What makes a good tool distributor?
Being a good distributor has everything to do with being there for your customers and not much else.
What makes a good tool distributor?
I’ve been writing for this magazine for about five years now, and in that time, I’ve spoken with some of this industry’s most successful distributors. They all mention many of the same things that have led them to succeed – consistently showing up for their customers, asking questions, and providing their customers with the best service possible.
March is National Women’s Month, and I bring this up because if you look at the list of qualities that make a good tool distributor above, you’ll see that being a good tool distributor is not synonymous with being a male tool distributor.
I know that seems obvious. What does being a male or female tool distributor have to do with anything? Unfortunately, for some people, it does matter. In this month’s issue, we are celebrating all the female tool distributors out there.
Of the three women interviewed for this month, there was a common thread in their response to the question, “What is it like being a woman in this industry?” And that thread was respect. Whether they were being respected for their decision to join such a predominately
male industry, receiving a lack of respect for being a woman, or knowing that to earn respect you must also be respectful.
“Starting out was tough because nobody wanted to buy from me,” says Mac Tools distributor Staci Effertz, (Show Me Your Truck, Pg. 32), “If they would ask me something, they wouldn’t believe what I was telling them. Because I’m a woman, they didn’t think I knew what I was talking about.”
However, Effertz notes, you have a lot of the same customers for a long time, so she won them over by being the tool person everybody wants to go. She showed her customers the respect she expected to receive from them, and she got it in return.
Shai Moss, an independent tool distributor with Stahlwille Tools featured in this month’s cover story (Pg. 20), explains that for her, it’s about “putting out there that ‘I’m just a tool dealer who happens to be female’ versus focusing on being female.”
The women featured between the pages of this month’s issue all exude the qualities of what it means to be a good tool distributor, so please help the Professional Distributor team celebrate them and all the other women in this industry.

A job ‘WELD’ DONE
Welding and collision tools can be a tricky beast to tackle for many tool distributors. It’s important to stay up-to-date so you can better service your customers’ individual needs.
By Elli Carder, Assistant Editor
When it comes to stocking welding and collision tools on your truck, it might seem like a daunting endeavor. As part of a vast and ever-changing industry, it’s important to understand what welding tools you should have on your truck and how to approach selling them to your customers. Just like with most things, the needs of one customer don’t always resemble the needs of the next and without proper knowledge it can be difficult to know where to start.
MAKING THE SALE
Independent distributor Shai Moss has found a way to sell welding and collision tools that works well for her business and benefits her customers. Moss started her business in 2019 after her husband suggested a change in occupation following a series of jobs that she was struggling to find enjoyment in. Hesitant at first, Moss did her share of research and hasn’t looked back since.
“I wish I had done it 20 years sooner,” says Moss.
Moss visits a broad variety of shops in her town of Gainesville, Florida.
From dealerships and independently owned automotive shops, to the city bus garage and university motor pool. Any place she finds that looks like they’d be interested in buying tools, Moss finds time in her schedule to go and introduce herself.
Instead of keeping large, heavy equipment that might take up unnecessary room on her truck where other high-demand tools could be, Moss has found that keeping smaller products in stock works better for her. Things like hatch jammers, different types of clip lifters, flexi blocks, and other tools that
her customers use regularly for welding and collision needs, have been some of her bestselling products. When it comes to selling actual welding machines, she orders them on a caseby-case basis. Understanding what a customer’s needs are is imperative to getting the proper products they’ll need to perform their repairs.
GETTING THE SCOOP ON WELDING
Welding can be an advantageous skill to have in any auto body repair shop as vehicles evolve and move toward using more lightweight materials in their production. It can also be a dangerous process that should be done only by trained technicians in accordance with OEM repair guidelines.
“The biggest advantage of being able to weld and pull a dent rather than replace the entire panel is cost,” says Michael Cooper, president of H&S
Professional Distributor I March 2024 I VehicleServicePros.com 21 COVER STORY
Autoshot. “Originally, if you had a dent, you had to replace the entire hood.”
For mobile tool distributors to carry proper tools and equipment that promote the safety of technicians, they must have a basic understanding of welding techniques and practices.
MIG vs. TIG
There are different welding techniques that technicians use to perform their jobs well. Most often, technicians will use MIG (metal inert gas) welding, a technique that joins metals together using a continuously fed wire electrode and shielding gas with a handheld torch. For the technician who is just starting, MIG welding can be a good place to begin.
TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding is a process where a non-consumable tungsten electrode is used to produce a
weld. This type of welding is less automatic than MIG welding and requires more precision in comparison. It is ideal for working on the small, delicate areas of a vehicle.
Miller Electric offers the Multimatic 220 AC/DC, a multi-process welder that has both MIG and TIG functions. Users can switch welding gas, polarity, and welding process while recalling the last MIG or TIG settings. This option can be beneficial for a repair shop that doesn’t deal with collision repair as frequently, or for the technician who is looking to start welding.
Multi-process can be a beneficial feature, especially for first time welders, notes Beau Gellings, product manager of the Multimatic 220 at Miller Electric.“Welding may not be the core competency of a [technician] or something that they do every day” says

