The Nutrition Program of the ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Center) of Rock County still has Senior Farmers’ Market vouchers available. Of the 560 sets allotted for Rock County, there are still 130 vouchers that can still be claimed.
Vouchers worth $35 are offered to eligible seniors to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from participating vendors at farmers’ markets and roadside stands around Wisconsin. Each eligible individual may receive vouchers only once per calendar year.
In previous years, vouchers had been worth only $25, and there had been a limit of only one set of vouchers per household. However, this year vouchers are worth $35, and are available to all qualified individuals in the household.
Those eligible are seniors age 60 or older and Native Americans age 55 or older, who have a monthly household income of not more than $2,248 for a one-person household, or not more than $3,041 for a two-person household. Only Rock County residents may apply.
Vouchers are offered on a first come, first served basis. Vouchers will be made available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (no appointment needed), at the ADRC, 1717 Center Ave., Janesville. Enter at Door 18.
An authorized representative (or proxy) may be designated to apply for certification. Those who are unable to get to the ADRC themselves should call 608-7575428 to request a Proxy Authorization Form. This is the only acceptable document which will permit someone else to receive vouchers on behalf of an eligible senior. The form must be signed by the voucher recipient and then taken by the authorized representative to the ADRC. There is a strict limit of four proxy forms per representative.
This is a perfect opportunity for Rock County seniors to avail themselves of fresh, local produce that is only available a short time each year. Fresh tomatoes, sweet corn, green beans, peas, radishes, cucumbers, and beets are just a few of the items which may be purchased with the vouchers.
The Nutrition Program, part of the ADRC of Rock County, is an equal opportunity provider.
Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication for program information (e.g. Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language, etc.) should contact the agency (state or local) where they applied for benefits. Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at 800-877-8339. Additionally, program information may be made available in languages other than English per Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Staff Manual (Rev. 02/17).
Did you know that 31% of people have reported walking into someone or something while on their phone? And 43% of people say it’s okay to use their phone while on a date?
Between Oct. 31 and Nov 7, 2022, a total of 1,000 online interviews were conducted among a nationally representative sample of U.S. consumers between 18 to 41 years old by Consumer Insights, in partnership with PureSpectrum, to find this information.
In honor of Cellphone Courtesy Month in July, UScellular is sharing recent survey data and tips to mind your digital manners.
Did you know that more than half of women over the age of 50 experience issues with bladder or bowel control? These problems can be slightly bothersome or totally debilitating. For some women, the chance of embarrassment controls their life by keeping them from enjoying many activities.
A program offered through the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) can help. Mind Over Matter: Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder is a workshop researched and developed through the University of Wisconsin Madison – School of Medicine and Public Health, designed to give women, age 50 and older, the
tools they need to take control of their bladder and bowel symptoms.
The workshop provides information, group activities, and simple exercises and dietary changes to practice at home. Please note, if you are a woman age 50 and older and are not currently experiencing any bladder or bowel symptoms,
you are still able to benefit from this program to delay or prevent any bladder and/or bowel symptoms from developing. It is never too early or too late to begin.
Join ADRC for the next upcoming offering of Mind Over Matter on the following dates:
• Wednesday, Aug.16
• Wednesday, Aug. 30
• Wednesday, Sept. 13
Mind Over Matter: Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder, consists of three, 2-hour sessions, meeting every other week. All three sessions will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Community Building located in Brooklyn. It is highly encouraged to be able to attend all three sessions. This class is free of charge. Pre-registration is necessary and spots are limited. No living-in county requirements. This class fills up fast, so be sure to call right away.
To learn more or to register for the workshop, please contact the Green County ADRC at 608-328-9499 or visit the website at adrcgreencounty.org.
Survey results included:
• The place deemed most inappropriate to use your phone is in a place of worship – 64% of people consider that off-limits.
• Only 53% of people believe sitting in a movie theater while on your smartphone is unacceptable, but that is trending up from 47% in January 2022.
• Less than half of consumers think cellphone use during dinner with family and friends (42%), while at a restaurant (23%) or while spending time with their kids (19%) is inappropriate.
“As we rely more and more on our cellphones, we sometimes forget to be mindful and courteous to those around us,” said Christine Paulsen, Director of Sales for Wisconsin at UScellular. “UScellular is encouraging people to put down their phones to better connect with the people who matter most, especially during those times where being on a device could be insensitive to those around us.”
