HWorkplace burnout
Recognising burnout and how to fight back against it.
By Emily Markham, Editor Emily@VehicleServicePros.com
ow many of you have ever felt burned out by your job? Maybe your work-life balance is getting trounced by work, or perhaps you’re having issues with a coworker and only feel dread every time you step into the shop. Or maybe you’re wondering what the heck burnout even is?
According to the Mayo Clinic, burnout, specifically job-related burnout, is a type of stress linked to work. This can be caused by a number of factors, such as:
• Feeling either constantly overworked or under-challenged
• Being under time pressure all the time
• Having conflicts with colleagues
• Extreme commitment that results in you neglecting your own needs Any of this sound like you? If you’re all shaking your heads, I’m afraid I’ll need to call you on that bluff. I’ve spoken with too many of you over the years who’ve self-identified as workaholics and told me of the well over 40 hours you’re putting in each week. Now, that’s not to say I’m diagnosing all of you with burnout. Different people handle
stress in different ways, and that’s okay. Overall, I just want you to be aware of what burnout is, so you can take the proper steps to manage it if you ever feel this way.
If you nodded along with any of the factors listed above, ask yourself these questions.
• Are you feeling physically and/or emotionally exhausted?
• Are you feeling less interested or more frustrated with your job?
• Are you feeling listless, like it’s hard to concentrate, and are drained of creativity?
These are all symptoms of burnout, and while it would be nice to simply choose not to feel this way, that’s not how mental health works. If you break your leg, you can’t will it better. There are guidelines you have to follow to ensure it heals properly. The same is true for burnout. To fight back against burnout, you can try:
• Seeking support — Try reaching out to coworkers, friends, or loved ones for support. It can often feel like you’re alone when it comes to burnout, but talking with others about how you’re feeling can help you feel less alone.
• A relaxing activity or exercise —
Reduce your stress level by practicing meditation, doing yoga, or going for a walk. Whatever you choose to do, it should be something that you enjoy and that helps clear your mind.
• Looking at your options — Maybe it’s time to have a talk with your manager about your workload or hours, or perhaps you need to look into taking some time off. Things won’t change unless you work to change them. Try to keep an open mind while thinking about these options, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

The electrified future of automotive maintenance
Understanding what electrification means for vehicle service and your business.
By Scott Brown, Technical Editor
For over two decades, I’ve been involved with servicing hybrid vehicles, and as of today, we’re well into servicing EVs as well. Depending on your location, you may not have had much exposure to these vehicles, so your interest in this article may vary. I’m here to share some of my perspective on what electrification means for service and what impact it might have on your business.
BACKGROUND
Around 2004, my shop staff and I started attending classes covering hybrid vehicles. It was tough to find training on this subject since this new mode of propulsion was so new. Nevertheless, we started getting inquiries about performing services on Prius vehicles. Since we’re located in Southern California, the Prius was becoming extremely popular.
EVs are transforming how we think about transportation. However, this shift also brings new challenges and opportunities, especially with service and diagnostics. Some newer manufacturers have reinvented the vehicle platform by building the vehicle from the ground up, bypassing some of the traditional methods from the past. What I am referring to here is the way the end user
interacts with the vehicle. From entering the vehicle, starting the vehicle, and driving, many of these basic operations have been reimagined. If you’ve driven a Tesla, you know what I am referring to. (Figure 1)
THE EVOLUTION OF PROPULSION
For reference, EVs are not new. In fact, over 100 years ago, EVs were very prominent. From the 1890s to the 1910s, EVs were incredibly attractive to consumers. They were quieter, smoother, and easier to operate than their ICE rivals, no hand-cranking or complex gear-shifting
p Figure 1 — Tesla Cybertruck on full self-drive

required. EVs were especially popular in urban areas, where their limited range (30-50 miles) wasn’t a showstopper for short trips. By 1900, EVs accounted for about 38 percent of the U.S. car market, outpacing gasoline and steam cars. Their dominance manifested from practical advantages: electricity had high availability in cities, and EVs appealed to upscale buyers, who valued the clean, low-friction experience. Companies like Baker Electric and Detroit Electric thrived, producing models that could hit speeds of 20-30 mph. (Figure 2)
But that dominance didn’t last. Battery tech was plagued with problems; leadacid batteries were heavy, expensive, and slow to charge. Demand for longer ranges increased, and gasoline cars got cheaper and more reliable thanks to innovations like Ford’s Model T and its assembly line. By the 1920s, EVs couldn’t compete on price, and their appeal dwindled with an ever-increasing presence of gas stations popping up everywhere. And with the introduction of one of the most groundbreaking innovations, the electric starter, this made the gasoline vehicle more appealing than ever!
