The Aftermarket Profile is back with all the information you need to know about what your fellow shop owners and technicians are purchasing for tools and equipment.

hen I’m writing an article, I always have a set word count in mind that I know I need to reach in order to fill the page. When I’m planning my day, I have a set number of tasks I must perform. Numbers dictate a large part of what many people do on a daily basis.

For you, the technician or shop owner, I’m sure numbers like how many repairs you get done in a day, how long a repair will take you to complete, or the number of customers frequenting your shop, are all numbers that are top of mind.

In this month’s issue, we have our ninth annual Aftermarket Profile (pg. 16). This yearly purchasing study offers a few more numbers for you to take into consideration as you conduct your business. We gathered data from shop owners and technicians across the country, asking questions about the types of repairs and services you perform, the tools and equipment you own, your current and future purchasing plans, and much more.

Before we dive into the details, I just want to give a big thank you to the over 200 of you who responded to the survey. Without your help, this wouldn’t be possible!

With 80 percent of shops reporting that they have a diagnostician on staff, it’s no surprise that 70 percent of you noted that you plan on purchasing electrical tools/equipment and 53 percent plan on purchasing a scan tool this year. As the modern vehicle becomes more complex, so do the repairs needed to fix it, meaning tools and equipment will need to be updated to keep up with what’s on the market.

However, it’s not only tools and equipment that need updating. Up-todate training for these complex repairs is also a necessity. According to our findings, electrical/electronic systems (64 percent), hybrids/EVs (52 percent), and ADAS (39 percent) were among the top topics respondents noted as the biggest training opportunities.

Looking at data from last year’s survey and comparing it with this year’s results, training on the topics above is

becoming more pertinent. In 2023, the number of shops saying they worked on both hybrid and electric vehicles was 27 percent. That number has increased by four percent in only the past year. Additionally, the number of shops offering ADAS services has increased by two percent for a total of nine percent. Though these increases sound small, they will only continue to grow.

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A: There are plenty of under hoist stands in the market, some are infinitely adjustable such as this one. The thing that really makes the [Under Hoist Stand] unique amongst all the other stands that have been around forever is the quick release mechanism. If I’m servicing a vehicle, let’s say it’s a truck and I’m doing rear shock absorbers on [it], a typical stand I would have to crank that screw in the thread and keep cranking for what seems like forever. With this stand, you simply just release the pull mechanism, pull the saddle to the desired working height, and release the pull, and it’s there. It’s quick and easy to do these fast, quick-toservice height adjustments. It’s a time saver.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: We did a lot of our own personal research through the technicians we have here on staff. We had a lot of feedback from customers that said that adjusting the stand’s height is a time consuming process. Collectively, between our manufacturer and our internal folks, as well as our customers, we developed an under hoist stand that is revolutionary in the market. This is an exclusive Snap-on product.

Q: How do you see this product improving the lives of technicians and shop owners?

A: It’s all about time. Having worked in a shop myself, and done a lot of this type of work, I know that any time you can save, easy and fast is always what wins.

Q: What has the feedback been like from technicians who have purchase this tool?

A: What our customers told us after we launched the full height version of the under hoist stand, is that they were looking for a shorter version to do suspension work. We followed up with a launch of the UHSL 1500, the “L” meaning low. It’s half the distance of the full height version and is great

for doing suspension work. No longer does a technician have to get a ladder when a vehicle is at the full height on a lift, they can do service work halfway up with the short stand.

Another comment we received was, why didn’t someone think of this quick release mechanism sooner? Here at Snap-on, our products are here to make the job easier, faster, and to have a product that is unique and unlike any others in the market.

Q: Is there anything else you think our readers should know about the product?

A: We added, and it’s not unique to under hoist stands, a foot pedal which allows the user to make fine adjustments. Not only does it allow you to align components easier, but it also folds up for easy storage.

A: It is very easy to use.

A: It comes in a recloseable plastic holder with an insert showing tool information. It did not come with any accessories.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?

A: It comes with a card describing the tool usage and some instructions.

Q: What features did you like?

A: It’s very easy to use, and it’s durable. This particular part number is for large sizes ranging from 23/32” to 1-1/2” (18-38mm).

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: No, I think it works great. It is important to note that use with impacts will shorten the life of the tool and to use only at low speeds of 800 rpm or less.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: The large size worked great on damaged threads of the outer CV axle that were damaged, and a few large bolts in a tractor that were hammered out and had to be reused because new ones could not be located. I plan on purchasing a smaller size that will work on lug nut studs.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall?

A: I would rate this a 9.5. It’s a great time and money saver. It makes it possible to reuse the majority of bolts or similar externally threaded parts that might otherwise need to be replaced. It can also be used on some threads before removing the nut to prevent damage to threads.

careful I need to be to keep the socket on the extension. That saves time.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: If you can connect and disconnect a pneumatic tool to and from an air hose, and you are familiar with using socket extensions, then you will be able to use this product with ease and success.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: This set comes in a cardboard box with graphics and text showing and describing the features and benefits of the product. Inside the box are the three 3/8” drive impact extensions placed in a nice foam organizer that would work well in any toolbox or roll cart drawer. The set includes a 3”, 6”, and 12” extension.

Q: What features did you like?

