BOEM vs. aftermarket scan tools

Which type of scan tool does your shop prefer?

ack in April, I attended the Equipment and Tool Institute’s ToolTech event. Each year, one of the event’s sessions is a shop owner’s panel, and one of the questions asked was how their shops are using OEM scan tools versus aftermarket. Though both have their place in a shop, I was fascinated to learn why technicians may lean one way or another.

OEM SCAN TOOLS

For many of the shop owners, they viewed using an OEM scan tool as performing repairs at the next level.

“Ninety percent of the time, your generic [scan tool] will get the job done,” says Gene Morrill, owner of Certified Automotive Specialists. “Now, do we want to get the job done? Or do we want to do an OE level or factory reset the way it’s made to do? Most of us here would want to do the higher level.”

Buckley’s Autocare owner, Greg Buckley, agreed with Morrill’s point and also noted that for his shop, they

moved to OE because of the cost difference. It didn’t make sense to Buckley to be paying to have access to information for vehicles his shop wasn’t working on.

“For me,” Morrill says, “it was more of looking at and analyzing what tools I have, what I’m paying for, what I don’t need, and when it came down to it, I felt that the OE was the much more viable option.”

AFTERMARKET SCAN TOOLS

On the other hand, many of the shop owners agreed that ease of use has many of their technicians reaching for aftermarket scan tools over OE.

“There are some tools that are completely cost prohibitive or complex to use or we continue to have issues with,” notes Lucas Underwood, owner of L&M Performance. “My guys will not use those. They put them in the box. They leave them sitting there even if we have a subscription. If it’s a pain in the butt to use, they’re not going to use it.”

Lee Lizarraga, owner of ABC Autocare, also points out that if 90

percent of the jobs that they’re doing can be handled by an aftermarket tool then why complicate things? Especially when overall, it’s really the technician’s choice what scan tool they want to use to complete a job.

“It’s amazing how segmented that is where one technician may choose one [scan tool] versus another,” Lizarraga says. “And they can all talk about the pros and cons of each one. But not one technician is going to choose the same [scan tool] as the other one.”

Electrical circuit testing techniques for service technicians

Understanding your tools and equipment for electrical circuit testing is crucial to performing competent diagnostics.

In my humble opinion, technicians must have a firm understanding of automotive electrical circuits so when problems surface, testing techniques can be leveraged to realize success.

In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the core techniques of electrical circuit testing. From reading wiring diagrams, accessing component locators, sourcing connector charts, and selecting the right tools, we’ll cover them all. After reading this article, you should have a sharper focus on the art of electrical circuit testing which I know will add to your technical proficiency and the ability to easily earn more money.

Regardless of your experience level, we can all learn something new every day.

FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS: ELECTRICAL BASICS

Technicians must possess a solid understanding of voltage, current, resistance/load, and how their interactions can lead to proper system operation or how a failure in any of those can cause havoc within automotive circuits.

Voltage is the electrical force, and without the right amount, an electrical circuit cannot function properly. This is one of the main reasons battery testing should be carried out proactively like during a service visit. In my shop, we test the low-voltage battery during every vehicle service

visit. Replacing batteries before they cause havoc saves in multiple ways.

Current is the flow of electrons from the power supply. Circuits are designed to support a specific range of current at the operating voltage. Although current measurements are not super common, they can be very revealing especially when viewed through the eyes of an oscilloscope.

Resistance is the opposition to current flow and comes in a few flavors. Every connection, length of wire, switch, relay, etc. provides a small, tolerable amount of resistance. Each point of resistance limits current by consuming some of the electrical supply voltage. For a circuit to do its job, the primary consumption of the supply voltage needs to be consumed by the load. Whether the load is a taillight, window motor, or a fuel injector, minimal voltage drops should exist within the circuit, so the full electrical force is available to perform the task at hand.

TOOLS FOR SUCCESS

One must be very acquainted with their test equipment. First, a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM) is a pretty standard piece of equipment a technician needs to have easy access to if they are going to be successful. However, one also needs to

be keenly aware of the device’s limitations and its behaviors.

One behavior that comes to mind is auto-ranging. If one is not paying close attention, this feature can fool you. And because of this, I find myself typically turning it off and manually controlling the display resolution. This is done by knowing the expected range to focus on the circuit or device under test. For example, if a meter is constantly changing its display scaling, observing the numbers can be annoying. This is also true with some oscilloscopes that have auto-ranging on by default.