EVs faded to a niche by the 1930s, but their early lead showed what was possible when tech and demand aligned. It just took a century for batteries and infrastructure to catch back up. Over the course of the century, internal combustion engines have dominated the automotive market. Service and repair mechanics and technicians have focused their skills on and around ignition, fuel, emissions, drivetrain, and electrical systems. Now, for EVs, they represent a significant technology shift in some of these systems. Instead of gasoline, they rely on electric motors to not only produce propulsion, but also support the refrigeration system, highvoltage batteries, and sophisticated software. This alternative propulsion system isn’t just a simple transition from the old formula, it’s an entirely new landscape. And with it comes a pressing need for specialized service and diagnostics tailored to the unique anatomy of EVs. (Figure 3)
WHY EV SERVICE MATTERS
Unlike traditional vehicles, EVs have fewer moving parts, which can mean less wear and tear on components like brakes or transmissions. However, this doesn’t make them maintenance-
Figure 2 — Baker Electric vehicle
Figure 3 — Mega beam with a 1000V-rated A/C compressor - 2024 Cybertruck
free. The heart of an EV is its battery pack. It requires careful monitoring to ensure longevity and performance. High-voltage systems, thermal management, and regenerative braking add layers of complexity that demand expertise beyond the scope of a typical mechanic’s garage. Additionally, EVs are 30-40 percent heavier than their ICE counterparts. Couple that with the instant torque being applied to the tires and suspension systems during acceleration and regeneration, and expect to see more frequent tire service, alignment, and suspension service. (Figure 4)
Charging infrastructure is another critical piece of the puzzle. As more drivers adopt EVs, service centers must be equipped to troubleshoot issues with onboard chargers, cables, and
compatibility with public and private charging stations. I have personally performed service calls for difficulties with charging. Scan tools and some specialized equipment may be needed to address and identify trouble. Poor connections, hardware failures, and other faults can easily present a frustrating experience, making trained technicians invaluable.
Moreover, EVs are rolling computers. Over-the-air software updates can enhance performance or fix bugs, but when something goes wrong, it’s not always a wrench that’s needed; diagnostic tools and a deep understanding of system operation and data interpretation will be the assets needed to address issues efficiently. Technicians are a powerful breed, and those who con -
tinue to adapt will see success within the automotive service industry.
DIAGNOSTICS: THE KEY TO EV LONGEVITY
Diagnostics for EVs go far beyond what’s being shown to the consumer through the info display systems. Advanced tools are now essential to monitor battery health, assess motor efficiency, and pinpoint issues in real time. For instance, a technician might use onboard diagnostics or a thirdparty application to evaluate the state of health (SoH) of a battery pack. One of the common tests is electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) testing, which is a non-destructive method used to assess the health of battery storage systems. It involves applying a small
alternating current (AC) signal across a range of frequencies to the battery during charging and measuring the resulting voltage response to find its impedance. EIS measures the battery’s impedance, which reflects internal resistance, charge transfer, and diffusion processes, providing insights into battery degradation.
I was recently involved with performing battery health assessments through a company called ReJoule, located here in Southern California. They are an engineering firm working on several initiatives around battery health, including the repurposing of vehicle traction batteries into stationary power backup. Their processes were quite intriguing, and while I was able to work closely with their engineers, I
learned quite a bit about this subject, however, I still have so much more to learn. Nevertheless, through the dozens of 24-hour HV DC charge cycles on multiple vehicles, a model was created, and this has led to a method for
Evolving with the industry
Icameto work for Connie & Dick’s Service Center Inc. located in Claremont, California, in 1990. Prior to that I was working in an independent shop and one of our parts vendors had an outside salesman who contacted me one day and said that Connie (Conrad) and Dick (Richard) wanted to retire, and they asked if I’d be interested in coming to work for them and purchasing their business. After several meetings, I decided to make a move and started work in September of that year. The shop was huge, but I soon noticed that even though it was 1990, there were no computers, minimal service information, and in the entire shop space, one above-ground lift could be found. The 13,000’ facility was ripe for improvement.
