IA decade of data

Looking back at ten years of statistics from our Aftermarket Profile study.

t’s hard to believe that it’s already been 10 years since PTEN published its first Aftermarket Profile. For those who don’t know what that is, head over to page 16. There you’ll find the results of our yearly purchasing study. We gathered data from shop owners and technicians across the country, asking questions about the types of repairs and services you perform, the tools and equipment you own, your current and future purchasing plans, and much more.

In honor of the Aftermarket Profile’s tenth anniversary, I’d like to take a look back and see how much this industry has grown.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Perhaps unsurprisingly, hand tools have remained the number one tool purchase over the past ten years. Along with hand tools, specialty tools, electrical tools, and chemicals have also remained consistent. Until 2020, diagnostic tools also held a position in the top five categories of tools and equipment being purchased, then cordless power tools took their place.

Though the cordless power tools jumped up to the top five, air tools have not been forgotten. Over the past five years, when we’ve asked the question, “Do you prefer air tools or cordless tools,” the responses have remained pretty similar — about 20 percent prefer air tools, 50 percent prefer cordless tools, and 30 percent have no preference. If you want to learn more about the future of air tools, check out our inaugural Toolbox Topics video with AIRCAT Pneumatic (VehicleServicePros.com/55267312).

TECHNOLOGY

The automotive industry has seen quite the technology boom over the past ten years. It’s almost funny looking back to 2016 and seeing the low percentage of technicians that have had to use a tool that requires a smart device — only 23 percent — and compare it to this year’s stat of 64 percent.

We’ve also watched the rise of start/ stop technology — in 2016, 51 percent of shops had never seen it and now, 22 percent of shops see it daily. Similarly, in 2016, only 30 percent of shops owned a smart battery charger. Fast forward to 2025 and 59 percent of shops own one.

Additionally, as the technology has changed, so has the industry’s training needs. Though electrical/electronic systems and engine performance/ driveability have remained in the top three categories noted as “the biggest training opportunities,” hybrid/electric vehicles and ADAS have also been major contenders.

I could go on about all these stats for a while, so if you want to chat more about the changes we’ve seen in the industry over the years, shoot me a message!

Streamlight Nano Light II

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: It saved me from having to find a different light for the task at hand.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Streamlight Nano Light II is an ultra-compact LED keychain flashlight that provides steady, bright light for one hour of run-time using a single AAAA alkaline battery. It fits easily onto a keychain or zipper pull. Measuring 2.2” in length, the light weighs 0.6 oz. and is double the brightness of its predecessor, the Nano Light. The light is constructed of machined aircraft-grade aluminum with an anodized black finish. Its white LED has a 50,000-hour lifetime. The light is waterproof and has a non-rotating snap hook for onehanded operation with an easy twist of the rotating on/off head switch. Its LED provides 20 lm, 120 candela, and a beam distance of 22m.

For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55243261

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: It saved me time in some cases as the light was easily carried in my pocket.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: Zero setup. It included an AAAA battery and was good to go.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: Very easy.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: It came with a battery for the flashlight. The packaging was similar to bigger lights just much smaller.

Q: Was there a manual included?

A: No manual is included and is not needed.

Q: What features did you like?

A: It can connect to a keychain or be carried in your pocket to always have a light on hand.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: It’s perfect the way it is.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: Looking under the dash for fuse boxes and in an emergency breakdown situation while I was out of town. I was able to use it to illuminate the areas I needed.

Q: How does this tool compare to others you’ve used like it?

A: I have used small lamps like this in the past, but they were never as reliable and strong as this light. I have not had any failures. The battery life is excellent.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I would rate this little light as a 10 due to the ease of use and reliability. The light is bright and very handy, especially in small places.

MIKE

K-Tool International Super Strong Ratchet 1/2” Drive

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: The flex head allowed me to fit it into areas without having to try to use swivel sockets and the length made it possible to loosen extremely tight fasteners.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: It might take longer to see it but quality tools that don’t easily break always will increase shop profit.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: Open the box and you’re all set.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: Simple. Just like any other ratchet. The handle extension is very selfexplanatory and easy to use.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The K-Tool International Super Strong Ratchet 1/2” Drive, No. KTIXD3SSR, features an I-beam handle designed to handle loads up to 700 ft-lbs of torque. The I-beam will flex under extreme use without breaking. The ratchet has 72 teeth and a 5-degree swing arc. Its head can flex +/- 15 degrees. The ratchet has an additional handle extension of 19.8”, making its overall length 44.3”. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55273377

A: It came in a cardboard box picturing what you’re going to find inside. The ratchet and handle are fitted in a foam holder that you can transfer right into your toolbox.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The flex head is just enough to help it work in some tighter areas. The 72-tooth gearing helps work in areas where the swing is a problem. The finish on the ratchet looks great and the foam storage tray has a little extra room where you can carve out spots for a few adapters.

