job-related burnout, is a type of stress linked to work. This can be caused by a number of factors, such as —

• Feeling either constantly overworked or under-challenged

• Being under time pressure all the time

• Having conflicts with colleagues

• Extreme commitment that results in you neglecting your own needs

Any of this sound like you?

If you’re all shaking your heads, I’m afraid I’ll need to call you on that bluff. I’ve spoken with too many of you over the years who’ve self-identified as workaholics. Now, that’s not to say I’m diagnosing all of you with burnout. Different people handle stress in different ways. Overall, I just want you to be aware of what burnout is, so you can take the proper steps to manage it if you ever feel this way.

If you nodded along with any of the factors listed above, ask yourself these questions.

• Are you feeling physically and/or emotionally exhausted?

• Are you feeling less inter-

ested or more frustrated with your job?

• Are you feeling listless, like it’s hard to concentrate, and are drained of creativity?

These are all symptoms of burnout, and while it would be nice to simply choose not to feel this way, that’s not how mental health works. If you break your leg, you can’t will it better. There are guidelines you have to follow to ensure it heals properly. The same is true for burnout. To fight against burnout, you can try:

• Seeking support: Try reaching out to other distributors, friends, or loved ones for support. Being a distributor, it often feels like it’s just you and your tool truck against the world, but talking with others about how you’re feeling can help make you feel less alone.

• A relaxing activity or exercise: Reduce your stress level by practicing meditation, doing yoga, or going for a walk. Whatever you choose to do, it should be something that you enjoy and that helps clear your mind.

• Looking at your options: Maybe it’s time to drop that one prickly customer, or perhaps you need to enforce a day off for yourself. Things won’t change unless you work to change them.

Try to keep an open mind while thinking about these options, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Look, listen, lead: SELLING SCAN TOOLS

You don’t need to

memorize

numbers or be a former technician to sell scan tools. You just need to listen.

Scan tools are now a standard part of most technicians’ toolboxes and a basic requirement for any sort of professional automotive service. They’re frequently one of the most expensive things a technician or shop can invest in, and between a scan tool’s necessity and its price tag, it can be one of the most important things you stock on your truck.

Mac Tools distributor Ted Basile sells diagnostic equipment daily, but full scan tool sales come about every six weeks. He owns three routes in the San Antonio and Central Texas Hill Country, with stops ranging from custom trailer facilities to a handful of small airports and heavy duty facilities. Of course, the majority of his customers are at independent automotive repair shops. Basile has spent the past 18 years with Mac Tools, starting his career as a distributor after his wife’s job took them to Texas.

“More than anything, I got tired of making money for everybody else,” Basile says. “I wanted to do something for me and decided I needed to work for myself. This was one of a couple options I looked at, and I feel it was the right choice.”

SORTING SCAN TOOLS

Scan tools can be roughly placed into two groups: pre-professional and professional scan tools. Pre-professional tools are mostly intended for DIY or at-home setups that will only deal with a handful of vehicles at most, while the professional tools carry the functionality to work on the thousands of vehicles coming in and out of the shop. Professional tools can be further separated by low, middle, and high price points, but separating scan tools by functionality instead of cost can make it easier to understand and sell these tools.

“For a professional scan tool, our main considerations are going to be the vehicle coverage and the capabilities of the special functions and bidirectional functionality,” says Haresh Gobin, vice-president of product and marketing at

After a humble start, Basile now oversees three routes with three trucks.

COVER STORY

XTool. “The more bidirectional functions that you’re able to perform on a wider range of vehicles, the more confident and equipped you are to see whatever drives up to your shop. The cherries on top are going to be the screen size and hardware, but coverage and functionality should be at the top of the list.”

Distributors shouldn’t try to memorize every detail about every model of scan tool – that’s why we publish the Scan Tool Spec Guide – but every customer deserves a distributor who has at least a basic working understanding of the tools they carry.

“I’ll never hand a scanner to a customer unless it’s set up and ready to use,” Basile says. “I’ll get them whatever [tool] they want, but it has to be ready to use, charged, registered, downloaded, whatever that tool needs.”

SELLING IN EVERY SCENARIO

Like any tool, new technicians or apprentices will occasionally need to buy their starter scan tool. However, the real share of sales will come from the journeyman and veteran technicians who already own one or more scan tools.

