BOARDROOM ATTIRE: OUR GUIDE TO SUSTAINABLE WOMEN'S TAILORING & SUITS

Don't leave the power dressing to men.

Sleek tailoring can ensure you look your best, while remaining chic and office-appropriate. Gone are the days of suits being uncomfortable, synthetic straight-jackets you can't wait to get out of at the end of the day. We've rounded up some of the best women's sustainable tailoring brands on the market that could easily take you from work, straight out for dinner afterwards. You can even dress down the separates with a t-shirt or jeans to help you decrease the cost-per-wear. Wardrobe heroes are the ones that have versatility - that's why we simply love good quality tailoring. Here's the Our Voice guide to sustainable women's tailoring & suits.

SONI LONDON

First up is Soni London, a marketplace for independent, sustainable brands founded by two Ukrainian women. They stock suits from brands across Europe, offering styles that vary from classic to quirky upcycled pieces. We particularly love the butter yellow longline blazer and trouser suit set by Bazhane, another Ukrainian-founded brand. Butter yellow is set to be big this season and provides a fresh, spring take on traditional tailoring!

BIANCA SPENDER

Next on our list is Aussie-brand, Bianca Spender. This chic womenswear brand is on their way to being carbon neutral and prioritise natural fibres in their designs. We love how their pieces could be worn from the office straight out for dinner. Their modern workwear edit embodies the modern woman, from traditional trouser and jacket combinations to quirky pleated and ruched shirts that bring an air of femininity to an otherwise structured ensemble. Of her designs, Bianca says: “Interesting design can’t just be beautiful, it has to be modern, tell a story, be perfectly fitted, and have longevity.”

ALCHEMY LONDON

A slightly more alternative take on suiting comes from the third brand in our list; Alchemy London. This brand’s take on workwearinspired co-ords consists of waistcoats, blazers and trousers made from deadstock fabrics. Their backless waistcoats may not be 100% office-friendly on their own, due to the daring open back style - but we still think it’s a winner. Layer over a simple white t-shirt and pair with the blazer for a vintage inspired look, or go for their full back style waistcoat if you’re looking for something less statement.

ALBARAY

Albaray was born in 2020 off the back of a zoom conversation with friends. The fourth in our list, this conscious-clothing brand, is now stocked in M&S, Next and John Lewis. Their pieces are designed to be a collection of versatile styles to stand the test of time and are made from a range of eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton and recycled polyester. Their tailoring is comfortable, yet elevated - making it ideal for a long day at work. With mix and match pieces in shades such as nude and black, one core suit could be worn multiple ways throughout the week and paired with more casual pieces such as skirts or t-shirts.

ALIGNE

If Mrs Sofia Richie-Grange is a fan, you can guarantee the brand exudes chic. Another British brand for the list, Aligne has seen a dramatic increase in demand for their brand after many celebrity endorsements. We particularly love their long-line blazer and waistcoats, which have been popular amongst the fashion crowd this season. Though not exclusively a tailoring brand, these pieces are what the brand is known for and it’s easy to see why, with their flattering waist cinch effect.

STELLA MCCARTNEY

Finally, a brand that puts sustainability at the heart of what they do; Stella McCartney. Certainly not the cheapest on the list, but if you’re looking to invest in tailoring that you can see you through your entire corporate career, look no further. With pieces designed to suit any taste, whether you prefer more feminine shapes in fresh springtime palettes or heavy structured silhouettes that exude confidence and authority, they’ve got it covered. Stella is world-renowned for a reason, particularly around her use of pioneering fabrics such as forest-friendly viscose and certified wool.

YOGA WITH IZY

EVERY TIME I STEP ON MY MAT AND TAKE THAT FIRST BREATH AT THE START OF MY PRACTICE, IT FEELS LIKE COMING HOME

IZY’S STORY

Izy is a UK based women’s health advocate, writer, yoga teacher and therapist .

Yoga became part of my healing process and holistic lifestyle after being diagnosed at the age of 25 with a borderline ovarian tumour and a few years later with endometriosis. Having undergone various gynaecological surgeries, including IVF preservation at the age of 30, it was my consultant that encouraged me to try a yoga class, which then led onto a solo trip to Kerela, India. Before, embarking on a yoga teacher training with Yogacampus (200hr) and then Yoni Shakti Well Woman Yoga Therapy (220hr).

Yoga has transformed my life - supporting me through life’s challenges, especially learning to navigate a long-term,

chronic condition. Over the years I have explored many different styles of yogayin, restorative, therapeutic yoga for women, vinyasa etc. However, I have been drawn to a more feminine, rhythmic and intuitive practice that supports the ebbs and flows of a women’s cycle.

