C H A U D O I R A LETTER OF GRATITUDE
What a tremendous year for Episcopal Day School of St Matthew, our children, and our community! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to offer these reflections and notes of gratitude for the 2023-2024 school year While they only highlight some of the amazing and transformative work completed during the year, they exemplify what makes Episcopal Day School such a special place Of course, none of this would be possible without the dedication of our faculty, administrative professionals, our Head of School, and her leadership team, as well as, most importantly, the generosity of our parent community We also appreciate our relationship with St Matthew's Church, The Reverend Eric Hinds and the Church Vestry For all of this, we extend a heartfelt thank you!
On September 26, 2023, we enthusiastically and formally welcomed our new Head of School, Ms Quincey Grieve, at her installation ceremony in St Matthew’s Church The installation was the culmination of months of work by the Head of School search committee, led by Nicole Magaddino and Steve LeSieur, and the Head of School transition committee, led by Meghan Crowell and Elaine Chang Thanks to each of their efforts, the hiring, installation, celebration, and transition were flawless
Quincey joined us with over twenty-five years of experience as an educator and leader, expertise that she used, along with her academic leadership team, Doug Jolly and Katherine McDougall, to review Episcopal Day School’s curriculum, schedule, and pedagogy Acting quickly and with the Board's full support, Quincey and her leadership team expedited Phase 1 of the Strategic Plan to implement changes across grade levels to ensure academic rigor and teaching continuity while revising class schedules to enhance the learning process The results have been immediate and impressive, with students and teachers embracing the changes and flourishing
With the academic foundation established, the Board began the critical work of developing Phase 2 of the Strategic Plan The Strategic Plan committee, co-chaired by Karen Andreachhi and David Willard, devoted countless hours engaging with the school community, hosting working sessions, and working with Quincey and her leadership team to develop actionable strategies to achieve our primary goal - establish Episcopal Day School as the preeminent pre-K through eighth grade institution in the country Through that effort, a comprehensive Strategic Plan - Tradition & Transformation - has been introduced
On the facilities front, the Building and Grounds committee, led by Kirk DeClark, seized an opportunity to expand our school’s footprint with a lease of office space at 109 Baldwin Avenue The space was quickly occupied by our Finance Team led by Cherie Patterson, our Development Office led by Kendra Mastain, and our Admissions Office led by Tish Scola, unlocking space in the lower and middle school to centralize the academic leadership team and provide new learning space The committee also continued to identify opportunities to expand the school footprint and, working with our Athletic Director, Toni King secured field space for our outdoor sports practices Special congratulations to Toni for celebrating her 25th year at Episcopal Day School
Thank you to the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging committee, led by James Evangelista and Reiko Osaki
Together with a newly appointed DEIB leadership team, Brandon Kraft, Alvaro Loza, and Roxy Nielsen, the work of implanting the DEIB Strategic Plan through a comprehensive vision statement continued Ratified in November 2023, the vision statement emphasizes that we are “ a compassionate community of learners founded on the Episcopal ethos of exploring the complexity of our world, working towards justice for all people, and embracing diversity and the dignity of every human being” Realizing the DEIB vision statement in teaching and learning how to understand and engage in respectful discourse concerning different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives is an ongoing priority
The Trusteeship committee continued to review and assess the Board composition to ensure diverse backgrounds, ideas, and expertise Led by Kathryn Collins, the committee welcomed four new Board members to the 2023- 2024 Board and will continue to seek community involvement and volunteers to assist in Board efforts
The Board Finance committee, led by Stu McLaughlin for a third year (and concluding his 7th year as a Board member) and Director of Finance and Operations Cherie Patterson, continued to navigate school finances Their efforts ensured that the financial stability of Episcopal Day School is sound and that it continues to be healthy and strong moving forward
Central to the financial well-being of the school is the generosity of our community, both in time and financial support The incredible number of volunteer hours and overwhelming amount given to the Mustang Fund is extraordinary and much appreciated - every minute and every donation! It is with great pride that we report the results of the 2023-2024 Mustang Fund With 95% participation from our current families, 97% of our faculty and professional community, and 100% of our trustees, the Mustang Fund reached $1,126,754 This exceeded the $1,000,000 goal and was made possible through the ongoing leadership of the Board Development committee, led by Dale Chang, each of our Mustang Fund Class Captains, and our Director of Development Kendra Mastain
