EThe future of vehicle repairability

Hardships techs may face as manufacturers try to cut costs.

arly in April, I attended the Equipment and Tool Institute’s ToolTech event. The day one keynote speaker, Steve Greenfield of Automotive Ventures, spoke on many key topics in the automotive industry, including vehicle repairability.

Greenfield walked the audience through how the future of vehicle repairability could pan out from the manufacturers’, consumers’, and technicians’ sides.

THE MANUFACTURER

The manufacturer is constantly looking for ways to improve the production process. They’re looking to cut costs and produce a better, more efficient vehicle. Take a Tesla, for example, in earlier iterations of the Tesla, its frame was composed of 150 components. Looking at newer models, the frame consists of three components. They’ve moved toward mega- and giga-casting, explains Greenfield.

Consolidating components like this can make for a lighter vehicle, and in electric vehicles, lighter means more efficient. On the other hand, if this

vehicle gets into an accident, the cost of repairs goes up because there’s no longer just a quarter panel of the frame to pull off and replace.

THE CONSUMER

For the consumer, this seems like a good idea because lower production costs mean a lower cost for the vehicle. However, the potential insurance costs on a vehicle that must have the majority of its frame replaced if it’s in an accident could negate the initial cost savings. Additionally, paying for the repairs if that vehicle is in an accident could be just as costly as replacing the vehicle altogether.

THE TECHNICIAN

Following this example, shops will end up spending more time performing the repairs, and the cost of the repairs will increase due to the longer repair times and the higher cost of the replacement part. Overall though, this will likely lead to shops writing the vehicle off entirely. After the accident, it will be a total vehicle loss.

“So the punchline here is insurance rates have started to accelerate …”

Greenfield says, “… there has to be a reconciliation at some point when [the manufacturers] feel the pain that their cars are no longer competitive at the dealership because consumers are coming in and they’re like ‘I can’t afford the insurance on this car,’ then [the OEs] will have to go back, and that will reflect on the manufacturing processes.”

It’s a bit of a vicious cycle, and it’s too soon to know for sure how this will all pan out. What are your thoughts on the future of repairability?

Finding your diagnostic process

Your diagnostic process should start at the counter rather than in the bay.

Finding your diagnostic process is critical to achieving success with vehicle service and repair. In this article, I will share many of the proven processes I have found to be successful. Some of these processes you may already be practicing, and some may provide you with a novel approach.

1. PRELIMINARY STEPS

Customer interview: Gather information about the vehicle’s symptoms and what led up to their existence, the history of service or repairs that may have induced such conditions, and any recent changes or events, such

as extreme weather, flooding, etc., that might correlate with the current issues. For example, recently in my shop, a vehicle arrived with a complaint of many warning lights illuminated on the instrument cluster. These lights came on when the client noticed that the transmission failed to upshift after leaving a stop.

With this information, the technician began their investigation, which started with a road test to evaluate the transmission’s current state of performance. After observing normal operation, a complete vehicle health scan was performed. While examining the fault codes, we could see that the transmission control module was a source of reporting errors, which resulted in

multiple modules reporting faults and annunciating via the instrument cluster. Keep in mind that since many vehicles today are equipped with active safety systems supporting driver assistance, if there are any errors in any other propulsion systems, those active safety systems will default to an inoperative condition. This is why this vehicle had the eyesight, rear automatic braking system, and other warnings illuminated.

The next step the technician took was to see if there were any applicable technical service bulletins, which there were. Following this bulletin carefully, it had a series of logical steps, such as checking the condition of the transmission fluid along with the appropriate fill level. Several other checks were

p Figure 1 - Underhood inspection
Photos courtesy of Scott Brown

also included, which ultimately resulted in a no-problem-found condition. A second interview with the client, who happened to be riding as a passenger when this problem surfaced, resulted in more information. He stated that the driver came to a stop at a light with the vehicle partially protruding into a pedestrian crosswalk. The driver placed the transmission into reverse and slowly backed the vehicle up. However, the driver failed to place the transmission back into drive. When the light turned green, the driver began to depress the throttle and observed the vehicle going backwards, and they quickly moved the shifter out of reverse and attempted to move into drive, but landed in neutral. After a couple of throttle depresses with the rpm reaching remarkably high, the transmission was then shifted into drive, and the vehicle jerked forward. This is when the transmission failed to upshift, resulting in numerous warning lights appearing on the instrument cluster.

