Palmer Family Collection (lots 1-112)
Christie’s is delighted to present the final chapter of the Palmer Family Collection, comprising 112 lots of painted enamels, imperial porcelain, cloisonné works of art, jade carvings, famille verte and famille rose ceramics, dating from the Song dynasty (960-1279) to the Republic period (1912-1949). This distinguished legacy was assembled by three generations of the family that founded the Reading-based company Huntley & Palmers that rose to international prominence as “The Most Famous Biscuit Company in the World.”
The collection was started by W. Howard Palmer (18651923), great-grandfather to the current owners, and his wife Ada (1870-1953), pictured. It then passed to their only son, Reginald Howard Reed (R.H.R.) Palmer (1898-1970), who, with his wife Lena (1900-1981), also pictured, started
collecting themselves upon their marriage in 1924, and added the greatest number of pieces to the collection in the first half of the 20th century.
We are fortunate to find that both W. Howard and Reginald Palmer kept ledgers with detailed entries for each of their purchases. As a result, the collection has exceptional provenance with the majority of works acquired in London from renowned dealers such as Spink & Son, John Sparks, Bluetts, Yamanaka, Malletts and C.T. Loo. Many pieces were also lent to seminal museum exhibitions organised by the Oriental Ceramic Society in the UK in the first half of the 20th century. The R.H.R. Palmer collection is offered for sale by the fourth generation of the Palmer family following previous auctions held at Christie’s Hong Kong in 2023 and 2024.

The four birds on this dish are Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus), . These are auspicious birds –symbolising happiness and the arrival of spring, and while they are less common on porcelains, sparrows, often shown with bamboo, have been a favoured subject for Chinese painters on silk and, later, paper since Song times. Bird and flower painting continued to flourish into the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, with sparrows and bamboo continuing to provide inspiration for Chinese artists on silk and paper to the end of the Qing and into the Republic period.
The admiration of the Yongzheng emperor for fine bird and flower painting on imperial porcelain can be seen from the range of bird and flower depictions on falangcai vessels preserved in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei. Many examples were illustrated in the
exhibition catalogue Special Exhibition of Ch’ing Dynasty Enamelled Porcelains of the Imperial Ateliers , Taipei, 1992 including a bowl (no. 25) and a small cup (no. 71), both decorated with sparrows.
The black back of this famille rose dish is extremely rare. A pair of black-backed Yongzheng-marked dishes of exactly the same size is in the Zhuyuetang collection (illustrated in A Millennium of Monochromes from the Great Tang to the High Qing – The Baur and the Zhuyuetang Collections, Geneva, 2018, pp. 260-1, nos. 114 a & b; and in Shimmering Colours – Monochromes of the Yuan to Qing Periods – The Zhuyuetang Collection, Hong Kong, 2005, p. 236, no. 158). The Zhuyuetang dishes also have famille rose decoration on the interior, and sixcharacter marks on the base in underglaze blue.

Early Ming dynasty Buddhist gilt-metal sculptures are famed for their exceptional quality as exemplified by this magnificent figure of Shakyamuni Buddha. During the Yongle (1402-1424) and Xuande (1425-1435) reigns, Chinese imperial workshops produced refined gilt bronze sculptures in a distinct style. As with the present example, these imperial commissions were used to strengthen secular and religious alliances with Tibet, by being gifted to Tibetan hierarchs and monasteries.
This iconographic form in which the historical Buddha is seated with his right hand in the earth-touching position, bhumisparshamudra, recalls a momentous episode from his spiritual biography in which he triumphs over Mara just prior to his enlightenment. Having vowed to remain in meditation until he penetrated the mystery of existence, Shakyamuni was visited by Mara, a demon associated with the veils and distractions of mundane existence. The Buddha remained unmoved by all the pleasant and unpleasant distractions with which Mara sought to deflect him from his goal.
According to some traditional accounts, Mara’s final assault consisted of an attempt to undermine the bodhisattva’s sense of worthiness by questioning Shakyamuni’s entitlement to seek the lofty goal of spiritual enlightenment and the consequent freedom from rebirth. Aided by spirits who reminded him of the countless compassionate efforts
he had made on behalf of sentient beings throughout his numerous animal and human incarnations, Shakyamuni recognised that it was his destiny to be poised on the threshold of enlightenment. In response to Mara’s query, Shakyamuni moved his right hand from the meditation position in his lap and touched the ground stating ‘the earth is my witness’. This act of unwavering resolve caused Mara and his army of demons and temptresses to disperse, leaving Shakyamuni to experience his great enlightenment. The episode took place at the adamantine throne, vajrasana, beneath the bhodi tree at Bodh Gaya, eastern India, a location said to have been especially empowered to expedite the Buddha’s enlightenment.