“It’s paying attention to what they have, what they love about it, and where their frustrations are,” Basile says. “Sometimes they get frustrated because they have something that’s overkill and too complicated for what they do. Other times, they don’t have something that does enough; they need something bigger. Every scenario is different.”

As a distributor, it’s important to remember that every stop is different, too. Take a fresh look at each of your stops and consider their perspective.

A shop with multiple bays can benefit from investing in a standardized set of scan tools, driving productivity up while reducing technicians’ day-to-day frustrations. Your smaller independent

shops may prioritize long-term support or limited-time package deals to defray the investment.

“I have the most success just trying to find out what they’re using over a period of time -- what they like, what they don’t like -- and seizing opportunities when we have promotions or an opportunity to sit with the decision maker and talk about it,” the distributor explains.

By listening to what frustrates your customers about their current scan tool

setup and taking a look at the bigger picture, you can recommend a newer alternative that specifically addresses their concerns or issues, like a decreasing amount of functionality.

“New protocols and security gateways hinder older software and scan tools from connecting,” says Jimmy Singh, TEXA tech support lead. “When shops invest in the latest scan tool providers, they’re investing in vehicle access to increase their repair profits as well as investing in new feature

Basile stocks his trucks based on what customers ask about or what they're struggling with.

efficiencies to empower their technicians to blueprint vehicle repairs faster the first time.”

FINDING SUPPORT

Scan tools are so multifaceted that it can feel impossible to keep track of the updates and new features from every manufacturer, and the truth is that it may just be impossible to do that while still having time to do anything else. It’s also true that there are far better ways to find out exactly what you need to research: ask your customers and take advantage of your resources.

“The biggest thing is staying in tune with your customers,” Basile advises. “We learn more from our customers than any other source. Customer feedback is absolutely number one. Otherwise, it’s the Internet, social media, and Mac’s dedicated diagnostic team.”

Basile oversees three routes in the San Antonio area.

Your resources also include the ones provided by manufacturers. Demonstrations don’t have to start and end with passing a scan tool back and forth, so lead your customers to the resources available to them.

If customers are worried about getting full functionality from their tool, point them to resources like the TEXA EDU training that the company provides with every purchase. If support has been an issue for your customer in the past, prove that you’ve got a solution by reaching out to support with them then and there.

“Many of the mobile dealers and tool distributors will call into our TEXA tech support line to demonstrate how quickly their customers can get access to support and diagnostic assistance,” Singh says.

If a technician is struggling with having to move back and forth to check their computer, then they might be interested in hearing about the Identifix Direct-Hit integration that comes with XTool’s Prodigy and Compass scan tools.

“It just changes the workflow so much since guys trust this database,” XTool’s Gobin says. “A Nissan Altima comes in with 50,000 miles with this

specific code. [The database] is the first thing they’re checking because they don’t want to waste time, and it gives them the fix.”

SPREADSHEETS OF SUBSCRIPTIONS

Just like with most of the things you sell, your commitment to your customer doesn’t end when they walk away with their purchase. Scan tools are no different, thanks to subscriptions and updates. Keeping a copy of the Scan Tool Spec Guide handy can give you a quick and easy way to reference all of the different options available. How a tool handles subscriptions and updates

is just as important as the functionality it brings to the table.

“One key feature is understanding how the updates and subscriptions work,” Basile adds. “Some competitors require you to buy updates for every year missed, but we don’t do that ... if you understand what your competitors are doing and offer solutions to those frustrations, you’ll win them over every time.”

While every manufacturer handles them in a different way, the same fundamentals used to find out your customers’ concerns apply. Once you know what your customers expect, you can provide them with a solution that meets their needs, whether that’s based on monthly costs or free updates. Then it’s just classic customer service.

“You’ve got to support it, service it, and pay attention to when their updates run out. Tell them in 11 months. That’s continued sales,” Basile says. “Keep a spreadsheet, Apple Calendar, Outlook, whatever it is, and remind people. The tool reminds them, but they don’t read it. You have to tell them.”

