The list represents the diverse group of automotive professionals and businesses that work every day to keep America’s vehicles on the road and working properly. While
it’s the goal of NOLN to highlight lube shop operators big and small, this list shows how the biggest companies are growing to meet the needs of customers and support staff members and their families.

The Future of the Successful Lube Shop Dave Schletewitz is the automotive installed channel marketing manager at Chevron. He sat down with NOLN to take stock of where we are, where we’re headed and how savvy shop owners can get ahead. How has the company developed its quick maintenance segment in recent years? Chevron views its role in the important quick lube maintenance business as one that revolves around leveraging the strengths of our brands, our people and reputation for trusted, high-quality products; promoting a broader premium product line up that brings greater value to Havoline customers and consumers; and offering customers business insights and sharing best practices. What does successful growth look like for the next few years at Chevron? I’ll answer the question in the general context of our industry. As demand partially recovers post-2020, the near term priority is to regain stability of supply across all industry supply chains. As that happens we will see organizations return to a typical cadence of innovation (product, package and brand programs) and a resulting uptick in activity related to: renewables, EV and synthetic aftermarket fluids addressing niche OEM specifications. We’ll also see continued reduction in packaging materials and growth of branded products and networks that promote trust and peace of mind with end consumers.
How do you see the quick maintenance industry changing in the next 10 years? Over the next decade, considering the trends, we can expect to see: gradual fluid demand compression; increasing cogs on related supplies; OEM powertrain technology advancements and specifications driving pricier fluids; growing demand for servicing alternative power vehicles; paying more to find and retain the right labor force; continued aging of the car park; and spending on auto maintenance. Those who adapt and control their controllables will remain strong—speed and saving consumers time is the fast lube owner’s key value proposition (the stay-inyour-car model gets people in and out quicker); maintenance (adapt to capture more services); staffing should mirror one’s customer base (female employees/managers); disciplined management of retail prices to keep pace with increases in the cost of doing business; and most importantly, customer service—those who consistently deliver a service experience that exceeds consumer expectations will justify pricing and win over their local competition.