Closely-related examples include the gilt-bronze Xuandemarked figure of Buddha (27.7 cm. high) gifted by Miss Lucy T. Aldrich to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number: 52.1844, which is nearly identical in style but with extensive wear to the gilding; and the cast brass seated figure of Shakyamuni (29 cm. high), 15th-16th century, from the Chang Foundation illustrated in Buddhist Images in Gilt Metal, Taipei, 1993, p. 22, Fig. 4.

Auspicious symbolism permeates this piece, in keeping with the broader decorative language of the Qianlong court. The crane (he), emblematic of immortality and longevity, was a favored imperial motif and a frequent companion of Shoulao, the God of Longevity. This imagery had deep roots in the Chinese artistic tradition, tracing back to the Northern Song dynasty, when Emperor Huizong (1082–1135) himself painted the celebrated handscroll Auspicious Cranes. The motif was later revitalized within the Qing court, appearing in works by the Jesuit painter Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), whose refined depictions of cranes embodied both Chinese symbolism and Western naturalism. The inclusion of the lotus, one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), further enriches the iconography, symbolizing purity and spiritual perfection.
Comparable examples of cloisonné enamel incense burners supported by cranes and adorned with similar dragon-form handles are recorded. A related pair, also dated to the Qianlong period, was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 4 December 2008, lot 202. Another pair, featuring upright cloisonné enamel handles, is preserved in the British Museum, London (registration number: 1931,0414.1-2). For a further related example, see H. Brinker and A. Lutz, Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection, New York, 1989, pl. 323. A comparable pair, closely related to the British Museum example, was sold at Sotheby’s New York, 18 March 2014, lot 359.

The term wugong (“five-piece garniture”) refers to a ritual assemblage comprising an incense burner, a pair of candlesticks, and a pair of flower vases (huagu). These vessels, used respectively for the offering of incense, light, and flowers, formed the most common configuration of altar furnishings in the Qing imperial court.
The combination first appeared in Daoist tombs of the Yuan dynasty and became widespread in Buddhist and Daoist temples as well as imperial mausolea during the Ming period. Under the Qing dynasty, wugong sets were produced in a range of materials, with cloisonné enamel examples particularly favored at the imperial court. Their popularity was such that certain porcelain garnitures were later modelled after cloisonné prototypes.
Complete altar garnitures with matching decoration are exceedingly rare. A closely related cloisonné enamel five-piece garniture bearing Qianlong marks, similarly decorated with scrolling lotus motifs, is preserved in the Palace Museum Collection and illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum – Enamels, vol. 3, no. 6. See also a garniture of comparable size and design illustrated by H. Brinker and A. Lutz in Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection, The Asia Society Galleries, New York, 1989, no. 267; another similar example was sold at Sotheby’s New York, 31 March 2005, lot 240. As evidenced by the records of the Qing dynasty and the enormous size of the imperial collections, there was an intense interest in Chinese antiquities at the imperial court reflected in the commissioning of pieces in archaic styles during the eighteenth century. This certainly pertained to jades that were made in a broad range of archaic styles during the reign of the Qianlong emperor, who had a passion for jade and preferred those of ancient type, not only those that directly imitated jades of earlier date but also jades that alluded to the antique without directly copying. Many of the pieces he commissioned are inscribed fanggu (to imitate the ancient).
The present vase is of the second type. The shape appears to be based on fuller-bodied bronze hu of late Warring States date, such as the chain-handled hu from Hubei Jiangling, of late fourth-third century BC date, illustrated by Jenny So in Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, vol. III, Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, 1995, p. 287, fig. 51.3. Like the present jade vase, the bronze hu has a pair of mask and loose-ring handles flanking the shoulder and has mask and ring handles on the lower body, although there appear to be four rather than two.
