very year the best innovations in tech descend upon Las Vegas, and CES 2022 was no exception. Coming back to CES in-person was a joy, and it was great to reunite with old friends and to meet and make new acquaintances.

On behalf of TWICE, Residential Systems and TechRadar Pro, I would like to congratulate the winners of the 2022 TWICE Picks Awards, the brands’ annual program honoring the best and most influential consumer technology at CES 2022. This issue is packed full of our award winners, and I’d like to extend my thanks to all who entered. Just like last year, it was hard for our judges to narrow down the list from all the amazing innovations entered. But we’re proud to announce our winners in a special supplement in this issue. FYI, our digital showcase of all entries will be coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

In the coming months, TWICE will be covering more in-person events, namely Nationwide Marketing Group’s PrimeTime, Azione Unlimited’s “New Dreams in New Orleans” conference and BrandSource and ProSource’s Summit conferences. I can’t wait to feel the energy and excitement of those

groups as they reconnect and push forward into a successful new year.

Being able to witness the camaraderie and energy at each of these events invigorates my own efforts, and I’m grateful that such passion and goodness exists in our industry.

Believe it or not, we’re already a month into 2022, and there is a lot to be excited about–even with the lingering supply chain woes and other retail challenges. Regardless of where we were this time last year, we’ve come through it all together and we’ll get through 2022 the same way - together.

That’s not to say we won’t encounter difficulties in the year ahead.

“Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.”

I’ve recently discovered Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, and this quote struck home as I thought of what lies ahead for us as retailers, employers and employees, families and individuals. Don’t take discomfort as failure. Stay true to your vision and take it one step at a time, pushing forward with all you’ve got.

Success is within your grasp - reach out together and take it. Be well, stay healthy, and let’s conquer 2022 together.

Executive Insight: Howard’s Riddle Shares Insights Into Pandemic Trends What Covid Retailing Adjustments Will Become the ‘New Normal’?

imilar to Michael Corleone’s frustration in Godfather Part III, just when we thought we were out of the pandemic, the Omicron strain has pulled us back in. How will the experience dealing with Covid thus far help retailers deal with these current pandemic conditions? What lessons are likely to carry forward beyond the current Covid crisis? Are there differences between how entertainment, home office device retailers and appliance retailers fared during this challenging period?

“Major appliance retailers had the advantage of being an ‘essential’ product, and consumers who were nesting at home needed to both protect their need of a refrigerator, washer, range, etc.,” observes John Riddle, president and CEO of Howard’s Appliance. “Plus, [quarantining consumers] were unintentionally wearing out the appliances at home because of overuse. I think those same retailers had a challenge, though, of having the other element of home delivery and home installation.”

Regardless of what type goods are displayed on show floors or shelves, creating a safe and consistent in-store experience was and is a key piece of pandemic retailing.

“Our speed of implementing safety protocols and insuring safety for all consumers and staff was unprecedented in the industry,” Riddle proudly relates. “While our

competitors were closing shop, Howard’s stayed open. Our approach was to first let customers know that we were open and committed to serving them through the pandemic. We quickly addressed safety protocols for in-home deliveries, allowing customers to be able to feel comfortable to allow delivery and installation teams into their homes.”

Next, presenting and reacting as neighbors helped maintain consistent traffic. Technology retailers who anticipated and fulfilled customer needs rather than simply impersonally selling products succeeded. “Howard’s quickly offered solutions like Zoom Call Shopping, ‘loaner’ products if the consumer’s choice of purchase was not available, and broader portfolios of product offerings in each category to make sure consumers still had several choices,” Riddle says. “We launched personalized appointments so that customers were aware that they did not need to go into a store to purchase their appliances. We also put a tremendous focus on in-stock products that were available for next day delivery for customers who had an immediate need.”

Another key to pandemic retail success was not only having enough inventory on hand, but inventory of the right products.

For instance, Riddle reports a huge spike of consumer interest in smart, connected appliances. “Consumers were able to research heavily. All generations were

nested at home and able to help each other on the research and benefits of smart/ connected major appliances. Our Experience Centers facilitated their shopping experience and made the journey frictionless.”

One ongoing challenge for retailers during Covid has been pricing, both due to normal fluctuations, tariff reaction, spikes precipitated by supply chain, and the current inflationary trend. “Price was less important during the pandemic as availability and demand rose,” Riddle opines. “Availability drove a higher-thannormal factoring in the consumer’s choice.

But as availability improves, I believe promotional importance will rise.