As you can see, this additional information would’ve been extremely helpful if it had been discovered during intake.

2 .V ISUAL INSPECTION

A visual inspection often can surface other service opportunities and potential sources of trouble. Vehicles that have numerous faults that you would categorize as extremely abnormal would call for a close inspection for evidence of the vehicle being involved in a flood. In fact, one such vehicle arrived in our service facility not long ago with numerous complaints that had us puzzled out of the gate. The vehicle was a 2019 RAM 1500 that was towed in as a nocrank, no-start; the client reported that the condition occurred while driving through a car wash.

This is what the write-up said: Reason for customer’s visit: Customer towed vehicle in. Customer states the vehicle is in a no-crank, no-start condition, and it is a salvaged title. The cus -

tomer states that he drove the vehicle through a drive-through car wash, and the vehicle lost all power. The vehicle has been sitting for a month. The customer states that the wiring harness was replaced at the dealership back in 2021. This past year, the check engine light would turn on and off intermittently. A notification for the power lock system would illuminate as well. The customer noticed that if he drove the truck in the rain and hit a puddle of water, the vehicle would start to have electrical issues. Analyze and advise on repairs.

When we initially opened the hood for a visual inspection, we found a large tarp covering the back half of the engine, apparently to prevent water intrusion. (Figure 1)

After performing a walk-around inspection of the vehicle, followed by a flashlight inspection under the seats and under the dash, we could see straightforward evidence that this vehicle was involved in a flood. (Figure 2)

The next step we took was to search the Internet using the VIN, where we quickly found that the auction sale of this vehicle was at a total loss because of a flood somewhere else in the country approximately four years ago. This is where our journey stopped, and as you can see, it saved us a ton of time, allowing us to move on to more prosperous work.

Often when we have a vehicle in for a diagnostic that we have not seen before, we will sell a service that includes a comprehensive vehicle inspection. And in some cases, this inspection may be offered at no charge. In my shop, this does not mean that the technician is working for free. Performing a systematic inspection allows us to leverage the power of our shop management system to build out estimates to resolve any inspection deficiencies. These deficiencies are often documented with images and data to back up such findings.

Exterior check: Look for signs of

collision damage, fluid leaks, or wear on components like tires, suspension, lighting systems, etc.

Under-hood inspection: Fluid level and condition checks, fluid leaks, loose belts, or hoses, battery cables, evidence of rodents, etc.

Interior check: Assess dashboard warning lights to ensure that all the proper lights illuminate during bulb check mode, check for unusual smells, and inspect the condition of upholstery or dash components, which might indicate electrical or HVAC issues, or, as mentioned earlier, evidence of water intrusion. Although many under-hood electrical connectors have weather protection, that doesn’t mean that they’re immune to water intrusion. With interior connections, not all connectors have weather protection. As you should be aware, moisture leads to corrosion, and intermittent electrical conductivity conditions can wreak havoc on today’s systems, especially when it comes to network communications.

3. BASIC CHECKS

Fluid levels: Inspect engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and washer fluid. Note color, consistency, and level, as these can indicate issues like coolant leaks or transmission problems.

p Figure 2 - Dash water evidence inspection

Battery and charging system inspection: Check the date code on the battery; most today begin to surface failures after three years. Corrosion around the battery can lead to other faults down the road. In fact, many faults today often stem back to the basics, and that begins with a sound electrical system, which starts at the battery. (Figure 3)

4. FULL VEHICLE SCAN

Health check: Many of the scan tools on the market today can produce a vehicle-wide full scan, which can be very enlightening. In fact, many of the faults that modules record do not necessarily result in annunciation to the operator; therefore, they have no clue that these faults exist. As you can imagine, this alone can help the consumer steer clear of failures down the road.