Sometime around 1992, I introduced a computer, and one of the existing owners wasn’t too pleased. Think about it, this was highly disruptive to the norm these folks had grown accustomed to over the past 30 years. By 1996, I had bought out both partners, and they retired. I had also made a

In addition to this type of testing, data logs can help reveal patterns that
deal with them on the real estate because I had big plans for the shop, so it would be able to thrive well into the future. Fast forward to today, and within our business, we are a highly capable and professional automotive service provider. Today, Conrad, at 94, is still active and visits the shop regularly. And he, too, realized a few years ago that he could no longer resist technology and purchased a new Tesla. Currently, we are growing our Tesla business, and he continues to learn more about the vehicle and its awesome technology.

might predict future failures. Equipped with the right equipment and security access, a technician in the aftermarket can view high-resolution historic data to gain more insights on not only battery performance, but also other vehicle performance metrics.
One exciting development is the rise of predictive diagnostics. By leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning, service providers can analyze data from thousands of EVs to anticipate problems before they occur. Imagine a dashboard alert warning a driver of a degrading battery cell weeks before it fails, or a service center proactively

scheduling maintenance based on usage patterns. This isn’t science fiction — it’s the future of EV care, and it’s already here.
TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION
The shift to alternative propulsion doesn’t just require new tools — it demands a new workforce. Automotive schools and certification programs are racing to update curricula, teaching technicians how to safely handle high-voltage systems and interpret diagnostic readouts. Organizations like the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) now offer EV-specific certifications, ensuring that service professionals are equipped for the electric age.
Let’s not forget about safety, this is a top priority. Working on an EV’s high-voltage components without proper training can be deadly, which is why specialized knowledge isn’t an option. From insulating gloves to lockout-tagout procedures, EV service is as much about protecting the technician as it is about fixing the vehicle.
However, one must also be aware of the safety standards applied to vehicles in the U.S. Many safety provisions have been embedded in these systems, making it extremely difficult for one to hurt oneself. In fact, some vehicle manufacturers have no official provision for internal battery service. The battery is a replacement device with no pathway for internal service. However, as we are all aware, the aftermarket will always find a way. Bottom line, voltage can kill you, and you had better know what you are doing. As they say nowadays, “Fool around and find out!” (Figure 7)
THE ROAD AHEAD
The growth of EVs isn’t slowing down. Global sales soared past 10 million in 2022, and projections suggest that by 2035, electric models could dominate new vehicle markets. This momentum underscores the urgency of building a robust marketplace for EV service and diagnostics. Independent repair shops, dealerships, and even mobile technicians are adapting to meet the demand, offering everything from wheel align-
ments, battery swaps, drive unit replacement, and all that comes in between.
(Figure 8)
Alternative propulsion is here, but as mentioned in the beginning, your geographic location may not see such vehicles for quite some time or at all. As EVs become the norm, the ability to service and diagnose these vehicles will determine how smoothly society transitions to this electrified future. Investing in the tools, training, and technology to support today could help you stay well ahead of the curve.

Small improvements that make a big difference
Changes you can make to your shop’s environment to help improve efficiency and productivity.
By Keith Perkins, Contributing Editor
When it comes to reimagining shop efficiency, it starts with one key question: how much time are your technicians actually spending working in the bay versus walking between tasks, tools, or information? For us, that question led to a series of small but powerful improvements that, when stacked together, radically changed how we operate.
CUTTING DOWN THE BACK AND FORTH
As a shop owner, one of my main priorities has always been reducing wasted movement, especially the back and forth between toolboxes, computers, parts areas, and equipment. That inefficiency adds up fast. If a technician loses five to ten minutes per job doing something as simple as hunting for a
scan tool or walking over to a desktop computer, multiply that by every technician, every day, every bay, and you’ve got a time sink that cuts directly into productivity and revenue.
