EMILY MARKHAM EDITOR Emily@ VehicleServicePros.com
How helping your community helps you too.
Small business owners are the backbone of every community. Each business not only helps the local economy but also makes that space unique, drawing in new community members. In this month’s Tales from the Road article (pg. 40), Cornwell Quality Tools distributor Eddie Neugebauer discusses his involvement with his community of Lawton, Oklahoma. Though Neugebauer has only been a distributor for around two and a half years, he’s made a big impact on those around him. Every year, the distributor runs a raffle on his truck where for every bike his customers donate, their name is entered for a chance to win a Cornwell tool cart. The bikes are then donated to local kids during the town’s holiday parade.
Neugebauer’s community involvement goes beyond giveaways, including feeding the homeless, organizing a parade for a young girl after she was struck by a stray bullet, and much more. I know some of you are probably thinking, ‘What Neugebauer is doing is amazing, but I would never have time to do that.’ And I get it, the 24 hours we’re given in a day constantly seems too short to accomplish everything we’ve set our minds to, but if you can find the time, getting involved in
your community is rewarding in more ways than you can imagine.
The simple act of volunteering your time can inspire others to do the same. Most people want to help, but they’re often stuck wondering how and feeling like they can’t make a difference. The way you volunteer doesn’t have to be world-shattering. Sponsoring a local kids' sports team or even offering to run the concession stand can make a big difference.
By putting yourself out there and helping your community, it’s also a great way to meet new people. Perhaps you’re at your local clothing drive helping sort clothes and you start chatting with someone who’s looking for a change in career and you just so happen to be looking for a new driver. This opportunity never would have presented itself if you weren’t out among your community.
Of course, volunteering can also help get your brand’s name out there and drum up some business, but that’s a miniscule portion of what this is about. Overall, it’s about supporting the community that supports you.
What are some ways you’re supporting your community? Or perhaps ways you’d like to? Send me an email or give me a call. I’d love to chat about how you’re making a difference.

Understanding when and how to sell your customers electric and air tools.
By Emily Markham, Editor
Atechnician’s toolbox is filled with a variety of tools and equipment. As years pass, some of those tools become obsolete. Currently, the automotive industry is seeing a trend where technicians and shops are buying more cordless electric tools than air tools. However, this trend doesn’t mean air tools are over.
Independent distributor Nick Smalley and his team of distributors are seeing this trend as well. Smalley and one of his drivers, Collin Kenehan, both note that when it comes to the sale of electric tools, they sell anywhere from a few daily to a few weekly, while their air tool sales are more often a few monthly. Electric tools and air tools each have their strengths and weaknesses, creating their own places in a shop. During PTEN ’s annual Aftermarket Profile Survey (featured in our April issue), we asked shop owners and technicians whether they prefer air tools or electric tools and if they’re replacing their air tools with
electric tools. In terms of preference between air tools and electric tools, the split was pretty even. About 50 percent said they prefer electric while the other 50 percent prefer air tools, or have no preference. As for replacing their air tools with electric tools, only 5 percent of technicians have replaced all of their air tools. Seventeen percent have not replaced any, and 77 percent have replaced some, but are keeping a mix between the two.
Every technician will have their own preferences about what tools they use and when. As Matt McKegney, North American Sales Manager for AIRCAT Pneumatic Tools, says, “It’s all based on the application.”
Though cordless electric tools are the current trend, your customers are still using and buying new air tools. This means understanding the differences between these tools and the applications they are best used for is important so that you can help your customers get the right tool for the job.
One key attribute of electric tools is their ability to be cordless. This grants technicians the ability to move around the shop freely and get into tight spaces more easily.
“Cordless is no longer just about convenience,” says Milwaukee Tool’s Group Manager of Product Marketing, Ryan Mack, “It’s about delivering greater productivity, safety, and freedom in the shop. For example, technology now being integrated into our High Torque Impact Wrench solutions can target torque range to prevent over torquing, ultimately reducing rework and improving safety.”
Other “smart” features offered in some electric tools include automatic
shut-off and performance tracking for precision, notes C.J. Fay, digital and brand senior marketing manager for SUNEX Tools.