Second, a test light is very useful at times, and I find myself using it often. In fact, just this week I was working with one of our apprentices who was faced with a parasitic load that was measured out at just under 500mA. As we discussed strategies for locating the source, I suggested that we start at the easiest point of access and that was at the under-hood power distribution center. As I was guiding her through the strategy of my approach, I explained that there were a few ways we could begin testing.

One strategy was to begin removing fuses until the draw disappeared. However since there were many fuses in that power distribution center, we could narrow down the list of fuses to pull by utilizing a test light.

p Figure 1 — Parasitic load testing - Identifying a hot fuse Photo courtesy of Scott Brown p Figure 2 — Parasitic load testing - Identifying loads Photo courtesy of Scott Brown

After verifying that the test light was working, we began identifying the fuses that were connected to battery power by marching up and down the fuse block noting which fuses were connected to battery power (Figure 1).

Then all we needed to do was start removing each of the identified fuses one at a time while watching our DVOM. At about the third fuse we pulled we noticed that our load dropped to around 7mA (Figure 2).

Looking at the label under the fuse block cover we found that the fuse we needed to identify service information on was fuse 173 (25A). Digging into service information revealed that the only device protected by that fuse was the ABS module (Figure 3).

Next, we looked at the wiring diagram (Figure 4) and found that there were two continuous power supplies protected by two different fuses. One of which is the fuse supplying the parasitic load. We also wanted to check the ignition feed to the ABS module to make sure that we didn’t have a short to power on that circuit with the key off. We confirmed this by measuring the signal at pin-8 of the ABS module for the absence of power with the key off.

This vehicle indeed needed a new ABS module. When interviewing clients, they revealed to us that they have had the battery replaced in the vehicle about every 18 months. Today it’s not uncommon to see a 12V battery requiring replacement every three to five years. If only the parasitic load had been discovered previously, the client likely wouldn’t have

had so many battery failures.

There are other ways to identify which fuses are likely supporting an unwanted parasitic load. One test involves measuring the voltage drop across the fuse. As mentioned earlier, all connections will have resistance, and therefore a voltage drop can be observed. If you find a fuse that has a voltage drop, then you can investigate items protected by that fuse. You might want to consider this style of test to avoid the possibility of waking up a module after removing and reinstalling a fuse. If such an event occurred, it would

result in lost time as you would be waiting for that module or device to properly power down.

Now looking back at Figures 1-4, one should also have an awareness of the amount of “load” your test light places on a circuit. Measuring the current your test light/s draws is very good for reference. This can be useful information especially when trying to load test low current circuits, either the power or ground supply where you suspect unwanted resistance. In some cases, you may need to make up your own set of test lights for these tasks. Personally, I have several lights ranging from 11mA up to 8A.

One quick test you can deploy for this is when you are checking for power and ground on say a mass air flow sensor. If you are using a DVOM and back-probing the sensor with it disconnected, you are not loading the circuit. With high

resistance upstream on the power side, you might see 12.2V KOEO (key on, engine off) across the power and ground but if you were able to take a test light that drew at least 500mA and connected the ground side of the test light to the battery negative and touched the probe side to the positive lead on the meter, the light would not light and you would see your meter drop as well. This is how you can leverage test lights to help you load a circuit and why it is important to know how much current your light draws. For example, I have a test light with an LED. This light only draws 11mA, and it is possible

that this amount of load would be unable to allow this theoretical voltage drop to reveal itself as shown in Figure 5 .

Third, I consider a current probe to be a valuable tool and one I recommend and use often. Pairing it with a voltmeter will provide one with some valuable information about the total power consumption in the system under test. Power is expressed in wattage which is what we’re usually accustomed to in our homes when replacing light bulbs. This too is something we should be familiar with since there are systems on cars that monitor current flow and if the normal amount of current is deviated from, other problems can surface. For example, some vehicles monitor the external lighting system and if a low-current LED bulb is installed in place of an incandescent, warning lights or messages are likely to show up. These systems usually deploy a precision resistor within a module connected to the power supply side of the bulb circuit. This resistor will provide a known voltage drop when the circuit is consuming the design current. If you install a bulb that takes it outside of the calibrated current consumption range, think LED, this will result in that module communicating this error through a warning light or message for the driver.

CURRENT MEASUREMENTS

I would like to start with the fact that inductive current probes have limitations and reemphasize that one needs to know their tools and behaviors. A handheld inductive current probe can be a valuable tool when used correctly. If you are trying to measure/validate a parasitic load with a current probe you are likely going to be misled. The reason I say this is from experience. When I am performing parasitic load testing on a vehicle, I am always going to base my conclusions on a direct series measurement through my DVOM. When you perform a parasitic load test the best practice is to properly configure the vehicle for monitoring. Connecting a high current switch between the battery ground post and cable will allow you to carefully monitor parasitic load activity after a proper vehicle shutdown.