One of the very first changes we made to improve bay-level efficiency was simple. Every technician got a dedicated tool cart. (Figure 1) While some shops might hesitate due to cost, our
situation is a little different, we purchase all tools for our technicians. That allows us to control the setup, eliminate duplication, and ensure every technician has what they need where they need it.
This model may not work for every business, but even if your shop doesn’t supply all the tools, there are still valuable takeaways you can adapt. The key isn’t necessarily in buying everything. It’s in centralizing what technicians use most often and making sure it’s mobile and available at the bay.
CREATING CONVENIENT DIGITAL SUPPORT
Most technicians today have at least some digital support, whether that’s
Figure 1 — To cut down on having to walk back and forth, every technician has their own tool cart in their bay.

a laptop at their bay or a shared shop computer. In our shop, we’ve taken a hybrid approach. There are stationary desktop computers in fixed locations as well as rolling laptop carts equipped with OEM scan tools and programming devices. (Figure 2)
This setup matters because before it, technicians had to stop what they were doing, walk to a shared computer, look up a diagram or procedure, then walk back. That constant interruption killed focus and flow. Now, the mobile carts let them access what they need on demand. The desks are still there for deeper dives or when more screen time is needed to study a system or series of diagrams, but they’re no longer a bottleneck. Even shaving off five minutes here and there turns into hours over the course of a week.
A PLACE FOR EVERY PART
One of the smartest things we picked up came from our collision center partners: dedicated parts carts for every job. (Figure 3) These carts are used to collect and organize all components removed from a vehicle during service, as well as a central location for all ordered parts for a job. This small detail helps avoid the scenario where a trim piece or engine cover reappears mysteriously after the car is picked up. By placing everything on one mobile cart per job, nothing gets misplaced. You know exactly where it came from and what needs to go back on. It also helps the front office confirm that all parts have been reinstalled when doing a post-repair quality control check, and it prevents customer complaints or rechecks for missing items.
PROCEDURE-SPECIFIC TOOL CARTS
Beyond general tool access, we’ve created procedure-specific carts that further streamline how we operate. One of the best examples is our alignment
Figure 2 — Along with stationary desktop computers, we have rolling laptop carts equipped with OEM scan tools and programming devices.
Figure 3 — Having a dedicated parts cart for every job creates a central location for all ordered parts for a job.
tool cart (Figure 4), a single cart that holds everything needed to complete an alignment, all in one place.
This kind of setup makes a huge difference. In shops where technicians bring their own tools, this might seem impractical. But the truth is, a basic cart and a few essentials are far cheaper than the downtime associated with searching for tools, moving between bays, or reconfiguring the alignment rack. Compared to the cost of the alignment equipment itself, outfitting one cart is barely a drop in the bucket.
We’ve also built out carts for vehicle inspections (Figure 5), stocked with
Figure 4 — This cart holds everything needed to complete an alignment.
Figure 5 — The inspection cart is stocked with tablets, flashlights, mirror tools, and safety gear to perform vehicle inspections.
tablets, flashlights, mirror tools, and safety gear. Our wiring diagnostics and repair cart contains heat shrink, wire, terminals, zip ties, and all the associated tools we need to do clean and consistent electrical repairs. (Figure 6) In fact, this cart gets so much attention that visitors to our shop regularly photograph it as an example of how wiring setups should be organized.
LETTING YOUR FLAG FLY
Now here’s something that may seem small, but has been one of the most effective tricks we’ve implemented. In our facility, we have 20 flat bays, and that means up to 20 vehicles inside at any given time. With that many cars packed in, it’s incredibly easy for a cart to disappear. Even if it’s five feet away, it can be blocked by a lift, a vehicle door, or another technician’s setup. You’ll
p Figure 6A — Our wiring diagnostics and repair cart contains heat shrink, wire, terminals, zip ties, and more for electrical repairs.
spend 10 to 15 minutes just walking around looking for it.
To solve this, we added 6" tall colorcoded flags to each cart. (Figure 7) It sounds ridiculous until you try it, but once those flags went up, the problem vanished. You can now spot any cart in the building with a quick glance. No wasted motion. No frustration. No wasted time. It’s such a simple fix, but the impact has been massive.