Gellings. “Therefore, they might be a little apprehensive to take on that task, especially if they’re not familiar with weld settings…that’s where the auto set from Miller is going to allow those technicians to get their projects set up quickly, efficiently, and accurately.”
Training for welders
The arrival of high-strength steel and aluminum in the production of many cars, has changed the way technicians approach repairs. Before, many repair shops would rely on a specialist to perform their welding needs. Now, most technicians can expect to encounter a welder at some point in their career.
Practice makes perfect in most industries, but this is especially true when it comes to welding. Brendan Geiger, welding engineer at Miller Electric, notes that training in the
garage can often look like a technician grabbing some scrap metal and a welder and just seeing what they’re able to do with it. Experience varies from technician to technician, so having a selling approach that can be applied to
a wide range of customers is beneficial.
Whether it’s spot welding—a process used, in many instances, to pull out dents on panels or replace them entirely—or more complex procedures that involve additional training and

experience, any technician can excel in the world of welding with the proper training and tooling.
STOCKING YOUR TRUCK
When a technician is thinking about adding a welder to their repair shop, whether it’s the first welder or one of many, there are certain features that they look for. Depending on their experience level and comfortability, they’ll want to find something that fits the needs of their shops to a T.
Versatility
Miller Electric’s product manager, Robert Rodriquez, suggests looking for welders that offer versatility. This can look like a welder with the ability to switch between functions, like the Multimatic 220 from Miller Electric, or a welder that can be plugged into different amperages and voltages. For smaller repair shops that don’t have the space for more than one welder, versatility can broaden the scope of their work.
Size matters
Dent Fix Equipment’s director of marketing, Geoff Preston recommends many tools for shops to keep in their toolbox but notes that smaller tools can be easier to keep on hand for mobile tool distributors.
Smaller tools like Dent Fix’s Shunting Pliers, No. DF-SP360, don’t take up much space on the truck making them easy to stock. The pliers help ensure proper welds with their thick copper wire and pads and are beneficial for squeeze-type resistance spot welding which sometimes requires additional measures, in the form of shunting the current flow to create a spot weld.
Portability
“[Technicians] may not want to have three different welders in their shop,” says Miller’s Rodriquez. “They may not have the space.”
That’s where portability comes into play. The Professional 200A MIG Welder, No. HSW-6220, from H&S Autoshot is a professional portable inverter MIG welder with 200A of power on a 230V line. Lighter and portable equipment allows users to move the welder around their shop instead of having a stationary setup that could limit the technician’s abilities. With portability, the need for multiple welding stations is limited.
SALES TIPS
As a mobile tool distributor, you might not sell welding and collision tools to your customers on a regular basis, but when the time does come, you’ll want to be prepared.
1. Ask questions
Finding the right welder for your customer is all about understanding the
individual needs of their shop. Ask questions about the scope of their work, the repairs they typically deal with, and the training their technicians have undergone or plan to take. Moss recommends asking specific, leading questions like what type of metal they’re using and how thick it is. What is the end goal and what do they have available that will help them reach that goal? Fill in the gaps in their answers by offering up a tool that will make their job more efficient.
2. Create a game plan
There’s a well-known saying, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” When you fail to come up with a strategy to sell your welding tools, you might find it difficult to get products into the hands of your customers. Do your research on the ways your products can be used by your customers. This might look like