Fay continues on to say that electric tools are best suited for light to medium duty tasks with precise torque control, providing versatility to the user. Additionally, because no equipment is required to use these tools, as they are either plug-and-play or batterypowered, it makes them simple to use.
When it comes to air tools, their ability to be continually used — no wait time for batteries to be recharged — makes them an ideal choice for high-volume tasks, notes Fay. These tools tend to excel in high-power, shop-based tasks such as heavy duty bolting. Air tools also often come into play during body shop repairs and are used for metal fabrication, bodywork, surface prep, and automotive painting to get a uniform application.
McKegney also sees much use of air tools for collision-based repairs.
“Right now, we still see the continuous running tools, which we call rotary tools, which are sanders, die grinders, those types of tools, [where] air still is preferred just because of the performance and the weight,”
McKegney says. “So, it all depends on the application … determining what the technician is going to use.”
Fay goes on to add that the adjustable power output technicians have via the air compressor settings allows for quite a bit of versatility from task to task. Lastly, he mentions that air tools tend to have greater durability due to having fewer moving parts. This helps to ensure a long lifespan in the potentially harsh conditions of an auto shop.
Every route and each stop along its way hosts a variety of unique customers with individual needs. Smalley and his team’s routes are located throughout Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. They stop at dealerships, independent shops, truck shops, body shops, and perhaps unsurprisingly, boat shops and individual farms. Each of those locations has different needs for tools and equipment.
Smalley notes that he visits many of the heavy duty shops and agricultural locations along his route, so the tools and equipment he carries are more heavy duty based. Shop type can also play a role in whether those technicians are interested in electric or air tools.
“Heavy duty shops seem to like air,” Kenehan says. “[Technicians] need 1” anvils, 3/4”, and there’s not an electric air hammer yet. So, air hammers are a great tool to have [in those shops.]”
Smalley and his team keep multiple electric and air tool brands on their trucks to suit all their customers’ needs. For electric, they’ve got Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita, and for air tools, they have AIRCAT, Ingersoll Rand, Astro, and Mityvac. If there’s a brand or a tool they don’t have, they’ll work with the customers to get them what they need.
Often, when customers approach them about buying an electric or air tool, the customer has already done the research.
“Most guys will come on the truck, and they’ll say, ‘Hey Nick, do you have that? Do you have that Astro THOR air hammer? We read online that that’s the closest comparison to [this other] air hammer,’ Smalley explains. “When it comes to air tools, guys come on the truck, knowing what they want, usually down to the specific model number.”
Electric tools aren’t very different, especially when it comes to the Milwaukee Tool products.
“The Milwaukee stuff just sells itself because it’s everywhere,” Smalley says. “The information is everywhere; the hype is everywhere. So again, guys know what they want. It’s kind of an easy sell for us, because we don’t have to explain what it is.”
Understanding the differences in each of your stops and the needs of each individual customer will help you know which brands to stock, when to step in with additional information to aid your customer’s research, and what tool and equipment needs they’ll have.
Though many customers do their own research before an electric or air tool
purchase, for those that don’t, you’ll want to run down your list of questions to help them find what they need.
Fay recommends asking these questions:
• Who’s buying — the shop or the tech?
• Do they like technology? Or simplicity?
• What level of technician are they?
• How do they treat their tools?
• What do they work on most often?
• What is their budget?
• What are their previous spending habits?
• What other tools/brands do they own?
• What is the shop environment like?
As you’re asking your customer these questions, be sure to break down each topic to look at it from every angle to ensure you’re getting all the information you need.
The set-up of your customer’s shop can play a large role in determining whether an electric or air tool is best for them. If the shop is small and mobility is already limited, a cordless electric tool might be best. Additionally, if the shop doesn’t have an air compressor, then purchasing an air tool wouldn’t make sense.
However, it’s likely that most shops you visit won’t lack an air compressor. McKegney notes that as long as there’s air in the vehicle’s tires, then there will be air in the shop. If your customer needs an air tool, Fay notes that another consideration would be whether they have the hose length they need to complete the job. If your customer’s shop doesn’t have the right equipment to complement the tool, then the purchase becomes irrelevant.
Safety is a major concern in every shop. When it comes to electric and air tools, each poses its own concerns.
