G R I E V E A LETTER OF GRATITUDE
A signature accomplishment of the 2024-25 school year was the launch of our Strategic Plan, Tradition and Transformation, the vision for the bright future of Episcopal Day, a vision grounded in our powerful past
The 2024-25 year carried on the beautiful traditions of Episcopal Day School: Fall Festival, Blessing of the Animals, Donut Day, overnight retreats, and May Day Our eighth graders inspired us with their poise, grace, wisdom, and humor in their Chapel Talks
We also celebrated the extraordinary successes of our eighth graders and their impressive matriculation to a broad range of exceptional high schools across the Bay Area They leave us as kind, confident, and courageous leaders, ready to make their mark on the world, as evidenced by the accomplishments of our alumni In the spring we honored Dario Ghamgosar, from the class of 2019, with our 2025 Agent of Change Award Dario’s work with ParaRow, a program that makes rowing accessible for athletes with disabilities, and his service with Grassroots Ecology, a local nonprofit focused on community-based environmental restoration are both reflections of Episcopal Day’s mission in action At graduation, we were thrilled to welcome alumnus Michael Churich back to campus to deliver a captivating graduation address Drawing on his experiences as a Mustang and his football journey at UCLA, Michael delivered a compelling and heartfelt address that reminded us how Episcopal Day’s lessons endure long after students leave our campus
We also engaged in transformational work in our academic program: We revamped our schedule, recreated our English Language Arts program in Lower School, invested in our faculty evaluation and feedback systems, welcomed an Associate Head of School for Academics, a Dean of Students in Middle School, and a DEIB leadership team
The first two pillars of the Strategic Plan are Transformative and Purposeful Education and Curiosity and Critical Thinking, which call on us to create a program founded on depth and complexity in thinking and an interconnected and purposeful program – tied together through the arts, through our study of religion, and through a commitment to external connection through service learning The third pillar, Access and Belonging, amplifies our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Vision Statement that commits to a program where students see themselves in the curriculum, where they challenge assumptions and interrupt bias, where they see how advantage and power may diminish a just world The vision statement also commits to ensuring that we are a diverse community in our student and parent body, in our faculty and professional community, and in the Boardroom
The fourth pillar, stewardship and strength, outlines our goals for our finances and facilities: We must have healthy enrollment; we must have a financial assistance program that continues to make Episcopal Day School broadly accessible; we must have facilities that support the innovative teaching and learning of our signature academic program In this pillar, we state that we are committed to a capital campaign, and in the spring of 2025, we engaged CCS to conduct a feasibility study Additionally, we exceeded our annual Mustang Fund goal, raising $1,081,000 to support vital aspects of our program, including math and learning specialists, teaching assistants, differentiated math instruction, field trips, and a robust Chapel program
The last pillar, one more about tradition than transformation, asserts that we will continue to be a school that, at its core, is all about community That is who we have always been, that is who we will always be
We could not have the school that we have without the boundless devolution of our parent and volunteer community and without the stalwart support of the Church, Fr Eric, Senior Warden Carol Kalb, and the entire Vestry Under the thoughtful and steady leadership of President Katharine Wilson, the Day School Parents Association made magic happen for our students throughout the year, and I’m grateful to the Board of Trustees for their partnership and for the steadfast leadership of Board President Chris Chaudoir
I close by expressing my gratitude to our students Thank you for your bright smiles, big ideas, and even bigger hearts

Family Math Night brought a wonderful sense of energy to both campuses as families stepped into classrooms to experience the joyful, hands-on math learning happening at Episcopal Day Students eagerly welcomed their parents and guardians into the spaces where they explore number sense, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning each day Guided by our dedicated teachers and Math Specialist, Mary Kimbell, families rotated through activities designed to highlight that everyone is a “math person” that the only requirement is to be a person who engages with curiosity, tries new strategies, and embraces the fun of doing math together

From puzzles and collaborative challenges to games that sparked excitement and teamwork, the evening was filled with laughter, discovery, and meaningful conversation
This celebration of learning showcased the strength of our math program and the ways students confidently apply concepts through real experiences The night also reflected the deep partnership between home and school, as families joined in exploring the mindset that math is accessible, creative, and empowering Family Math Night reminded us how shared learning builds connection and strengthens our vibrant Episcopal Day community

Episcopal Day School once again came together to honor Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, beginning the morning with a meaningful community walk led by our fifth graders Students, families, faculty, and professional community members gathered at Central Park before making their way to campus, joining thousands of others nationwide in recognizing Ruby Bridges’ extraordinary courage and lifelong commitment to justice Walking side-by-side reminded us of the strength that comes from unity and the importance of standing up for what is right
This year ’ s observance also included our first-ever Ruby Bridges Chapel, where Mrs Nielsen delivered a powerful Chapel Talk reflecting on how every person—regardless of age has the capacity to create positive change Her message encouraged students to use their voices, act with kindness, and remember that small steps toward justice can inspire transformation
We are incredibly proud of our fifth graders for leading the walk with confidence and purpose, and equally grateful for the enthusiasm of our entire Episcopal Day community Together, we honored Ruby Bridges’ legacy while embracing our shared responsibility to build a more compassionate and inclusive world

Tradition and Transformation establishes five pillars for our future:

The Strategic Plan aims to define a curriculum grounded in the humanities, sciences, math and arts, with a clear scope and sequence that prioritizes depth and complexity The Plan emphasizes building a signature academic program that amplifies students’ voices, and fosters essential skills such as critical thinking, communication and leadership. It also seeks to optimize the school’s longstanding commitment to social justice and service learning
The Plan addresses pedagogical practices, focusing on establishing a universal teaching philosophy and investing in professional development.
The Plan underscores the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), aiming to make these principles integral to the school’s identity and academic program By intertwining its Episcopal values with a forward-thinking approach to education, Episcopal Day School aims to create a learning community that is not only academically rigorous but also deeply committed to empathy, compassion, and civic engagement
The Strategic Plan outlines goals for sustainable enrollment, financial strength, and facility improvements to support innovative teaching and learning.
The Strategic Plan emphasizes the importance of community engagement, aiming to ensure all stakeholders understand and can articulate the school’s unique mission, values, and educational philosophy
Read more about our Strategic Plan on our website.

The 2025 Middle School Science Fair was an inspiring display of creativity, dedication, and scientific inquiry Over the course of the week, students evaluated each other's projects and reflected on their peers ’ findings, demonstrating the value of collaboration and constructive feedback The experiments, which spanned a range of topics, were the result of weeks of work hypothesizing, testing, and presenting data in creative and engaging ways
A standout moment of the fair was middle school taking their lower school buddies through the fair and exploring the ideas presented in each of the projects as buddy pairs Lower school students were able to engage with the incredible science work happening in middle school, while middle schoolers further practiced their presentation skills and bonded with their buddies over their projects
The Science Fair was a powerful reminder of the incredible potential of our students and the importance of fostering curiosity, problem-solving, and a passion for discovery We’re excited to continue supporting these future innovators as they explore new frontiers in STEM!

Episcopal Day School was delighted to host our first-ever Multicultural Potluck, an evening that beautifully showcased the diversity, warmth, and spirit of our community The event brought together more than 140 students, families, and faculty members, each contributing a dish that represented meaningful traditions, cherished memories, and cultural pride Tables filled with foods from around the world created an atmosphere rich with color and connection, reminding us how shared meals can spark conversation, nurture understanding, and celebrate the stories that shape who we are Guests were invited to explore new flavors, honor one another’s heritage, and appreciate the many ways our community continues to grow in openness and belonging

In 2025, Episcopal Day School had the privilege of reconnecting with some of our remarkable alumni at our annual Alumni Homecoming event We celebrated the high school graduation of our Class of 2021 alumni, who have made impressive strides since their time at EDS From their eighth-grade years to the triumphs they’ve experienced in high school, we are incredibly proud of their growth and accomplishments We look forward to seeing where their journeys will take them next
They matriculated and were admitted to an incredibly diverse set of colleges all across the United States, and will be pursuing everything from Mathematics at NYU to Biology, English, Music, and Computer Science We’ve compiled a list of the colleges they were admitted to below, we can’t wait to keep up with their adventures in and post-college Class of 2021, we couldn’t be more proud!

His passion, commitment, and tangible impact inspired our middle school students, reminding them that meaningful change often begins with empathy, creativity, and the willingness to take action

As always, the excitement started building up weeks before the big day this year Students from pre-K through sixth grade were busy practicing their dances for weeks before the day, and school families continued the tradition of making colorful paper bouquets and boutonnieres for our eighth grade graduates Students proudly donned these on the big day carrying a little piece of their individual school families with them into this next chapter of their academic careers
This year, the festivities kicked off at 10 am with a special Chapel service led by our graduating eighth graders The students were introduced to the community for the first time as the ‘Class of 2025’ and they shared touching memories expressed gratitude for their families friends and teachers and offered heartfelt prayers Each eighth grader said a little something at the pulpit and it was a sentimental reminder of how much they’ve grown over the course of their years at EDS We hope you were as blown away as we were witnessing the wisdom and maturity of our graduates
It wouldn’t be May Day without our tradition of students in grades pre-K through sixth performing for their eighth grade peers, and following the Chapel service, we headed to the lawn for some incredible dance performances which the seventh graders helped to MC

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make May Day a success Your support and enthusiasm are what make our community so special We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did and look forward to more fun celebrations in the future
Here’s to many more years of celebrating together!

This year ’ s Chapel Talks from the eighth grade were a moving display of personal growth and self-reflection The students courageously shared their experiences, revealing moments of vulnerability that resonated deeply with the community From stories about embracing a new sport to cherishing our unique identities, these talks highlighted the strength it takes to be open about one ’ s challenges and triumphs Each talk served as a testament to the power of resilience and self-acceptance
Several students reflected on how they overcame obstacles related to their sense of identity, including the courage required to embrace change even when it doesn’t feel good to do so These discussions of growth were paired with stories of perseverance, showing that we can’t expect immediate success without going through the uncomfortable process of making mistakes The courage to lean on loved ones and embrace the broad spectrum of emotions that come with hard times was another common theme, and students showed that wisdom is an acquired skill that even the smallest among us can display
In addition, there were powerful moments where students shared the difficulty of dealing with others' expectations and the pressures of perfectionism They encouraged their peers to embrace imperfections and be kind to themselves during times of growth These talks reinforced that setbacks are part of the journey, and it is through these moments that we build resilience and self-confidence
The Chapel Talks this year created a sense of community and support among the eighth-grade class The applause, affirmations, and high-fives that followed each talk underscored the shared understanding that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness This celebration of individual growth and collective learning marked a poignant moment in the class’s journey, leaving a lasting impression on the entire school community