“Our industry has two primary price levers,” Riddle continues, “invoice price and promotional cadence. Since 2018, there have been steady price increases and more dramatic in scope in 2020 and 2021.

Promotional cadence of course has decreased significantly since July of 2020. I believe the industry will need to be careful on the impact of inflation on the consumer.”

Riddle also notes that with ongoing supply chain uncertainty, retailers have had to rethink promotions. “We have had to be nimbler due to the long lead times for product and lack of promotional support from brands,” he says. “While we used to have market month-long promotions, we have had to market our own promotions in shorter promotional windows. The new normal is to continue to focus on in-stock products in our promotional marketing.”

Additionally, with more consumers staying home to shop, retailers have had to adjust all their marketing and selling techniques – techniques such as BOPIS. “[The pandemic] caused us to look at the decades-old consumer journey in major consumer durables and re-evaluate,” Riddle explains. “We expanded staffing, training, and new digital tools to create a new customer experience. We have developed a store-wide training initiative and an intern hiring program. All our Experience Centers feature ‘live’ product for the consumer to play with…and engage with our product advisors, who are all now armed with iPads and an ability to see and show the best ways their products can be used at home.”

he latest and greatest technologies often come at a high cost. Yet, in the electronic age, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many consumers want to get their hands on the latest pieces of technology.

Especially with the way the pandemic has pushed more people to adopt remote working trends and technologies that cater to that kind of work, getting your hands on reliable devices is more important now than ever before.

Fortunately, some people sell their old or unwanted gadgets through trade-in programs and websites. Many tech companies such as Apple, Best Buy, and Amazon run programs that allow customers to trade in their devices for store credit or pure cash. Not only does this help the seller, but this makes devices more accessible to those on a budget.

Below is some more information about the growth of this trade-in device market and what to expect in the future.

USED ELECTRONICS: POPULAR JUST DURING THE 2021 HOLIDAY SEASON? This holiday season was quite challenging for different retailers, and consumer electronics companies were no exception.

The global chip shortage, among other issues like staff shortages, supply chain disruptions, and new variants of the COVID-19 virus affected the types of tech products holiday shoppers could buy for their loved ones.

As a result, smaller businesses in the resale market are thriving, as more customers are turning to buy older models of electronics or refurbished products. Some people are also choosing to have their damaged phones repaired instead of purchasing the latest model, especially when it comes to the iPhone.

However, it shouldn’t come as a surprise

because Apple hasn’t made any mindblowing changes between models in the last few years. Unless the tech giant introduces a major shift in the iPhone, users will continue purchasing refurbished or secondhand models.

Sometimes, it’s better to work with a reputable dealer when buying used items compared to breaking the bank on the newest item on the market.

For years, customers were limited in what they could do with the dusty laptop sitting in their closet. Maybe they could sell to friends, family, or someone they trust locally.

There are challenges associated with meeting someone online through eBay, for example, as it isn’t the safest option. It’s better to work with a trustworthy source when trading devices.

TRADE-IN PROGRAMS GROWING IN POPULARITY There are several options for customers looking to sell their old technology.

However, the challenging part is finding the right option to give customers the best deal.

No customer wants to give their electronics away for a low price — that’s why customers must know what an acceptable price for their unwanted technology is.

These are some of the trade-in programs that are growing in popularity:

DECLUTTR DeCluttr is a website that accepts all different types of unwanted electronics.

When customers trade in their items, the turnaround time is quick, and they receive their payments pretty fast. Payments come through PayPal, direct deposit, or customers can choose to send the money to a charity.

APPLE Apple’s trade-in program accepts many

devices, and devices from other companies are no exception. Additionally, if a customer brings in equipment that has no trade-in value, Apple will recycle it free of charge. It takes a few weeks to complete the trade-in process, but it can be much quicker if customers visit an Apple Store close to them.

ITSWORTHMORE ItsWorthMore will take old electronics from customers and give them cash in exchange for them. Customers will answer questions about their old electronics, so the site knows how much it’s worth. The site will give customers an offer and a prepaid shipping label to send only if the offer is accepted. Payments are made through PayPal, Zelle, or check.

AMAZON Amazon accepts many different devices, from smart home doorbells to smartphones and beyond. Amazon will offer customers a trade-in value when they plug in basic information about the device’s specifications. Usually, after Amazon receives the unwanted item, it’s checked and the order is reviewed before customers receive payment in the form of an Amazon gift card.