For instance, with air tools, Milwaukee’s Mack notes that the air hose could be a tripping hazard for those in the shop. However, this hazard can be lessened if the shop uses hose reels that are attached to the ceiling, McKegney says.
As for electric tools, the lithiumion battery can pose a threat.
“The biggest concern we’re hearing now is the insurance companies are wanting to know how these shop owners are storing the equipment using lithium batteries because of possible fire hazard,” McKegney says. “And I’m not talking just electric vehicles, anything that uses a lithium battery.”
Again, the hazard for this can be

Between electric and air tools, there are a few equipment specifications you should discuss with your customers. Fay suggests these specifications.
Electric tools:
• Torque (ft-lb)
• Tool weight
• Voltage (18V/20V)
• Battery platform compatibility
• RPM
• Amp-hour Air tools:
• Torque (ft-lb)
• Tool weight
• Compressor CFM/PSI compatibility
Making the sale isn’t always easy, but with the tips below, you could find a new angle to sell your customers electric and air tools.
1. Trial run products
Technicians tend to be tactile people; they want to be able to hold a tool in their hands and see for themselves how it works.
“A one-week trial can be a gamechanger,” Mack says. “It helps users see how cordless tools fit into their workflow — not just for one task, but across their entire day, week, and year. And for distributors, selling into a system like M12 or M18 opens the door to a broader range of solutions — from polishers and inflators to lights and vacuums — all powered by the same battery.”
This same tactic can be used for air tools as well. If a customer is using one type of tool over the other, they may not have given that other tool a chance. Letting them try out the tool could surprise and land you a sale.
2. Create a connection
Finding a way to connect with your
customers will help them see you as more than just a salesperson.
“It’s easy to talk to these people, [but] you have got to be a little understanding that everybody’s got a different personality,” Kenehan says. “You learn that as time goes on, you can figure out a way to make them laugh, make it about them. If you see a picture on their toolbox of their children or a car or something, ask them about it. Try to make it about them, rather than yourself. Just spark conversation. And that seems to get people thinking like, ‘Oh, maybe I will stop on the truck, see what he’s got to offer.’”
3. Listen
Smalley and his team are all relatively new to the tool-selling industry. However, the distributor’s key to finding success and expanding his team to six additional drivers in only about two and a half years comes from one simple thing — listening.
Starting out working for one of the flags, Smalley quickly reached the No. 1 position in the state of Wisconsin in just seven months. He felt he had tapped out his selling area – there were no other shops or businesses for him to visit, and word of mouth had requests for him to visit other towns. At that point, in order for him to expand, he decided to become an independent.
“One of the biggest pieces of advice I’ve learned selling tools to customers is more about listening to the customer than anything,” Smalley says. “Customers know what they want. They might not just be able to always explain it in the right way, but I’d say 80 percent of this job is just listening. They know what they’re working on every day. They know what they need. They know what they borrowed from another technician. I just learned you got to sometimes sit back. I always let the customer talk first.”
allowing you to continue coverage for a good portion of your finance term. On a used vehicle, those warranties are transferrable as the vehicle is sold. If considering a used vehicle, ask about any potential warranty coverages that may be passed along.
Most used trucks are sold “as-is” beyond any warranties provided from the OEM. Even with low mileage, a used truck can have hidden issues. For some peace of mind, there are some third-party warranties available. Coverage from these third-party options are generally a bit more limited than from the OEM, however.
If you are a tool distributor who logs hundreds of miles each week on your route, you want to ensure your truck can be repaired quickly and avoid additional out-of-pocket costs. However, it’s not just about cost — it’s about keeping your route moving without interruption.
Tool trucks aren’t like other commercial vehicles. They need to be purpose-built for how you sell tools, and that varies by person, product, customer base, and region.
When you buy new, you have full control — from the layout of display shelving to power systems, storage drawers, lighting, and even how your logo and brand colors are integrated. Want extra battery backup? A custom slide-out display? A larger workstation? These are some of the many considerations and options when designing a new truck. Options for customization are almost endless, to some, this can be overwhelming and deter them from even starting the process of designing a new truck.