HEAVY DUTY SERVICE

Servicing heavy duty facilities turned out to be another good choice for Basile, giving him the opportunity to sell some of the higher-end heavy duty scan tools that sell for far more than

The Prodigy features the Direct-Hit database integrated into the tool. Image courtesy of XTool
One of the key features of TEXA's IDC6 software is its frequent and straightforward updates. Photo courtesy of TEXA

their standard counterparts. The same is true for the software and subscriptions technicians need to keep their scan tools working as effectively as possible. One of Basile’s recent sales came from a fleet mechanic who needed very specific functionality. Basile was able to quickly provide a package that solved his customer’s issues while adding a sizeable sale and future subscriptions to his books.

Possibly even more important than the sale was the fact that, after hearing about his customer’s situation, Basile organized a hands-on learning session with one of Mac’s diagnostic teams. A Mac district manager and another customer even joined in on the demonstration, and the group as a whole got a far more engaging and educational experience than if Basile simply passed his original customer a scan tool still in a box. The distributor didn’t need to know the statistics or special functions of every model of scan tool on the market – he simply had to listen to what his customer needed.

Cleaning and maintaining

YOUR TOOL TRUCK

These helpful tips will ensure your truck is ready for the route.

LDV has been the leader in tool trucks for over 45 years. Since the beginning, we have been firm believers that a little TLC every now and then will keep your truck in tip top shape. Here, we talk tool truck detailing and component maintenance to ensure your truck is ready to hit the route every week.

Before performing any maintenance on your truck or any of its components, be sure to consult the operational manual for that particular product and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations.

THE MACHINERY Heaters

There is nothing worse than being cold! We have assembled some heater maintenance tips for both Webasto and Espar units to help you avoid being left out in the cold when winter rolls around. The most important thing you can do for your heater is

run it regularly, even in the middle of July! Be sure to let the heater run a full startup and shut-down cycle before killing power to the unit. The Webasto thermostat has a programmed reminder to run your heater once every month for 20 minutes to circulate fuel through the system. Espar doesn’t include the reminder, but those heaters should be run, too. Performing this simple task will go a long way to ensuring your heater is ready come the cold winter months. Additionally, be sure to keep the 4” heater outlet free from obstructions during operation. This vent gets extremely hot and can cause a hazard, as well as block air flow. Both units should be serviced annually. The Webasto heater has a fuel filter located on the inlet side of the fuel pump that should be replaced. Espar heaters have two screen filters that need to be replaced. One is a screen filter on the fuel pump, and the other is a screen

filter on the glow-plug (glow-plug screen replacement requires a split 12mm socket).

Finally, remember to keep your fuel level above 1/4 tank. The fuel pickup tubes generally sit at this level to prevent you from running your chassis out of fuel. Keeping the fuel level at 1/4 or higher will prevent the unit from sucking air into the fuel lines.

Liftgate

You should operate your liftgate weekly for safe and smooth operation. Operate the cart stops and know the location of your transition plate. To give your gate a deep cleaning, spray the chains, cart stops, and slider rails with a degreaser, let them sit for 20 minutes, and pressure wash them. Once cleaned, remove the pump cover and lubricate the chains with a lightweight motor oil. Use the same lightweight oil to lubricate the cart stops and slider rails as well. To view

our video on the proper cleaning and lubrication of your liftgate, visit youtu.be/hukNKIDbAOw.

Locks

Believe it or not, your locks need periodic maintenance, too. Use a dry graphite spray with the straw inserted into the door lock mechanism. A couple of short spray bursts are plenty. Don’t use WD-40 or other spray lubricants because they trap dirt. Watch the how-to video here: youtu.be/QY1E55hb7LU.

Batteries

Flooded lead-acid batteries need to be watered regularly. Get into the habit of checking and topping off your batteries at least once a month or more as needed. To water your batteries, make sure they have a full charge — if the batteries are not fully charged before watering, they could boil over during the next charge cycle. Next, remove the caps and fill each cell using distilled water. If you want to simplify this process, look into a battery watering kit. These add-on kits make watering your batteries a snap.

The kits replace the battery cell caps with individual valves. Each cell on each battery connects to a hose that can be used to water the entire battery system by simply squeezing a hand pump. Keeping your battery water level topped off drives peak performance from them long term and will extend the life of your battery system. LDV supplies a watering kit with every truck we sell. Air conditioning

Take the time to perform routine maintenance on your air conditioning system to ensure it works properly when you need it. Cleaning the filter

in the evaporator and the intake of the rooftop A/C units prevents your system from becoming clogged or overworked. We recommend cleaning your filters at least annually. The filters can be cleaned using any mild dish soap and then rinsed with water.