Additionally, as mentioned earlier, inductive current probes can give inaccurate results at very low currents. Most probes will require that you hold the probe very near the point of measurement when turning the device on so that you can obtain a zero-baseline reading. Then carefully maneuver the probe over the circuit to monitor. Your results may vary and change over time which will require you to remove the probe and re-zero repeatedly. (Please refer to the manual that came with your current probe.) This is because of the varying magnetic fields near the probe.

CURRENT PROBES AND OSCILLOSCOPES

I first saw the power of a current probe coupled with an oscilloscope back around 1990 on the “For Techs Only” forum on CompuServe. The person showing this technique was looking at an ignition module controlling waste-spark coils. Two out of the three coils had a ramp up to the current-limiting point. The other was missing the ramp and looked more like a square wave. Initially, I didn’t believe what I was seeing until I learned more about this technique. Since then, I have been using current probes regularly as a

tool to analyze everything from coils, fuel injectors, blower motors, and more.

I’ve shared an example (Figure 6) of a current pattern from a fuel injector (green trace). If you look closely, you’ll see my cursors being used to measure not only the time it took for the injector to fully open by noting the injector pintle hump but also the amount of current flow to make this happen.

The only time people notice an air compressor is when it’s not working. That’s why Jenny has basically gone unnoticed since 1927. It’s the hazard of offering the most reliable compressors on the market, but we wouldn’t have it any other way…nor would our customers.

DRIVEABILITY AND PERFORMANCE

Over the years I have worked on many Corvettes and back in the 1989 era, the Tuned Port powerplant had plenty of fuel injector issues. Many of these issues were inherent with the Rochester Multec injector. While most of these vehicles are no longer in service due to age and environment, we still see them from time to time. Recently we had one in that had various driveability complaints such as extended crank times and a rough idle. Occasionally the vehicle would exhibit a slight hesitation upon throttle tip-in. During my analysis, I wanted to take a close look at the fuel injectors. Since this is a bank-fired system, we know that the injectors are wired in parallel groups. Each of the two groups is protected by their own fuses. This is good for us since this allows us to simply install a fuse loop so that we can attach a current probe and make an observation.

Figure 7 demonstrates the before and after injector performance once new injectors were installed.

As you can see, the new injectors’ orange trace has a very distinct injector pintle opening signal versus the old Multec injectors occurring later in time. The vehicle’s driveability symptoms have diminished and every time we see the client he raves about how well his vehicle is performing.

CASE STUDY: CRANK NO-START

A 2009 Dodge Challenger was towed in after the client experienced a crank nostart event. We proceeded to perform our standard routines for such a symptom which led us to believe that the fuel pump was highly suspect. Looking for a way to test it electrically, we found that there is a power distribution center located in the trunk possessing the fuel pump relay.

This location provides a great access point for testing both the fuel pump relay control signal and power flow through the fuel pump. One test device I have relied on over the years is the uActivate from AESwave. Recently, they updated the uActivate with a few new features. One of the features is a new momentary push-button on the side of the unit that helps you understand which terminal (87 or 87A) carries the load. When I installed the device in place of the relay the first test I performed was to have an assistant power cycle the key while observing the LED indicator placed across pins 85 and 86 (Figure 8).

Since I was able to confirm proper ECM control of the fuel pump relay I moved on to my next test. Referencing the wiring diagram (Figure 8) we can see that pin-30 is our power supply and pin-87 feeds the fuel pump. Pushing in on the momentary switch located on the side of the uActivate resulted in the LED under ID 87 to dimly light. This immediately told me that there was a high probability of high resistance in this circuit. To confirm the upstream power supply, I connected a high current test light to the 4mm test plug on pin-30 at the top of the uActivate to ground where it lit. Next, I had an assistant help by tapping on the bottom of the fuel tank while I held the test button down and observed the LED under 87 where it momentarily flashed bright (Figure 9).

PTEN JUNE 2024 www.VehicleServicePros.com 22
p Figure 9 — Relay circuit testing - Power cycling the key Photo courtesy of Scott Brown p Figure 10 — Relay circuit testing - Speaker installed Photo courtesy of Scott Brown

I then remembered that I made a request to Jorge Menchu, the founder of AESwave a while back after explaining my desire to be able to perform this test without an assistant. He suggested that a small speaker could be deployed which he proceeded to manufacture and send to me to test out. This worked out great because after inserting the speaker I proceeded to repeat the fuel tank tap test and could hear the speaker come to life intermittently as the bottom of the tank was coerced. I have a short video of this activity (youtube.com/shorts/F_pveMSVNjQ). See Figure 10 where the speaker is installed.