I’d also like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to the Day School Parent Association and its 2023-2024 President, Erin Rugar The DSPA is responsible for all the wonderful events and programs around the school, including the Fall Festival, Donut Day, Parent Education, Faculty and Professional Community Appreciation, Service Learning, and Class Captains to name a few Thank you to the over forty DSPA volunteer committee leaders that organize and implement this amazing work
Finally, I cannot conclude these remarks without acknowledging and profusely thanking our former Board Chair, Nicole Magaddino Nicole’s unyielding devotion to Episcopal Day School, her dedication, time, and effort in supporting Episcopal Day through unprecedented events during her term have left us stronger as a community and as an institution, ready to take on the future Whether it was assisting in renaming the school, leading the update to the school’s mission and vision, the effort to hire an interim Head of School and h year as Chair, Nicole has left an indelible, positive impact

OF
G R I E V E A LETTER OF GRATITUDE
My first year at Episcopal Day School was filled with wonderful “firsts” and powerful memories The class of 2024 welcomed me with a card, a collage of words describing their class “Agog” they said about themselves They were agog at the world I will forever be “agoged” by their humor and love and laughter – and their warm welcome
In September, my Installation Ceremony, a celebration of a new Head in an Episcopal School, could not have been a more warm welcome for me and my family It was my first glimpse into the true awesomeness of this community and the beautiful partnership between the Church and the School The pews overflowed with families; the children filled the Church with their passionate voices; gifts of welcome warmed my heart My children and extended family gathered from across the country and marveled at the magnificence of Episcopal Day School They were so proud – and nothing could have made me prouder
The work of the year was in full swing from day one The CAIS accreditation process was well underway in the 2022-23 year with a robust self-study, which produced a comprehensive report submitted in December 2023 The accrediting team visited campus in March 2024, with the School earning a full seven-year accreditation over the summer
A year-long process of creating our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Vision Statement culminated in a statement approved by the Board of Trustees in November 2023 This document serves as the guidepost for our DEIB work, with two core commitments: a commitment to curriculum, program, and pedagogy that develop in students the knowledge and skills to understand our vast world and deeply varied human experiences while fostering a deep sense of belonging for each student – and a commitment to building a diverse faculty, student body, and Board of Trustees
In January 2024, we launched a Strategic Planning process A steering committee of faculty, parents, administrators, and trustees worked closely with the consulting group, Triangle Associates, on a self-study in priority setting sessions Every constituency in the school was invited to participate in surveys, focus groups, and workshops to dig deep into our strengths and our areas of growth and to think expansively about our future In the spring, we determined we should divide the Strategic Plan into Phase I and Phase II, launching Phase I – a laser focus on the academic program We revised the schedule, introduced a new English Language Arts curriculum in Lower School, and committed to a new, robust faculty feedback and evaluation system The impact of this work on the academic program was transformative and immediate, establishing a powerful foundation for Phase II of the Plan
Additionally, a primary focus of the 2023-24 school year was planning for – and investing in – the leadership team to carry Episcopal Day School into the future We hired a new Head of School for Academics, Brandon Kraft We created a new DEIB Team and hired a new Director of DEIB, Roxy Nielsen And we created a new position for a Dean of Students in Middle School, Alvaro Loza These additional resources and reallocated responsibilities have already been instrumental in positioning the School to deliver on the commitment of the Strategic Plan
All of the joys of the Episcopal Day experience continued throughout the 2023-24 school year Seventh and eighth-grade students traveled to Yosemite and the Episcopal retreat St Dorothy’s Rest in the fall; in the spring, students ventured to the Gold Country, Big Sur, Pinnacles, Bishop’s Ranch, and Washington, DC Eighth-grade students mesmerized the community with their wisdom and grace in their Chapel Talks; the entire community gathered in awe and appreciation for our annual May Day celebration On graduation day, we were thrilled to welcome alumnus Hugh Brooks ’14 back to campus to deliver a captivating graduation address, and we marveled at the accomplishments of our extraordinary eighth-grade class – delighting in how they have grown at Episcopal Day and appreciating that ninety percent of the class would matriculate at one of their top two high school choices