Chassis air tanks

If your truck has air ride suspension, you need to drain the auxiliary air tank on the chassis regularly. The tank should have a valve (some trucks will have pull cords as well). Manually open the valve (or pull the cord) and allow the tank to fully drain. This allows moisture that builds up from condensation to exit the tank, preventing corrosion/rusting of the tank. Do this weekly, unless you live in a high-moisture climate, then you should drain the tanks more often.

THE EXTERIOR

Exterior washes

We recommend washing the exterior of your tool truck bi-weekly, or more frequently if possible. Be sure to hose down the underside as best you can. When washing, remember that a little soap goes a long way; too much can cause premature spotting and corrosion on the body and exterior components. Be sure to check the labels on any cleaning products to ensure they are safe to use on your truck, and follow recommendations regarding dilution.

THE INTERIOR

Sweep the floor

Sometimes, the simplest things are the best. One of the easiest things you can do for your truck is sweep out the interior every day. Rocks, trash, and debris can accumulate on your tool truck’s floor, making it look unsightly.

Clean and maintain your floor

Most tool truck floors can benefit

from some periodic cleaning. A good aerosol APC (all-purpose cleaner), a stiff bristle scrub brush, and some elbow grease can have that floor looking great. If your floor is older and needs to be resealed, we have you covered. We created a how-to video to show the proper procedure (youtu.be/QnBRddkgXWI). This applies to both black dot and vinyl plank flooring.

Wipe down shelves and drawers

Another simple but effective task is daily wipe-downs of your product display shelving and drawers. Aerosol furniture polish and a microfiber towel will tidy things up while not being abrasive on the materials. Consider also cleaning any glass display cases.

Windows

We recommend using a glass cleaner and 0000 steel wool to properly clean your truck’s windows (inside and outside). First, spray some glass cleaner on the window, use the steel wool to remove any contaminants from the glass, and then follow up with a terry cloth or clean paper towel to buff to a shine.

Restock often

The best-looking mobile tool stores are ones that are organized and have a lot of products displayed. Utilize the ceiling lace, promotional shelves, slatwall, and product displays to keep your inventory fresh for your customers. Some tool truck owners do this weekly, while other high-volume owners might have to do this nightly. These tips should help your truck look its best for your customers and operate 100 percent for you. When you show your customers you take pride in your business, they are more likely to shop with you.

SHOW ME YOUR TRUCK

Tailored for tools

Cornwell dealer Gabby Libby’s truck

is a little smaller than most, but she doesn’t let that slow her down.

If you’re ever visiting Keene, New Hampshire, take a moment to look around the bustle of the city. You might see a 20’ MT 45 Freightliner navigating the tight, historic streets. In the driver’s seat, on the way to her next stop, is Cornwell distributor Gabby Libby.

THE RIGHT TRUCK FOR THE JOB

Around four years ago, at the start of her career, Libby bought her 2002 Freightliner. She worked with Trans Lease for the financing and with Tim Herr as the builder. As far as features go, Libby wasn’t looking for much in particular, but she knew she wanted the truck to have good A/C and heat to fight the fluctuating temperatures of New Hampshire and a fridge to carry drinks and snacks for customers. It was also important that the truck was just the right size to get her down city streets, but still big enough to allow her to carry a good bit of inventory.

Libby stops at a wide variety of places, including dealerships, boat stores, and forestry businesses, so her truck is always fully stocked with the tools and equipment her customers might need.

“I work with all kinds of different people,” Libby says. “Pretty much anyone who uses tools for anything, I go there.”

EVOLVING ORGANIZATION

When it comes to making sure there’s space on the truck, both for inventory and customers to move around comfortably, Libby is always finding ways to organize her product offerings. Whether it’s getting rid of a display, like the air tool rack she removed for additional wall space, or shifting things around in other ways, she’s always looking for new ways to display tools as her business grows.

When customers compliment her truck, she knows she’s doing something right.

“I get compliments on [my organization] quite a bit in comparison to a lot of the other trucks that my customers deal with,” Libby says. “My biggest thing is I try to make everything visible to my customers.”