going into shops and asking questions like Moss does with her customers.
“Conduct your research and create a game plan,” says Dent Fix Equipment's Preston. “Shops follow the equipment guidelines published from the vehicles [and] brands they wish to consider repairing. Many manufacturers have contacts that help shops align with the certification requirements and are a great information source.”
3. Find resources to stay up-to-date Staying up-to-date on welding technology can be tricky, especially with new products and innovations coming out regularly. Moss likes to stay current on industry trends by looking at manufacturers’ websites she’s purchased from in the past and reaching out to see if they would be willing to send her new information. She also
recommends finding and subscribing to newsletters that cover welding and collision repair news.
As a distributor, working in the ever-changing automotive industry means there’s always something new for you to learn. If you’re thinking
about adding welding equipment and tools to your truck’s inventory and you’re not sure where to start, don’t be afraid to reach out to manufacturers or skilled technicians in the industry. Chances are they’ll be happy to share their knowledge with you.

Automotive security: From basic locks to advanced cybersecurity
This evolution not only reflects the advancement in
automotive
technology but also the changing landscape of vehicle theft and the need to protect and maintain critical vehicle systems.
By Scott Brown, Technical Editor
Automotive security has evolved tremendously over the years. In the beginning, we had simple mechanical locks preventing physical theft. Today’s systems could be characterized as highly sophisticated digital fortresses, encompassing a vast range of technologies from basic alarms to complex electronic and cybersecurity systems with vehicle tracking and more. This evolution not only reflects the advancement in automotive technology but also the
changing landscape of vehicle theft and the need to protect and maintain critical vehicle systems.
VEHICLE THEFT REASONS — MORE THAN YOU MAY BE AWARE OF
Vehicle theft is supporting more than just the purpose of parts or a free ride. It provides financial support for nefarious activities such as human trafficking, drugs, and more. Many vehicles that are shipped offshore are

disassembled for parts, but even those that are not are rarely ever recovered. Many years ago, MercedesBenz launched the Theft Relevant Parts (TRP) program which serves to disincentivize thieves from stealing their vehicles for parts or reenabling vehicles that have partially disassembled.
ADVANCED SECURITY SYSTEMS IN MODERN VEHICLES
Modern vehicles are equipped with a variety of security systems, and this is where service professionals need to have access to proper service information and tooling. These include electronic immobilizers, which prevent the engine from starting by disabling the fuel, ignition, and or starting systems without the correct key or transponder. Some are equipped with sophisticated systems that include cameras and other sensors that detect movement, glass breakage, and unauthorized entry as well as possess GPS tracking devices that can support vehicle recovery following theft. GPS antennas are typically an area that thieves try to disable by disconnecting critical cabling during theft often damaging harnesses. This is something

Some vehicle manufacturers can provide support for crime investigations. Today it is not uncommon for law enforcement to quickly survey a crime scene looking for vehicles supporting such technologies. If the vehicle has its “security mode” active, the official can trigger vehicle recording, record the VIN, and then contact the vehicle manufacturer to obtain video recordings ( Figure 1)
THE EMERGENCE OF GATEWAY SECURITY SYSTEMS AND CYBERSECURITY
As vehicles have become more “cloud” connected and reliant on computer networks, the risk of cyberattacks has naturally increased. Gateway security systems act as firewalls, controlling access to the vehicle’s network and protecting critical safety systems such as collision mitigation and other systems supporting lateral and longitudinal control of the vehicle. These systems are crucial

