GAIN A HIGHER KNOWLEDGE . IF YOU ARE JUST BEGINNING TO EXPLORE THE TOPIC OF SUSTAINABILITY IN AVIATION, YOU’RE NOT FLYING SOLO. BELOW, WE HAVE COMPILED A SET OF KEY TERMS TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AS YOU MOVE FORWARD IN YOUR JOURNEY.

KEY TERMS

AVIATION CARBON EXCHANGE (ACE)

A centralised marketplace where airlines and other aviation stakeholders can trade C02 emissions reductions for compliance or voluntary offsetting, offering the highest transparency around price and availability.

BOOK-AND-CLAIM

Where Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is unavailable, you may receive a credit when SAF is purchased, even while it is put into the fuel supply elsewhere.

CARBON EMISSIONS (C0 2 )

Greenhouse gases released during the combustion of fossil fuels expressed as metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (mtC02).

CARBON EQUIVALENT (C0 2 e)

The term used to describe different greenhouse gases as a common unit used to determine the carbon dioxide equivalent impact of non-CO2 emissions.

CARBON OFFSET

An independently verified reduction of carbon (C02) emissions or other greenhouse gases to compensate for emissions released elsewhere.

CARBON OFFSET STANDARD

Independently enforced requirements that ensure all offsets are credible and conducted with transparency.

CARBON REGISTRY

Tracks carbon offset production, ownership, and retirement while ensuring your offsets are accurately counted.

COMPREHENSIVE EMISSIONS OFFSET

Determines the CO 2 and non-CO 2 impact (in CO 2 equivalent) of a flight and uses verified carbon credits to offset the entire emissions footprint.

DROP-IN FUEL

A fuel that is interchangeable and compatible with conventional jet fuel when blended. No upgrades are needed for storage, nor is there a need for engine or fuel system modifications.

EMISSIONS (AIRCRAFT)

Most notably, these include carbon dioxide (C0 2), but emissions also include sulpur oxides, particulate matter (soot), water vapours, and ozone-depleting substances such as nitrous oxides. Water vapours and soot can create contrails and induced cirrus cloudiness, creating a warming effect stronger than that generated by C02

FOSSIL JET FUEL

Jet fuel certified under ASTM D1655 and typically denoted as JetA that is produced from the refinement of oil (a fossil fuel).

FUEL BLEND

The mix of SAF to traditional jet fuel; No more than 50% SAF is currently mixed with fossil jet fuel.

NET-ZERO EMISSIONS

The point at which the amount of emissions added to the environment is less than or equal to the amount of emissions that are simultaneously being removed from the environment elsewhere.

OFFSET PROJECT

The infrastructure, product, or technology created to reduce GHG emissions or increase carbon sequestration. Carbon offset projects can produce social and environmental benefits beyond just GHG reduction.

SUSTAINABLE FEEDSTOCK

The underlying source to be refined into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Sustainable feedstocks like used cooking oil or municipal waste and their production must not compete with arable land or edible feedstocks.

THE RATING SYSTEM

WHEN YOU LEVEL UP, WE REACH NEW HEIGHTS

Flexjet Owners may increase their participation level to include emissions reductions and research contributions through our partnership with 4AIR, creators of the first offset rating system focused on aviation sustainability. Now, air travel can be part of the solution.

LEVELS 1 + 2 – COMPREHENSIVE EMISSIONS OFFSET

THE PERFECT LAUNCH POINT

This comprehensive offset of both carbon (C02) and non-carbon (CO2e) emissions is included at no additional cost to you. Your C02 emissions are calculated using an aviation-specific emissions index and offset by 300%.

HOW DOES OFFSETTING WORK?

Offsets are independently verified emissions that support projects sponsored by authorities such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VERRA) and purchased in an amount equal to your carbon emissions footprint before being permanently retired in a public registry.

WHAT IS A CARBON OFFSET?

A carbon offset broadly refers to a reduction in GHG emissions –or an increase in carbon storage (e.g., through land restoration or the planting of trees) – that is used to compensate for emissions that occur elsewhere.

AREN’T JETS THE PROBLEM?

Overall, aviation is responsible for just 5% (CO2+non-CO2e) of all global emissions. However, it is more important than ever to address the impact of emissions on our climate, which is why the entire aviation industry is working hard to curb greenhouse gases.

ARE MY OFFSETS TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

As of May 2021, offsets, reductions, or contributions made through the Flexjet Sustainability Programme and 4AIR are not tax-deductible or eligible for any tax credits.

LEVEL 3 – EMISSIONS REDUCTION (SAF) – OPTIONAL

POWER PROGRESS BY ASCENDING NEUTRALITY

This available solution lets you go above and beyond neutral by sponsoring direct emissions reductions through the use and support of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) made from renewable sources.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL (SAF)?

SAF is jet fuel made from renewable sources that qualify as sustainable feedstocks, the largest of which is used cooking oil or grease, creating fewer emissions while supporting clean energy production.

CAN MY AIRCRAFT UTILISE SAF?