DESIGNATED SPACES

The technicians Libby deals with aren’t eager to sift through cluttered inventory, so she takes the extra step to keep products visible and put price tags on everything. She finds that

being able to see the tools sparks more interest than just having the box jammed on a shelf might. Customers can easily grab a tool and get a good feel for whether or not they might want to buy it.

Additionally, Libby likes to group certain products to help customers who come onto the truck looking for something to get a specific job done. Electrical equipment is in one area, diagnostics in another, and so on.

The biggest thing, again, is that inventory on Libby’s truck is organized in such a way that everything is visible so that when a customer comes onboard, they can head right for the section they need. It eliminates rummaging and gets the technician off the truck and back to work much faster.

“Knowing where everything is, I can just be like, ‘Yes, on that shelf over there,’ if I’m dealing with multiple people and there’s no problem finding what I’m telling them to look for,” Libby explains.

UTILIZING A SMALLER SPACE

While Libby’s truck is a little narrower than some other distributors’, she doesn’t let it hinder her business.

“I wouldn’t really say it’s been a challenge,” Libby says. “Its hallways are a little more narrow on this [truck] versus other body styles, but shelf-wise, I have a great amount of space. So, I just try to utilize every bit of it.”

By using her shelf space, the floors remain clutter-free, allowing for more technicians to occupy the space at the same time. In addition to eliminating clutter, having the products on shelves puts them at eye-level with technicians, ensuring that they get a full view of all inventory.

Despite its somewhat smaller size, Libby’s truck is perfectly tailored to serve both her and her customers.

How to plan your stops

Breaking down the “when” and the “what” of each shop visit.

Planning your stops has two components: when and what. The “when” is based on what day, the time of day, and, of course, the most logical order to place the shops on your route. The “what” of planning your stops is based on what your plan of action is when you pull into each stop. This article will cover both components to help you effectively plan for every shop you visit

SURVEY YOUR ROUTE

Starting with the “when,” the easiest way to figure out when you should visit a shop is by surveying your route. Your route should have been surveyed prior to you starting your tool truck. At least, this is true for franchised tool trucks, but not necessarily for independent tool trucks. (It’s a legal matter for franchised tool trucks.) Surveying is the only accurate way to obtain the customer head count and permission to call on the shop. It’s also the best way to find out what days other tool trucks stop, where to park, and details on shop hours and special house rules. Remember, it’s a privilege to be able to call on a shop.

Unfortunately, some dealers forget that. When surveying, I would always tell the owner, “Your shop, your rules. We just need to know what they are.”

I’d explain that the last thing we want to do is jeopardize the privilege of calling on their shop. Some shops have strict rules on what time tool tucks are allowed to stop. It can be a

challenge to accommodate the allowed time stop issue. Sometimes it’s impossible to meet that requirement. You may need to explain that tool dealers have a lot of shops to call on every day, and see if you can work out another time to visit that shop.

Keep in mind, it’s not in the dealer’s interest to become a “professional visitor.” i.e., someone who’s just there to chat about sports or weather and not at the shop acting as a professional salesperson. Dealers need to be aware of the shop’s time. It’s tough to do, but sometimes you have to politely tell your customer, “I’d better get going. I don’t want your boss mad at me for taking too long.”

PLAN AROUND YOUR COMPETITORS

Another consideration for your “when” is when your competition will be visiting your stops. As a district manager, I’d make sure my dealer wasn’t stopping on the same day as another tool truck. It can be overwhelming for both the shop owner and the technicians to have more than one tool truck stopping on the same day. In some areas, it’s impossible to avoid this. The best you can do is visit the stop in the morning if the competition is scheduled to be there in the afternoon.

On a little side note, a good rule has always been to run your route, making right turns from stop to stop in order to avoid crossing roadways. Again, not always possible, but it is

a simple time saver not having to sit at too many intersections just to turn into the next shop.

CREATE YOUR ROUTINE

Moving into the “what” of planning your stops, it’s time to look at creating a routine for your visits. When you arrive at your shops, your routine should be consistent when you drive in every week. Before you go into the shop, go through your mental preshop entry checklist. The first item to check is the route list you printed before you started your day. If you’re not printing a daily route list prior to starting your day, you’re costing yourself money. You have to have the printed list to check customer balances, last payment, customer needs, and the items you have put on a “want list.”