The financial strength of the school is owed to our robust enrollment and the enormous generosity of the Episcopal Day School community We had a record 307 students matriculating for the 2023-24 year, and we surpassed our Mustang Fund goal of a million dollars, closing the year with $1,126,754 in total contributions, with 95 percent parent participation and 97 percent faculty participation We were able to invest in our program in transformative ways – with exceptional hiring and powerful curricular advancements – as a direct result of our strong enrollment and inspiring philanthropic commitment of our outstanding community
The 2023-24 school year was another year of remarkable parent participation in the life of Episcopal Day School I’m grateful for the partnership of the Day School Parents Association Under the steadfast and gracious leadership of President Erin Ruger, the DSPA made magic happen for our students throughout the year From Fall Festival to the May Day celebration, the DSPA stands side by side with the Episcopal Day team We simply could not have the program we have without the boundless devolution of our parent community
Finally, I want to express my deep appreciation for the support I received during my first year as Head of School I would especially like to thank Meghan Crowell and Elaine Chang, who as leaders of the Head of School Transition Team, were tirelessly committed to overseeing every aspect of my transition to Episcopal Day Fr Eric and the entire Church community welcomed me with such generosity of spirit and wisdom The Leadership Team were my partners every step of the way The Board of Trustees inspired me with their strategic thinking and unfailing devotion to the School
I extend my deepest gratitude to Chair of the Board of Trustees, Nicole Magaddino, for extending her term as Chair to ensure continuity during the transition to a new Head of School Nicole has an uncanny ability to see every angle of an issue and to understand and value multiple perspectives Her wise counsel and good humor were invaluable in my first year, and they will carry me forward through my Episcopal Day journey Nicole’s leadership has left an indelible mark on Episcopal Day I will always remember the 2023-24 school year for the joy and excitement I felt as I discovered every special “ new ” Episcopal Day moment, for the friendships that blossomed over the year, for the pre-K students who will, before we know it, walk across the stage as proud graduates ready to embrace the world with the poise, grace, and gravitas of an Episcopal Day School student
“ Today is our day. What will we do?“
As the 2024 school year comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the remarkable journey we ' ve shared and the milestones that have defined this transformative year This year has been a testament to the dedication of our educators, the resilience and brilliance of our students, and the unwavering support of our community
Among our many accomplishments, we proudly completed the formation of our Advancement Team, working purposefully to establish a dynamic and powerful marketing and communications strategy that highlights the strength of our school and programs This effort culminated in the launch of a 40-page issue of Our Day magazine Little Voices Big Impact a celebration of student voice and youth activism that resonated deeply with our community and which can be found online These achievements along with countless moments of learning and growth have marked the 2023-2024 school year as a truly extraordinary chapter in our school’s story
On behalf of the class of 2024 and our entire academic team, we extend our deepest gratitude for your support, generosity, and commitment to our shared mission Each success this year was made possible by the collective efforts of everyone involved, and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved together
This year has demonstrated the transformative power of an academically rigorous curriculum, a vibrant and compassionate community, and a shared commitment to nurturing leaders of positive change The class of 2024 has embodied our mission to inspire intellectual curiosity instill confidence nurture moral courage and build character They have served their community through impactful service learning events broadened their horizons in the classroom built meaningful connections within their community and reflected on their growth and values through poignant Chapel Talks
As the class of 2024 graduates, they carry these principles into the world, prepared to make a meaningful impact Meanwhile, the class of 2025 stands ready to embrace the path forward, inspired by their predecessors’ legacies and eager to shape their own
This next section is dedicated to celebrating the moments and accomplishments that made our past year so memorable We could not have done it without you

OnSeptember18,EpiscopalDay celebratedourannualFallFestival withthehelpofsomeincredible DSPAVolunteers.