for preventing unauthorized access and ensuring vehicle safety. Some vehicle manufacturers have deployed systems that authenticate the user at the vehicle performing service, creating a trail of vehicle access because of the potential for misuse.
FCA (NOW STELLANTIS) SECURITY CHALLENGES AND RESPONSES
In 2015, two security researchers Chris Valasek and Charlie Miller exposed significant vulnerabilities in Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) vehicles, demonstrating remote hacking by taking control of a vehicle underway on public roads. In response, FCA issued software updates and recalled affected vehicles, highlighting the industry’s need for constant vigilance and adaptation in cybersecurity. This activity paved the way for the AutoAuth program in place today. See my article from 2022 on this subject: VehicleServicePros.com/21218082.
EU RULINGS AGAINST FCA’S SECURE GATEWAY
Recent rulings by the European Union (EU) against FCA’s secure gateway system may have a significant impact on secure gateway access. In the fall of 2023, questions surfaced about the balance between security and accessibility for vehicle servicing. Currently, FCA is authenticating both the end user and the tool being used to access the vehicle systems residing behind the gateway. General Motors (GM)

has had a secure gateway for many years now which has mainly gone unnoticed by service personnel. GM decided long ago that they would be able to secure the vehicle with little to no disruption to the technician. Other manufacturers have either recently introduced a gateway or will be implementing such a system soon. The EU rulings will
likely have an impact on how manufacturers

and professional support channels. While these tools are vital for legitimate servicing, there is great concern about tool misuse to support vehicle theft. In fact, some professional service operators have experienced theft of their diagnostic and service tools primarily because of their ability to support vehicle theft.

and tool manufacturers to investigate ways to secure access to these tools and how they access
systems for service.
Some
that allowed unauthorized vehicle access. One example is that a private CAN bus was physically accessed from outside the vehicle where the bad actor injects a message onto the network spoofing the security system to authenticate and authorize vehicle access. As you can see, these vulnerabilities expose weaknesses in automotive security. This raises even more concerns about vehicle safety and security.
TESLA’S SECURITY SYSTEMS
It’s safe to say that Tesla is known as a software company first and a vehicle manufacturer second. As a Tesla owner over the past five years, I have witnessed how advanced and evolutionary their vehicle technology is. Their overthe-air (OTA) updates provide a pathway to deliver vehicle improvements, quick deployment of enhanced vehicle operation, and, of course, support service personnel with problem-solving. Adding keys, programming key cards, authorizing mobile devices and key fobs is a simple operation. Tesla has designed the system so that the vehicle owner can easily carry out these tasks ( Figure 2).
Recently, Tesla deployed a secure access method through NASTF where a vehicle security professional (VSP) can request secure access to the vehicle through Tesla’s system which requires the vehicle owner to grant access through their account.
RELAY ATTACK VULNERABILITIES
A relay attack is where a vehicle that doesn’t require a physical key (push button start) is spoofed into thinking that the key fob or authenticated mobile device is near the vehicle. This method typically involves two perps establishing a relay attack station (Figure 3) where one attempts to pick up the key fob signal with an antenna from inside a building or on the person (think shopping at the grocery store) and relay the authentication handshake communication to another person near the vehicle. I’ve seen many videos of this process taking place, and it’s quite perplexing. It makes me think about how these innovative technologies can leave many vehicles vulnerable. Tesla offers an additional layer of security where the owner can set up a PIN to drive. Other manufacturers may offer something similar.
CONCLUSION
Automotive security is an ever-evolving arena that requires continuous adaptation and advancement. Professional service personnel engaging in automotive service will continue to see more challenges related to security. Service success is highly dependent on the knowledge and skill levels service professionals maintain and the capabilities of their tooling. Consumers will also require updated knowledge and, in my opinion, this is where the trusted service professional can build credibility with their clients through education and the demonstration of service professionalism.