The route sheet should be on a clipboard that you carry in your tote bag when you walk into the shop. Yes, I carried a tote bag, and I was also a distributor way back when they were metal tote trays. Your next consideration should be, what else do you need in your tote bag? You don’t necessarily have to customize the contents to every shop, but if you’ve recently stocked a new item that’s relevant to the body shop you’re about to walk into, make sure to grab that.

Coming back to the “want list,” this is a great sales tool and another way to plan your stops. When you see an item from the “want list”, even if

it’s from months prior, it may help you close a sale today.

For instance, if a customer had mentioned wanting a 5-drawer tool cart a while back, and you’ll be taking one on trade soon, make a note to bring that up in your next conversation with them.

TAKE NOTES

To help plan your “what” for every shop visit, having notes to refer back to can help. I used a planner that I kept on my desk to take detailed notes of the happenings at each stop. I’d make sure to look at the prior week’s notes

on that day before I left the truck. There are just so many moving parts to running a tool truck, you need to keep good notes. Still, having what I thought was a good system, I’d occasionally come back home with a tool that a customer needed that I overlooked because of some other distraction at that shop. Making a note of that can help you fix that error for the next time you see that customer.

PLAN TO HAVE A GOOD DAY

After you’ve got your “when” and your “what” figured out, the last thing you’ll need is a positive mindset. The most

successful dealers I know are the dealers who plan on having a great sales and collection day.

FAHLGREN started in the tool business in 1998. Falhgren has been an employee dealer, franchised dealer, and district manager for two different flags. In 2018, he returned to the driver’s seat of his own tool truck. Providing premium service and his continuous “close to perfect” attitude, he achieved his goal of being a Top 10 dealer for Cornwell Quality Tools. He and his wife of over 44 years recently retired, moving from Oregon to the endless summers of Beverly Hills, Florida.

At 76 years old, soon to be 77, she notes, “I’m not ready to go yet … at this point, I’m still full speed ahead.”

BACK TO THE BEGINNING

While many distributors started off turning wrenches before selling them, Schneider began her journey with a milk crate and 13 products. Back then, she was a dental assistant, and

she’d pick up the 13 products from her brother in New Jersey, head back to New York, and spend her lunch hour visiting shops.

“On my lunch hour, I’d go out in my white uniform, and I would just sell,” Schneider says. “I had a $300 investment with 13 items. So, whatever I had, I sold. And that was it. And then it took off. I did that for about a year, and then I bought myself a van.”

MAKING A NAME FOR HERSELF

Since her start, Schneider has upgraded from her van and gone through a few different tool trucks. During that time, she’s had a chance to make a name for herself. Her route runs through Suffolk County, Long Island, and takes her from independent shop to independent shop.

She notes that it took her a while to make a name for herself, especially when competing against the flagship distributors.

“Because these big trucks already have a name, I have to go in and push myself,” Schneider says. “It’s my business. It’s me that has to sell to them, right? They have to have trust in me.”

Being the only woman in the Suffolk area worked to her advantage as everyone knew who she was. Though standing out also has a downside — with everyone watching, you must be careful of what you do.

Schneider worked hard to gain her recognition in the industry, but her customers also played a role. She didn’t start her business with the name “The Tool Lady.”

“I originally was another name … [but] the guys would always say, ‘Oh, the tool lady’s here,’” Schneider explains. “And the name goes around. I mean, I could be on the island somewhere, and they’ll say, ‘Oh, you’re the lady with the pink truck.’”

The rose on the side of her truck also makes her recognizable. Schneider’s daughter was the one who suggested she add the flower, and the distributor has carried that part of her brand forward by adding the logo to some of her shirts and jackets as well.

THREE GENERATIONS OF CUSTOMERS

Schneider hasn’t stayed in business as long as she has without having a great rapport with her customers.

“Most of my customers are Spanish,” she says. “I take an interest in them. We discuss their family life back in their countries, and I’m good to them. They’re good to me. And once they trust you, then you get the rest of the shop.”

The distributor has stuck around long enough that she’s on the third generation with some of her customers,

as she started working with the grandfather and made her way down the line.

The interest and care she shows for her customers is often reciprocated. They watch out for her and let her know whom to be wary of selling tools and offering lines of credit to, just as she does for them when getting them the right tool to get the job done or bringing them a present after their wife has had a baby.