The annual Fall Festival at Episcopal Day School of St Matthew is always a highlight of the year, bringing together students, families, and alumni for an unforgettable day of celebration and connection This year, the festival was especially meaningful as it marked another successful gathering of the community, showcasing the school’s vibrant spirit and deep-rooted traditions
From the moment we started, the campus came alive with laughter, excitement, and the joyful buzz of families enjoying carnival games, rides, and delicious food The event serves as more than just a fun afternoon together it’s an opportunity for the community to come together, strengthen bonds, and create lasting memories Whether it was students racing to the dunk tank or alumni reconnecting with old friends, the festival highlighted the warmth and camaraderie that define Episcopal Day School
Beyond the festivities, the Fall Festival is also a reminder of the school’s commitment to inclusivity and tradition. With each passing year, the festival continues to embody the values of community, and joy that are at the heart of Episcopal Day School The festival’s success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the DSPA volunteers, faculty, professional community, and families who come together to make this event possible
As the 2024 school year comes to a close, we also celebrate a remarkable first year under the leadership of our new Head of School, Quincey Grieve Quincey’s journey at EDS began with a beautiful installation ceremony hosted for the entire community in our historic 158-year-old chapel, where she embraced the charge to lead Episcopal Day School with grace, vision, and a deep commitment to connection and fostering academic leadership
Quincey’s inaugural year has been defined by her dedication to listening, learning, and collaborating with students, faculty, and families to build upon the already incredible qualities that EDS fosters
Through her leadership, we ’ ve taken significant strides in building upon the foundation of academic excellence and the compassionate community that define our school We started our strategic planning process and from joining field trips to championing student voice and youth activism, This year of firsts has set the stage for continued growth as we brace ourselves for an exciting future, rooted in our mission and values

Grandfriends' Day was filled with excitement as students eagerly greeted their grandfriends on both campuses On October 19, Baldwin campus kicked off the celebration with a welcome breakfast in Julia Beylard Hall, followed by a Chapel service Lower school students performed songs, led by music teachers Maggie Eggert and Dace Samta, setting a joyful tone for the day Students then showed their grandfriends around their classrooms, sharing their work and engaging in activities like interviews, games, and exploring the creatively decorated bulletin boards
The celebration continued on October 20 at Charles House, where pre-K and kindergarten students treated their grandfriends to breakfast before performing a medley of their Halloween songs The day was full of laughter and connection, making it a memorable time for both students and grandfriends to enjoy together
Grandfriends' Day serves as a beautiful reminder of the strong bonds that tie our community together across generations It was a day to celebrate not only the special relationship between students and their grandfriends but also the warmth, tradition, and sense of belonging that define Episcopal Day School
On November 14, Episcopal Day School marked Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day with a meaningful tradition led by our fifth graders Students, faculty, and our professional community walked together in honor of Ruby Bridges, whose courage and commitment to equality paved the way for future generations
The walk not only commemorates Ruby's pioneering role in the civil rights movement but also serves as a reminder of the importance of standing against racism, bullying, and injustice Students joined others from across the country, raising awareness about these critical issues while celebrating youth activism and the power of community
We are incredibly proud of our fifth graders for leading the walk and inspiring us all with their leadership and dedication Their example, along with the support of the entire Episcopal Day community, made this event a powerful moment to reflect on Ruby Bridges' legacy and the ongoing fight for equality and justice
The 2023-2024 Middle School Science Fair was an inspiring display of creativity, dedication, and scientific inquiry Over the course of the week, students evaluated each other's projects and reflected on their peers ’ findings, demonstrating the value of collaboration and constructive feedback The experiments, which spanned a range of topics, were the result of weeks of work hypothesizing, testing, and presenting data in creative and engaging ways
A standout moment of the fair was the recognition of three sixth graders Ethan, Aarav, and Charlie for their exceptional achievements at the SMCOE STEM Fair Aarav’s “Can Plants Grow on Mars?” project won first place in the Earth, Space, and Environmental Sciences category, while Charlie’s “Solutions for Rising Sea Levels in the Bay Area and Beyond” earned top honors in Material Science Ethan’s “Poppin’ Cork” project claimed first place in Physics Their hard work and innovation earned them spots in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge in September 2024, and we can’t wait to see what they accomplish next
The Science Fair was a powerful reminder of the incredible potential of our students and the importance of fostering curiosity, problem-solving, and a passion for discovery We’re excited to continue supporting these future innovators as they explore new frontiers in STEM!