Based upon these observations we were able to conclude that the high resistance was downstream on the pump side. Next, we confirmed our electrical connections at the fuel pump module were not the cause of the high resistance and concluded that the vehicle needed a new fuel pump module assembly.

After the replacement of the fuel pump module, I decided to reinstall the uActivate and utilize the large current loop on the bottom of the unit to sample the fuel pump current while turning the pump on via the on-off switch located in the center of the device and letting it stabilize.

The current trace here shows (Figure 11) the stall current of the brushed DC motor hitting approximately 29A and the

nominal current operating at approximately 9A. Additionally, I was able to place cursors to measure the time between one revolution of the pump and determine that the fuel pump RPM is operating around 6,500.

CONCLUSION

As you can see having a strong understanding of electrical circuits, behaviors, and a keen awareness of measurement devices, such as meters, scopes, probes, etc., one can gain an advantage when it comes to performing competent diagnostics on today’s and tomorrow’s vehicles.

My team’s journey into the ADAS industry

When repairing vehicles, make sure you know the correct manufacturer’s repair procedure. Not knowing the right repair procedure could be the difference in winning or losing a lawsuit.

For those of you who know me, you know that I have recently opened a second shop designed to be a business-to-business support system specializing in ADAS diagnosis, repair, and calibration. At the beginning of 2018, I wanted to make my business more consistent from month to month financially. I refer to this as the retail roller coaster, up one month, down the next. So I began looking at new technologies

to focus on and be known as a specialist in that area. I learned that Autel was releasing a system to perform the majority of ADAS calibrations on most cars.

That year I attended the Vision trade show in Kansas City (Figure 1) and had a chance to speak with Autel directly. As the year progressed, I began doing more and more research and found that Autel had a complete solution for ADAS calibrations, exactly what I was looking for. (Figure 2) My experience with Autel prior to that gave me faith that

they had succeeded in the total solution. January 2019 was the start of a new line of work performing ADAS calibrations.

REACHING OUT TO LOCAL BUSINESSES

I began by locating the body shops within a 5-mile radius of our location. My strategy to gain new business was going out to these body shops that I identified and promoting my shop and our abilities of what we could offer them. We focused on areas that they did not want to repair,

PTEN JUNE 2024 www.VehicleServicePros.com 24 TOOL BRIEFING
p Figure 1 — Vision trade show 2018 Photo courtesy of Ross Colket

and in doing that, our business grew and grew. The body shop work and ADAS calibrations now account for one-third of our business. We are busy year-round, and we rarely have a slow day. I actually had to hire a person to help with repairs, maintenance, and growth projects around the shop since myself and my techs do not have time to take care of the day-to-day maintenance.

GETTING THE MEASUREMENTS RIGHT

When we first started doing ADAS calibrations, our first frame was set up for the calibration to use tape measures and lasers to get the frame placement. This was good, and it’s what some automotive manufacturers continue to use to this day. The problem with this type of system is if you make a mistake with your setup, then the vehicle will not calibrate. Remember the targets have a “go/no-go gauge.” If the vehicle would not calibrate, I found that we would begin questioning our measurements, and then with the anxiety of the vehicle failing the calibration, mistakes could be made while checking the measurements. Luckily, we were successful in our calibrations, but when we had a vehicle that wouldn’t calibrate, we would spend way too much time trying to figure out why.

Our second frame had cameras and wheel targets, like an alignment rack, to aid in placing the ADAS target in the correct position. This helped to eliminate the time we were wasting trying

to figure out why a vehicle wouldn’t calibrate. Once we gained confidence in the system, we learned that if a car failed, we would reposition the frame once after the initial setup and if it would still not calibrate, we would turn our focus to the vehicle being the root cause of the problem.

When it comes time for you to make the decision to begin thinking about which ADAS equipment to purchase, take the time to educate yourself on the capabilities of the equipment. Most of the major tool companies now have ADAS frames with cameras too. There are many machines out there that won’t do most cars. Also, pay attention to some of the major players as they have had several different versions of their equipment in only a few years. You must consider how long they will continue to support the present version.