However, she notes that one of the biggest reasons the technicians come on her truck is the candy. She keeps a variety of it on the truck and lets her customers fill up their pockets and bring it home to their kids.

STAYING STOCKED

Schneider likes to refer to herself as a “nickel and dime type of business.” She doesn’t sell many scan tools, toolboxes, or other high-end tools, but she gets her customers what they need.

“I don’t know how to use the tool,”

she notes, “but I know the tool for the job.”

Luckily, Schneider has two local major suppliers she can go to if she needs to top off her truck or pick up something for a customer – Topline Tool Warehouse and Paramount Tool and Equipment. If necessary, she also knows she can send her customers directly to them to get what they need.

Though Schneider may not carry more of the big-ticket items on her truck, she knows that small sales can lead to big sales, and sometimes the small sales are enough. To help entice these sales she tries to stock more unique tools and equipment.

“I like the little odds and end type tools,” Schneider says. “Not all just wrenches and sockets. I go for the more everyday tools that nobody has on their truck. Important tools, but not necessarily expensive tools.”

She’s also sure to pay attention to what her customers are interested

in when stocking her truck. Over the years, she’s picked up brands like Milwaukee Tool and GEARWRENCH to stay up-to-date with what’s popular. If a customer points out a new company or product, Schneider looks into it.

“They’ll see something online, and they’ll tell me, ‘Hey, you know what? There’s a new tool, why don’t you go get that,” and then I’ll sell that,” she says. “I listen to my customers.”

LOOKING AHEAD

Though Schneider is not looking to slow down anytime soon, when she does, she hopes to be able to sell her route to another female distributor. With a name like “The Tool Lady,” she notes that it wouldn’t make sense to sell it to anyone else.

Until that day comes, Schneider plans to continue taking care of her customers and responding to every call she hears of “Hey, the tool lady’s here!”

Schneider's daughter came up with the idea of adding the rose to her tool truck.

How to get customers to buy from you and not online

Distributors share tips on getting customers to shop with them instead of online.

Wh ile it might be convenient to click “add to cart” instead of leaving the shop, technicians miss out on a lot when they forgo face-to-face interactions with you. It’s your job to show them what they’re missing and get them on your truck instead of surfing the web. We’ve compiled a list of tips from fellow distributors who know just how to keep their customers from shopping online.

1Catch their attention online first

“Usually, if I get a new product, I’ll take a picture of it and post it on my social media and try to spread it out

where people can see it. Then they’ll get a little hyped up and they might call and say, ‘Hey, can you hold me one set aside?’ Mostly that’s what it’s for. I try to get stuff in stock first before other dealers in my area can get it. That way, I can be ahead of the game and put it up on social media.”

2 Keep stock and be willing to help

“Having the product in stock and offering that service, you have to sell yourself, that’s probably the two biggest things. Having a product that they can have in their hand and then being able to take care of it when something

happens. My customers know that when they come to me with a problem, it’s going to be taken care of, and that will keep them coming back and buying.”

—Brian Deakins, independent distributor

3 Service, service, service

“Service. What I give them, they can’t [get online]. They can’t get the pink wigs [that I'll show up wearing]. They can’t get the attitude. They can’t feel the love and the appreciation that I bring to the table. I’ve had guys say, ‘When you don’t show up, I’m sad for three days!’ A lot of it is what I bring when I show up ... when you can come into a shop and have an atmospheric change when you pull in and turn on the light.”

—Robert Tolbert, Mac Tools

4 Taking care of business

“Personal service. I mean, it’s the same old answers, but that’s really what it comes down to. It’s all in trust that if they break something, I’m going to take care of it, because otherwise I tell them, ‘You go online, that’s your responsibility, [regardless of] whether I sell that line of Milwaukee or whatever.' That doesn’t sound right because that sounds like I don’t want to give them service, but ... I do have to prove myself. If I go to a new shop, I have to prove myself — who I am.”

—Gerri Schneider, independent distributor

5 Make yourself their first choice

“With online competitors, service is so much more of a premium than ever before. [In years past,] customers bought from a tool dealer because they showed up and the customers didn’t really have a choice. In today’s market, they absolutely have a choice. It’s not about the price; it’s completely about the service.”