In 2024, Episcopal Day School had the privilege of reconnecting with some of our remarkable alumni through two meaningful events First, we celebrated the high school graduation of our Class of 2020 alumni, who have made impressive strides since their time at EDS From their eighth-grade years to the triumphs they’ve experienced in high school, we are incredibly proud of their growth and accomplishments We look forward to seeing where their journeys will take them next
We also had the honor of recognizing our first-ever Alumni Agents of Change, Nik DS and Jayson M, both graduates of the Class of 2023 These outstanding young men were selected to work with the Kino Border Initiative at the US-Mexico border during their midwinter break, an experience that deepened their understanding of advocacy and social justice Nik and Jayson returned to campus to speak with our middle school students and faculty about their experiences, sharing valuable insights on using one ’ s voice to drive positive change Their inspiring story was featured in this year ’ s Our Day magazine
These events are a testament to the lasting impact of our alumni and the ways in which they continue to embody the values instilled during their time at EDS We are deeply grateful for their contributions and proud to see the difference they are making in the world
As always, the excitement started building up weeks before the big day this year Students from pre-K through sixth grade were busy practicing their dances for weeks before the day and school families even continued the tradition of making colorful paper bouquets and boutonnieres for our eighth grade graduates Students proudly donned these on the big day proudly carrying a little piece of their individual school families with them into this next chapter of their academic careers
This year, the festivities kicked off at 10 am with a special Chapel service led by our graduating eighth graders The students were introduced to the community for the first time as the ‘Class of 2024’, and they shared touching memories, expressed gratitude for their families, friends, and teachers, and offered heartfelt prayers Each eighth grader said a little something at the pulpit, and it was a sentimental reminder of how much they’ve grown over the course of their years at EDS We hope you were as blown away as we were witnessing the wisdom and maturity of our graduates
Of course, it wouldn’t be May Day without our tradition of students in grades pre-K through sixth performing for their eighth grade peers, and following the Chapel service, we headed to the lawn for some incredible dance performances which the seventh graders helped to MC
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make May Day a success Your support and enthusiasm are what make our community so special We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did and look forward to more fun celebrations in the future

173 Episcopal Day Mustangs played on one or more of our 32 teams throughout the year. Collectively, they attended 324 practices, and competed in 194 games while positively representing the Episcopal Day School. Go Mustangs!
This year ’ s Chapel Talks from the eighth grade were a moving display of personal growth and self-reflection The students courageously shared their experiences, revealing moments of vulnerability that resonated deeply with the community From stories about embracing one ' s height to tackling self-doubt and the fear of looking foolish, these talks highlighted the strength it takes to be open about one ’ s challenges and triumphs Each talk served as a testament to the power of resilience and self-acceptance
Several students reflected on how they overcame obstacles related to their sense of identity, including standing out in a crowd or learning a new skill while feeling inexperienced These discussions of growth were paired with stories of perseverance, showing that we can’t expect immediate success without going through the uncomfortable process of making mistakes The courage to push through feelings of foolishness in order to improve was a theme that echoed across multiple talks, emphasizing that greatness often starts with humility
In addition, there were powerful moments where students shared the difficulty of dealing with others' expectations and the pressures of perfectionism They encouraged their peers to embrace imperfections and be kind to themselves during times of growth These talks reinforced that setbacks are part of the journey, and it is through these moments that we build resilience and self-confidence
The Chapel Talks this year created a sense of community and support among the eighth-grade class The applause, affirmations, and high-fives that followed each talk underscored the shared understanding that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness This celebration of individual growth and collective learning marked a poignant moment in the class’s journey, leaving a lasting impression on the entire school community