EXPANDING YOUR BUSINESS

This new technology took us to the next level. It made us comfortable calibrating aftermarket glass, which opened up new doors to supporting the aftermarket automotive glass industry (Figure 3). Most dealerships will refuse to calibrate aftermarket glass (Figure 4). They have the frustration of working with tape measures and if the glass doesn’t calibrate, they get frustrated. I do understand why, but we have learned to look for bad glass. Many times, it is wavey when you begin to look closely at cars that fail to recalibrate after a windshield replacement. One thing that you should understand is that the glass manufacturers will only warranty the glass if there is a concern. They do not cover labor or adhesives, just the glass. As a result, the glass companies are very concerned

about profit when a windshield will not recalibrate. I work closely with them and perform enough calibrations that I do not charge them for a calibration when the windshield is the cause. I realize that I am losing money by doing this, but when I am doing 300 plus calibrations a year, what is the smarter move? Charge for a few failed or continue to perform the 300 calibrations.

SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE

One of the big things to keep in mind, we are a very progressive organization as far as technology. Part of what we do for the businesses we work with is carefully educating them about the new technologies. We understand not to force large amounts of information on them, but to introduce new ideas and concepts a little at a time. We have found that most

of them do not choose to self-educate or attend training. As a result, they are very slow to progress. I see that in the mechanical, body, and glass industries. I am always surprised at how little knowledge some people in the automotive industry have of ADAS. Many people in the industry agree that ADAS in its earliest stage started in the 1950’s with anti-lock brakes. However, when

I think of ADAS in its earliest stage, I think of the systems from 2000 when Cadillac started with night vision. With our training in ADAS we now simply look at ADAS systems as either optical or distance sensors. Yes, there are more particulars to it than that, but it really is pretty straightforward once you have become accustomed to working with the systems. As a result of my team’s reputation, we have been extremely fortunate that everyone on the team sees the benefits of furthering their knowledge and sharing it within the team and the industry overall. To continue our education, we utilize Carquest Technical Institute and World Pac Technical Institute. As a result, we continue to grow and be requested for training.

ing torque specifications. Remember the repair time also includes the time to look up the repair procedure.

Let’s take a moment and think about torque to yield bolts, if they are reused, they are very likely to break. What happens if that control arm bolt breaks? We are even seeing torque to yield bolts on sub-frames and cross-members. We know that if the vehicle crashes you are liable. What if that vehicle crashes because it was not calibrated properly after a repair? You are liable. If a vehicle requires a calibration after an alignment and that calibration is not completed, you did not follow the manufacturer’s recommended repair procedure. If we take the time to learn, test, and certify in this industry we can go to the next level and charge for it.

For example, most plumbers charge $150 to $200 just to come to your house. We aren’t there. We have an incredibly hard time finding new employees in this industry, why? Because we do not pay them what other industries are paying. Think about being a plumber, think how many fewer tools they require in comparison to the vast quantity of tools that we require. My lead technician’s toolbox houses approximately $200,000 in tools.

In order for us to recruit new talent we have to begin charging appropriately so that we can afford to pay

appropriately. We are not the technicians from the 1960s. We are dealing with technology that exceeds that of

I am in the ADAS business. I have advertised and promoted this. If you are removing bumpers, replacing mirrors, replacing A/C condensers or radiators, replacing rear view mirrors, replacing windshields, or removing front bumpers you are also in the ADAS business. As an industry, we have to educate ourselves and learn how to look up the correct service

information for the repairs we perform. Most manufacturers require a calibration if the sensor has been touched or replaced. Remember the Honda Fit in Texas, a $43-million lawsuit that was lost because the body shop didn’t follow the manufacturer’s recommended repair procedures. If you perform a repair and the vehicle calls for a radar calibration and camera calibration, and you don’t perform them, you are not following the manufacturer’s recommended repair procedures. If that car is in an accident, and they look at the repair history and see that you didn’t calibrate the car after your repairs, you are liable. If

your shop is going to perform ADAS services, then make sure you know what you’re doing, otherwise, you’ll just be left asking the question, “How good is your insurance?”

SUNEX

1/4” Air Blow Gun Kit

Reviewed by Brin Kline, presidenttechnician at Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, Florida.

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?