Yoga with Izy focuses on gentle breathwork & stretches, therapeutic massage, mindful movement and restorative stillness. Supporting women through their life cycles - from menarche to menopause.

As a woman we can hold a lot of emotions within the pelvic space - muscles can become tight and weak due to poor posture, pain and inactivity (especially women that suffer from gynaecological issues). Therefore, it is important to nourish, relax and soften the muscles, to release tension within the pelvic area and the whole body.

MINDFUL MEDITATION, BREATH & BODY AWARENESS

Yoga is an ancient practice that connects the mind, body and breath. Finding a sense of equanimity in our day to day lives. Especially, in today’s society when so many expectations are placed upon us. Connecting with our parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) can aid in the relaxation process and support one’s overall well-being.

Being mindful and resting your awareness on the breath and the present moment is a gift. If thoughts, emotions, sensations enter the mind, it is important to acknowledge them without judgement, allowing them to pass.

Simply feeling the sun on your face, connecting with the ground beneath your feet or hearing the sound of birds in the morning can bring you more into the present.

We all need to foster a slower approach and recognise that our bodies are beautiful, cyclical vessels to be looked after with mindful movement, walking in the fresh air, nutrition and rest.

14

BELINDA FINCH

LEADING THE WAY IN TECH AND BEYOND

BELINDA FINCH, THE CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER (CIO) AT IFS, IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH IN THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

24 WORDS: BECKY NORTHFIELD

With a diverse background spanning consulting, telecommunications, and digital transformation, Belinda brings a unique perspective to her role as CIO at IFS. In this exclusive interview with Our Voice magazine, she shares insights into her journey, the evolving landscape of technology, and her passion for promoting diversity and innovation in the industry.

“My path to CIO has been quite an interesting one and is very non-traditional, although I think the path that I took is becoming more traditional now.”

Belinda’s career trajectory is nothing short of remarkable. Born and raised in Cardiff, Wales, she defied expectations from an early age. “I was always drawn to technology,” she recalls, “even when it wasn’t the norm for girls.” Despite initial resistance, Belinda pursued her passion, blazing a trail in a field traditionally dominated by men. “I was one of four pupils who did the first-ever A-level Computer Science in Welsh,” she proudly shares. This early experience set the stage for a career marked by innovation and boundary-pushing.

After completing her education, Belinda embarked on a journey that would take her through some of the most prominent firms in the tech and telco industry. From KPMG to Accenture, and later Vodafone and Three, she honed her consulting, digital transformation, and leadership skills. Each role provided invaluable lessons and insights, shaping her into the seasoned executive she is today. “At the heart of my approach is the balance between understanding technology and the business side,” Belinda explains. “It’s about bridging the gap and ensuring alignment between the two.”

25
& KARI-ANNE CLAYTON
WENDY REDSHAW

Belinda’s role as CIO at IFS is multifaceted. She oversees the company’s IT operations, drives digital transformation initiatives, and fosters a culture of innovation. “We’re predicting big growth, so we need to scale up in the right areas,” she emphasises. With a focus on leveraging emerging technologies like AI to enhance productivity and customer experiences, Belinda is at the forefront of IFS’s strategic initiatives.

But Belinda’s impact extends beyond the boardroom. A devoted advocate for diversity and inclusion, she is passionate about promoting women in STEM fields. “We are lightyears ahead of where we used to be. In the late nineties, I was the only female graduate in the IT department I joined. To me, they all seemed middle-aged. They all wore sandals and woolly jumpers. And it’s just not like that anymore. We do have very equal opportunities for women.”

“The problem, as I see it, is getting girls interested in STEM. And it is still a problem, and I can see that with my own daughter. She’s 13. She’s got two CIOs as parents. She should be really excited about IT and computer science, and she can’t think of anything worse.”

“She’s choosing her GCSEs now, and she’s adamant she will not do IT at GCSE because only the boys will choose it. This is where our problem lies, she reflects. It’s not when we enter the workforce as there is a lot more equal opportunity; it begins so much earlier than that.”

“We massively celebrate diversity at IFS and accept that there are different perspectives in the world. As a truly international company serving customers
throughout the globe, we realise our success is tantamount to respect for those with different points of view.”

Her advocacy extends to addressing what she perceives as the root causes of gender disparities, starting with early education. “We need to make technology more appealing to girls from a young age,” she asserts, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to STEM education.”