SHOW ME YOUR TRUCK
Putting the pieces together
This Mac Tools distributor’s truck is put together in a way that allows for copious amounts of inventory but is still comfortably spacious for her customers and herself.
By Emily Markham, Editor
Atool truck is like a puzzle – to get all your inventory to fit, you’ve got to put the pieces in the right places. Mac Tools distributor, Staci Effertz, has got her puzzle all figured out.
Eight years ago, Effertz started dating Tracy Snyder, owner of the three-truck Mac Tools distributor team she’s a part of, and one year later, he convinced her to quit her job and help him with the business. Fast forward five years and Effertz has taken over Snyder’s truck, as well as manages all the training for their other team members and part of the bookkeeping.
THE LAY OF THE TRUCK
Though the 2015 Freightliner truck was designed for Snyder, Effertz has made it her own.
“The key is organization,” she says. “It just makes your day go so much easier.”
And considering her schedule, organization is essential. Effertz is located in Minot, North Dakota, but her route has her covering oil fields in western North Dakota and eastern Montana for most of the week. She spends two days out on her route, comes back into town for a day to restock, and then spends another two days on the road. Because of this Effertz notes that her truck is “pretty packed.” However, “packed” doesn’t mean messy.
“I get people saying all the time, they’ve never seen a more clean and well stocked and organized truck,” she says. “I take pride in that.”
Additionally, her organization is important considering the size of the products she keeps on her truck.
“We carry large,” Effertz notes. “Extra-large sockets, extra-large wrenches. [Our customers] need bigger. Some of the sockets are 2-1/2” drive, so some of the sockets we order weigh 50 lbs.”
When Effertz says her truck is "pretty packed," she means it. Effertz explains that her passenger seat is often filled with special orders, her drawers on the bottom of her
shelves are always full, and the two compartments on the outside of the truck are never empty.
CUSTOMIZATIONS
With so much of her time spent on the road, it makes sense that some of the truck’s customizations were added for the comfort of the distributor. For instance, the 24’ truck has an extended opening for the desk space giving Effertz just a bit more wiggle room. Her desk also features a large monitor. She connects this to her laptop, so she doesn’t have to use the small screen of her computer.
A fridge is tucked away behind the desk for her personal use. Due to Effertz’s main customers being oil fields, there isn’t a good way for her to keep the fridge stocked throughout the day for customer use.
Overall, the desk space customizations allow for the area to stay neat and clean, which permits Effertz to showcase many product displays behind her desk.
“You have to utilize every inch of your truck,” she notes, “cause your truck is never big enough.”