BEST BUY Best Buy has an online trade-in estimator on its website, so there’s no guessing what items may be worth. Best Buy gift cards are given in exchange for unwanted or older devices. The turnaround time for the trade-in process is a bit longer compared to the options listed above, but Best Buy will recycle products that have no value.

These programs, among others, highlight how the trade-in market for used electronics will continue to thrive. As long as people use technology, there will be a demand for refurbished products.

TRADE-IN PROGRAMS WILL CONTINUE TO THRIVE As long as consumers use technology, there will be a market for refurbished electronics. The planet will benefit because these old electronics will not end up in an already jam-packed landfill. Consider using some of the programs listed above to trade in old devices!

Another View: The Biggest Lie In Retail Customers will remain loyal as long as it’s convenient

If you ask me, customer loyalty is unfortunately becoming a thing of the past, and for a variety of reasons. In fact, the Myth of Customer Loyalty may quite possibly be the single biggest lie in the world of retail sales.

Before I try to argue my point, let me start by telling you a little story …

I was doing some consulting for a member dealer recently and when I was done with my overview of his operations, I recommended a variety of changes that I believed would improve both his revenues and overall profitability.

The problem I ran into with my recommendations was that the store owner was convinced that his customers were extremely loyal. So loyal in fact, that the dealer believed they would look elsewhere for their appliance needs if some of my suggested changes were implemented.

Making matters even worse was the fact that this dealer was convinced that the overwhelming majority of his customers only did business with him because of the very same practices that I was advocating he change. I did my best to convince him that customer loyalty only goes so far, and the jury is still out on whether I succeeded in changing his mind.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do believe customer loyalty exists; I just don’t believe it exists to the extent that many retailers still think it does. So, on the flight home from the dealer, I started wondering about the realities of customer loyalty in 2021.

In researching this column, I combed the Internet for information on customer loyalty and I discovered what I believe are two extremely enlightening statistics.

f you have been in retail for any length of time, I can all but guarantee you’ve heard one and probably all of these statements uttered by a customer at some point:

“I’m your best customer.”

“I buy all of my appliances from you.” (This one is my personal favorite because it almost always comes from a customer seeking service on their Kenmore appliance.)

“I would never do business with anyone else.”

The problem is that each of those statements is probably a lie.

Enlightening Statistic No. 1: According to an article I came across, these are the top four factors that shape a

shopper’s decision on where to make a purchase:

• Price.

• Store location.

• Availability/purchase options.

• Loyalty to brand or store.

The Big Takeaway here — and please, let this sink in for a moment — is that your store’s location is substantially more important to customers than their loyalty to your business.

Enlightening Statistic No. 2: In my research, I also discovered some staggering numbers about how many Americans move each year. Consider these facts:

• The average American moves 11.7 times in their lifetime.

• 40,000,000 Americans (13 percent of the country) move every year.

• Meaning every person in the U.S. moves •

•

approximately once every eight years on average.

Of those who move, 35 percent leave the county (or beyond). And let’s face it: Unless your company borders two counties, “leave the county” in all likelihood also means out of your market area.

I know, some people move every year and others stay put for fifty years. But the numbers don’t lie. On average, Americans move and they move often.

And even if they only move ten or twenty miles away, their loyalty to your store is certainly going to be tested.

THE BIG TAKEAWAY HERE: STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, ON AVERAGE, YOUR ENTIRE CUSTOMER BASE CHANGES EVERY EIGHT YEARS! The bottom line to me is that you need to constantly be on the lookout for new customers. You need to strike a balance between keeping your loyal customers happy and doing what is best for the longterm success of your business.

‘Industry Stalwart’ Robert Heiblim Dies

L

ong-time consumer technology executive, consultant, and CTA committee chair and division head Robert Heiblim, 69, died Friday, January 7, after a long battle with cancer.

For the last 12 years, Heiblim was a partner at bluesalve partners, which he co-founded, a consumer electronics consulting company. A highly regarded CTA mentor for more than a decade, Heiblim was a Consumer Electronics Foundation trustee and served as board chair of the CTA Small Business Council, which represents the over 2500 member companies, from 2019-2020 and helps support CES Eureka Park startups. He was chair of the Audio Board from 2016-2017 and vice chair from 2012 during which time he helped shepherd the High Resolution Audio standard. Heiblim also was a member of the CTA-predecessor Electronic Industries Association/ Consumer Electronics Group Board of Directors from 1991-1993.