Belinda offers sage advice for aspiring women in technology: “Don’t be put off by thinking it’s a male-dominated environment. There are amazing opportunities for women in tech.” She underscores the importance of authenticity and collaboration in navigating career paths, urging women to embrace their strengths and seek support when needed.”

“There are many amazing women in technology. There are awesome female leaders at all levels. The more women who enter the technology industry, the more chance we have to ensure we keep it this way.”

“And there are so many careers that you can have in STEM”, she continues, “and it doesn’t have to be your traditional computer programming. I mean, you can be a customer experience designer, or you can be a product development expert designing the newest technology, games, and trends. You can jump into artificial intelligence. I mean, we all know that that’s going to absolutely skyrocket over the next few years.

And it’s working in technology to make the world a better place. It’s all about technology these days, and it’s just incredibly exciting.

We just need to get those girls interested in it.”

26 WENDY REDSHAW & KARI-ANNE CLAYTON

Looking ahead, Belinda envisions a future where technology continues to shape industries and experiences. From AI-driven personalisation to sustainability initiatives, she sees immense potential for innovation.

“AI is one of those massive technologies that are going to help in every single area, she muses. “We’ve got a big risk with AI, especially in education. I would love to have been able to use ChatGPT when I was in education. That would be amazing. But of course, there’s a risk of plagiarism that we can’t ignore, so we need to integrate it into the curriculum. There’s no other way of doing it. We can’t fight against it.”

And what about IFS and their customers?

What does the future hold there, we ask. “We’ve got massive opportunities in 2024 and beyond, “ says Belinda. “From an IFS point of view, we are forecasting 30% growth this year, so the demand for our customer solutions will increase.”

“Customers want AI embedded into their tools as standard. They are going to expect it. And it needs to be included in all software tools. Luckily, we’ve done that already in IFS.ai and expect them to be much more efficient and deploy these resources more smartly.

So predictably, the number one thing for the future is AI.”

“We expect machine learning to continue to show more promise and more use cases. And as our economic conditions start to improve and we see more investment in tech, we will start to see more uses of this.”

She adds that “ESG and sustainability are another huge focus point, and there’s a renewed focus on this topic based on new regulations and reporting.”

“There are new reporting requirements, and we must be able to measure our ESG impact. So, all businesses are looking for what data they can get on sustainability.”

“What customers are doing now is less of a tick box exercise, which is what it used to be, but it’s now about getting the data and whether it could be used advantageously.

Can I be using it for growth, efficiency and development, and not just using the data to tick a box on a report?” She asks herself.

“The other one is cybersecurity, she continues. She highlights another key trend she predicts will be at the precipice of change. “This becomes ever more increasingly important as there are more sophisticated ways terrorists in this world are trying to get into other people’s systems. In our lifetime, we will see a mass cyber-attack worldwide, and it will be a generational disaster.”

This prediction is all rather solemn, but we cannot help but agree.

“Cybersecurity is going to be the only thing on people’s minds. For those of us responsible for cyber security, it is the one thing that keeps you awake at night. The more we investigate it, and the more companies invest on cybersecurity, the better.”

So how does that happen, and what suggestions does Belinda have for the plethora of CIOs and CISOs out there struggling with their insomnia?

“We need to transform to secure, and that needs to be a more prominent driver for change. So, instead of just cost reduction or great customer experience or whatever the reason you want to change, being more secure will end up on the top of the list.”

The thoughts and ideas continue at a rate of knots, her mind clearly overflowing with all of the latest tech trends that businesses have had to contend with over the past 18 months.

“The metaverse, she says. I used to be quite excited about this. Now, I don’t really get it, so it’s been shoved way down my list of things to be excited about. I think it’s just a very niche area, and it’s cool for people who think it’s cool. My 13-year-old, who seems to be interested in everything that’s cool now, is not interested in metaverse at all, and I’d expect it to be coming out in that generation.” And lastly, quantum computing?

28
Reinvent what your business could be Accenture is the partner to help reinvent what your business could be. See how we can help at accenture.com Let there be change

“Honestly, it’s so hard to understand, she smiles. I think that we are more constrained by the lack of data as opposed to the lack of firepower. But perhaps it’s just because I’m not clever enough to understand it”. We doubt that very much.

Eventually, we move away from the boardroom and on to the topics that really ignite her passions. Belinda finds inspiration in fashion as well as technology, and beyond the confines of the boardroom, her imagination lights up at the possibility of bringing her two loves together.