Q: Is there any way could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: I think the only thing I might recommend would be to thread the extension handle so that the end plug from the ratchet handle has somewhere to go rather than risk being lost out of pocket. But then again, the extension handle should only be needed for a turn or two, and then it can be removed, and the end cap placed back into the ratchet handle. Perhaps I just overthink things too much.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: I used this for body/frame mounts on a 1970 K30 Chevy Pickup, the control arms on a 2014 GMC Terrain, and loos-

ening wheels on a school bus just to see how easy it was with and without the extension.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I have several brands of 1/2” ratchets. The one I have closest to this in length — I don’t know how many teeth the gears have — but it takes considerably more space to use, and I have broken the gear set under a lot less stress than I have already put the K-Tool through. This is hands down a better tool.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: A 10. The ratchet’s 72-tooth gears speed up work, especially in tighter areas. The extension handle makes loosening the most stubborn fasteners easier. The ratchet fits nicely in the hand and looks great.

Cone Washer Removal Adapter

NY.

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: It worked very well as compared to the traditional method, which requires swinging a large sledge hammer and then finishing the removal with pliers.

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: It’s been a positive with no risk of downtime from missed hammer strikes. With the old method, it’s possible to miss the target and damage threads on the studs of the hub.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: It’s very easy to use, just insert it into a quality air hammer.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: The packaging was appropriate as there’s not much there to protect. No accessories included, but none are required for use.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?

A: No manual was included, but operation is self-explanatory.

Q: What features did you like?

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The OTC Cone Washer Removal Adapter, No. 5098, is an air hammer attachment designed to break cone washers on floating axle dual rear wheel setups loose. The hollowcentered tool slides over the stud and makes direct contact with the cone washer. The adapter makes removing axle flange cone washers fast and easy without requiring chisels or improvised methods that could damage any parts.

For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55263763

A: The weight of the tool, it really helps with kinetic energy.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: Honestly, no, the simple design is perfect.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: I used this for a rear wheel seal replacement on a 2006 F-650.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: This tool works great, I’ve never used a similar tool or know of one.

Q: Is there anything you had questions or concerns about in regard to the tool?

A: No, it’s a simple design and just works.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I would give it the full 10. It works well even when the cones and hub have been painted over.

XTool Anyscan A30M

Reviewed by Matt Fanslow, diagnostic tech/shop manager at Riverside Automotive in Red Wing, Minnesota.

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: I feel the angle with these mobile device interfaces for functionality or desirability in a repair shop environment is that putting a scan tool in everyone’s hands, technicians and advisors alike, becomes much less cost-prohibitive.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: Choosing the mobile device, usually a cellular telephone, scanning a QR code from inside the box the A30M is packaged in, downloading and installing the appropriate app, plugging the

device into a Data Link Connector, allowing the app and device to find each other and marry, and after that, it’s really just like using most scan tools.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?

A: Not technically. The PDF can be easily accessed on the website or found with a QR code in the box.

Q: What features did you like?

A: Navigation is intuitive. There is a builtin voltmeter on the interface. Granted, depending on the vehicle and how the DLC is oriented, you may not actually be able to see the voltmeter. This could be solved with an extension cable, but having a voltmeter on the interface is a handy feature.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: I can’t say that I found any features actually unlikable. If you are really just asking for “downsides,” then it has to be mentioned that this tool does not replace the “flagship” XTool scan tools or the fullfeatured professional scan tools most of our shops have one or multiple of. For the cost, it isn’t all that reasonable for them to do so. This tool shines, like many of its competitors, in being able to put scan tools in everyone’s hands, namely for Health Reports and basic or initial diagnostic steps. On a few vehicles this tool was used on, and its competitors for comparison, there are tests, adaptions,

and controls that just are not available that are on the higher level tools.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: I used it, and had co-workers use it, for the purposes of some driveability diagnostics and Health Report scans.

Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? If so, what are some new features compared to the old version?

A: Not of the XTool. I have other similar Bluetooth interfaces for scan tools that I felt helped me assess the capability of the A30M.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: A nine. For what it is, it could be a good addition to a shop that has many employees where providing each a full-blown professional-level scan tool is cost-prohibitive. This could give uniformity in all the reports sent in. It won’t replace those professional tools, and I don’t say that with condescension toward this tool.