Pre-owned trucks, by contrast, were built for someone else’s route and preferences. The decisions have been made and the truck is ready
to go. That said, the layout may not match your inventory, and trying to retrofit or upgrade can be time-consuming and costly. Some builders, like LDV, offer interior upfits that provide flexibility when it comes to shelving and merchandising displays. This flexibility provides a nice balance between the up-front cost of a new truck and providing options for laying out a truck for your particular situation if purchasing used. Additionally, buying from an upfitter may allow for some additional customizations. Adding some shelving, reconfiguring the workspace, or updating the lighting are all options that could be integrated into a used vehicle by the right builder.
Buy new if:
• You want a truck designed around your specific tool lineup and sales habits.
• You plan to stay in the business for the long run.
• You value the appearance of a clean, branded truck to impress customers and build credibility.
Buy used if:
• You’re just starting out and want to minimize your upfront risk.
• You’ve found a used truck that closely matches your needs.
There's no one-size-fits-all approach to tool trucks, you have to find the right layout for your product offerings.
• You’ve found a used truck from a reputable builder who has performed inspections and repairs.
At the end of the day, your truck is your business. Whether you buy new or used, the decision should align with your budget, your brand, and your long-term goals.
Used trucks can be a smart entry point — if you go in with your eyes open. Ensure you have done your diligence on a used truck — buying from a reputable seller who has performed extensive inspections and repairs — to minimize any surprises. If you’re looking for a tool truck that supports your exact sales style, comes with full warranties, and you plan to hold the truck for many years, investing in a new custom-built tool truck might pay off many times over. LDV’s website, LDVusa.com, is a great place to start your research and compare new vs. used. Our site also has currently available pre-owned trucks listed for sale so you can get an idea of what trucks are selling for when making your decision.
Before you decide, talk to other distributors, consult your flag’s fleet team, and run the numbers. This isn’t just about buying a truck — it’s about building your mobile storefront for years to come.
Mac
Tools distributor Doug Mansell is rocking a new truck, outfitted with all the essentials from additional storage to a microwave and mini fridge.
By Elli Carder, Assistant Editor
The art of selling tools is in Pennsylvania-based Mac Tools distributor Doug Mansell’s DNA. Over 25 years ago, Mansell’s father launched his career with Mac, inspiring his son to follow in his footsteps.
Now, with over 12 years of experience under his belt, Mansell has stepped onto a new 2024 International MV, ready to show up and show out for his customers.
Mansell picked up his new truck in March after working with Herr Display Vans. While there weren’t many things he wanted to change from the previous truck, there were still a few new details added to update his new ride.
“There’s more shelf space,” Mansell explains. “Moved a couple things around and I went from the black interior back to the white and a natural look.”
We had a chance to speak with Mansell at the 2025 Mac Tools Tool Fair and get an up-close look at all the unique features of his truck’s layout and build. On the outside, the truck boasts a newer body style from his previous truck, with LED headlights for increased visibility and billboard lights on both sides that illuminate his name and number.
“If I show up to a stop early in the morning, I can turn them on and just let everyone know I’m here,” Mansell says. “I added the lights underneath because everyone’s got a little kid inside of them, so why not?”
When customers step inside, they can help themselves up by using the wrench shaped handrail Mansell had installed, a piece brought over from his previous truck. If they look up, they’ll see a variety of beef jerky snacks to choose from as they peruse. Above the rail are two rows of plier holders and two rows of pry bar holders.
“Tim Herr suggested I move my pry bar holder to the front instead of the back,” Mansell explains. “[Pliers] can be as tall as they want, and I can display them now.”
Further into the truck at shoulder height is his cordless tool display. Mansell can keep these products out of the box, allowing customers to interact more closely with the tools. Beneath this is an opening where additional products or toolboxes can be stored. Another toolbox opening sits across
the aisle. Additionally, Mansell felt an extra row of pullout shelves was a necessary addition to his truck.
“It’s just super handy, you can store a lot more stuff in a smaller space,” Mansell notes.
The extra storage spaces help keep the truck organized, and staying organized is key to keeping things operating smoothly. Mansell tries to keep everything in its proper place while also making sure customers are still engaged with his offerings.
