Redwood will target math, reading, and writing this year to help students increase skills in their deficit areas. Each grade level will work at mastering math facts by using classroom strategies. Through the use of our RTIi system staff will use core curriculum and intervention supports to serve students. Each grade level will show growth in their deficit skill as indicated by their fall 100% meeting data. This year Redwood staff will also make our Social Emotional curriculum and lessons a focus to continue to support our students.

About Our School
BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES
Each year we review and practice common area rules and expectations including how to use playground equipment safely. We follow school board policies that govern our interventions and responses to bullying and harassment. Our main efforts are in prevention through curriculum and creating an environment that is inclusive and positive. We implement Kelso’s Choice and Second Steps curriculum K-5 year-long as well as the supplemental Second Steps Bully Prevention Program by the end of October annually. Our new Health Curriculum allows teachers to not only teach students the new health standards, but also focuses on healthy social and emotional skill development for all of our students, grades K-5th.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In addition to band and strings that is offered to 4th and 5th graders, we offer numerous opportunities outside of the regular school day including: Battle of the Books, Student Council, and a variety of after school clubs.
PARENT ENGAGEMENT
We have an active and supportive Parent Teacher Association (PTA) as well as parent representatives on our Site Council and the district Parent Advisory Council. We communicate with families in a variety of ways including: email, monthly building newsletters, messages through Parent Square, classroom messages on newsletters and/or homework and our building website. Parent conferences are held once a year but we welcome parent meetings as requested. We welcome family volunteers to work in our classrooms, school wide events and chaperone field trips.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
One of our biggest community partners is OPTIONS of Southern Oregon to provide mental health supports for our students. Our Public Safety Department partners with us to provide training with fire safety, safety protocols and they make classroom visits. We host parent education nights including our very successful READY! for Kindergarten events held two times a year annually. Every grade level attends local field trips partnering with a variety of community organizations and businesses. Grade levels also plan presentations with local community partners to educate students about everything from leading a healthy lifestyle to learning about different careers in our community.

About Our School
BULLYING, HARASSMENT, AND SAFETY POLICIES
To ensure a safe and secure learning environment for all of our students, our school promotes Trojan PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence) through our schoolwide PBIS system. We believe safety in all its forms - physical, emotional, and psychological - are essential for all students, families, and staff to feel safe if they are to be contributing members of the school community. We have a comprehensive set of policies that prohibit bullying and harassment, and we have established multiple reporting and accountability measures designed to assist South Middle School to respond quickly to these incidents. Our policies can be found in our Student/Parent Handbook.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
South Middle students can participate in a vibrant music program - Band (Jazz Band, Brass, Woodwinds), Orchestra (Strings and Chamber), and Choir. Students may select from a wide variety of electives such as Art, Media Arts, Family and Consumer Science, and Outdoor Education. Athletically, we offer Cross Country, Track, Volleyball, Football, Basketball, and Wrestling. Students are able to participate in a variety of activities: Jr. Royallettes/Dance & Guard, Yearbook, Brain Bowl, and many others.
PARENT ENGAGEMENT
Engaged parents/guardians are a key component in the academic success of our students. South Middle School and District 7 provide multiple forums for parents/guardians to become involved in their student's education, their school, and the larger Grants Pass community. We believe it is essential for parents/guardians to be active participants whether their student is thriving or experiencing challenges. South has an involved and active PTSA that supports students and staff throughout the year.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Grants Pass School District values the contributions of its community partners. Local businesses, social service organizations, and numerous individual volunteers add to the richness of the D7 experience, both inside and outside of classrooms. Volunteers are welcome at our school, and are a valued source of knowledge and expertise benefiting students and staff.

We have formed teacher teams to focus on students who need more support and help. Our focus this year is on Engagement. We will engage our students through establishing strong routines in the classroom, classroom instruction that includes Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading, and establishing strong relationships in the classroom.