She perceives the fashion industry not merely as an established entity but as a fertile ground awaiting disruption and reinvention. Envisioning a landscape where technology serves as a catalyst for profound change. She articulates, “The fashion industry is ripe for disruption,” recognising the inherent stagnation that traditional paradigms often entail. This includes the emergence of AI-powered wardrobe recommendations. These algorithms, fueled by vast troves of data, possess the capability

to revolutionise how individuals choose to dress. No longer bound by subjective preferences or fleeting trends, consumers stand to benefit from personalised, datadriven suggestions tailored to their unique tastes and lifestyles.

Yet, Belinda’s vision extends far beyond mere algorithmic recommendations. She is captivated by the frontier of 3D-printed clothing, where imagination transcends the constraints of traditional manufacturing. “Imagine a world where garments are not merely created but crafted, she says. Where intricate designs previously deemed unattainable come to life seamlessly,”

3D printing heralds a new era of customisation and sustainability for the consumer. Where garments are meticulously tailored to fit individual bodies with unparalleled precision, minimising waste and environmental impact in the process. It’s an interesting concept.

30
31
“The coolest thing I can imagine is 3D printing your own clothes at home. You wake up in the morning, and you go, “Right, okay, I actually fancy this. And you literally print it yourself. That would be awesome!”

With all of this in mind, you would think that our conversation had little left, but we soon realised that we hadn’t even begun to

scratch the surface of Belinda’s true passion. Ultra-Marathon running. More than just a hobby or a way to de-stress, this is something that has defined, perhaps even consumed her for the past six years. From gruelling 24-hour runs around tracks to conquering 100 kilometres of rugged terrain, she’s truly pushed the limits of human endurance. Even during lockdown, Belinda took on virtual ultra-marathons and challenged herself with treadmill marathons, embodying the relentless spirit of a true athlete.

However, this intense pursuit of running came with its consequences. Belinda candidly shared the moment she reached a breaking point, quite literally, when her body rebelled against the punishing regimen. “When you run, you get injured,” she explained. Despite learning to push through pain, a fateful incident in the gym led to a

32

broken back, forcing her to confront the harsh reality of her physical limitations.

Now fully healed and back to exercising, Belinda admits to grappling with the void left by her beloved ultra marathon runs. Running had been her sanctuary, her solace amidst the chaos of life. “That was my thinking time. That was the way that I calmed down after a stressful day. That was my time,” she reminisced. The transition away from her habitual stress-relief routine proved to be a daunting challenge.

Over the past 18 months, Belinda has embarked on a journey of self-discovery, learning to relax and de-stress without relying on her once-beloved runs. “I’ve had to relearn how to enjoy things without saying, ‘Let me just go for a quick three-mile run first to calm me down,’” she confessed. It’s been a transformative experience, one

that has taught her resilience and forced her to confront long-held beliefs about the limits of her body.

And people say, “Oh, try swimming.” Or “Go on the bike.” It just is not the same.

And it’s been really challenging. But I am out the other side now and I can now exercise again, which is good, and that’s the way that I unwind. I just can’t do ridiculous ultra marathons.

So, all those people who said to me, “Oh, it’s bad for you. Running’s bad for you,” I ignored them; unfortunately, they were all right, which is really irritating.”

SUSAN WALSH, DIRTY DATA

WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE TO BE A WOMAN IN BUSINESS, DATA AND PROCUREMENT. Ironically, it doesn’t take a data expert to tell you that women are seriously underrepresented in data and procurement. Looking around a room at a data convention tends to be enough! However, sources show that only 15%-22% of data scientists are women, while in procurement, just 38% of procurement professionals are women –a figure that decreases with seniority.

So it’s not surprising that I’m often asked what it’s like to be a woman in business, data and procurement. And the truth? I freakin’ love it!

I get to stand out in a crowd of men in suits, wearing colourful clothing and earrings and make myself as memorable as possible for everyone. They don’t always remember me as The Classification Guru; sometimes it’s “you’re the data lady”, “you’re the guru”, or “you sing on LinkedIn”( more on that later…),

36

but they recognise me. But it’s also challenging. For much of my life, I’ve looked younger than I am, I haven’t been taken seriously, I’ve had comments about what I’m wearing, and I have been patronised at every turn. I can count on no hands the number of times a woman has told me how to run my business but I would need more than two hands for my male counterparts. Have I listened? What do you think? I’m pretty stubborn, and I thank my family for that. They taught me not to take crap from anyone, to believe in myself, to stand up for myself and be the best I could be. I am truly thankful for that.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…

In my first business - a clothes shop that failedI remember visiting the local council offices to ask for help with my business rates or negotiate payment. They told me, “No. What do you think you were doing opening a business in these times? Woolworths only went bust a couple of years ago.” I was treated like a child at school being told off. I had built a business plan and run it by an accountant before opening, but this was not enough for them.