“My pullout shelves are organized [by] different groups, but on the shelves [it’s] just whatever fits there,” Mansell says. “I put the new stuff out on shelves that people look at more often.”
If wall space ever runs out, Mansell’s got two additional pullouts that allow a flat space for velcroing tools.
One of Mansell’s favorite parts of the truck is nestled up in the front beside his workspace: six pullout drawers outfitted with low profile magnets for socket storage, additional drawers for odds and ends or small tool accessories, and a mini fridge.
Mansell is deaf out of his left ear, so his workspace has been situated and organized to accommodate him. His desk sits on the passenger side with his computer facing the back of the truck and his planner and catalog sitting right beside. Across from his workspace, Mansell keeps a microwave to heat up his lunch so he doesn’t have to “borrow” one from a customer along his route.
Perhaps the best part of all, hung up above his workspace is a plaque that reads: “Mansell Tools: Be more like Pap.”
“That’s for my Pap,” Mansell shares with us, pointing at the sign. “I told him I was getting a new truck, and he never got to see it. Love you, Pap.”
Top Left- LED lights on the top and sides of Mansell's truck help announce his presence at early morning or evening stops. Top RightDetails from Mansell's previous truck moved over to the new one, like his oversized wrench handrail. Bottom Left- Mansell has made his workspace accommodate his needs, with space to work and help customers. Bottom Right- Mansell takes advantage of every inch of space to display his inventory.
Don’t let a technician’s experience intimidate you; instead, use that experience to your advantage.
By Brian Fahlgren, Contributing Editor
In the mobile tool truck world, selling tools to people who are in the beginning stages of their careers is pretty straightforward. I’d always suggest to a newer technician that it’s best to ask the senior technician’s advice on which tool purchases should have priority over others. It’s this senior or experienced technician that some distributors have difficulty helping with new tools and technology. Even for distributors who were experienced technicians before their career change, tools and technologies change so quickly that it’s still a challenge to stay informed on the latest innovations.
I recall in my first years as a tool dealer selling scan tools that came in two large plastic cases. The first case, of course, would house the scan tool, and the second case housed all the different OBD-I cables. Now, there are decent, basic apps available on our phones that replace pretty much everything that came in those two cases. Staying up to date on these shifts in tools and technology can be hard to manage on your own, but utilizing your customers’ experience can help.
There is typically one of two mindsets held by the majority of experienced technicians. The first is “I learned the hard way, and I’m keeping my
knowledge to myself.” The second and more common mindset is more open to helping others become better in their trade. They may not provide a direct answer to a question, but instead advise on the steps involved to reach their own successful conclusion. The technicians who fit the second profile were the ones I used as my “go-to” whenever a new item arrived in the market or I needed specific technology advice. Many times, by using the experienced technicians as advisors, they would also see the need to purchase the tool themselves to enhance their own skill set.
One of my best examples of asking for assistance from an experienced technician happened when the Curien N2 was released onto the market. The N2 is a dual-channel Bluetooth graphing multimeter. It also has the ability (among other things) to perform a parasitic battery draw test. I had a customer at a tiny GM dealership who I’d often go to for electronic diagnostic advice. Early in his career, he went back to college and obtained an electrical engineering degree. His first question every week was “What’s new?”
He sincerely wanted to know what new items were out there to make him more prolific and profitable. He was
at the top of my list of technicians I wanted to show this new meter to.
One thing I learned early on is you have to be willing sometimes to allow for “Try before you buy.” Along with that comes the understanding that the tool might be returned to you next week. Either way, you have to appreciate the review your customer gives you in their honest feedback.
I left the Curien for my customer to try out. He had a new Suburban with a battery draw that showed up the next day. Even with the assistance of the GM engineers, they weren’t able to solve the issue. My customer pulled out the N2 device I had left to see if it might indeed find the draw. With the help of the tech line from Curien, he was able to find and resolve the parasitic draw. It just so happened that in this case, the tool sold itself. When I arrived the next week, he had already bought a tablet specifically to use with what became his latest tool purchase. On top of making the sale, I gained additional knowledge on how to better present this meter to my other customers.