A: The velocity of the air that exits this gun is very impressive. Velocity with some adjustability is what you want in a blow gun, and this one does it better than any other blow gun I’ve used. Whether it’s blowing off dust, debris, or degreaser, this gun does the job faster.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: The tool is very easy to use. Just connect to an air hose and start using the air gun.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The SUNEX Tools 1/4” Air Blow Gun Kit is engineered for highvolume air blowing. The kit offers a compact design with industrialgrade performance. Additionally, the large diameter venturi tip increases air output, ensuring the user can efficiently clear broad amounts of debris and dust as well as quickly dry wet areas. Crafted with metal housing and improved seals, this kit offers durability for its users who work in rigorous environments. With a 4.75” and 3.5” tube tip, complete with rubber ends, users can access tight spaces without worrying about causing damage. The kit also includes an adjustable precision tip, allowing for focused airflow.

Circle 52 on card or click “PTEN e-inquiry” on VehicleServicePros.com

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: The package is made of cardboard, but on the inside is a dense foam insert with custom cutouts to fit each of the parts included. The kit comes with the blow gun, an air coupling, an adjustable nozzle, a venturi nozzle, and two different length rubber tip extensions.

Q: What features did you like?

A: I like that the gun is metal. It feels like it will last a long time and would withstand a good drop or any other casualty short of being run over by a car. I also like that the kit includes an adjustable nozzle, rubbertipped extensions, and most importantly, the venturi nozzle.

Q: Is there any way you could think of improving or adding to this tool?

A: I’d like to see the rubber be more coneshaped like traditional rubber tips included with other blow gun kits. That way the gun would be more versatile when using the rubber tips. That said, I suspect that SUNEX has their reasons for the rubber tip design that they used. When changing the tips/nozzles, it’s not always easy to change by hand without tools. The venturi and extensions are easy to remove and install but the adjustable nozzle/tip is not. I’m not sure that I like the rubber o-rings on the nozzles/tips. I can’t help but wonder how long it will be before these tear and/or wear.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: We used this blow gun to clear lines during A/C system flushes. We also used it for cleaning engine compartments during leak inspections and after leak repairs.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I’ve used blow guns for years, but I’ve never had one so sturdy and cool looking. I’ve also never used a blow gun with a venturi nozzle. This blow gun “blows” the competition away.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I love this blow gun kit! I rate this tool a nine only because of the feature improvements I described above. Otherwise, I’m very happy with this kit and would recommend it to any of my friends or colleagues.

Foxwell TS5000

by Pete Rudloff, owner of Pete’s Garage in Bear, Delaware.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using this product?

A: Minimal setup: Turning on, connecting to shop Wi-Fi, and then creating a Foxwell account. Within several minutes this was easily done. I will note the confirmation email got snagged in my Gmail spam.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was it easy to understand?

A: A full printed instruction manual is included, but the tool is so intuitive that many will not use it.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: It is Android-based and just as fast and intuitive as using an Android-based

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Foxwell TS5000 Smart TPMS Service Tool is designed to offer a complete solution for TPMS service. The professional TPMS service tool can activate/ decode universal TPMS sensors, program Foxwell TPMS sensors, and diagnose the original car TPMS. phone. I really like that it has features, like expanding font size, just like any other Android device.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: Professionally boxed and a small but seemingly durable case is included. A charging cord is also included.

Q: What features did you like?

A: There is a lot to like about this tool:

• Tool navigation is a breeze, finding what function I want to use is easy and fast.

• The Bluetooth connection is a game changer. With a previous tool, I would need to use a different scan tool to put the vehicle into learn mode so I could use the TPMS tool to trigger the sensors. Because of Bluetooth, one tool easily does it all!

• The added feature of being able to check key fob remotes is great.

• The OBD-11 scanner feature is powerful for a generic scanner which makes the TS5000 a convenient first grab for I/M readiness.

• The USB-C cable for charging is great, shows that Foxwell is at the front of the technology curve.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: TPMS testing to locate, replace,

and program faulty sensors on a 2007 GMC Yukon, 2014 GMC Acadia, 2010 Cadillac CTS, and a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. I/M readiness in a 2005 Jeep.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: A few improvements for this tool:

• Increasing the screen size slightly would be perfect.

• The system uses an unsupported version of Android. It’s currently a stable and powerful Android version but being unsupported could cause future security issues with some OEMs.

• A replaceable screen protector would increase tool durability and ultimately tool life.

• Having a dock for the OBD dongle to clip to on the tool would prevent future misplacing of the OBD dongle.

• Boot-up time could be a little faster.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I have had a TPMS tool of some variation since about 2008, and the Foxwell tool screams quality. During my evaluation, I didn’t find any holes in TPMS coverage. The generic OBD-II scanner worked great, was very intuitive, and the display was above average.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I would rate this a 9.5. Easily the best TPMS tool I have used to date.