There are two points to mention from this scenario. Firstly, I don’t think they would have spoken to a man like that, and secondly, if everyone thought like the council, no one would ever open a business! But this is me, so what did I do? I went down fighting. I put signs up in my shop window saying I was closing down due to business rates and got featured in the local paper and radio. It didn’t save the business, but boy, it felt good!and it’s something I continue to endure. I can tell you stories where I’ve sat on multiple different calls and been talked “at” for an hour, I’ve had people force their products on me, tell me what I should be

doing in my business, how to market it, and even pivot to something completely different.

I’ve been publicly “mansplained” to on posts when I’ve shared business struggles, even when I specifically said I didn’t want advice, and I was sharing my experience.

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

I’d love to tell you that this attitude died. I’ve had men passive-aggressively post comments in various places that individually would not mean much but, when combined, show a clear picture that something else is going on. Has it stopped me? Has it heck?

I’ve exhibited at events where I’ve been the only female business owner and have had men approach the stand to ask, “Is this your business?”. When I responded yes, they replied, “Good for you!”. This happened TWICE on the same day. I thanked them politely, and in the years to come, I got bolder and braver.

I now exhibit at these events with a pink tinsel background; I’ve had other male exhibitors comment, “Are we at a disco?” and smirk, but let me tell you this: at the end of the day when attendees have gone home, which booth will they remember? The boring corporate one, or the pink sparkly one?

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A WOMAN IN DATA AND PROCUREMEN T

Overall, I’d say my biggest challenge has been to be considered an equal. I don’t want to be labelled or get special treatment.

I’m Susan, and I’m a person - a person in procurement, a person in data and a person in business. I’m a business owner, published author, global speaker and award winner. I’m more than a woman in anything; I am equal to all my peers. And it’s so important to have that mindset because if you believe you are not equal to any of your peers, you will unconsciously let yourself (and them) make you feel that way, impacting how you present yourself.

37

Of course, this is so much easier than it sounds. We all know women have lower selfesteem and struggle more with imposter syndrome. My confidence is not something I’ve always had, and it didn’t come easily. I’ve worked on it and been supported by a coach, but now, I feel like there’s no stopping me.

SO, HOW DID I ACHIEVE THIS?

1. I focused on what I was good at and got better. This helped my confidence in talking about my area of expertise.

2. I got a coach. She helped me change my thinking, language and behaviour.

3. Because of the above things, I gained a lot more self-belief.

4. I was brave. I said yes to pretty much every opportunity, even if I didn’t think I could do it.

5. I’ve been consistent. I show up every day, even when I don’t want to and make myself visible.

6. I’m stubborn. I don’t take no for an answer - there’s always a different way (I’ve even done a TEDx on this – Say NO to NO).

7. I’ve been authentically me. I haven’t tried to “fit in with the guys” (or the women, for that matter); I’ve been uniquely me. That includes lipsyncing on Sundays on LinkedIn, which, surprisingly people love, and I’ve been open and brutally honest with everyone about the challenges of running a business.

8. I’ve networked a lot. And in multiple countries. I always believed I could have a global business.

9. I’ve supported other people, particularly women, coming up, offering my help and advice where needed without expecting anything in return.

Can you do this too? Of course you can! The things I’ve done won’t be right for everyone - you have to be comfortable while pushing yourself outside your normal limits and finding what’s right for you.

WOULD I CHANGE ANY OF IT? NOT A CHANCE.

Netta’s approach to innovation was not haphazard; it was strategic and purposeful. Pioneering Leadership

In the world of journalism, Katharine Graham shattered glass ceilings and redefined what it meant to lead. As the first female CEO of The Washington Post, Katharine’s journey from a reluctant leader to a trailblazing icon is a testament to her resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity.

Born in 1917 into a world where women’s roles were often confined to the domestic sphere, Katharine’s early life was shaped by privilege and tradition. As the daughter of Eugene Meyer, the owner of The Washington Post, she grew up in a world of wealth and influence but faced societal expectations that underestimated her potential. Despite this, Katharine possessed a fierce determination to prove herself and make

her mark in the male-dominated world of journalism.

