Norman Wells student shares tips for navigating university in southern cities

Danielle Pike has big plans for her life after university, butadmitsleavingherhometownofNorman Wellstopursuehereducationwaschallengingatfirst.

“It was extremely difficult, my first year at university,” the 23-year-old said. “I didn’t do well at all that first year, academically and mentally, just leaving from such a small community.”

Pike started her post-secondary education at the University of Alberta (U of A) in Edmonton — a city of over million people, and a big change from the town of about 700 that she grew up in. She immediately struggled to navigate her new environment, finding it difficult to do important tasks like buying groceries, and as her stress mounted, her grades began to slip.

Continued on page 5

Eventually, hergradepointaveragegotlowenough that she was forced to withdraw from her program. For some students, that might have been the end of theroad, butPikedidn’tgiveup.Shesoonreturnedto herstudiesthroughUofA’stransitionyearprogram, whichisdesigned“forIndigenousstudentswhomay notbepreparedtoenterafacultythroughtheregular admissionsroute,”accordingtotheschool’swebsite. CompletingthatprogramsetPikeuptocontinuepursuing a degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver.

“[The transition year program] really did help me to find the resources I needed to support my learningwithtutorsandwritingmentors,”shesaid.“That program did set me up for success for UBC.”

Pike is pursuing a bachelor of education at UBC, with the aim of teaching Indigenous students. When she’s obtained her degree, she hopes to return to the Northtoteachforawhile, andbeyondthat, sheaims to become a university professor. It’s a goal she set for herself when, during an Indigenous knowledge class, she noticed her professor using “the wrong language” while teaching.

Pike is also interested in teaching art classes in a university setting. She is a budding painter, and the hobbyhasbeenasourceofcomfortasshehasadjusted to yet another big city — Vancouver — even larger than Edmonton.

“I really, really have a strong passion for art,” she said. “I do a lot of painting and drawing.”

WhilethingshavebeengoingbetterforPikeinVancouver,therehaveindeedbeenchallengesinthecity.

“I do find it even more difficult by being farther away from home and seeing even less of friends and family,” she admitted. “That’s really been the challenging part about living in Vancouver, that I don’t know much people.”

Despite her continued struggles, Pike still encour-

ages other young people from the NWT to consider pursuingpost-secondarystudies.Itwon’tbeeasyfor most people, she acknowledged, but it’s “definitely, definitely, worth it.”

“I’ve learned a lot these past few years, since I starteduniversity,”shesaid.“Itwasdifficult—very difficult—topushthroughalotofthesechallenges, but I slowly overcame them.”

Pike has plenty of advice to share after her first fewyearsasapost-secondarystudent.Onethingshe encourages students to keep in mind is that moving south to study is indeed a lot to contend with — something she feels her high school teachers could have done a better job impressing on her.

“I do wish maybe during my grade years that it was a bit more transparent about how difficult it was going to be,” she said. “Maybe I would have came in with a better mindset. I just never really thought of all these little things that made such a big difference for university and moving out of my community for the first time.”

She advises others to do as much research and planning as possible to prepare themselves for the trialsofmovingsouthforschool, particularlyifthey have specific individual needs.

“Definitelythinkabouteverylittlething,”shesaid. “I came in with no plan really.

“Idostrugglewithalearningdisability, andIdidn’t thinkabouttheaccommodationsuniversitiesofferfor that.Evensomethingassmallasaddingmoretimeto exams, itdoesmakeadifference.Researchingtutors andresourcestoo, andthere’salotofstudentclubs. There’s a lot of resources for Indigenous students at U of A and UBC. U of A has the First Peoples’ House, where they really did help me when I was completelylostatuniversity.Ididn’tknowanything and they really helped me. They suggested I do the transition year program, and that really did change everything.”

Rankin Inlet student in second year of four-year music program

Kayden Mercer, of Rankin Inlet, is studying for his bachelor of performing arts (music) at Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S.

He is currently in the second year of the four-year program.

Mercer, 19, said he’s loving his studies. Music has always been a really big passion for him, he said.

“It’sreallyanhonourtogettostudymusic, especially at a school like Dalhousie,” said Mercer. “I’m really honoured, to be honest, to really get the opportunity that most people don’t get up from where I’m from.

“I get get asked about Nunavut and Rankin Inlet a lot. It’sreallyrefreshingtoletpeopleknowwhereI’m from. It’s always pretty cool seeing their faces when I tell them where I’m from. There’s always people here interested in learning about where I’m from.”

Mercer laughed when he said he doesn’t get asked too often if he still lives in an iglu in Rankin Inlet.

He said most of what he’s asked about comes out of curiosity, but the odd funny query does float his way every now and then.

“I play along sometimes when I get a funny question. People don’t know, and they sometimes take some pretty wild guesses.

“IrememberwhenIwasyoung,Ihadafriendwhose grandparentswerefromNovaScotiaandIdidn’tthink I’d ever be there in my life.

“Now I’m here, which is funny. It’s funny how the world works.”

Once he finishes his studies at Dalhousie, Mercer

said he really wants to go back home to Rankin Inlet and teach.

He said he feels like there’s a lot of people in the North who really love music and have a passion for playing it.

“Somedon’treallyhavetheoutletandtheopportunities that I had. So, I really want to go back up and give back to my community. Rankin has been really givingtomeformywholelifeandIjustwanttogive the same opportunities that I had to others.

“But, for sure, that might all change if I write a hit record,” said Mercer with hearty laugh.

“I’mhopingtojointheeducationalstream, forsure, but I also like to do personal lessons, as well.

“There’s a lot of things I love that are part of the music program here that I’d love to take up North, so, yeah, personal lessons is one of them for sure.”

Mercer plays a little keyboard and also sings a bit, butheconsidershimselfaguitaristfirstandforemost.

He said things seemed to have happened so fast over the years to land him at Dalhousie University.

“I remember when I was a kid just thinking that going to university would be amazing and here I am getting that opportunity. I think the most important thing is just sticking with it.

“Home is always going to be home. I was always told that. The first year away at university is really tough and you’re going to have a lot of times when you’re going to really wonder if this is for you.

“It’sworthitand, onceyougetintothesecondyear, you realize it really is all about all the hard work you put in. Just sticking with it and believing in yourself is really important.”
