Western Australia has a strong pedigree in biomedical innovation. With over 250 biomedical organisations and support services now calling Western Australia home, our industry is rapidly growing.

Funding

Biomedical companies based in or working in Western Australia can benefit from a wide range of funding opportunities and incentives. These include

• The Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, backed by Western Australia’s $1.8B sovereign wealth fund, which provides dedicated long term funding to support health and medical research and innovation.

• The Western Australian Venture Capital Initiative, which will provide Western Australian startups with access to more than $150 million in venture capital funding.

• The R&D Tax Incentive, which allows a recoup of 43.5% of eligible research and development costs including clinical trials.

• Grants for workforce development, market entry advice and attendance at key conferences, through the Western Australian Government’s $8.65m Health and Medical Life Sciences Industry Strategy.

Precision health

Western Australia has significant expertise in precision health, including using oligonucleotides (small RNA) to treat rare diseases, using mRNA to treat cancers, manufacturing advanced cell and gene therapies, substantial ‘-omics’ capabilities and robust disease data sets. Our ecosystem includes national and international leaders in precision health, such as the Australian National Phenome Centre, the international centre of expertise in metabolic phenotyping, and the Rare Care Centre, which provides a world-leading innovative, holistic, crosssector care coordination service for children and their families with rare and undiagnosed diseases.

Manufacturing

Western Australia hosts a range of leading-edge specialist manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, advanced therapy medicinal products, RNA products, medical devices and digital health products.

These include Contract Manufacturing and Development Organisation (CDMO) BioCina, providing sterile liquid pharmaceutical contract manufacturing services at its state of the art facility in Bentley, Perth, with expertise spanning early-stage drug development, full-scale manufacturing, and advanced analytical studies.

Remote health

As the largest single health jurisdiction in the world, Western Australia is developing strong expertise in the development of remote and virtual healthcare infrastructure, products and services.

In doing so, Western Australia is able to draw on its world-leading expertise in remote operations gained through its mining, energy, agriculture, space and defence industries. Health in a Virtual Environment (HIVE) at Royal Perth Hospital remotely monitors high-needs patients in hospitals up to 600 kilometres away, and our WA Country Health Service connects tens of thousands of patients with specialists via videoconferencing each year.

Western Australia also has capability to conduct teletrials across its vast health network.

Clinical trials and CROs

Western Australia has several experienced clinical trials providers, with some of the most advanced clinical trials facilities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Key among these are Linear Clinical Research’s 3 facilities, with on average 70 actively recruiting studies for oncology and a wide range of other therapeutic indications.

Western Australia also hosts a number of experienced Contract Research Organisations (CROs).

Data capabilities

Western Australia hosts two world-class supercomputing facilities, with strong expertise in data science and several key longitudinal health data sets, including the Busselton Health Study, one of the world’s longest running epidemiological studies with nearly 30,000 participants.

Infrastructure

Western Australia hosts a wide range of biomedical infrastructure, with the largest individual site being the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre, a 28Ha campus co-located with a world-leading university, 4 major medical research institutes, 3 hospitals, clinical trials facilities and a range of startup companies. The Western Australian Government is providing support for further growth of our biomedical infrastructure across a number of sites.