BE INTENTIONAL
At the end of the day, this isn’t about carts or flags or fancy tools. It’s about observing how your people move and then eliminating friction wherever you can. Watch your shop. Study it. Ask questions. Where do technicians
Figure 7 — Putting flags on your tool carts helps to keep them visible all around the shop, even when vehicles or other obstacles may "hide" them.
p Figure 6B — The wiring diagnostics and repair cart garners much attention from visitors; they take photos for an example of how this kind of cart should be set up.

walk most frequently? What are they waiting on? What tools are shared that could be duplicated? What delays are happening every single day that nobody talks about?
Once you see those patterns, you can start making changes. Most improvements aren’t giant renovations. They’re usually a series of tiny adjustments that eliminate a few steps, shave off a few minutes, or reduce a little bit of frustration. When you do that over and over, the results snowball.
Efficiency is a game of inches. There’s no silver bullet. But there are things you can do right now that can start saving you time and money immediately. Add a parts cart for each job. Set up a mobile computer station. Create dedicated carts for key services like alignments or inspections. Attach a tall flag to every cart. Supply frequently used tools centrally, even if not every tool is company-supplied. Observe your team, refine their flow, and cut the wasted steps.
Every one of these tactics is a result of watching our shop closely, listening to our technicians, and constantly refining the way we work. They’re not about spending more money. They’re about being intentional and smart with the tools and layout you already have.
At the end of the day, the real strategy is to pay close attention to how your technicians, your support staff, and even you move through the shop. Watch how tools, information, and people flow, and start trimming the unnecessary steps, motions, or search efforts. Each little improvement, though it might seem minor in isolation, adds up in a big way over time. So start looking at how you can supercharge your shop’s efficiency with simple, repeatable improvements like these. And don’t forget to share anything that really works for you on your favorite social media platform. You never know who else might benefit from a better way to work.

nesses, one for fuses, and one for relays. The concept is that you push the arms together with your fingers to act like pliers to release different connectors, fuses, and relays. They work so much better and quicker than using your fingers to release them.
Q: How easy was it to use?
A: It’s actually very easy to use. You simply put the pliers in place on whatever you are trying to release or remove, squeeze the arms together with your fingers, and pull the connector apart or the fuse or relay out. You can use your other hand on the handle to pull on whatever you clamped down on.
Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: The packaging is very nice. The plier set came in a foam tray with individual places for each plier. The foam tray will easily fit in a toolbox drawer.
Q: What features did you like?
A: The pliers seem to be very well made. The arms are very strong. The center portion of the tool is lime green in color to keep you from leaving it on a vehicle. The handle swivels for easy access and has a rough surface for a better grip. Each tool is individually labeled as to what it is designed to be used on.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used the pliers to release various wire harness connectors, fuses, relays, and vacuum harness connections. I haven’t had a chance to try them on fuel line connections yet.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: They seem to be pretty well thought out and capable of doing the jobs that they were designed for. I’m assuming that as connectors and clips change in the future, the company will also come out with new tools to release them.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?
A: Probably a solid nine. They are very nice and definitely something different than anything I had ever used before. They are a time-saver in the right situation, and we all know how many different connectors and clips we have to deal with every day and how frustrating they can be.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: Good packaging with no accessories included.
Q: What features did you like?
A: I liked the quality and the insulation of the sockets, ratchets, and extensions. Working live means that the high voltage is still on, and special precautions must be taken, like using PPE (personal protective equipment) and most of all, the proper insulated tools. Gray has made the tools that fit the job, keeping technicians safe while performing the task at hand.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: Adding wrenches and screwdrivers to the set. Editor’s note: Gray Tools offers other insulated tool sets featuring wrenches and screwdrivers.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used the set when working on an inverter, removing the inverter covers and the capacitors. The insulated tools should also be used when the circuit is off, since there are capacitors that may still have an electrical charge in them.
Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?
A: This set has better sockets. It’s no surprise to technicians that hybrid and
electric vehicles have high-voltage circuits that they need to protect themselves from and stay safe. They understand that they need PPE such as Class 0/1000V gloves with HV cover, along with glove dust, a holding bag, a special flash face shield, and a rescue pole. But how about when it comes to working live on a high voltage vehicle when tools need to be used. Well, that’s where Gray Tools comes into play to prevent arcing and most of all to protect the technician.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall?