5. DIAGNOSTIC CORRELATION

DTC to symptom mapping: As mentioned in the beginning with our “no-

upshift” vehicle, many of the faults stem back to other modules reporting and/ or requesting other modules to report faults. Today’s diagnostic tech needs to possess the skills to rationalize how these systems work together in concert to handle vehicle failure modes. One technique you may want to consider is creating a “mind map” that may allow

you to link together probabilities. Today, there is one vehicle manufacturer that I’m aware of that has such a tool inside its diagnostic application. Tesla has a section within their diagnostic toolbox called Sandbox.

This tool allows you to add current vehicle system faults and see how they correlate to other faults, which are often linked to technical documents that may uncover potential inspection points along with the resolutions. Look for future technical articles covering this topic in depth. (Figure 4)

Mileage correlation: Consider time or mileage-based maintenance items that may have been overlooked and/ or timed out. Catching up on maintenance can sometimes resolve drivability problems.

6. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDATIONS

Using manufacturer guidelines: Reference the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule to tailor recommendations, ensuring they align with warranty and service expectations. Beware, in some cases, you may not find recommendations for services that would logically support long vehicle life. For example, transmission and drivetrain fluid services may be recommended, but their intervals are often

found to be excessive, in my opinion. You, as a service professional, should establish recommendations based on your experience. In my service facility, we are seeing more and more Tesla vehicles, and we are finding that the drive units, aka traction motors, aka electric machines, don’t have a fluid change interval recommendation from the manufacturer.

We are finding that at around 50,000 miles, the drive unit fluid is extremely dark. On dual motor vehicles where the rear permanent magnet drive motor is the one with a higher duty cycle, we’re finding its fluid much darker than the fluid that gets drained out of the front induction motor unit. Both units have spin-on oil filters and require special fluid. You will also find a special process needed to properly fill these drive units, which involves operating the oil pump

to dynamically fill the drive unit. We are now recommending fluid changes well ahead of 50,000 miles.

7. DOCUMENTATION AND REPORTING

Record keeping: Document all findings. As mentioned earlier, our shop

management system allows us to clearly document all inspection items and maintain those records for future reference.

Customer communication: Clearly explain findings, potential causes, and the rationale behind recommended repairs or maintenance. Use simple lan-

guage or visual aids if necessary. There are many visual aids available, such as MotoVisuals (Figure 5), which is what we use in our shop. The automobile is a complex machine, and this application and its animations make it a great educational tool and ultimately help us to maintain the client’s vehicle.

8. FOLLOW-UP

Post-repair verification: After service and repair, one should extensively road test the vehicle and exercise the systems on the vehicle. In some cases, recording vehicle data showing a return to nominal values can go a long way in establishing professionalism and credibility. In some cases, a single repair doesn’t necessarily mean that all vehicle symptoms will be eliminated. (Figure 6) Post-repair verification analytics can help to prove that your repairs are moving the vehicle in a positive direction.

9. QUALITY CONTROL - QC

QC should exist at every step, work orders should have an inspection line for communication. The checks required for one of our job packages include the fluid levels, wiper system, air filters, and more.

In our facility, every work order has a quality control step that must be completed before we are allowed to close a work order. Most, if not all, drivabilityrelated repairs will include an extensive road test with recorded vehicle data. This provides us with a method to obtain data showing proper vehicle operation and is often used to complete OBD-II monitors and document these. As you are aware, many vehicles with permanent DTCs need to be driven so that the diagnostics internal of the ECM can be run so that these permanent DTCs will self-clear.

Overall, by following the steps withiin this article, it can lead to improved customer satisfaction and demonstrate technical proficiency and overall service professionalism. This goes a long way towards building strong credibility for you and your profession.

Maximizing productivity with hybrid vehicle services

Discover essential tips and tools for efficient and profitable servicing of hybrid vehicles.

IWhen you take the time to break down how a hybrid vehicle works, it's not as difficult as it may seem.

f you are anything like me, you do not like to turn away any vehicle that comes to your shop for service, even if it is a hybrid vehicle. Customers will call my shop all the time and ask, “Do you work on hybrid vehicles?” Of course, I respond with, “Absolutely.” Why wouldn’t we? They say, “Oh, thank God. I called three other shops, and they said they do not service hybrid vehicles.” If you have a shop or work in a shop that turns away hybrid vehicles, I have some good news for you. In this article, I am going to share some tips and tricks that

will help you become more efficient and profitable when serving HVs.