The company is offering the following tips to help smart-
phone users mind their digital manners:
• US Mode: Did you know your smartphone offers customizable settings that will help reset your relationship with technology? UScellular will now help you design your own US Mode settings, so you won’t be distracted by your phone at dinner or during other times when it is best to be courteous to those around you.
• Contain the noise: Sound can travel further than you think, which can create a negative experience for those around you. Set ringers and vibration patterns on low and be mindful of your own voice when you take phone calls or video chat. Apple AirPods, Samsung Galaxy Buds or other types of headphones while you game, take a work call or stream content can help contain your digital noise.
• Watch your step: Don’t be the next person to walk into someone or something while on your phone. It is a good idea to stop walking, look up and be attentive when using a wireless device.
Options offered for grief support
Local adults living in southern Wisconsin who are grieving can find hope and healing with the help of Agrace grief support specialists.
This August, Agrace will host “Bridges,” a virtual grief support group for adults who are grieving the death of any loved one. This group provides emotional and peer support in a professionally led, group setting and requires advance registration.
Bridges (virtual) meets the second Wednesday of each month and participants can attend as often as they feel the need for support. The next meeting is Aug. 9, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., via Zoom.
Online groups meet via Zoom using a tablet, computer or smartphone, which means people can join from anywhere in the United States.
One-on-one grief support is also available by phone or vid-
eo chat. This support is open to anyone, even if the person who died did not have hospice care.
There is no fee for Agrace grief support if a participant’s family member was served by Agrace Hospice Care or another hospice in the past 12 months. Modest fees may apply for others, and fees can be lowered or waived, if needed.
To make an appointment or register for a grief group, visit Agrace.org/GriefGroups, call 608-327-7110, or email griefsupport@agrace.org.

For the past few months, Wisconsin Army National Guard aviation soldiers have partnered with Aurora BayCare Medical Center to conduct training to provide a higher level of care for critically ill patients being transported by UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
“This helps train nurses for future partnerships if we ever needed to evacuate a patient using types of transportation that we don’t often see,” said Robyn Merkatoris, a nursing professional development specialist for the intensive care unit at Aurora BayCare.
Soldiers and helicopters from the West Bend, Wisconsin-based Company C, 1st Battalion, 168th Aviation Regiment (GSAB) and Company G, 2nd Battalion, 104th Aviation Regiment (GSAB) – the medevac assets of the 1st Battalion, 147th Aviation in Madison – have engaged in training
scenarios tailored specifically to the critical care flight paramedics, aircrews and the team at Aurora BayCare. Sgt. James Hughes, a flight medic with Company G, said that the cross training is important because of the significant differences between the military and civilian aircraft.
“It’s about setting up for success in the event of an emergency,” Hughes explained.
Maj. Sarah Latza, the operations officer with the Wisconsin Army National Guard’s Army Aviation Support Facility #1 in West Bend, said this kind of training is impossible to conduct internally as an air ambulance company.
“Aurora BayCare’s participation increases our flight medics’ and aircrews’ exposure and capabilities,” Latza said. “It also increases communication and coordination with civilian organizations in our backyard so that when the domestic mission happens – search and rescue patient drop-off, request to
transport a critically ill patient that civilian EMS isn’t able to support – our soldiers and aircrew members and the civilian medical support infrastructure are familiar with each other.”
Wisconsin National Guard Soldiers Capt. John Jenkins and Staff Sgt. Eric Furbee coordinated with Sarah Pearson, nursing director at Aurora BayCare, to make this training possible.
“This kind of partnership is the only way to get this kind of training,” Jenkins said. “Someone brought it up during a field training exercise, and I helped link the teams together, coordinate training, and have gotten to see it come to fruition.”
Latza said the goal is to conduct this training event monthly moving forward.
“This training fully recognizes and supports the level of skill that our critical flight paramedics have been trained to,” Latza said, “and resonates fully with our domestic and overseas mission.”
Aurora BayCare Medical Center professionals and soldiers from the medevac assets of the Wisconsin Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 147th Aviation Regiment unload a mock patient from a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay on June 22. This training is designed to prepare both soldiers and civilian medical personnel in the event a Wisconsin Guard helicopter is used to transport a critically ill patient.