The Qianlong six-character fanggu mark (Qianlong made in imitation of the original) on the Irving vase indicates that it was one of the special group of jade vessels which were inspired by ancient bronze forms and were inscribed with this mark. Larger jade vases of this type, most of hu shape, have been published. Two in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Yang Boda, ed., Chinese Jades Throughout the Ages - Connoisseurship of Chinese Jades, vol. 12, Qing Dynasty, Chinese Art Foundation, 1997, pls. 39 and 40, have the more typical shape of bronze hu of Han dynasty date. The first, pl. 39, of white jade, has plain raised bands encircling the shoulder and lower body and a pair of mask handles suspending loose rings flanking the neck. The second, pl. 40, is carved with raised borders enclosing a band of kui dragons on the neck and two bands of fish, birds and turtles encircling the shoulder and body. The arrangement of the pair of mask and loose-ring handles flanking the neck and the pair on the lower body is similar to that seen on the Irving vase. The mark on both of these vases is similar to that on the present vase. Another large hu-shaped vase, also carved with bands of birds, turtles and fish, and with similarly positioned handles, but with a fourcharacter Qianlong fanggu mark, is illustrated by Roger Keverne, Jade, New York, 1991, p. 181, fig. 132. This magnificent and very large sw-glazed horse, with its lustrous chestnut coat and cream mane and tail, is distinguished both by its striking coloration and by the refined detailing of its trappings. A comparable arrangement of shortened stirrups and a knotted saddle cloth appears on a smaller, cold-painted horse standing with one hoof raised, excavated in 1987 from a Tang dynasty tomb at Luoyang, Henan, and illustrated in The Silk Road – Treasures of Tang China, Empress Place, Singapore, 1991, p. 72. Another example, a smaller horse with predominantly blue sancai glaze and a more loosely knotted saddle cloth, was excavated in 1965 at Luoyang and published in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daquan: Taoci juan, Taipei, 1993, p. 150, no. 521. Like the present piece, that example also features tassels hanging from its breast and tail straps. A further related glazed horse with a similarly knotted saddle cloth is illustrated by Li Zhiyan in Zhongguo youtao yishu, Hong Kong, 1989, pl. 189. A bound saddle cloth and elegantly arched hogged mane, comparable to those of the present figure, can also be seen on a smaller sancai-glazed horse in the Tenri Museum, Japan, published by Masahiko Satō and Gakuji Hasebe (eds.), Sekai toji zenshu, vol. 11, Tokyo, 1976, p. 150, no. 139.
The horse has long held a central place in Chinese life and art. As early as the Pleistocene epoch, the animal now known as the Przewalski horse roamed the steppelands of northern China, where horses have remained integral to daily and cultural life. Domestication likely began in the Neolithic period, from which the earliest artistic depictions of horses also date. Numerous representations of horses appear among Neolithic and Bronze Age cave paintings from Inner Mongolia and Gansu province, while lifelike stone carvings of horses have been discovered at Bronze Age sites such as Bayan Urad in Dengkou county, Inner Mongolia, including one depicting a mounted rider.
From these early beginnings, the Chinese artistic and spiritual fascination with the horse flourished. Horses were esteemed not only for riding and transport but also as indispensable animals of war. Their use in chariots and cavalry profoundly influenced China’s military history. The deeply rooted belief in the afterlife, and the custom of providing tomb furnishings to ensure comfort and prestige beyond death, have preserved abundant evidence of the horse’s enduring symbolic and practical importance in ancient China.
Among the most celebrated of all Chinese ceramic sculptures are the sancai-glazed horses made for the tombs of the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) elite. Representing wealth, power, and imperial grandeur, such figures emphasized the status of the tomb occupant. Beyond their association with war and transport, these horses also evoke
the leisure pursuits of the Tang court, most notably polo, a sport enjoyed by both men and women and actively promoted by the emperors Taizong and Xuanzong for its cultivation of martial skills. The horses depicted are the revered “blood-sweating” Ferghana steeds, introduced from Central Asia during the Han dynasty and celebrated for their speed, strength, and endurance: qualities vividly captured by Tang ceramic sculptors.
Tang sancai horses were either adorned with the brilliant tri-colored glazes characteristic of the period, as in the present example, or left unglazed and cold-painted. Both approaches achieved remarkable realism and vitality. The sancai technique, in particular, produced enduringly vibrant colors that accentuate the animal’s powerful physique and intricate molded trappings. The present figure stands as a superb example of this celebrated artistic tradition.