Ledlenser AF4R Work Area Light

Reviewed by Jaime Lazarus, retired technician from Ocala, Florida.

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: Having a well-illuminated work area is vitally important from a safety standpoint and is important when considering job completion time. The Ledlenser AF4R

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Ledlenser AF4R Work Area Light delivers up to 2,000 lm and offers five brightness levels as well as a five-step tunable white light. With the Multi-Concentrated Light technology, the area light provides efficient directed light, maximum illuminance, and reduced glaring. Designed with hybrid power, users can use either the rechargeable battery or opt to plug-in with AC power. The light is protected from dust and water at an IP67 rating and offers flexible mounting options such as the foldable stand, magnet, or hook. At 2,000 lm the light has a runtime of two hours while at 200 lm the light has a runtime of 20 hours. Circle 54 on card or click “PTEN e-inquiry” on VehicleServicePros.com

Area Light will help save time when the technician has the ability to change not only the work environment’s illumination level (brightness) but its light color as well. The light is portable and cordless—or corded—which means the tech doesn’t have to waste time stringing extension cords, finding a usable power outlet, etc. (affecting job completion rates). The amount of area the light covers far exceeds most other work lights, so fewer are needed for the same work area (decreased lighting investments). I think it would be an ideal fit in a paint/body shop environment where color matching is so critical.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: Minimal setup was involved. All I did was charge the unit completely the night before using it for the first time.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: I’ll admit, I eventually read the manuals that came with it, but only to ensure I wasn’t missing any features. It’s very easy to use.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: It was packaged in a way that ensured an undamaged product was delivered to the end user. It comes with an AC power supply and a USB-C to USB-C cord.

Q: What features did you like?

A: I liked the ability to adjust the color temperature and the light intensity, and that the magnetic handle will not just fall off any ferrous material you place it on. The magnets are strong enough to hold the lamp even if bumped! The battery life is extraordinary. The controls are well thought out. The handle swivels, as does the directional light output.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: This Ledlenser AF4R Area Light operates much cooler than tripod-mounted halogen lights, has more light output adjustments, and can operate either by its own battery power or, like previous lights I’ve used, connected to a wall outlet power supply.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I rate this Ledlenser AF4R Area Light a 10. With all the engineering put into this lamp, I see there was considerable thought prior to bringing the product to market.

allows me to insert the thermal imager at angles that would be impossible with any other configuration.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: I would like higher resolution and the ability to rotate the image, as I could not find a way to do that. The software allows for mirroring the image or flipping it, but not rotating it.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: It came in a hardshell case with a charger and cleaning cloths. A short manual was included, and it was easy to read and understand.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: There’s not much setup, I just had to charge the tablet, connect it, and I was done.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: I used it to find a current draw on a BMW. I found a parasitic draw with it coming from a babbling cluster.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: For not being able to easily rotate the image and its slightly lower than I’d like resolution, I’d give it an eight.

Hunter Engineering 1708-T Online Alignment Guide

Q&A with Mike Brecht, product manager for Hunter Engineering.

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A: For us, what makes [the Online Alignment Guide] innovative is making it digital. Taking this book that’s been successful for a long time and making it digital allows us to put it in our HunterNet 2 Customer Portal so it’s all in one place. If you’re a service writer and you have a customer standing right in front of you, now [it’s] fully searchable, so you can quickly find the vehicle that they’re working with. It’s got a clickable table of contents, and it really gives them the solution they need immediately with an online offering. Also, since it is in our customer portal they can have a couple of tabs up and, paired with our inspection results page, they can see both the diagnosis... and the solution for that vehicle right immediately at their fingertips.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: As I mentioned, this has been in book form for a very long time... and that has been very successful. The inspiration was really just to build on that success and give our customers a digital offering and, even though it’s digital, we have really kept the look and feel of the original book. Again, you get the benefit of it being searchable and easy to get to (it’s never lost), paired with the fact that there’s no learning curve with it. It’s got the same look and feel, [technicians] know how to read it and how to interpret it immediately.

Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?

A: One big way is it’s always up-to-date. As soon as we get the specifications for alignment, [which] tells you what the vehicle needs to have done to get it back within factory specifications, we update this book online. That’s going to allow the shop owners and service writers to identify a solution for more vehicles and ultimately for the driving public itself. They’re going to have their vehicles more up-to-date or always able to be worked on and quickly find the solution for them.

Q: What has the feedback been like from technicians who have purchased this alignment guide?