Just because a customer has been in the trade for years doesn’t mean they no longer have the need for new tools. Aside from the need to replace worn-out tools, there will always be new automotive designs that require
specialized service tools. Most of your customers have entered the field because they love the analytical thinking required, along with working with their hands. Fortunately, most of them also just like buying new tools. It’s not uncommon to have the experienced technician, even nearing retirement, outspend the newbies.
These are the people who have mastered their trade and usually have a higher income without the stress of providing for a growing young family. I had a lifelong Toyota technician
purchase a new triple bay roll cabinet as a retirement gift for himself. He still had the original Snap-on set he purchased 30 years prior from when he first started as a technician. He used that as his trade-in. His only request was that I deliver the box to his home, which I was more than happy to do.
Don’t let their technical experience intimidate you. If you view the experienced technician as yet another source for greater tool knowledge, you’ll not only increase sales, but you’ll also build a stronger relationship with a
segment of the industry that most distributors struggle with.
BRIAN FAHLGREN started in the tool business in 1998. Falhgren has been an employee dealer, franchised dealer, and district manager for two different flags. In 2018, he returned to the driver’s seat of his own tool truck. Providing premium service and his continuous “close to perfect” attitude, he achieved his goal of being a Top 10 dealer for Cornwell Quality Tools. He and his wife of over 44 years recently retired, moving from Oregon to the endless summers of Beverly Hills, Florida.

This distributor knew nothing about the automotive industry when he started, but he’s now built up a loyal customer base that’s as charitable as he is.
By Griffin Matis, Associate Editor
Cornwell Quality Tools distributor Eddie Neugebauer mainly sees independent shops on his route in Lawton, Oklahoma, although he also visits a couple of dealerships along the way. When he originally stepped away from his previous venture in the cannabis industry a few years ago, he wasn’t sure what was next for him. He’d built a thriving business from the ground up, but found himself starting over without the capital to launch a new one in the same industry. He called his brother, a Cornwell dealer, who had a simple response: “It’s all good man, just buy a tool truck.”
What's your story?
Share the ups and downs of life on the road with us at Editor@VehicleServicePros.com and you could be featured in our next Tales from the Road column.
Despite not having any experience as a technician or in the automotive industry, Neugebauer took the advice and made his start as a tool distributor. He was honest with every one of his customers about his lack of experience, but as most distributors would probably agree, you learn quickly in this industry.
“My biggest struggle was obviously not knowing what any of this stuff was. I’ve never turned a wrench in my life. All of this was completely foreign to me, so just figuring out what I needed to sell these guys... They’d say, ‘I need a tool that does this,’ and I’d go, ‘Huh, hold on, let me phone a friend.’ My first few months, I was constantly on the phone with my brother and other dealers.”
While his tool knowledge was still being developed, Neugebauer’s salesmanship and customer service skills were as sharp as ever and translated across industries.
“I dealt with business owners in the cannabis industry, so I’m very comfortable going in and talking to owners,” he says. “I’ve always had good relationships with my shop owners.”
The years Neugebauer spent developing and expanding brands gave him a significant advantage as a distributor, and it’s also why he’s proud to be under Cornwell Quality Tools’ flag.
“Having a franchise is a little different [than running a company],” he says. “Most people who come into this have no idea what it takes to successfully build a brand. And having someone like Cornwell, who’s been around since 1919, I didn’t have to worry about that coming into this. That helped a lot.”
Even though he’s only been a distributor for around two and a half years, Neugebauer has made some pretty big waves. Switching industries didn’t change the fact that, at the end of the day, it’s all about the people you serve. Each year, the distributor runs a raffle for his customers, offering up the chance to win a new Cornwell tool cart as a prize with every bike donated.
“I try to be as active in my community as possible,” he says. “For the last two years — this will be year three — we’ve done a bike giveaway at our Christmas parade here in town. The first year, I gave away 33 bikes. Last year, we gave away 88 bikes. It’s made a huge difference.”
Neugebauer’s community involvement isn’t limited to holiday giveaways, either. He’s sponsored multiple events and prizes for local organizations, organized a 150-person parade for a young girl after she was struck by a stray bullet, and gathered customers and their families to give away hundreds of plates of food to homeless people.