Hunter Engineering Ultimate ADAS

Q&A with Ryan Gerber, ADAS product specialist at Hunter Engineering.

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A: What’s innovative about Ultimate ADAS is the fact that we’ve had out on the market for years our Hawkeye Elite Aligner, and we’ve taken what worked well with our alignment system and expanded that to ADAS capabilities. Not only can you do all around the vehicle placements of fixtures for ADAS, but you can also complete a full-wheel alignment with the piece of equipment as well as address steering angle sensor resets.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: Hunter likes to innovate in the market space, and we always look for the problem. If there’s a problem, there has to be a solution. The problem was twofold: how do we execute the calibration and then how do you place the targets or fixtures for it? We found that the executive of the calibration was done with the scan tool, so we partnered with Bosch. I wouldn’t say that’s an easy solution by any stretch, but what was more difficult was to figure out the compound angles and distances and those types of things that need to be addressed when placing those fixtures. That’s also the bulk of the time required for an ADAS calibration, figuring out these distances and angles. What was the inspiration was to provide a solution to the market.

Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?

A: On a technician level, it’s nice because now it takes all that back-breaking labor and removes it. It makes it a lot easier for the technician to do. It makes it faster and easier for the general population as well. We think that the way that the system works all around the car, that’s really what’s changing the industry, is making it easier. It’s not as likely to be ignored or overlooked, now the customer can get a car returned to them so that they can have really good documentation included. The shop that provides this can now make a profit because they’re able to do this quickly and easily. The technician is going to want to do these things because they’re not as difficult for them to do. So, again, it’s just that circular help.

Q: What has the feedback been like from technicians that have purchased this tool?

A: So far, our feedback has been tremendous. We’ve been able to do some nice testimonials on YouTube. People are really happy. We even had one of our customers hug somebody. Hugs in the automotive field are few and far between, so when that happened, we knew we’d knocked it out of the park.

Growing the business and the toolbox

Technician Josh Moore boasts a 144” long Iron Giant, but it's still not done growing.

Technician Josh Moore runs his automotive shop out of Texas, a business he started with his father. When it comes to the Moore family, vehicle repair runs in their blood. Both Moore’s father and his grandfather worked as technicians, and Moore grew up surrounded by cars.

“My father is the reason why I’m doing what I’m doing today,” Moore says.

From that first solo job at 15, Moore has been working in the automotive industry for about 22 years. In that time, his shop has grown and so has his tool storage.

144” AND COUNTING

Currently, Moore houses all his tools in his Iron Giant from Cornwell. The box is about 144” long, and with the locker and power crib it boasts an additional 60”.

Josh Moore

Shop: Elite Equipment Solutions

Location: Shepherd, Texas

Before purchasing the Iron Giant, Moore had been loyal to a different brand when it came to tool storage, but his Cornwell dealer — who had always offered him great support — approached him with a proposition.

“He told me one day, ‘I’m going to sell you a toolbox,’ and I told him he wasn’t. Then he came up, we ran the numbers, and I chose to do it,” Moore says. “I’ve been super happy ever since.”

Product support is one of the most important factors Moore considers before making any kind of toolbox purchase. He counts himself lucky when it comes to getting the support he needs from his tool dealers.

ORGANIZING THE DRAWERS

Organizing a toolbox as big as Moore’s can seem daunting, but Moore has his system all figured out. Each category of tool has its own designated drawer. Electrical service tools, specialty, hand tools, sockets, you name it, it’s got a place in the Iron Giant.

Out of all the features of the toolbox, the hutch is Moore’s favorite part of the Iron Giant. His shop does a good bit of diagnostics, and the hutch comes in handy for storing all the diagnostic tools he needs.

As a way to minimize clutter, Moore tries to buy things in sets so that everything’s neatly placed in the drawer in its foam holder. This not only helps to keep the drawer clean, but it saves Moore time when he needs a certain tool.

“You can see what’s missing, if you need to replace something, if something is broken,” Moore explains. “It’s all got its own place. As soon as you open it up, you see it.”

ROOM TO GROW

Since the first day Moore opened his business, he’s been on a steady trajectory of growth. With around seven employees under his leadership, they’re able to work on pretty much everything that comes their way. To keep up with his growing business, Moore knows that he’ll need to increase his tool storage space.

Moore’s been rocking with his Iron Giant for around two years, and he knows just how he wants to expand it.

“We’re going to add another locker to it,” Moore shares. “Then on the top of the one that doesn’t have the hutch, we’re attempting to add another top box to that.”

Moore’s business continues to grow, and his toolbox keeps a steady pace.

The Iron Giant is impressively large, and it's still growing.