Katharine’s journey into leadership was not without its challenges. When her husband, Philip Graham, took over as publisher of The Washington Post in 1946, she reluctantly stepped into the role of a supportive spouse, grappling with doubts about her own abilities. However, tragedy struck in 1963 when Philip died by suicide, leaving Katharine as the unexpected heir to the newspaper empire he had built. Suddenly thrust into the spotlight, Katharine faced immense pressure to prove herself worthy of leading one of the nation’s most influential newspapers.

Under her leadership, The Washington Post evolved from a local paper into a national powerhouse, known for its fearless reporting and commitment to journalistic excellence.

One of Katharine’s most defining moments came during the Watergate scandal, when The Washington Post’s investigative reporting helped uncover the truth behind the Nixon administration’s corruption and cover-up. Despite facing intense pressure and threats from powerful political forces, Katharine stood firm in her commitment to truth and transparency, earning the admiration and respect of journalists around the world. Her unwavering courage and integrity cemented her legacy as one of the most influential figures in modern journalism.

Beyond her professional achievements, Katharine’s leadership style was

characterised by empathy, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility to her employees and readers. She was known for fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity at The Washington Post, empowering her staff to push boundaries and pursue excellence in their reporting. DEBBIE LOKE NAVIGATING THE DIGITAL FRONTIERS OF HEALTHCARE

DEBBIE LOKE, CIO/DIRECTOR OF DIGITAL AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF DERBY AND BURTON NHS FOUNDATION TRUST, DISCUSSES THE EVOLUTION OF TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE, OVERCOMING CHALLENGES, AND FOSTERING DIGITAL INNOVATION.

50

In the vast expanse of healthcare, where the convergence of humanity and technology defines the landscape, Debbie Loke stands as a beacon of digital transformation. As the Chief Information Officer and Director of Digital at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, her journey epitomises the evolution of technology’s role in revolutionising patient care and operational efficiency within the National Health Service (NHS).

With a career trajectory transcending traditional boundaries, Loke’s professional odyssey began in finance, traversing through the corridors of consultancy before embracing Information Technology (IT) with fervour. Reflecting on her early days, she reminisces, “I commenced my career in finance, a realm far removed from the pulsating heart of healthcare. Yet, it was an unexpected detour into supporting

educators in Nottingham’s inner-city schools during the early 1990s that laid the foundation for my journey into the digital realm.”

The resonance of this experience left an indelible mark on Loke, igniting her passion for leveraging technology to empower communities. “Witnessing the transformative potential of technology in equipping educators with the tools to inspire and educate captivated me,” she recalls. “It was a watershed moment that propelled me towards embracing IT as not just a profession, but a calling.”

EMBRACING THE CHALLENGES OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION:

The transition from finance to the nexus of IT and healthcare marked a pivotal juncture in

Loke’s career trajectory. “Stepping into the realm of healthcare, I was propelled by a singular desire—to effectuate tangible change, to make a difference,” she asserts. “My move into the NHS in 2003 was driven by an innate desire to leverage technology as a catalyst for revolutionising patient care.”

However, the path towards digital transformation is fraught with challenges, particularly in an industry as complex and nuanced as healthcare. Formidable hurdles have punctuated Loke’s journey, chief among them being the transition from archaic paper-based systems to sophisticated electronic solutions.

“Moving from antiquated paper-based systems to digital platforms is akin to traversing a labyrinthine maze,”

she reflects. “The allure of electronic systems is undeniable, promising enhanced efficiency, streamlined workflows, and improved patient outcomes. Yet, the journey towards digitalisation is fraught with pitfalls, from data migration challenges to resistance to change among stakeholders.”

Loke’s tenure at the helm of digital transformation within the NHS has been characterised by a steadfast commitment to surmounting these challenges. “You can’t force people to embrace change; you can only inspire and empower them,” she asserts. “By fostering digital confidence among staff, elucidating the tangible benefits of electronic systems, and nurturing a culture of continuous learning, we can navigate the tumultuous waters of digital transformation.”

HARNESSING THE POWER OF DATA:

At the heart of Loke’s vision for digital transformation lies the transformative potential of data. “Data is the lifeblood of healthcare, the currency that underpins clinical decision-making and operational efficacy,” she asserts. “The advent of sophisticated data analytics tools has heralded a new era in healthcare, empowering clinicians with actionable insights and enabling healthcare organisations to drive informed, data-driven decisions.”

Reflecting on her experiences in pioneering data-driven initiatives, Loke recalls a seminal moment in her career—the development of data warehouses in Nairobi. “Empowering organisations with real-time access to data was a game-changer, enabling them to reach more customers and enhance their service offerings,” she reminisces. “It underscored the transformative power of data in driving operational excellence and improving patient outcomes.”