A: Eight. Safety matters, and Gray Tools has done a good job of protecting the user from high voltage. The 25-piece socket set, extension, and ratchet work well while protecting the end user. I recommend that if you’re working on high-voltage vehicles that you make the investment in Gary Tool’s socket set. Gray Tools prevents the shock factor, protecting the tech.

SUNEX Tools 8” x 10” Flexible Magnetic Mat
Q&A with C.J. Fay, digital and brand senior marketing manager for SUNEX Tools.
Q: What makes this product innovative?
A: One of the things that really makes this product innovative is it's 12 ounces, so it’s so light. It’s got the PVC layer so that you don’t have to worry about cleaning it up or whatnot. It was intentionally designed to be 8” by 10” so that it would fit on lift posts. And of course, the thing that people are really excited about is that it can hold up to 40 lbs, and it’s really like a modern interpretation of a parts bowl — something that’s been around for 25 years — but it does what a parts bowl does, and it does it better.
Q: What was the inspiration behind creating the product?
A: The inspiration was really about making the technician’s life better. We want to make things more productive, so that they can get more done and make more money at the end of the day. And this product really checks all those boxes.
Q: How would you say that this is going to improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?
A: It really excels where parts bowls let you down. So, a parts bowl, you can put your parts in there, right? But you can’t really put any tools. It’s too oddly shaped. And so, this will allow you to carry your tools as well as your parts. It also goes to the next level, holding oversized tools … [and it's] versatile in that it’s flexible, so you can fold this and you can put it on either side of a lift post, for instance, and then you can hold different tools on different sides. I’ve seen people use it on arms, posts, transmission jacks, toolboxes, control arms, frame rails, and vehicles. So, if you’re working on a job and you want to have your tools at hand, it’s been great.
Q: What feedback have you been getting from technicians?
A: Very positive feedback. They love the strength of the magnets. We use a rare-earth magnet that’s a really high-quality magnet. It’s also easy to use. And they love the durability of the PVC and the mat itself. And additionally, it can hold so much weight while being so light. It hardly feels like I’m holding anything, but knowing that this will hold 40 pounds, it’s absolutely jaw-dropping. It’s also very forgiving, and what I mean by that is, if you put this on a metal surface, and then you’ve got your tools on it, or your parts, when you go to pull those off, the mat is not coming with it, right? It’ll stay attached, but you can get what you need to and then move on with your job.

Building a career one tool at a time
This tech’s uniquely effective setup houses his carefully curated collection of tools.
By Griffin Matis, Associate Editor
Though he’s now production manager at Morrie’s West Bend Honda in Wisconsin, Alex Hess originally started washing cars in the wash bay. When a lube tech position became available, he seized the opportunity to prove himself.
“About six weeks into being a tech, I remember Honda was having issues with their transmissions. On my days off, I took on the challenge of rebuilding one ... it took me two days to finish the job, which was longer than expected. But I quickly moved up the ranks, and the rest is history. If I hadn’t taken that leap, who knows where I’d be today?”
Part of the process of moving up the ranks involved figuring out his workflow and finding out how to better service the vehicles that came into the shop
Alex Hess
Shop: Morrie’s West Bend Honda
Location: West Bend, Wisconsin
each day. Like most techs, Hess started from scratch.
“When I started out, I had very basic tools like everyone else,” he says. “One of the first things I noticed was how many veteran techs didn’t even have some of the basics — they were borrowing tools, stuff that would make the job easier, all around the shop. I never wanted to be that guy.”
BUILDING A SOLUTION
Watching senior technicians constantly running between boxes and bays looking for a specific tool drove the point
home for Hess. Even though he was starting at essentially zero, he made a plan.
“Back then, I didn’t have a car payment. I drove a beater, had no house or kids, and figured instead of spending money like my friends were, I’d invest in my future. So, I started buying tools — $200 a week with one tool truck, $100 with another — for two years straight. My goal was to never walk onto the truck without buying something.”