HOW A HYBRID VEHICLE WORKS

Like any vehicle, we have to understand what we are up against. Let’s get started with some basics. How do HVs work? Simply put, HVs utilize a gasoline-powered engine coupled with an electric motor that propels the vehicle to move. It is as simple as that. Now, we all know how a vehicle’s charging system works. HVs are very similar, where they take one form of electric-

ity and convert it into another form that drives the electric motor while at the same time recharging the vehicle’s battery and operating the vehicle’s electrical components. Now that we have some basics out of the way, let’s look at some ways we can make HV repair more efficient and profitable. Oh, and of course, safe as well.

SAFETY FIRST

Starting off with safety, there are many different tools to help keep you safe when you are servicing HVs. The number one, and by far the most important,

p

tool of them all is ... your brain! As long as we stay aware and understand what we are working on, that can help keep us safe, along with the appropriate PPE, of course. As we see in Figure 1, we have some of the safety tools used when servicing HVs, which include insulated gloves, insulated hand tools, and a minimum Matco CAT 3 DVOM. Insulated gloves will keep you safe from any arcing and risk of being shocked if you hap-

 Figure 1 — While working on hybrid vehicles, you'll need the appropriate PPE to stay safe, which includes insulated gloves, insulated hand tools, and a CAT 3-rated DVOM, to name a few.

pen to touch a live high voltage circuit. A CAT 3-rated multimeter is designed to withstand high-voltage inputs and has arc protection capabilities. These tools are specifically designed to help keep us safe while servicing HVs.

Now the real fun begins. It is time to dig into servicing HVs. Have you had an HV that would not stay running while you are trying to diagnose it? I know I have experienced this, and it can be very frustrating. The good news is that there is a way to deal with this annoying feature while servicing HVs. Putting the vehicle into a feature called Service Mode will keep the engine running while trying to diagnose it and allow the vehicle to idle for an extended period of time. The procedure to put these vehicles into Service Mode is kind of like putting a cheat code into a video game from back in the day. (Depending on what era you grew up in, of course.) Let’s look at an example. On a 2015 Toyota Prius, I executed this procedure: Put the vehicle into the accessory position, depress the accelerator

pedal twice, shift to park, and depress the accelerator pedal twice again. Now you can see my reference to the video game cheat codes (Figure 2). This is a good lesson here about how important it is to have the ability to reference service information. This procedure will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so make sure you check how to do this for whatever vehicle you are working on.

HANDLING HIGH VOLTAGE

Moving on, we will get into disconnecting and isolating the high voltage battery. All HVs will have a service plug that can be taken out and will isolate the high voltage battery cables (Figure 3). This will allow you to safely service the vehicle in the areas where high voltage is present.

We will take a look at different manufacturers’ procedures to disconnect the service plug. We always want to use our CAT 3-rated multimeter and check for any voltage, present at the service plug connector.

As seen in Figure 4, we have a 2015

Hyundai Sonata 2.4L hybrid’s service plug location. There is not much to it: Disconnect the vehicle’s 12V battery, then locate the service plug and pull it out. Always wait 10 minutes after removing the service plug; this will allow all the capacitors inside the inverter to drain, making it safe to continue with service.

REPLACING A HYBRID BATTERY

For the final service tip, we will look at a procedure demonstrating the replacement of a hybrid battery in a 2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L hybrid. As we discussed above, first, we’ll reference service information – in this case, I’m using ALLDATA – to find out the location of the service plug. Next, we will disconnect the 12V battery cables. Now, using our HV-insulated safety tools, we

access the service plug and disconnect it. We can then wait our 10 minutes to allow the capacitors to drain. From this point, we can safely remove the HV battery assembly from the vehicle. Once you are able to do one HV, you should be able to do any of the different makes and models.

Another important aspect of servicing HVs is the ability to accurately and efficiently diagnose different issues within the hybrid drive system. As long as you have a basic understanding of how an automotive electrical system works, then you will have no problem diagnosing the hybrid system. All the same principles apply as the 12V system, the only difference is that we are dealing with a higher voltage level. By referencing wiring diagrams, we can understand how the system we are dealing with functions. HV systems are very code-driven due to the advanced monitoring of all of the systems. This means we can use the trouble codes as a great diagnostic direction while troubleshooting different faults. Scan tools are also very useful when it comes to diagnosing HVs. For example, if an HVs battery’s state of charge becomes lower than 20 percent, certain models will disable starting. When this happens, a function on the scan tool called “Force Start” can be used to force the vehicle to start to charge the hybrid battery.