The impact isn’t just felt by the members of the community receiving the support, but these sorts of
charitable efforts transform the lives of the people pulled in to help out. Neugebauer fondly remembers having one of his customers, a seemingly gruff technician that always exchanged friendly insults with him on every visit, help serve food for dozens and excitedly ask the distributor when they could do it all over again. Another one of his customers bought a new bike every paycheck for Neugebauer to give away.
“I see [my customers] daily,” he says. “Being the tool guy is way more than just selling tools—I’m their bartender, their therapist. I might be the only person they feel comfortable talking to. They know I’m not going to judge them. It’s so much more than just selling tools. So I give them opportunities by saying, ‘Hey man, we’re feeding the homeless this weekend. Come on.’”
While there are direct business-related benefits to community engagement, it’s ultimately about supporting the community that supports you.
“People ask me all the time if what I spend on these things gets me more
customers, and yeah, ultimately it does,” Neugebauer says. “I come from a very different industry, and I bring a certain look and vibe. Some people see me for what I was doing before this and don’t take me seriously. They might not give me time. When they see or hear about what I do in the community, those people who wouldn’t deal with me before will talk with me now and say, ‘Oh, you’re actually a decent dude.’
"You choose your distributor based on who they are. It doesn’t matter if it’s Mac, Matco, Cornwell, Snap-on, none of that matters. The person behind the wheel of the truck matters.”
Part of building a successful business is planning for the future, and
Neugebauer’s plans are to keep building on everything he’s built so far. “I recently expanded and bought myself a 24’ truck. I inherited my brother’s hand-me-downs, so to speak, but I’m looking forward to expanding inventory and continuing to grow,” he says. “We’ve got new forms of tool storage coming out. I’ve got this fancy 79” Arca on my truck right now with the industry’s largest power drawer in it, all outfitted with Mantis Tool Grid, it’s awesome.”
Of course, he’s also got extensive plans for ramping up his community involvement as well. He and his brother are aiming to give away 200 bikes to children this year, and given how charitable their customers are, they’ll have to aim even higher next year.
Distributors share tips on how to handle difficult customers.
By the Professional Distributor Editors
When you work in tool distribution , you’re bound to run into a variety of customers. Ideally, every interaction will be a positive one, but it’s impossible to make everyone happy. We asked distributors to share how they handle the unhappy customers, and here’s what they had to say:
1Handle it in stride
“I’m pretty blunt and quick-witted. I don’t have a lot of tolerance for bullcrap. You mix all that together, it all works out. Don’t take it too serious, and don’t let it get to you [if] it’s not hurting you. When [they] get off the
truck, everyone laughs about it and moves on.”
-Doug Mansell, Mac Tools
2 Trust and respect
“If you take care of people, they’re going to take care of you. In the years I’ve been a dealer, I’ve taken care of all sorts of issues. If they trust you, you can’t do enough for them. I try to take care of people and treat them way I want to be treated.”

3 Kill ‘em with kindness
“First and foremost, you don’t ever argue back with them. You just
listen to their concern and address it in the way that you need to — no matter what the situation is. Myself and all [my drivers] know you just take care of the customers. Doesn't matter if we lose money on the deal. It doesn’t matter. At that point, when you have an upset customer, you just do whatever it takes to make it right. You kill them with kindness.”

Try to understand your customer’s situation
“If I go into a shop and somebody has a bill with me, and they’re kind of avoidant, then I talk to the service manager. I try to get advice from them, like, ‘Hey, is this guy quitting soon? Are you guys letting him go soon? When’s payday?’ I try and get my ducks in a row. I don’t ever like to leave somebody struggling, but I also have to, as the lender to these guys, I have to keep everything moving in the truck. I have signs posted in my truck about missed payments, or not paying me, or not communicating with me. I’m a pretty reasonable person. All you have to do is reply to a text.”

5 Customer service can’t be wrong
“Customers are always right, even if they’re not. If you ever say ‘No, I can’t,’ or anything other than ‘Let me check and get back to you’ to them, [it could end badly]...it’s an industry-known fact that you don’t say anything negative to a customer — that’s wrong. Just tell them that you’re learning, and then you’re asking for their help. If you make that customer feel like he’s the most important person, you’ll get to know him and he’ll get to know what you’re about.”