“We mourn the passing of industry stalwart Robert Heiblim,” noted CTA president and CEO Gary Shapiro. “He gave of himself to the industry in so many ways: as a top executive of major technology brands, as a consultant and as a friend and mentor to so many in industry. We will miss his optimism, commitment to the industry and eagerness to share his wealth of knowledge.”

After studying mathematics at U.C. Berkeley and attending the first CES in 1969 in New York while working for Sam Goody’s record stores during the summer, Heiblim started out his business career at Pacific Stereo. He joined Denon in 1980 and was named Denon Electronics president a year later. During his tenure, Denon introduced what is now its industry-leading line of A/V receivers, as well as other new audio businesses,

products, and technologies.

After leaving Denon in 2001, Heiblim served as a senior vice president at maker Gemini Industries for two years and as an SVP at Altec-Lansing for another two years before co-founding bluesalve.

He was a significant contributor to audio standards extending back to the Working Groups for the development of the CD and recently setting the definitions for high resolution audio and over the counter (OTC) technologies for the hard of hearing.

Over the years, Heiblim was a ubiquitous and ebullient presence at industry events, a frequent CES conference panelist, and both friend, boss, and mentor to uncountable numbers of consumer technology executives.

Heiblim is survived by his wife, Lisa, twin sons Derek and Trevor, and a daughter, Riley-Rose. By request of his family, donations in his honor should be directed to the CTA Foundation.

Global eCommerce Payments Are Set To Soar In The Next Few Years Report estimates it will reach $7.5 trillion by 2026

This represents a growth rate increasing by 55% over the next five years, with the sector previously valued at $4.9 trillion in 2021.

Retailers offering omnichannel retail experiences are highlighted as the main driver of this growth, which over time, will increase user ecommerce spend, the analyst firm claimed, as omnichannel retail provides end users with the ability to access retail services, including sales and customer support, via multiple channels.

ECOMMERCE SPEND RISES The report also predicts that ecommerce payments, including online, mobile and physical retail locations will all contribute to the sector’s growth, as users expect the same services to be available irrespective of the channel.

Juniper Research states that there is an increase in appetite for new payment methods within eCommerce checkouts, including Open Banking-facilitated payments and digital wallet one-click checkout buttons.

“Merchants should ensure payment options match changing user expectations, or they will be rapidly left behind”, it added.

hure has revealed a new look and sound for the second generation of its longstanding SRH840 and SRH440 headphones.

The updated SRH840A and SRH440A models have been overhauled to offer

improved comfort and durability as well as a more stylish appearance for imageconscious users.

Still built with professional use in mind, the new models incorporate upgrades, including lower harmonic distortion and more precise left-right driver matching.

The SRH840A and SRH440A have a closed-

back, circumaural design with a wide padded headband intended to provide comfort for long listening sessions. Shure says that the new build with matt black finish is more hardwearing and will include a detachable, locking straight cable as standard, rather than coiled.

While 40mm neodymium dynamic drivers power both models, the SRH840A has a frequency response that Shure claims delivers professional-grade sound with rich bass, clear mid-range, extended highs across a range of 5 Hz - 25,000 Hz, and sensitivity of 197 dB/mW (@ 1 kHz). This more premium model also includes gold detailing on the cups.

Meanwhile, the SRH440A are aimed at podcasters, and home mixers with a frequency response of 10 Hz - 22,000 Hz and sensitivity of 97 dB/m (@ 1 kHz), which Shure says provides a consistent and uncoloured sound.

8K Association Announces Specification Update; New Members The new specification starts in January 2022, and new members include Prime Video.

he 8K Association (8KA) has published an updated performance specification for the 8K Association Certified mark program. The updated specification adds new decoding requirements, new image quality metrics, and a game mode.

The 8KA has also announced new member growth in the second half of 2021.

New members include Prime Video, content creation company 4by4, and testing service provider UL, with TV maker Changhong rejoining the organization.

TV shoppers looking for televisions that offer four times the resolution available from 4K TVs and that meet the high-

performance standards of the 8K Association Certified program will benefit from the new broader performance requirements applied to 8K TVs launching in the market starting this year. The 8KA has already Certified over 80 TV models to date.

In addition to the existing requirements for resolution, luminance, color, and connectivity standards that ensure powerful big-screen performance, the 8K Association Certified logo program now recognizes a broader set of video decoding standards that will promote the wider availability of 8K streaming content.