To wrap up, I hope this article helped you see that servicing HVs is not as hard as it seems. Like I said earlier, turning away vehicles does not sit well with me. We are professionals in the field of repairing automotive vehicles and should be able to service all vehicles, no matter how sophisticated the systems on the vehicles become. My goal in this article was to show a simplistic way of looking at a rather complicated system and the tools and equipment used to help aid the industry into servicing hybrid vehicles rather than turning them away. We can also take some of these tips and apply them to non-hybrid vehicles. A lot of the skills displayed in this article are universal across the automotive repair realm. Cheers to more vehicles and more profits coming into your shop or bay!

Coast Colter Pro Multi-Tool, No. MTC350

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: Having a quality multi-tool available for EDC while at work allows me to get tasks done faster, keeping me from having to stop what I am doing to look for a knife, pliers, etc.

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: A multi-tool is all about basic tool access — having what you need available and available quickly. Having what you need on you so you don’t have to stop and search means you can get more done.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: Easy, but the Phillips screwdriver could use a fingernail groove to aid in tool access.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Coast Colter Pro Multi-Tool, No. MTC350, has a rugged stainless steel frame with a lightweight aluminum overlay. The tool measures 4” and only weighs 7.76 oz, and its integrated carabiner makes it even easier to use as an everyday carry. The Colter Pro includes locking blades, spring-loaded pliers, a wood saw, a wire cutter, Phillips and standard screwdrivers, a bottle opener, a wire stripper, and a can opener. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55285487

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: Packaging was typical for the product type. No accessories were included or needed due to the nature of the product.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The spring-loaded pliers allow easy one-handed manipulation. Both the knife blade and the saw were easily opened with one hand. The knife was sharp out of the box, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it held an edge with heavy use.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: I personally use a multi-tool as just part of my EDC, so for me, the carabiner clip was of little value and got caught up on my pockets. If I were to purchase one, I would select a model without it, but if I were in a trade where I carried a tool or medical bag, or even for putting on a backpack for hiking or camping, I can see where the carabiner clip would be a nice plus.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: Typical EDC-type activities, lots of unboxing products at work and home, and the knife got heavy use. The wire cutters came in handy for cutting zipties and pallet strapping. The pliers were used extensively. They were handy for pulling wire as well as for holding small fasteners while tightening locknuts.

Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I have not used a Coast multi-tool before, but I was very impressed with the quality, especially at the price point. Its quality rivals some much higherpriced competitors in the multi-tool market.

Q: Is there anything you had questions or concerns about in regard to the tool?

A: The wire cutters could be sharper, and the aforementioned difficulty accessing the Phillips screwdriver attachment.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: Nine — overall, I was very impressed with the quality, especially at the price point it’s sold at. A solid multi-tool that performed well and looks like it will hold up to years of use.

A : I have owned every iteration of the Maximus line. This device blows them and all other “comparable” tools out of the water.

Q: Is there anything you had questions or concerns about in regard to the tool?

A: I was worried the screen would scratch and chip, but this thing seems to be made out of some sort of diamond-type glass.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: 10. This allows me to work very efficiently.

INNOVATION AWA RDS PROFILE

Streamlight Color-Rite

Q&A with Streamlight National Accounts Manager for the Automotive and Hardware Division, Mark Rowe.

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A: The Stinger Color-Rite is all about seeing colors accurately, which is a game-changer for auto techs. While a high lumen product's ultra-bright beam is needed in most applications, it prevents subtle color differences, particularly in dark areas and in wiring and stuff like that. The Stinger Color-Rite uses 90 CRI, or color rendering index, LED, so you’re seeing the color spectrum as it appears in natural sunlight. This allows the tech to more accurately tell the difference between similar shades when paint matching, spot body, or identifying wiring.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: Well, the number one inspiration was that it was actually designed for Border Patrol ... but it was also built for the techs in mind, we wanted to make sure that it makes their jobs easier and work more efficiently and more accurately. We heard from a lot of techs about the standard LED sometimes being too bright, too harsh on color-critical work. Trying to match auto paint for fine detailing, our super bright white beams made it harder to see and washed out the paint. So the Streamlight Color-Rite gives it a warmer, more natural light, similar to sunlight.

Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners who use it?

A: For starters, it saves time and prevents mistakes when you can see the colors accurately. You’re not second-guessing yourself when matching paint or diagnosing electrical issues. This means better results the first time. It’s also a huge help when working in low-light areas, whether under the hood or wheel wells or underneath the dashboard. Eye fatigue is a real issue, especially for technicians working long shifts. The softer and warmer light helps reduce glare and strain, so they can work more efficiently for longer periods.

Q: What’s the feedback been like from the technicians who have used this tool?

A: The response has been pretty positive. Techs say that the biggest thing is that it makes color matching much easier,

and some of them told us it became their go-to light for everything, paint correction to wire repair, so they use it for numerous things. A lot of people love the durability. They don’t have to worry about it breaking if it gets knocked off the workbench or dropped on the floor. It’s durable, and they appreciate the different brightnesses ... The rechargeable battery is another big win. It’s cost-effective and convenient compared to constantly swapping out batteries, which is also more time-consuming, and it fits in all existing Stinger chargers.

Q: Is there anything else that our readers should know?

A: We’re really proud of the Stinger Color-Rite ... If color accuracy is important to you, this is one of the highest CRI lights that we offer. We also offer the Dualie, Syclone, FlipMate, Strion Swichblade, and Stinger Switchblade, and they also carry the Color-Rite technology. Streamlight’s been making tough, reliable lights for over 50 years, and we always focus on helping professionals do their job better, faster, and safer.

Tool storage done his way

Salazar's wall of Milwaukee Tool PACKOUT products offer him flexible tool storage solutions.

At the beginning of 2025, Felipe Salazar Jr. upgraded his previous toolbox setup to one with more modular capabilities.

MOVING TO MODULAR

As is the age-old tale of many technicians, Salazar was running out of space in his previous toolbox and had to decide what features were essential for the next evolution of his tool storage. The new setup features a 56” by 22” double-bank toolbox, a 27” steel locker, and a 36” by 22” tool cart, all from Milwaukee Tool. Salazar has also put together a Milwaukee PACKOUT wall that sits above his toolbox for additional storage.

Many factors went into the refinish technician’s decision to choose this setup. Though his current work centers around painting vehicles, in the past, Salazar worked as a combo tech,

Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

meaning he can also perform collision work. Because of his dual abilities, he keeps tools that allow him to perform either job, making extra storage space a must. Salazar is also a content creator (check out his Instagram @dirtnib_fil), so aesthetics is also a factor.

"I’m a content creator,” Salazar says, "so it’s a lot of the visual too. I wanted something that would stand out. And red really stands out."

A FEW OF HIS FAVORITE THINGS

Salazar enjoys many parts of his setup — the color, the bottom right-hand drawer with attachments for users to organize their impact wrenches, the bottle opener, and the soft-close drawer feature, to name a few, but his favorite part is the PACKOUT wall.

“I have a big area where I have a window, and I can’t really have anything up top, so I put two-by-fours in the back, and then I put plywood, and then I mounted the PACKOUT area,” Salazar describes. “I wanted more space to be able to organize stuff.”

Milwaukee’s various options of PACKOUT solutions appeal to Salazar because if he were to get tired of something or if it no longer works for him, then he can just remove it and replace it with something else.

A SPACE FOR EVERY TOOL

Salazar’s organizational system is simple. He stores his lesser-used tools in his toolbox — these are the tools that are more appropriate for when he’s working as a combo tech. His daily use tools are stored in his tool cart. Each drawer houses a different type of tool, so sandpapers, hand tools, blocks, hammers, and power tools all have their own space.

WHAT’S NEXT

Though Salazar enjoys his setup, he’s planning to add a few things in the future. The first is a custom wooden top for his toolbox that he can get his Instagram logo on, and the second is an additional locker to go on the other side of his box. Aside from that, the only other changes will come in the form of updates to the PACKOUT wall.