NAVIGATING THE COMPLEXITIES OF DIGITAL GOVERNANCE:

As the Responsible Officer for managing Information Management and Technology (IM&T) services, Loke shoulders the weighty mantle of ensuring seamless alignment between digital technology and clinical services within the NHS. “Clinical safety is paramount in all our digital endeavours,” she emphasises. “Collaborating closely with clinical teams, we strive to develop robust digital solutions prioritising patient safety and efficacy.”

Yet, navigating the intricate web of digital governance within the NHS is a Herculean task, fraught with complexities and regulatory nuances. “Ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks, safeguarding patient data, and mitigating cybersecurity risks are paramount considerations in digital governance,” Loke explains. “By fostering a culture of collaboration and transparency, we can navigate the labyrinthine landscape

55

of digital governance with confidence and integrity.”

EMBRACING A PAPERLESS FUTURE:

Looking towards the horizon, Loke envisions a future where seamless digital solutions replace the archaic shackles of paper-based systems. “The transition towards a paperless future holds immense promise, from reducing administrative burdens to enhancing interoperability and accessibility,” she asserts. “Initiatives such as scanning case notes into electronic formats and integrating data across care settings are pivotal steps towards realising this vision.”

Loke emphasises the importance of strategic partnerships and collaborative alliances in navigating the uncharted terrain of digital transformation at the NHS. “Our relationships with suppliers and delivery partners are instrumental in driving transformative change,” she explains. “By fostering a culture of collaboration and co-creation, we can harness the collective wisdom and expertise of industry partners to propel us towards our shared vision of a digitally-enabled future.”

Amidst the seismic shifts and tumultuous upheavals of the COVID-19 pandemic, Loke and her team rose to the occasion, leveraging technology to mitigate the impact and enhance patient care. “From deploying

56

virtual appointments to facilitating selfbooking of tests and vaccines, digital innovation played a pivotal role in our response to the pandemic,” she reflects. “It underscored the resilience and adaptability of our healthcare system in the face of unprecedented challenges.”

EMPOWERING WOMEN IN DIGITAL LEADERSHIP:

In the often male-dominated world of technology, Debbie Loke’s ascent to a leadership position is a testament to her prowess and a beacon of hope for aspiring women in the field. With a keen awareness of the challenges and opportunities inherent in her role, Loke champions the cause of

gender parity in leadership with unwavering determination.

“Gender parity in leadership remains a formidable challenge,” Loke acknowledges, “but it is also an unparalleled opportunity for transformative change.” With a firm belief in the power of diversity and inclusion, she asserts that by harnessing the collective wisdom and diverse perspectives of women leaders, the industry can usher in a new era of innovation and inclusivity. Loke’s vision extends beyond mere representation; it encompasses the fundamental belief that diverse leadership teams are more equitable and effective in driving innovation and fostering positive organisational cultures.

Reflecting on her own journey as a trailblazer in digital leadership, Loke underscores the pivotal role of mentorship and advocacy in empowering women leaders. “I have been fortunate to have male allies who have championed my professional growth and provided invaluable guidance,” she acknowledges. However, she emphasises that the responsibility for fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment within digital leadership extends to all individuals, regardless of gender. Loke believes in the power of solidarity and collaboration, stressing that we can break down barriers and create a more equitable and inclusive environment for all by working together.

Through her actions and advocacy, Loke exemplifies the notion that true progress is not achieved in isolation but through collective effort and collaboration. She is a guiding light for aspiring women leaders, demonstrating that perseverance, resilience, and a commitment to excellence can shatter even the most formidable glass ceilings.

As she continues to navigate the complex terrain of digital leadership, Loke remains steadfast in her commitment to championing gender parity and empowering women

in technology. Her unwavering determination and visionary leadership inspire all, reminding us that the path to progress is paved with inclusivity, diversity, and unwavering determination.

IN CONCLUSION:

As Debbie Loke continues to navigate the digital frontiers of healthcare, her unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence serves as a beacon of inspiration for the healthcare industry. Through her visionary leadership and steadfast determination, she epitomises the transformative potential of technology in revolutionising patient care and operational efficiency within the NHS. As the digital landscape continues to evolve rapidly, one thing remains abundantly clear— Debbie Loke’s indomitable spirit and determination to leverage technology for the betterment of humanity will continue to shape the future of healthcare for generations to come.

Building the pipeline of future female leaders in STEM.