Make some noise in your market
If you’re looking for a new way to make a sale, try out one of these tactics to grab your customers’ attention.
By Alan Sipe, Contributing Editor
So, you went to your annual company/wholesaler trade shows, bought more than you expected, and now the invoices are rolling in. Time to get out there and go sell something!
An interesting thing about our industry is that three of the four major flags start the year off with a sales meeting highlighting the previous year’s successes, the introduction of some new products, and a promotionpacked trade show. The result is that you and your territory competitors are all loaded with significant inventory … and invoices.
So, let’s develop a plan to profitably move more inventory to your current customers and maybe get some new customers too.
CHECK OUT THE COMPETITION
First, check out your competitors’ websites to learn what they are promoting. This will help you understand if any of your newly purchased products are really “new.” Now, answer these questions about those “new” products. Who are the target users of these products? Everybody? Body shops? Front-end technicians?
Now, fire off an email or text to those target users including the literature and a comment or two of your own. Don’t post the price since your competition will surely get the information from one of your customers. A second email/text of the same info four to five days later will keep the
product fresh in their minds as you make your sales calls. As you make your calls, be darn sure you carry those products you’re hyping and show them to those target customers.
A side note about carrying in products to think about …
Way back in my Klein Tools (1979) days as a district manager (salesman), we were introducing a line of really top-notch metal hand toolboxes. For the first week or so I had almost no luck selling them to my distributors. After a lot of “No, thank-you’s,” I realized that I was walking in the door of my customers carrying a bright red metal toolbox instead of my normal sample case. In reality, what I was doing was giving my distributors time to surmise that I was going to try to sell them toolboxes and giving them lots of time to come up with a reason why they didn’t want to stock toolboxes.
Finally, I started carrying the box into my sales calls inside a plain old brown grocery shopping bag. With this tactic, I was able to explain that we were introducing a new product that they were not selling, yet all of their customers used it. This worked perfectly, and we placed a lot of toolbox displays in my electrical distributors’ showrooms.
The same is true for you. If you walk into a customer location openly carrying a new tool of any kind you take away your opportunity to make a great feature, advantage, benefit, close
presentation. In plain words, you’re letting the cat out of the bag before you want to.
Carrying on, the email approach I mentioned before will begin to build some interest in your new product, and if this really is a new product, I imagine it is in your current company promotional brochure as well.
TRY SOME RETAIL MARKETING TACTICS
Additionally, you may want to use some of the marketing tactics the retailers use so successfully. An email/text to all your customers highlighting that you just returned from your company trade show, and you have excellent levels of your popular products plus many of those hard-to-get items, can go a long way. People still remember all those supply chain product shortages, so use this to your advantage.
Our objective here is to remind your technicians that you are a reliable source for the products they need. You are the jobber they can rely on.
So far, you’re announcing that you have an excellent inventory of cool products for sale that are not on sale However, sometimes the time comes in business when you need to reduce some inventory and you need to do it quickly. So, think retail.
By advertising that you have some products that are on sale or have excellent pricing, you get your audience’s attention. Secondly, you’re not
34 Professional Distributor I March 2024 I VehicleServicePros.com GO SELL SOMETHING
saying everything is on sale just that some things are.
Start this project with your product spreadsheet. This spreadsheet should show you the quantity on hand, movement, costs, list price, and margins.
Those high-margin, slow-moving products could be your first targets. Discounting some of these slow-moving items, which you have probably already paid for, will free up some cash to help with those pesky trade show invoices.
The next target of your discounting program could be those convenience items like beef jerky or drink mixes. These items should be exceptionally high-margin items to begin with so advertising them at lower prices will also get some attention and create some revenue.
Our objective here is to make some noise in your marketplace because you have excellent inventory and excellent prices. You’re not giving away the store
– you’re advertising, you’re marketing, you’re selling.
How many times have you seen a store with the sign out front: BIG SALE!! You walk in the store only to find some selected items up front on sale but most of the products are simply for sale at regular prices. The BIG SALE sign got you in the door, and even if you did or didn’t purchase an item that was on sale, you probably bought some other full-price items. Like when you go into Costco only to get that $4.99 rotisserie chicken and you come out with the chicken, wine, a shirt, and a new 65” TV.
BRING ON THE MERCH
One final thought to make some noise in your market. Merch.
I’ve been in the hand tool business since 1977 and absolutely nothing sells tools better than hats and t-shirts. I just checked and you can get OK quality logo’d shirts for less than $5.00 and hats about the same.
Giving away a $5.00 hat on a $200 sale will get you a lot more business than a 10 percent discount and cost you a lot less. A $200 sale at 40 percent gross margin sale will net you $80. Subtract the five dollars for the hat and it’s still $75 in your pocket. Compared to a $200 sale at a 10 percent discount, which the price down to $180 minus the $120 cost and you end up with $60 in your pocket.
Make some noise in your market and … go sell something!