Hess’ investment paid off, and as his supply of tools grew, so did his abilities and efficiency. He didn’t always walk off a truck with a life-changing purchase, but even the mistakes turned into valuable lessons on their own.
“Looking back, I wish I’d talked more with the senior techs and asked them, ‘What’s something you only use once or twice a year but that saves you time when you need it?’” Hess explains. “Because I bought a lot of tools thinking I’d use them and didn’t or found better options later.”
PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT
Of course, constantly buying tools meant needing a place to put them. When Hess started as a tech, the shop had built-in boxes that never really impressed. He maintained a sizeable box with lockers and a hutch that got the job done before Snap-on’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Truck pulled up one day with a jaw-dropper.
“I saw a white EPIQ on the Rock ‘n’ Roll Truck, and I was hooked. White seemed like a terrible idea for a mechanic, but it looked so clean and classy,” he remembers. “My [last] box was a silver vein hammer finish, so it didn’t show fingerprints or dirt. But I couldn’t stop thinking about that white EPIQ. It just looked so classy, and I loved the way that the drawers pulled.”
After trading in his old box for the EPIQ, he never looked back. Even after looking at other boxes and manufactur-

BIG TIME BOXES
ers, he felt that there was only one that met his needs.
“What makes it a little bit different than what else is on the market is that there’s some toolboxes where you put your tall sockets in your deep drawer and they don’t fit in there, and then some [drawers] are too deep,” Hess says. “The Snap-on top drawer and deeper drawers are the perfect height for your deeper sockets and your power tools. It doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot of wasted space in there.”
While there’s only so much you can do to protect the exterior of your toolbox, Hess knew he wanted to keep the stainless steel top as flawless as he could – especially given how quickly dings, scratches, and smudges can accumulate in a shop environment. The day it was delivered, he got a local glass company to cut him a piece of Lexan that went over the top.
“I don’t remember how old my toolbox is now, it’s got to be 10 or 12 years old, but that stainless top is still in mint condition,” he says. “It still has all the original light reflection that makes the hutch brighter. I can stick important service bulletins or any kind of paperwork underneath it.”
A WORKING SETUP
His mobile setup nowadays consists of two SideKIQ carts and two KRSC101 workstations that he acquired unexpectedly at the same time, but his main setup is just as optimized.
“What’s unique about my setup is that it’s a corner cubicle setup. Most guys run it in a straight line, and I love the look of that, it’s definitely got the wow factor, but the reason I went with a corner configuration is because it’s easier for me to access all of my tools,” Hess says. “I can be doing my work orders on one of my screens, and if I need a tool that isn’t in the box that I’m using, I literally just turn around and it’s right there. I don’t have to walk 10 to 15
steps down to get to whatever I need.”
With his ever-growing collection of tools, Hess quickly learned just how important it was to make optimal use of every inch of space available. Foam organizers are a viable option for some setups, although Hess vastly prefers the more modular Mantis Toolgrid system for his needs.
“Organization, I feel, is really important because as you grow, toolbox space comes at a premium. How are you going to store your pliers? Are you standing them upright, are you storing them flat?” Hess shares. “That Toolgrid was one of the best organizational investments that I’ve had.”
THE DAILY DRIVER
One SideKIQ has been optimized for his day-to-day work, giving him access to nearly everything he typically needs while remaining easily mobile for moving in and out of the shop.
“I have slots and dots panels on both sides, so I hang all my power tools,” he says. “On one side, I have a vacuum, a
jump pack, and a shelf. On the other side, I would probably say 80 to 90 percent of my daily use tools are in there, so if I need to work on another rack in the shop or I need to work in the parking lot across the way, I can do most of my work out of that cart, and I feel like that’s a huge advantage.”
The advantages of a purposeful, organized setup don’t just extend to the work you’re doing on a vehicle. Of course, looks aren’t everything, and the tech using the tools matters more than where they’re stored, but the reality is that your setup reflects who you are as a professional to the outside world.
“When somebody walks in and sees a box of that size ... it’s like instant validation,” he explains. “You can see it’s clean, it’s organized, and that I take pride in my work.”
Hess' entire collection is just as organized and optimized as his daily go-to cart.