The 8K Association is also pioneering the use of Ambient Contrast Ratio (ACR) as a new way to help ensure good picture quality performance in different ambient lighting conditions. For example, when the room is dark, the TV will deliver the brightest colors and widest contrast. But as the ambient illumination increases, both of these picture quality elements diminish. This can be overcome with brighter TVs and TV screen technology with lower reflectance. The 8KA ACR test measures the reflectivity of the TV with a test pattern in both bright and dim illumination conditions and sets levels for performance in each case that the TV must pass. ACR is an important factor for TVs from the users’ perspective, regardless of resolution.

“We have been discussing ACR more than a year as a new item and it was finally included in V2.1.0”, notes KG Lee, chair of the Technology Work Group. “While passing the ACR spec is optional now for certification, members are required to provide the data so we can optimize the pass/fail criteria for a future mandatory requirement.”

“Using ACR as a metric allows us to better manage the experience of viewers in different ambient light conditions that we all have in the home,” says Pete Sellar, chair of the Certification Work Group in the 8KA. “These and other efforts we are putting into developing of Certified Specification should give consumers confidence that 8K Certified TVs support the latest developments in TV viewing.”

Also included in the revised specification are new Gaming mode requirements that include support for Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) via the HDMI 2.1 interface. Gaming on 8K TVs is expected to be an important use case so the 8K Association wants to help ensure the best performance.

8KA MEMBER UPDATE In terms of new members, joining the organization is Korea-based 4by4 Inc, a visual technology company that has produced 8K demo and promotional videos and manages the KEYCUTstock platform to license video clips up to 8K in resolution. 4by4 also has an AI-based deep learning solution named PIXELL, which enhances video quality from HD up to 8K. KEYCUTstock platform uses the PIXELL solution to produce 8K video content from the raw video data for advertising companies, broadcasting companies, and others.

Retailers Turn To Hybrid Cloud And AI To Meet Shifting Consumer Behaviors Hybrid shopping is quickly becoming the new norm

he pandemic has transformed the nature of work with more employees working from home than ever before it has also changed how consumers shop according to a new study from IBM and the National Retail Federation.

The new global study of over 19,000 titled “Consumers want it all” revealed that hybrid shopping which mixes physical and digital channels in shopping journeys is on the rise as a result of shopping habits consumers adopted out of necessity that are now becoming routine.

Of those surveyed, almost three quarters (72%) said that they use retail stores as all or part of their primary purchase method. The reasons they gave for visiting a store include touching and feeling products before buying them (50%), picking and choosing their own products (47%) and getting products right away (43%).

However, 27 percent of respondents said that hybrid shopping, where part of their shopping journey is conducted online and the other half takes place in a retail store, is their method of choice. When it came to the generation most likely to be a ‘hybrid shopper’, Gen Z consumers lead the way when compared to other age groups.

VP of research and development and industry analysis at the National Retail Federation, Mark Matthews explained in a press release how hybrid shopping represents a fundamental shift in consumer

behavior, saying: “While many surveyed consumers still place high value on the traditional in-store shopping experience, they also now expect the flexibility to build their own shopping journey – according to the behaviors prevalent to their age range, available tools and the product category they are looking to purchase. This ‘hybrid’ approach is a fundamental shift in consumer behavior.”

GROWING IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY While adoption of hybrid cloud, AI and other technologies can allow retailers to create bespoke hybrid shopping experiences, IBM’s new study has also revealed that they’ll need to keep sustainability in mind to retain and grow their customer base.

Purpose-driven consumers that choose products and brands based on their own values like sustainability are now the largest segment of consumers surveyed (44%) according to the study. At the same time, 62 percent of respondents are willing to change their purchasing habits to reduce environmental impact which is up from 57 percent two years ago.

Half of respondents said they are now willing to pay an average premium of 70 percent for sustainability which is roughly double the premium from 2020. Still though, there is a gap between intention and action with only 31 percent of respondents saying that sustainable products made up most or all of their last purchase.

Dglobal managing director of IBM Consumer Industries, Luq Niazi provided further insight on the study’s findings and the growing importance of sustainability to consumers, saying: “The survey shows over the last year, sustainability became increasingly important to consumers, though there’s still a gap between their intentions and actions due to lack of information in the buying process. Increasingly, it’s becoming essential that retail brands demonstrate sustainable choices and options in each step of the customer experience. At the same time, hybrid shopping has taken hold in most categories, particularly in home goods and apparel; and while stores continue to play the predominant role in grocery, hybrid shopping is growing in these categories too.”