What inventory should you stock on your tool truck?
Inventory will always differ from truck to truck, but what can you sell to get your customers excited about coming onto your truck?
By Art Richardson, Contributing Editor
You learn by trying.
It’s nice to find add-on inventory to sell on a regular basis. It checks off some of the boxes of “must have” stuff for your truck. Personally, I never cared much about non-tool items. NASCAR replicas, candy bars, clothing, hand soap, etc … all failures for me for many reasons. Somewhat contributory was my lack of real all-out persistence to talk up these products. I’m here to sell tools! Why waste time on other products?
Then one of my warehouse distributors suggested selling beef jerky. He said one guy he had was selling 30 or more bags per week. Still, my practical side said, “Stay away, this is just
another distraction on your quest to sell four figures worth of tools every day.” I ended up placing a small order anyway.
GIVE IT A LOW-RISK TRIAL
Sales went well but I noticed something … customers were a bit excited about these bags of jerky. One night a non-customer asked me for something to eat because he was hungry. He said that he had no money, but I replied, “I can’t see you go hungry. Here, take this last bag of jerky off my truck. I will see you next week.”
I didn’t expect much. The first trip back he ignored me. But on the second trip, low and behold, he paid me and has become a $50-$85 a week payer since.
SMALL STEPS WITH GOOD RESULTS
Sales have continued to perk up with a little push from beef jerky and beef sticks. So, what’s your beef jerky? Your inventory should be tailored to your customers, but change is inevitable, so you may need to mix it up. Some items may not be profitable but might lead to better sales for you. Some dealers offer soft drinks, cookies, sunglasses, raffles, and contests. All may have their place, just don’t let them distract from your main point of sale – tools.
SUGGESTED INVENTORY
As mobile tool distributors, we’ve all had products that don’t sell well and just take up space on our trucks. Do
what you can to get these products off your truck, such as running a BOGO or discounting the item—not too much though, you don’t want to be losing money. Once that’s taken care of you might want to chat with your customers for ideas for new inventory. Showing a flyer and asking for their thoughts is another way to get customer involvement. I like to laminate a few pages to emphasize the specials and new products.
My favorite and best-selling items are jump packs, tire gauges, all sorts of lights, test equipment, Milwaukee Tool impacts, all sorts of hand ratchets, and extractors. However, your business will depend on your current customer base. I reiterate, TALK to your customers about tool preference and selection.
MAKE A STATEMENT
We need to jump on opportunity. Call a rep, the company, or the warehouse and pick their brains about new tools and what’s hot. Mind you, one size does not fit all so think about what your customers will be most interested in. Also, don’t be afraid to do your own research into what’s popular. Try hopping into an online chatroom or group page on social media to see what technicians or other distributors are talking about.
Let me know what works for you—what have you learned about the inventory you need to carry on your truck?

From hairdresser to tool distributor
Being a woman in this industry may not always be easy, but this Cornwell tool distributor claims the pros outweigh the cons.
By Kayla Nadler, Associate Editor
Just a year and a half ago Hunter Castaneda was working as a hairdresser and had no intention of leaving her job.
It wasn’t until one night when she overheard her father, a longtime Cornwell Quality Tools distributor, talk about how busy he was and how he had people asking him to service their shop, but he wasn’t able to because he didn’t have enough time that she began to reconsider.
In somewhat of a laughing manner, she asked him if she could help – not thinking he would take her seriously.
“He was like, ‘Well, why not?’” Castaneda said.
After that night, the two conjured up a plan and Castaneda soon found herself running her own route through Henderson to Las Vegas, Nevada.
“It was scary to go from one industry to a completely different industry but I’m glad I did; it’s just like with anything, the more you do it, the easier it gets,” Castaneda said. “It didn’t take long before I found a routine.”
CONTINUING THE LUCKY STREAK
When Castaneda started her new gig, her father saw this as an opportunity to upgrade his truck. Not only did he give his daughter his 2016 24’ Hino, but, as she was hoping, his luck with the truck as well.
What's your story?
Share the ups and downs of life on the road with us at Editor@VehicleServicePros.com and you could be featured in our next Tales from the Road column.
In fact, she didn’t even want to make changes to it to make it her own.
“He had so much luck with that truck that I didn’t want to change it,” she said.
Whether that is the reason for her smooth transition or not, Castaneda has been enjoying her career change and learning the ropes of running her own business and how to sell tools.
“Everybody has been super friendly,” she said. “I can truly be myself and it doesn’t feel like I’m going to work. It takes a lot of work, a lot of time, and a lot of effort but when done right, it’s super successful and I’m very grateful for what it’s given me.”
And since Castaneda is new to the tool-selling industry, she’s upfront with her customers and admits that she probably asks them more questions than they ask her.
“I don’t ever pretend I know what I’m talking about because I don’t, and
I’m pretty sure they know that,” she said. “They’re super helpful, and they love to give me as much information as I ask for.”
STANDING OUT
Castaneda runs her business like her father does, but not because that’s how he taught her but because it makes her stand out.
“We are truly there for our customers on another level that’s not just business — it’s friendship, it’s consistency, and it’s service on top of selling them the tools,” she notes.
Castaneda doesn’t let anything stand in her way, including the fact that she’s a woman who is new to the industry.
“Being a woman in the industry definitely has its ups and downs but I can easily say that the pros outweigh the cons,” she says. “I receive a lot of respect from my friends, family, customers, and even strangers on the road, for taking on such a maledominated industry."
