About DO Rías Baixas 3 - 9
Thank you for joining us for the 2023 Rías Baixas Roadshow. We are thrilled to share a full range of current releases; rare espumosos and tintos; and añadas anteriores and sobre lías styles. Rías Baixas is proud to be the homeland of the Albariño grape. This year’s tour is a proud celebration of our Atlantic origins – and of the distinctive identity Albariño takes on in the hands of the talented winemakers and growers who work across five sub-regions to make wines of the highest quality and character. We welcome your feedback and hope you will share many insights with our visiting producers and representatives.
Salud!
Situated in Spain’s northwest region of Galicia, Rías Baixas resembles the green fields and rocky coasts of Ireland. Known as Green Spain, the hillsides of Galicia recall the ancient Celtic history of the region, and are covered in mist that shrouds granite castles, vineyards and pazo manor houses. The area is characterized by moderate year-round temperatures, ocean breezes and annual rainfall up to three times the national average. The damp Atlantic-influenced climate is balanced by over 2,200 hours of sunshine. This ensures that Albariño from Rías Baixas ripens fully to produce wines with medium-to-high natural acidity and a delightful aromatic profile.
The soils of Rías Baixas are fairly uniform in the five sub-regions, dominated by granite with some schist. Large rivers and tributaries have left a combination of clay, silt, sand and gravel deposits. Soils have an extremely high level of minerality and acidity – ideal conditions for Albariño that contribute to the food-friendly character of the wines.
The coastal landscape of Rías Baixas is irregular, marked by a series of jagged inlets known as “rías”. The name Rías Baixas translates to “lower rías” in Galician and refers to five estuaries – Ría de Muros y Noia, Ría de Arousa, Ría de Pontevedra, Ría de Vigo and Ría de Miño – extending for 90 miles from Santiago de Compostela to the Portuguese border. The rías mix fresh and salt water to sustain rich maritime life – and define the distinctive geography of the region.
The five distinct sub-regions of Rías Baixas encompass varying micro-climates that differ by topography and proximity to the rivers and sea.
Planting Albariño at the proper height and exposure to ensure even, healthy ripening is essential to quality. Vines are traditionally widely spaced and trained on granite stone pergolas. Most vines are trained on a wire trellis called a parra anchored by granite posts; up to seven feet high, parras allow breezes to flow through for maximum circulation to prevent mildew and to promote even ripening. Ripened grape bunches form a ceiling-like canopy and are handharvested. Some vineyards use a double cordon system or espaldera. Yields are low, ranging from three to five tons per acre.
Winemaking in Rías Baixas balances tradition with modern techniques across a wide range of styles. Most wineries use wild yeast and some deploy malolactic fermentation to balance acidity levels. Sobre lías, or extended contact with the lees, is a preferred method to enhance complexity and ageability. The añadas anteriores style wines that rest on the lees are particularly ageworthy.

Wine is often a family business in Rías Baixas supported by many small growers. FUN FACT: More than 50% of the winemakers in Rías Baixas are women, a hold-over from the days when women managed affairs on land while the men of Galicia were at sea.
“The County of Tea” is named after the river Tea, a tributary of the Miño River. Located in a fairly mountainous area along the Miño, this is the second largest sub-zone, with granite-slate and sedimentary soils, and most inland. Condado do Tea is a warmer, drier area, with an average temperature of 59º F that can soar to 104º F during the summer.
Bodegas As Laxas has a long and rich winemaking tradition that dates back to 1862. Family-owned and proud to be one of the first wineries in DO Rías Baixas, As Laxas is located in Arbo on the banks of the the Miño River, a warmer area ideal for ripening. The vineyards are over 30 years old, planted on south-facing granite terraces between 500 to 650 feet. The winery upholds tradition in harmony with nature, and has also evolved over time to adopt the most modern wine production techniques.

SUB-REGION: O ROSAL
Situated in the northern half of the region, Val do Salnés features the most coastline and is consequently the coolest and dampest of the five sub-regions. It is known as the birthplace of the Albariño grape. Located on the Atlantic coast, it surrounds the historic town of Cambados. This is the original and oldest sub-zone with the most area under vine and the highest concentration of wineries. The soil is granitic and rocky with alluvial top soil, and an average temperature of just 55º F.
Attis is the passion project of owners and brothers Robustiano and Baldomero Fariña, who, together with enologist Jean François Hebrard, have set out to produce unique wines that capture the essence of Val do Salnés and the Atlantic climate and terroir. Small production and highly nuanced, Attis wines are artisanal by nature, crafted through careful selection and micro-vinification from small plots.

Working with small parcels in the Salnés Valley, Pazo Cilleiro focuses on fresh and elegant Albariño wines that showcase Atlantic origins. The name "Cilleiro" means "Cellarmaster," and pays tribute to the first winemakers of the sea, the monks who formed the nearby Armenteira monastery, craftsmen who made "white wines to touch heaven."
