01 THE FIVE SENSES MUSEUM Concept: Memory

SOFTWARE USED: Procreate, Sketch Up, In Design, Auto Cad This project is based in Newark Town Wharf where the museum explores the intricate relationship between memory and the senses, drawing inspiration from the idea that memory is both reconstructed and deconstructed throughout life. As we grow, we develop our senses and utilise them to shape our experience of the world. In later years, those senses often begin to fade altering the way memories are recalled or preserved.

Each sensory room is thoughtfully designed to immerse visitors in experiences that evoke, preserve, and activate memory through the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste.

Visitors are guided through a sequence of sensory environments, gradually intensifying their engagement with each of their senses.

The museum features 18 interactive exhibitions, offering reflection, curiosity, and emotional connection.

This marks the beginning of the project, a gateway that symbolically introduces the theme of memory through photography and local history.

Located at the Newark Town Wharf car park, the proposal features a gatehouse structure as the initial phase of a wider civic building scheme.

The design aims to capture and showcase memories by displaying hanging photographs along the walkway, encouraging reflection and connection.

To enhance engagement, the space is envisioned as interactive, inviting visitors to return and experience it in new and meaningful ways.

Inspired by the concept models, the design weaves together different types of memories into a single, captivating form.

Light filters through vibrant, colored glass, casting dynamic reflections across the surfaces North-West Section and creating a magical, evershifting atmosphere.

This fleeting play of light mirrors the nature of memory itself constantly changing, momentary, and never quite the same.

DESIGN THESIS This museum explores the relationship between memory and the senses, inspired by the idea of memories as a gentle glow of the past, shaping emotions, identity, and our perception of the world. Each sensory room is designed to create immersive experiences that evoke, preserve, and engage memory through specific senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste The design reflects the concept of memory as a tapestry or mosaic, where each moment contributes to a greater story. Visitors journey through interconnected sensory spaces that progressively stimulate their senses. Each sense will have four unique rooms.

The proposal has undergone extensive iterative development, exploring a range of massing strategies, roof profiles, and spatial configurations.

The design development process draws on key precedents, including the Kimbell Art Museum, which informed the use of barrel vaulted roof forms to enhance natural light and spatial rhythm, and the Jewish Museum Berlin, which inspired the integration of immersive, sensory driven exhibition spaces that are central to the project’s concept.

Influences have been drawn from the surrounding urban context, including adjacent buildings, listed architectural elements, and infrastructural features such as the nearby bridge.

The canal plays a pivotal role in shaping the project, offering opportunities for rich sensory engagement through sound, reflection, and movement. However, it also presents a significant flood risk. In response, the ground plane has been elevated by 2 metres, establishing a resilient design strategy that mitigates flooding while maintaining a strong visual and experiential connection to the water.

These references have informed both the formal language and material response of the design, ensuring a contextual yet contemporary intervention.

This external courtyard is designed as an immersive sensory landscape, where planting, materiality, and spatial arrangement engage multiple senses simultaneously. Meandering pathways guide movement through textured surfaces, while curved seating arrangements encourage social interaction and moments of pause.

Fragrant planting and seasonal variation stimulate smell, while the soft rustling of vegetation introduces a subtle auditory layer.

Exterior Sensory Garden The internal courtyard is the heart of the museum. A lightweight structural grid allows daylight to penetrate deep into the space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Natural materials such as timber enhance tactile richness, while integrated planting improves wellbeing.

The open-plan arrangement encourages informal gathering.

Sound is softened through vegetation and spatial layering, creating a calm acoustic environment.

Internal Courtyard This landscaped garden centres around water as a key sensory element, engaging sight, sound, and touch.

The fountain introduces a rhythmic auditory backdrop, enhancing the calming atmosphere while masking urban noise. Curved pathways weave through dense planting, encouraging exploration and varied perspectives of the space. Seating areas are strategically positioned to create social interaction.

02 SITES OF HYBRIDITY Harmony

SOFTWARE USED: Sketch up, Procreate, Autocad, Indesign, Enscape In this project, we are designing a hybrid housing proposal in Ilkeston on different parts of the site and they must include a creative art of choice. Music was chosen for the creative housing proposal. These creative spaces will have accessible areas on the ground floor, outdoor spaces for occasional events making them lively and inviting for the public.

This proposal includes housing suitable for various residents, from individuals to families. Sustainability has been considered by using insulation, positioning windows and roofs for solar benefits, incorporating solar power options, and choosing materials wisely whilst refering to the RIBA Sustainable Outcomes.

CONCEPT MODELS

Concept models inspired by unity, harmony and connection. I aim for the building to prioritise human well being, safety, and community engagement by the use of thoughtful integration of green spaces, pedestrian-friendly layouts, and inclusive community gathering areas.

Collage of site visit During the site visit, it became evident that the space lacked effective strategies to facilitate interaction between people and their environment.

The absence of well defined physical connections such as pathways, bridges, and communal areas limits movement and reduces opportunities for social engagement within the urban fabric.

FLOOR PLANS Community allotments designed to promote sustainable crop cultivation, integrated within a spacious, secure outdoor environment exclusively accessible to local residents.

All residential units have been thoughtfully designed to balance privacy, intimacy, and opportunities for social interaction, responding sensitively to the diverse needs of occupants.

The incorporation of fire-rated doors and protected corridor systems ensures full compliance with fire safety regulations, supporting safe and efficient evacuation strategies.

This floor plan demonstrates a clear and efficient spatial hierarchy, with a strong distinction between public, semi private, and private zones.

A generous external open space, strategically framed by expansive glazing within adjacent buildings to maximise natural daylight and enhance visual connectivity to the surrounding landscape.

Bedrooms are positioned along this corridor to ensure acoustic separation and a greater sense of privacy, while maintaining functional proximity to shared sanitary spaces.

03 RUDIN HOUSE Study

SOFTWARE USED: InDesign, Revit, Rhino, Illustrator This project explores the Rubin House through industry-standard architectural software, focusing on 3D modeling, detailed drawings, and axonometric illustrations. The coursework involves creating a Revit model to produce precise floor plans, sections, and elevations, alongside developing a Rhino model for an exploded axonometric drawing, refined in Illustrator.

04 ADDITONAL SKILLS Imagine Series: Crystal Springs

SOFTWARE USED: InDesign, V-ray, Photoshop, Sketch up This project focuses on developing a high quality architectural visualisation involving translating provided floor plans and external views into a detailed 3D model using SketchUp, followed by rendering realistic internal and external visuals with V-Ray. The final output is presented in a professional portfolio created in InDesign, highlighting the design process, modeling techniques, and rendering details.