SAF is a “drop-in” fuel that can be safely blended with fossil jet fuel without technical or equipment modifications, as it shares the same characteristics and meets the same specifications.

WHY IS SAF BLENDED?

Standards require that SAF be combined with conventional jet fuel to qualify as a drop-in solution, often resulting in a maximum 50/50 blend that also accounts for the current limited availability of SAF.

WHY A MINIMUM REDUCTION OF 5%?

A commitment to a 5% direct reduction with SAF is a great place to start contributing to sustainability, as it aligns with aviation’s share of global emissions and increases the demand for SAF throughout the industry.

WHY USE A “BOOK-AND-CLAIM” REGISTRY?

With SAF availability currently limited, this system enables our Owners to purchase SAF where it is unobtainable and still receive all reductions credits while it is added to the fuel supply elsewhere.

LEVEL 4 – RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (ACF) – OPTIONAL

RISE UP AND BECOME PART OF THE

SOLUTION

This option enables you to advance the research and development of aviation technologies designed to help achieve sustainable air travel through direct contributions to the innovative Aviation Climate Fund (ACF).

WHAT IS THE AVIATION CLIMATE FUND (ACF)?

The ACF is a research-focused fund dedicated to the future of private aviation, mobilising funds to nonprofits and academic institutions globally to work on aviation efficiencies and innovations.

WHY SUPPORT THESE EFFORTS?

The environmental sustainability of both private and commercial aviation is no longer just important; it is absolutely imperative if we are to both maintain and advance the freedom of mobility we enjoy today.

HOW DOES THE ACF MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Through grants and contributions benefitting both private and university-based research, the ACF mobilises funds from stakeholders across aviation to expedite the market-readiness of emissions-lowering breakthroughs.

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF RECENT TECHNOLOGY?

Industry progress has come in the form of longer-lasting electric aircraft batteries and the expansion of fuels made from renewable sources, to name a few. The ACF will support the advancement of new flight optimisation algorithms, operational mitigation of environmental impacts, and more.

IS MAJOR PROGRESS POSSIBLE?

Today’s average aircraft releases approximately half the amount of carbon dioxide (C02) than jets in service just a few decades earlier, with new technology accelerating what and how much can be achieved by the day.

FOREST CONSERVATION

The importance of forests cannot be understated. We depend on them for our survival, from the air we breathe to the structures we build. They provide habitats for animals, offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion, and mitigate the effects of climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it.

Forestlands make an essential contribution to food security by helping to maintain the environmental conditions required for agricultural production. They stabilise the soil, prevent erosion, enhance the land’s capacity to store water, and moderate both air and soil temperatures. Around the world, there are opportunities to protect and restore these essential ecosystems.

MAI NDOMBE REDD+ PROJECT DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The Congo Basin is the second largest intact rainforest in the world, and it is one of the most important in the fight against climate change. In the 1970s, loggers damaged the forest, which in turn harmed the wildlife the people depended on and changed the lives of the people themselves. Revenue generated from the sale of carbon credits through the Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project has prevented additional deforestation, protected habitats for endangered elephants, and built both primary and secondary schools.

DISTRIBUTING MODERN COOKSTOVES

Nearly three billion people worldwide do not have access to modern cooking devices, forcing them to prepare meals over an open flame – often inside of their homes. Not only does this practice often lead to respiratory illnesses and heart problems, it requires quite a bit of fuel – usually wood or coal. According to The World Bank, residential solid fuel burning accounts for up to 58% of global black carbon emissions and more than one gigaton of carbon dioxide per year.

This problem disproportionately and adversely affects women and children, as half of the four million premature deaths caused each year by indoor air pollution claim youth under the age of five.

THE HOUSEHOLD SECTOR IS THE PRIMARY ENERGY USER IN MALAWI WITH FAMILIES COOKING MEALS OVER INDOOR OPEN FLAMES.

IMPROVED COOKSTOVE PROJECT

Support of this project brings improved cookstoves to families so that they no longer need to cook over open flames inside their homes. Using modern cookstoves allow these communities to reduce their reliance on wood and coal and, as a result, reduce both the air pollution indoors and the CO2 emissions emitted into the environment.

When families use less wood or coal for cooking, they don’t have to spend so much time searching for fuel for the fire, as some women spend hours a day collecting enough firewood to cook just one meal. More importantly, these cookstoves eliminate the exposure of families to lung-damaging emissions.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

To address climate change, we must also help countries work toward access to affordable and sustainable energy as a key part of eradicating poverty through reliable access to electricity from renewable sources. From wind turbine farms and solar panel grids to hydroelectric power networks, renewable energy can offer fuel from a clean source that does not generate earth-warming emissions like traditional fossil-based jet fuels.

This project will reduce harmful emissions by supporting solar panel generation plants producing energy that otherwise would have been provided by fossil fuel-fired power plants in India. Operated by a mining company, the solar panel energy plant will contribute to the community in more ways than just generating renewable energy. Job opportunities with increased wages will come from the plant and from those who produce equipment needed for it. In addition, bringing this new technology to these communities will indirectly educate people on the industry.