A: HunterNet, our customer portal, is actually included with all Hunter equipment owners. So a beautiful part about it is it’s totally free. We’ve added three other equipment guides very similar to this due to its success. This is one of our top customer portal pages as far as views go. We know that people are using it and having a great experience because of it.

The STAHLWILLE Quick Torque Wrench features the company’s quick-release safety lock for rapid adjustment and a wear-resistant trigger system with a flexible rod that eliminates the need to reset and store the wrench to zero. Users can select from a wide range of interchangeable insertable tool heads that consist of ratchet drives, open-end, ring, and square attachments for demanding applications. The torque wrench can be calibrated using the company’s perfectControl calibration device (No. 7794 or No. 7706), setting the high and low limits without disassembly. Further loading the wrench after triggering does not affect the triggering mechanism and protects against damage, says the company. It’s gotta be red

Technician Gerald Dahlin made sure his toolbox had plenty of storage space for his tools, but first it needed to be red.

As a second-generation technician, Gerald Dahlin has been around cars since the early 80s. Growing up in his father’s shop, he helped with cleanup and organization as a kid. After graduating from a technical college and taking his ASE certifications to become a master technician, he partnered with his father in 1989 to open up D.A.D.,s Repair. When his father retired, Dahlin took over as owner and operator.

Now, with three ASE-certified technicians working for him, Dahlin’s dayto-day looks a little different from when he first started, but that hasn’t lessened the importance of a sturdy, reliable toolbox for him.

MR. BIG

In 1987, as a senior in high school, Dahlin bought his first Snap-on toolbox. It came in red, the same color his

father always chose for his own toolboxes. Since then, he’s gone through a number of boxes, from a KRL 1003 in 2003 to his current toolbox, the Mr. Big he traded for in 2015. Through it all, he’s remained steadfast in his preference for red.

“It’s got to be red, or I don’t want it,” says Dahlin.

KEEPING IT TIDY

To make room for the 12’ long Mr. Big toolbox, Dahlin decided to cut his workbench to fit the box neatly beside it. His favorite part of the box is the ease with which he’s able to organize his tools.

Being able to find the tools he needs without moving or shuffling things around is essential for his workflow.

When it comes to organizing his tools, Dahlin keeps the more commonly used tools in drawers that are about waist high. Things like screwdrivers, pliers, and combination wrenches, go in separate drawers. For metric and standard size tools, he keeps things easy and puts standard to the left side and metric to the right side of the drawer.

CHOOSING A TOOLBOX

Dahlin advises technicians to consider the quality and structure of a toolbox before purchasing.

“You can charge whatever you want to charge,” Dahlin says. “But the way the drawers pull out, [their] strength, I think that’s the most important thing to look at or inform someone about before purchasing a toolbox.”

As for the future of the Mr. Big toolbox, once it fills up Dahlin has no plans to expand.

“I told my Snap-on dealer this is the last one. If this one fills up, I’m retiring,” Dahlin laughs.

SPEC GUIDE 2024 SCAN TOOL

Updated information for manufacturers of Global OBD-II, Professional Diagnostic, and Heavy Duty Diagnostic scan tools.

Welcome to the 2024 Scan Tool Spec Guide, brought to you by Professional Tool & Equipment News, Professional Distributor, and Fleet Maintenance magazines.

It’s been eight years since we started putting together this guide, and arguably as the years have passed, the need for shop owners and technicians to have the right scan tool/s has only increased. Though the basic format of this guide has stayed the same, each year we work hard to update every section to reflect the advancing technology of this industry. And with those advancements, that are only continuing to evolve, the scan tool remains one of the first tools a technician is reaching for to diagnose a customer’s vehicle.

While OE scan tools have their place, this guide is dedicated to many of the aftermarket scan tool options available. According to our research in the 2024 Aftermarket Profile study — found in the April issues of PTEN and Professional Distributor — 78 percent of technicians are relying on aftermarket scan tools in the shop. That’s up six percent from last year’s study.

So, if you or your shop is looking to add another scan tool to your collection, we’ve got you covered. We provide information from 25 aftermarket scan tool manufacturers all broken down into three categories: Global OBD-II, Professional Diagnostic, and Heavy Duty Diagnostic.

Over these next several pages, you’ll find the most up-todate product information for aftermarket scan tools available on the market from many of your favorite manufacturers.

Whether you’ve had a scan tool break, need to update your tool to a newer model, or your current scan tools just don’t do everything you need them to, let this guide be a reference for you as you narrow down what features you’re searching for. Purchasing a new scan tool is a big investment, so take your time flipping through these pages to help figure out exactly what scan tool fits all your requirements.
