Into the Nest

Teamwork in Bartlett DCP2

Colindale, as an old London community, is often used as a springboard to the city centre. The development of the area has also forced many residents to relocate, and this short-term residential model has led to a gradual loss of sense of belonging among the residents of Colindale.

The Colindale Greenhouse is located in Heybourne Park, serving as a supporting facility for the surrounding community and also a diverse biodiversity reserve. Its characteristic of multi organism symbiosis is similar to the cultural diversity of the Colindale community. Crows are the most representative creatures in the site, because Colindale, as a residential community, has a large amount of household waste, there are forests and water sources in the site, and there are no high-rise buildings or glass structures nearby.

Crows are different from other birds in that they upgrade their nests and establish fixed habitats every year. We hope to apply this model to residents of Colindale, allowing them to participate in the construction of a renewable structure, thereby enhancing their sense of community belonging.

Crows use any locally available materials to build their nests, so each crow nest reflects the cultural characteristics of the nearby community. The Colin Dale community has been in a development stage for a long time, with a large number of construction sites. We use the existing building materials on the site for construction, which not only reduces construction waste but also endows the project with community characteristics.

Develop of joints

The core of this project is not to design the structure, but to guide residents to participate in subsequent construction. Therefore, we studied how to fix different materials and establish physical archives for them. We process the materials in the site and directly use them to construct the joints of the connecting structure.

We envision the initial function as a diverse biological nest, achieving symbiosis between humans and various organisms, and giving back to the essence of the site as a biological reserve. Community residents can design their own subsequent functions and structures.

The guide box is one of the physical archives we have established, which includes joint samples we have built, experiments on discarded material skins, and pigments made from materials such as bricks, soil, and shells. This provides a reference for residents to participate in subsequent construction, and residents can add their achievements to the box to enrich this archive.

We built this structure at the Bartlett autumn show, and we have discussed with the person in charge of Colindale and plan to transfer the device to the Colindale greenhouse to implement the subsequent update strategy.