Saloni Kataria is a Technology transformation leader specialising in Cloud, Cyber Security and Risk Portfolio management in Financial Services. She has launched Cloud services globally in regulated environments with complex customer requirements and delivered Cyber Security & Risk Portfolios at an Enterprise scale.

Gender stereotypes can start as young as age 5-7 where girls may show an interest in careers traditionally associated with women, such as teaching or nursing, while showing less interest in STEM-related careers or male-dominated fields like engineering. With women making up just 24% of the workforce working in STEM today; the need for building the pipeline of future female leaders is crucial to ensure there is a more diverse and innovative workforce for the future.

What is mentoring and why does matter?

“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself” Oprah Winfrey Several factors influence the need for mentors for girls considering STEM careers:

Confidence: Girls often face societal stereotypes and biases that discourage them from pursuing STEM interests. Mentors can provide guidance and a supportive environment where girls are empowered to explore their interests and develop confidence in their abilities.

Representation : Historically, STEM fields have been male-dominated. When girls see women succeeding and thriving in STEM careers, it inspires them to pursue those paths themselves. Mentors serve as visible role models, showing girls that they belong and can excel in STEM.

Skills: Mentoring provides opportunities for girls to develop essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity, which are highly valued in STEM fields. Mentors can offer real world experiences and feedback to help girls build these skills and navigate the challenges they may encounter.

Networking and Opportunities: Mentors can connect girls with valuable networking opportunities, internships that can further

62

their STEM education and career aspirations. Building a strong support network early on can open doors to future opportunities and collaborations.

Diversity and Innovation:

By encouraging more girls to pursue STEM careers, diverse perspectives and ideas are present leading to more creative solutions to complex problems. Mentoring girls considering a career in STEM is essential for breaking down barriers, building confidence, and creating a more diverse and inclusive community that can address the future challenges for society.

MY MENTORING EXPERIENCE WITH STEMETTES

After an 18 year career in Technology and seeing the positive impact mentoring had on my career more recently, I wanted to share my experiences to encourage girls who were considering a career in STEM. I discovered Stemettes who provided the perfect opportunity for experienced professionals to mentor young girls aged 15-25. I signed up and after clearing security checks I was invited to a speed mentoring match event. I was paired with Nahian and we hit it off instantly with a great conversation about her interests and my background in Technology in financial services. After a few meetings it was clear that Nahian was ambitious, intelligent and full of potential, we discussed her aspirations to become an engineer and how her GCSE’s would support that. I shared my experience of being an Asian woman in technology, and what it meant to be in the minority. We discussed several topics from revision techniques for her GCSE’s to effective communication and how she could tailor her communication style for different audiences at school and in her extra-curricular activities. We are only half-way through our mentoring journey and I’m really excited and encouraged by the progress we have already made.

The Mentee, Nahian

I am currently studying for my GCSE’s, I enjoy maths and sciences as they use more of your logical and rational knowledge and are not subjective so there is an absolute answer. I plan to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry in sixth form as these subjects are interwoven into our daily lives from light bulbs to cars it’s important for me to understand these concepts to advance.

Stemettes and the student to Stemettes programme has provided me with an amazing opportunity to broaden my knowledge about a career in STEM.

I have learned valuable transferable skills and been exposed to numerous external opportunities by my mentor, Saloni. This has allowed me to understand more about the world of data and technology.

Saloni has provided me with advice and guidance on my ambitions in the field of technology and engineering and supported me with tips for studying for my exams. She has become a role model in the short time we have known each other, her career journey is inspiring as she has excelled in several roles.

The support from Stemettes and my mentor has been fantastic, it has helped me to shape my future career options and how I can navigate future workforce challenges as a young woman in STEM.

Her latest book 'The Power of Women: Stop Blocking and Start Empowering Women' starts with a quandary. Despite countless diversity initiatives, gender inequality for women in the workplace continues. The Power of Women reveals why and is a call to action. Drawing on interviews with 70 executives, a survey of 2,000 employees, and desk-research, in her latest book, Dr Khan unearths the pernicious impact of gender stereotypes, sexual objectification, and the web of double standards that plague the corporate realm. Yet, her insights resonate beyond finger-pointing and victimhood. With a compelling call for introspection, she exposes an uncomfortable truth: the internalisation of gender oppression by women themselves. With a compelling narrative and insightful analysis, Khan navigates the complex paradox of women inadvertently hindering their own advancement by perpetuating harmful behaviours against each other. Her analysis reveals that true empowerment requires acknowledging personal agency while dismantling systemic

barriers. Each Chapter ends with exercises and recommendations for individuals and organisations to foster environments where potential knows no gender bounds.
