FEATURED PROJECT: LITHIUM-ION BATTERY PRODUCTION PLANT
Battery megaplant sparks electric revolution
LH Battery Company selected Turner, Yates Construction, and Kokosing Industrial to build a 40-GWh electric vehicle battery plant in Fayette County, Ohio. The 400,000,000 sq. ft. facility, situated on 468 acres, started construction in early 2023, with substantial completion targeted for late 2024 and production beginning in 2025. The site will employ 2,600 workers daily and produce pouchtype lithium-ion cells with an annual capacity of 40 GWh.
Routing 40” diameter pipes across a four-million-sq. ft. building presented a challenge. To streamline the process, prefabricated spine racks with three levels of pipes were used, transitioning work from the field to the fabrication shop. These racks, running the building’s length with sections measuring 40’ x 8’ x 8’ and totaling 2,562 feet, supported utilities such as water, gas, compressed air, nitrogen, and chilled water. Supplemental steel columns were added to ensure structural integrity and reduce on-site fabrication needs. This approach saved 4 months on the MEP schedule.