A: There’s an anti-corrosion finish that gives me confidence that the product won’t rust. I also like the anodized aluminum locking mechanism. It appears to be assembled in a way that will allow for servicing the product if ever required even though the company offers a lifetime warranty. I mainly just like that they are locking extensions that are made for

impact use. I already own some locking extensions, but they are not designed and manufactured for impact use.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: At the time of this review, they only offer a 3/8” drive and 1/2” drive set with a 3”, 6”, and 12” extension. I hope that they offer more lengths and a 1/4” drive set in the future. The locking mechanism is a little bulky, but I don’t recall ever seeing a locking extension that didn’t have a bulky locking mechanism.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs do you use this tool for?

A: I like using these for removing and installing the battery hold-down blocks when replacing batteries. I also like using these for any underhood work where if a socket were to come off, it meant that I no longer own that socket. We also recently removed a transmission on a Subaru for a clutch replacement service. These extensions were used when removing the bell housing bolts.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: For anyone looking for a set of locking extensions for impact use, but you don’t want to spend a large sum of money, I’d say give these a try. I would rate these at an eight and that’s only because I’m a tough critic. I prefer American-made tools, and I’d like to see a slightly less bulky locking mechanism.

A: There is a lot to like about this tool:

• Boot-up time is good, not lightning fast, but decent. Note, boot-time is slightly faster than previous generation TS5000.

• Tool navigation is a breeze. Finding what function I want to use is easy and fast.

• The Bluetooth connection has good range and stays connected when walking around and away from the vehicle; it is a real game changer.

• Having a maintenance reset quick feature will make this tool a go-to for a lot of basic resets on oil changes, crank relearns, and other in-bay tests and calibrations.

• The TS7000 has a clean, crisp graphing feature that doesn’t appear to miss anything.

• The user can email the scan results from the tool to the service writer with just a few clicks.

Q: Are there any ways you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: A wireless charging dock would round this tool out nicely. I can see this tool being a high-use tool and having to fiddle with plugging in the USB-C connector every time can be a hassle and cause charge port failures. A replaceable screen protector would increase tool durability and ultimately tool life. Additionally, when viewing enhanced scan tool data, it would be nice to be able to globally graph all PIDs requested instead of having to select each one.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: TPMS testing to locate, replace, and program faulty sensors on various vehicles.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I have had a TPMS tool of some variation since about 2008. The Foxwell tool screams quality. During my twoweek evaluation, I didn’t find any holes in TPMS coverage, and the TS7000 has impressively enhanced scan tool capabilities.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I would rate this a 9.9. Easily the best TPMS tool I have used to date. Concerns about Android 9 reliability in the future are the only thing holding this tool back from being a 10.

Quality first

Technician Chris Enright looks for three things in every toolbox: quality, service, and affordability. His EPIQ Series tool cart from Snap-on offers all three.

Chris Enright, owner of Enright Automotive in Alexandria, Ohio, has been an automotive technician for 15 years and has owned his own shop since 2020. As the sole employee at his shop, Enright runs the show from every angle, and he likes it that way. That sense of freedom and control is part of what led him to open his own repair shop.

From his time in the automotive industry, Enright has learned a thing or two about tool storage — trying out different sizes and setups —and has landed on a setup that works well for his everyday use.

THE STAR OF THE SHOW

Enright uses many tool carts and boxes for storage at his shop. There’s his biggest box, the KRL 1163 Master Series from Snap-on, the 95th Anniversary edition; a Mac Tools Macsimizer Tool Cart; and the KRSC46 Roll Cart from Snap-on. Still, in Enright’s eyes, none stand a chance against his Snap-on EPIQ Series Mobile Workcenter.

For about 80 percent of his work, Enright uses his EPIQ Series tool cart which he’s had for around seven years. At 37” wide, 30” deep, and 42” tall, the cart fits his tools well with five drawers to work with. Even after testing out several different toolboxes, some smaller and more compact, Enright continued coming back to the EPIQ series.

“You get all the additional storage space in it,” says Enright. “The EPIQ series is a very well-built toolbox. For me, I was… so used to having everything set up in my cart that it was hard for me [to switch].”

In addition to its storage offerings, Enright finds the stainless-steel top on his EPIQ series tool cart invaluable to his work as a technician. The worktop allows him to work from anywhere in his shop, moving it as he goes without carrying all his tools from one place to another.

MAXIMIZING YOUR SPACE

Despite the cart’s many useful features, Enright favors his organization of the cart above all else. As a social media content creator, he has shared many parts of his technician life including the organization of his tools. Using modular organization systems from Toolbox Widget and Toolganizer, Enright feels he is able to utilize the space within each drawer of his tool cart more efficiently. Making more room for sockets, wrenches, extensions, and more.

“I was able to maximize every square inch of the cart throughout the entire orga-

nization series,” says Enright. “And that was my goal. We always assume that we need a bigger toolbox once we run out of space and my goal… was to show people we don’t always need something bigger.

GETTING THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

When it comes to buying a toolbox, there are many things to consider before making your purchase. Enright believes there are three things a technician should ask themselves when buying a toolbox or cart: is it made from quality materials, will I get good service from the company, and can I afford it?

Enright advises those in the market for a new setup to buy the toolbox in full, preferably in cash, instead of taking out payments on it. It was something he made sure he could do for the carts and boxes he uses in his own shop. Don’t dig a hole that you might not be able to get out of.

“I just started my shop, so I didn’t want to put the business under [financial] stress,” Enright explains.
